Haas&Hahn: How painting can transform communities

Dre Urhahn: This theater is built on Copacabana,

which is the most famous beach in the world,

lies a community called Vila Cruzeiro,

and roughly 60,000 people live there.

Now, the people here in Rio mostly know

Vila Cruzeiro from the news,

and unfortunately, news from Vila Cruzeiro often

is not good news.

But Vila Cruzeiro is also the place

where our story begins.

Jeroen Koolhaas: Ten years ago, we first came to Rio

جرویین کول هاس: ده سال پیش، اولین بار به ریو اومدیم

to shoot a documentary about life in the favelas.

تا یه فیلم مستند درباره زندگی در مناطق حومه ای بسازیم.

Now, we learned that favelas are informal communities.

حالا فهمیدیم که مناطق حومه ای جوامع غیررسمی هستن.

They emerged over the years

اونا طی سالها بوجود اومدن

when immigrants from the countryside

وقتی مهاجرین از مناطق روستایی

came to the cities looking for work,

بدنبال کار به شهرها اومدن،

like cities within the cities,

مثل یه شهر داخل یه شهر دیگه،

known for problems like crime, poverty,

که به مشکلاتی مثل جنایت، فقر،

and the violent drug war between

و خشونت و نزاع معروفه بین

police and the drug gangs.

پلیس و گروههای مواد مخدر.

So what struck us was that

خوب چیزی که برامون غیرمنتظره بود این بود که

these were communities that the people

اینها جوامعی بودن که مردم

who lived there had built with their own hands,

ساکن اونجا با دستهای خودشون ساخته بودن،

without a master plan

بدون اینکه یه طرح اولیه داشته باشن

and like a giant work in progress.

و مثل یه غول جلو میرن.

Where we're from, in Holland,

جایی که ما ازش اومدیم، در هلند،

everything is planned.

همه چیز برنامه داره.

We even have rules for how to follow the rules.

حتی برای نحوه پیروی از اصول هم اصولی داریم.

DU: So the last day of filming, we ended up

هان: خوب، آخرین روز فیلمبرداری،

in Vila Cruzeiro, and we were sitting down

در ویلا کروزیرو نشسته بودیم

and we had a drink,

و نوشیدنی میخوردیم،

and we were overlooking this hill

و به این تپه نگاه میکردیم

with all these houses,

با همه این خونه ها،

and most of these houses looked unfinished,

و بیشتر این خونه ها نیمه کاره به نظر میرسیدن،

and they had walls of bare brick,

و دیوارهاشون آجر خالی بود،

but we saw some of these houses

ولی میدیدیم بعضی از این خونه ها

which were plastered and painted,

and suddenly we had this idea:

و یهو این ایده به ذهنمون رسید:

what would it look like if all these houses

چی میشد اگه همه این خونه ها

would be plastered and painted?

گچکاری و نقاشی میشدن؟

And then we imagined one big design,

و بعد یه طرح بزرگ به ذهنمون رسید،

one big work of art.

یه کار بزرگ هنری.

Who would expect something like that

کی میتونست یه همچین چیزی تصور کنه

in a place like this?

تو یه همچین جایی؟

So we thought, would that even be possible?

پس فکر کردیم، این آیا اصلاً ممکنه؟

So first we started to count the houses,

خوب اول شروع کردیم به شمارش خونه ها،

but we soon lost count.

ولی زود شمارش از دستمون خارج شد.

But somehow the idea stuck.

ولی تقریباً یه حدودی دستمون اومد.

JK: We had a friend.

هاس: یه دوست داشتیم.

He ran an NGO in Vila Cruzeiro.

صاحب یه ان جی اُ در ویلا کروزیرو بود.

His name was Nanko,

اسمش نانکو بود،

and he also liked the idea.

و او هم از این ایده خوشش اومد.

He said, "You know, everybody here

او گفت، "میدونین، همه در اینجا

would pretty much love to have their houses

خیلی دوس دارن خونه هاشون

plastered and painted.

گچ کاری و نقاشی بشه.

It's when a house is finished."

اون موقعیه که خونه تموم شده باشه."

