So if you look in the dictionaries

one very natural definition of religion

So if this guy is a rabbi, and a Jewish rabbi,

I think the answer is, European travelers,

they are going to appeal to the very same entities,

הם יפנו לאותן ישויות,

the very same language,

באותה שפה בדיוק,

talk to the very same gods about that.

לדבר לאותם אלים על זה.

This great separation, in other words,

ההפרדה הגדולה הזו, במילים אחרות, בין דת ומדע לא התרחשה.

between religion and science hasn't happened.

Now, this would be a mere historical curiosity,

זה אולי ייראה כמוזרות היסטורית

except that in large parts of the world,

אבל בחלקים גדולים בעולם,

this is still the truth.

זו עדיין האמת.

I had the privilege of going to a wedding

היתה לי הזכות ללכת יום אחד לחתונה בצפון נמיביה,

the other day in northern Namibia,

20 miles or so south of the Angolan border

כ-30 קילומטר דרומית לגבול אנגולה בכפר של 200 אנשים.

in a village of 200 people.

These were modern people.

אלה היו אנשים מודרניים.

We had with us Oona Chaplin,

who some of you may have heard of,

and one of the people from this village came up to her,

and said, "I've seen you in 'Game of Thrones.'"

So these were not people who were isolated from our world,

but nevertheless, for them,

אבל עם זאת, בשבילם,

the gods and the spirits are still very much there,

and when we were on the bus going back and forth

וכשהיינו על האוטובוס שעבר בין אזורי הטקס השונים,

to the various parts of the [ceremony],

they prayed not just in a generic way

הם התפללו לא רק באופן כללי

but for the safety of the journey,

אלא ביקשו בטיחות במסע והם התכוונו לזה,

and they meant it,

and when they said to me that my mother,

וכשהם אמרו לי שאימי,

the bridegroom's [grandmother],

הסבתא של החתן,

was with us, they didn't mean it figuratively.

איתנו, הם לא התכוונו באופן פיסי.

They meant, even though she was a dead person,

הם התכוונו, אפילו שהיא מתה,

they meant that she was still around.

הם התכוונו שהיא עדיין בסביבה.

So in large parts of the world today,

אז בחלקים גדולים של העולם היום,

that separation between science and religion

ההפרדה בין מדע לדת לא התרחשה בחלקים גדולים של העולם היום,

hasn't occurred in large parts of the world today,

and as I say, these are not --

וכמו שאמרתי, הם לא --

This guy used to work for Chase and at the World Bank.

These are fellow citizens of the world with you,

אלה אזרחי העולם כמוכם,

but they come from a place in which religion

אבל הם באים ממקום שבו הדת ממלאת תפקיד שונה לגמרי.

is occupying a very different role.

So what I want you to think about next time somebody wants

אז אני רוצה שבפעם הבאה שמישהו ירצה להשמיע הכללות על הדת

to make some vast generalization about religion

is that maybe there isn't such a thing

שתחשבו על כך שאולי אין כזה דבר, "דת", בתור "דבר",

as a religion, such a thing as religion,

and that therefore what they say

ולכן מה שהוא אומר לא יכול להיות נכון.

cannot possibly be true.