So he introduced us to the right people,

پس ما رو به افراد مناسبی معرفی کرد،

and Vitor and Maurinho became our crew.

و ویتور و مورینیو جزو افراد ما شدن.

We picked three houses in the center of the community

سه تا خونه وسط محله انتخاب

and we start here. We made a few designs,

و اینجا شروع کردیم. چند تا طرح زدیم،

and everybody liked this design

و همه این طرح

of a boy flying a kite the best.

یه پسر و بادبادک رو بیشتر دوست داشتن.

So we started painting, and the first thing we did

was to paint everything blue,

این بود که همه چیزو آبی رنگ کنیم،

and we thought that looked already pretty good.

و فکر کردیم همین خودش قشنگه.

But they hated it. The people who lived there really hated it.

ولی اونا ازش بدشون میومد. مردم ساکن اونجا واقعاً ازش بدشون میومد.

They said, "What did you do?

میگفتن، "چیکار کردین؟

You painted our house in exactly the same color

خونه های ما رو دقیقاً به رنگ

as the police station."

پاسگاه پلیس نقاشی کردین."

(Laughter)

In a favela, that is not a good thing.

در یه محله حومه شهر، این چیز خوبی نیست.

Also the same color as the prison cell.

این شبیه رنگ سلول زندان هم هست.

So we quickly went ahead and we painted the boy,

پس سریعاً دست بکار شدیم و پسرک رو نقاشی کردیم،

and then we thought we were finished,

و بعد فکر کردیم کار تموم شده،

we were really happy, but still,

خیلی خوشحال بودیم، ولی هنوز،

it wasn't good because the little kids started coming up to us,

and they said, "You know, there's a boy flying the kite,

و می گفتن، "نگاه کنین، یه پسر داره بادبادک بازی می کنه،

but where is his kite?"

ولی بادبادکش کجاست؟"

We said, "Uh, it's art.

گفتیم، "اوه، این یه کار هنریه.

You know, you have to imagine the kite."

میدونین، ناچارین بادبادک رو تجسم کنین."

(Laughter)

(خنده)

And they said, "No, no, no, we want to see the kite."

و اونا گفتن، "نه، نه، نه، ما میخوایم بادبادک رو ببینیم."

So we quickly installed a kite

پس سریعاً یه بادبادک درست کردیم

way up high on the hill,

اون بالا روی تپه،

so that you could see the boy flying the kite

تا بتونین پسرک رو موقع بادبادک بازی ببینین

and you could actually see a kite.

و یه بادبادک واقعی هم ببینین.

So the local news started writing about it,

خوب، اخبار محلی شروع کردن به نوشتن درباره اون،

which was great,

که عالی بود،

and then even The Guardian wrote about it:

و بعد حتی گاردین درباره ش نوشت:

"Notorious slum becomes open-air gallery."

"محله بدنام حومه شهر به گالری فضای باز تبدیل شد."

JK: So, encouraged by this success,

هاس: خوب، ما که با این موفقیت تشویق شده بودیم،

we went back to Rio for a second project,

به ریو برگشتیم برای پروژه دوم،

and we stumbled upon this street.

و به این خیابون برخوردیم.

It was covered in concrete to prevent mudslides,

and somehow we saw a sort of river in it,

and we imagined this river to be a river in Japanese style

with koi carp swimming upstream.

So we decided to paint that river,

and we invited Rob Admiraal,

و از راب آدمیرال دعوت کردیم،

who is a tattoo artist,

and he specialized in the Japanese style.

و تخصصش تو طرح ژاپنیه.

So little did we know that we would spend

خوب نمیدونستیم قراره

almost an entire year painting that river,

نقاشی رودخونه یه سال تموم طول بکشه،

together with Geovani and Robinho and Vitor,

همرا با جیووانی، روبینیو و ویتور،

who lived nearby.

که همون نزدیکی زندگی میکردن.

And we even moved into the neighborhood

و حتی خونه مونو آوردیم به همسایگی

when one of the guys that lived on the street, Elias,

وقتی یکی از پسرا به اسم الیاس که همون خیابون زندگی میکرد،

told us that we could come and live in his house,

به ما گفت میتونیم تو خونه ش زندگی کنیم،

together with his family,

همراه با خونواده ش،

which was fantastic.

که عالی بود.

Unfortunately, during that time,

بدبختانه، همون موقع،

another war broke out between the police

نزاع دیگه ای درگرفت بین پلیس

and the drug gangs.

و گروههای مواد مخدر.

We learned that during those times,

فهمیدیم همون موقع،

people in communities really stick together

اهالی محله واقعاً با هم هستن

during these times of hardship,

در مواقع سختی،

but we also learned a very important element,

ولی به یه نکته خیلی مهم دیگه هم پی بردیم،

the importance of barbecues. (Laughter)

اهمیت کباب خوری با همسایه ها. (خنده)

Because, when you throw a barbecue,

چون، وقتی شما بساط کباب خوری راه میندازین،

it turns you from a guest into a host,

از یه مهمان به یه میزبان تبدیل میشین،

so we decided to throw one

پس تصمیم گرفتیم یکی راه بندازیم

almost every other week,

تقریباً یه هفته در میون،

and we got to know everybody in the neighborhood.

و با همه همسایه ها آشنا شدیم.

JK: We still had this idea of the hill, though.

هاس: البته هنوز این ایده تپه رو داشتیم.

DU: Yeah, yeah, we were talking about

هان: بله، بله، داشتیم درباره

the scale of this, because this painting

مقیاسش صحبت میکردیم، چون این نقاشی

was incredibly big,

خیلی خیلی بزرگ بود،

and it was insanely detailed,

و ریزه کاری زیادی داشت،

and this process almost drove us completely insane ourselves.

و این کار تقریباً خود ما رو کلافه کرده بود.

But we figured that maybe, during this process,

ولی فکر کردیم شاید در حین کار،

all the time that we had spent in the neighborhood

همه زمانی که کنار همسایه ها بودیم،

was maybe actually even more important

than the painting itself.

JK: So after all that time,

this hill, this idea was still there,

and we started to make sketches,

models, and we figured something out.

و ایده کلی به دستمون اومد.

We figured that our ideas, our designs

ایده کلی این بود که طرح ما

had to be a little bit more simple than that last project

باید کمی ساده تر از پروژه قبلی باشه

so that we could paint with more people

تا بتونیم با افراد بیشتری کار کنیم

and cover more houses at the same time.

و خونه های بیشتری رو همزمان پوشش بدیم.

And we had an opportunity to try that out

و فرصت داشتیم امتحانش کنیم

in a community in the central part of Rio,

در محله ای در منطقه مرکزی ریو،

which is called Santa Marta,

به اسم سانتا مارتا،

and we made a design for this place

و طرحی برای اینجا درست کردیم

which looked like this,

که شبیه این بود،

and then we got people to go along with it

و بعد افرادی پیدا کردیم که موافق بودن

because turns out that if your idea is ridiculously big,

چون مشخصه اگه ایده شما خیلی بزرگ باشه،

it's easier to get people to go along with this. (Laughter)

راحت تر اینه که افرادی پیدا کنین که موافقش باشن. (خنده)

And the people of Santa Marta

و اهالی سانتا مارتا

got together and in a little over a month

با هم جمع شدن و در مدت کمی بیشتر از یک ماه

they turned that square into this.

اون میدون رو تبدیل کردن به این.

(Applause)

And this image somehow went all over the world.

و این تصویر تقریباً به همه جای دنیا رفت.

DU: So then we received an unexpected phone call

هان: خوب بعدش یه تماس تلفنی غیرمنتظره داشتیم

from the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program,

از برنامه نقاشی دیواری فیلادلفیا،

and they had this question

و این سؤال رو داشتن

if this idea, our approach,

که آیا این ایده، نحوه اجرای ما،

if this would actually work in North Philly,

در فیلادلفیای شمالی عملی باشه،

which is one of the poorest neighborhoods

که یکی از فقرنشین ترین مناطق حومه ای

in the United States.

در ایالات متحده س.

So we immediately said yes.

پس بلافاصله جواب مثبت دادیم.

We had no idea how,

نمیدونستیم چجوری،

but it seemed like a very interesting challenge,

ولی چالش خیلی جالبی به نظر میرسید،

so we did exactly the same as we did in Rio,

پس دقیقاً همون کاریو کردیم که در ریو انجام دادیم،

and we moved into the neighborhood

و سراغ همسایه ها رفتیم

and started barbecuing.

و کباب خوری راه انداختیم.

(Laughter)

So the project took almost two years to complete,

خوب، تکمیل پروژه حدود دو سال طول کشید،

and we made individual designs

و طرحهای جداگانه ای آماده کردیم

for every single house on the avenue that we painted,

واسه هر خونه تو خیابونی که نقاشی کردیم،

and we made these designs together

و این طرحها رو به کمک

with the local store owners, the building owners,

صاحب مغازه ها، صاحبخونه ها،

and a team of about a dozen young men and women.

و یه تیم از حدود یه دوجین مرد و زن جوان آمده کردیم.

They were hired, and then they were trained as painters,

اونا استخدام شدن، و بعد نقاشی یاد گرفتن،

and together they transformed their own neighborhood,

و همسایگی خودشونو با هم تبدیل کردن،

the whole street, into a giant patchwork of color.

سراسر خیابون رو، به یه چهل تکه رنگارنگ.

And at the end, the city of Philadelphia

و در پایان، شهر فیلادلفیا

thanked every single one of them

از تک تک اونا تشکر کرد

and gave them a merit for their accomplishment.

و به خاطر این موفقیت به اونا چیزی داد که مستحقش بودن.

JK: So now we had painted a whole street.

هاس: خوب حالا یه خیابون رو کاملاً نقاشی کرده بودیم.

How about we do this whole hill now?

حالا چطوره این کارو روی کل تپه انجام بدیم؟

We started looking for funding,

رفتیم دنبال بودجه،

but instead, we just ran into questions,

ولی بجاش، فقط با پرسشهایی روبرو شدیم،

like, how many houses are you going to paint?

مثل چند تا خونه رو قراره نقاشی کنین؟

How many square meters is that?

چند متر مربع میشه؟

How much paint are you going to use,

چقدر رنگ لازم دارین،

and how many people are you going to employ?

و قراره چند نفر استخدام کنین؟

And we did try for years to write plans

و ما سالها تلاش کرده بودیم برای نوشتن طرح

for the funding and answer all those questions,

برای بودجه و پاسخ به همه اون سؤالها،

but then we thought,

ولی بعدش فکر کردیم،

in order to answer all those questions,

برای پاسخ به همه اون پرسشها،

you have to know exactly what you're going to do

باید دقیقاً بدونین قراره چیکار بکنین

before you actually get there and start.

قبل از اینکه برین اونجا و شروع کنین.

And maybe it's a mistake to think like that.

و این طور فکر کردن شاید اشتباه باشه.

It would lose some of the magic that we had learned

این میتونه روش خارق العاده ای رو که یاد گرفته بودیم تقریباً خنثی کنه

about that if you go somewhere

در مورد اون اگه برین به جایی

and you spend time there,

و اونجا وقت بذارین،

you can let the project grow organically

تا پروژه به صورت طبیعی پیش بره

and have a life of its own.

و زندگی خودش رو داشته باشه.

DU: So what we did is

هان: خوب کاری که ما کردیم اینه که

we decided to take this plan and strip it away

تصمیم گرفتیم این طرح رو بگیریم و

from all the numbers

همه اعداد رو ازش جدا کنیم

and all the ideas and presumptions

همه عقاید و ذهنیتها رو کنار بذاریم

and just go back to the base idea,

و فقط برگردیم به ایده اصلی،

which was to transform this hill

که تبدیل این تپه بود

into a giant work of art.

به یه کار هنری غول پیکر.

And instead of looking for funding,

و بجای پیدا کردن بودجه،

we started a crowdfunding campaign,

یه کمپین شروع کردیم واسه جمع آوری پولهای اندک،

and in a little over a month,

و در مدت زمان کمی بیشتر از یک ماه،

more than 1,500 people put together

بیش از ۱٫۵۰۰ نفر گرد هم اومدن

and donated over 100,000 dollars.

و بیش از ۱۰۰٫۰۰۰ دلار اهدا کردن.

So for us, this was an amazing moment, because now —

because now we finally had the freedom

to use all the lessons that we had learned

and create a project that was built

the same way that the favela was built,

from the ground on up, bottom up,

از اول تا آخر، پایین تا بالا،

with no master plan.

بدون هیچ طرح اولیه.

JK: So we went back, and we employed Angelo,

هاس: پس برگشتیم و آنجلو رو استخدام کردیم،

and he's a local artist from Vila Cruzeiro,

و اون یه هنرمند محلیه از ویلا کروزیرو،

very talented guy, and he knows almost everybody there,

یه آدم خیلی با استعداد که تقریباً همه رو اونجا میشناسه،

and then we employed Elias, our former landlord

و بعد الیاس رو استخدام کردیم، صاحبخونه قبلی مون

who invited us into his house,

که ما رو به خونه ش دعوت کرد،

and he's a master of construction.

و اون یه استاد معماریه.

Together with them, we decided where to start.

همراه با اونا، تصمیم گرفتیم از کجا شروع کنیم.

We picked this spot in Vila Cruzeiro,

این نقطه رو در ویلا کروزیرو انتخاب کردیم،

and houses are being plastered as we speak.

و همونطور که گفتیم خونه ها دارن گچکاری میشن.

And the good thing about them is that

و چیز خوب درباره اونا اینه که

they are deciding which houses go next.

اونا تصمیم میگیرن خونه بعدی کدومه.

They're even printing t-shirts,

اونا حتی تی شرتهایی چاپ میکنن،

they're putting up banners

بنرهایی میزارن

explaining everything to everybody,

که همه چیزو به همه کس توضیح میدن،

and talking to the press.

و با مطبوعات حرف میزنن.

This article about Angelo appeared.

این مقاله درباره آنجلو چاپ شد.

DU: So while this is happening,

هان: خوب در حالیکه این اتفاق میفته،

we are bringing this idea all over the world.

ما داریم این ایده رو به همه جای دنیا میاریم.

So, like the project we did in Philadelphia,

خوب، مثل پروژه ای که در فیلادلفیا انجام دادیم،

we are also invited to do workshops,

از ما برای تشکیل کارگاه هم دعوت میشه،

for instance in Curaçao,

مثلاً در کوراکائو،

and right now we're planning a huge project in Haiti.

و همین حالا یه پروژه عظیم در هائیتی در دست طراحی داریم.

JK: So the favela was not only the place

هاس: پس منطقه حومه ای جایی نبود

where this idea started:

که فقط این ایده شروع شد:

it was also the place that made it possible

منطقه حومه ای جایی بود که اجازه داد

to work without a master plan,

این ایده بدون طرح اولیه عملی بشه،

because these communities are informal —

چون این جوامع غیر رسمی هستن--

this was the inspiration —

این یه الهام بود--

and in a communal effort, together with the people,

و در یه تلاش جمعی همراه با اهالی،

you can almost work like in an orchestra,

تقریباً میتونین مثل یه ارکستر کار کنین،

where you can have a hundred instruments

جایی که میتونین صدها آلت موسیقی داشته باشین

playing together to create a symphony.

که با هم نواخته میشن تا یه سمفونی شکل بگیره.

DU: So we want to thank everybody who

هان: خوب میخوایم از همه افرادی تشکر کنیم که

wanted to become part of this dream

خواستن بخشی از این رؤیا باشن

and supported us along the way,

و از ما در طول مسیر حمایت کردن،

and we are looking at continuing.

و منتظر ادامه هستیم.

JK: Yeah. And so one day pretty soon,

هاس: بله. و خوب یه روز، به همین زودی،

when the colors start going up on these walls,

وقتی رنگها شروع کنن به بالا رفتن از این دیوارها،

we hope more people will join us,

and join this big dream,

and maybe one day, the whole of Vila Cruzeiro

will be painted.
