Haas&Hahn: How painting can transform communities

lies a community called Vila Cruzeiro,

and roughly 60,000 people live there.

Now, the people here in Rio mostly know

and unfortunately, news from Vila Cruzeiro often

is not good news.

But Vila Cruzeiro is also the place

where our story begins.

Jeroen Koolhaas: Ten years ago, we first came to Rio

to shoot a documentary about life in the favelas.

Now, we learned that favelas are informal communities.

それでファヴェーラが 不法居住者の街だと知りました

They emerged over the years

地方出身者が

when immigrants from the countryside

仕事を求めて都会に出てきて

came to the cities looking for work,

何年もかけて出来上がりました

like cities within the cities,

まるで都市の中の都市です

known for problems like crime, poverty,

犯罪や貧困 それから警察と麻薬組織との

and the violent drug war between

血みどろの

police and the drug gangs.

麻薬戦争で知られています

So what struck us was that

these were communities that the people

who lived there had built with their own hands,

without a master plan

and like a giant work in progress.

Where we're from, in Holland,

everything is planned.

We even have rules for how to follow the rules.

DU: So the last day of filming, we ended up

（ウルハーン）撮影最終日に

in Vila Cruzeiro, and we were sitting down

ヴィラ・クルゼイロにたどり着き

and we had a drink,

and we were overlooking this hill

家々が立ち並ぶ この丘を

with all these houses,

眺めていました

and most of these houses looked unfinished,

ほとんどの家は未完成のようで

and they had walls of bare brick,

壁のレンガはむき出しでしたが

but we saw some of these houses

何軒か 漆喰仕上げで

which were plastered and painted,

ペンキを塗った家がありました

and suddenly we had this idea:

その時急に思いついたんです

what would it look like if all these houses

この家々が全部 漆喰仕上げで

would be plastered and painted?

塗装されていたら どんな風になるだろう？

And then we imagined one big design,

こうして私たちは ひとつの大規模なデザイン —

one big work of art.

ひとつの大規模な芸術作品を 思い描いたんです

Who would expect something like that

誰がこんな場所で

in a place like this?

そんなことを考えるでしょう？

So we thought, would that even be possible?

そもそも そんなことが 出来るんだろうか？

So first we started to count the houses,

そこで まず家の軒数を数え始めましたが

but we soon lost count.

すぐに分からなくなりました

But somehow the idea stuck.

でもなぜかこのアイデアが 頭から離れなかったんです

JK: We had a friend.

（クールハース） 私たちには友人がいました

He ran an NGO in Vila Cruzeiro.

彼はヴィラ・クルゼイロで NGOを運営していました

His name was Nanko,

名前はナンコといいます

and he also liked the idea.

彼もこのアイデアを気に入って こう言いました

He said, "You know, everybody here

「ここの人はみんな —

would pretty much love to have their houses

外壁を仕上げて

plastered and painted.

塗装したら大喜びするだろう

It's when a house is finished."

それでやっと家が完成するんだから」

So he introduced us to the right people,

そして彼がふさわしい人々を 紹介してくれて

and Vitor and Maurinho became our crew.

We picked three houses in the center of the community

私たちは街の中心にある ３軒を選びそこから始めました

and we start here. We made a few designs,

and everybody liked this design

of a boy flying a kite the best.

So we started painting, and the first thing we did

was to paint everything blue,

and we thought that looked already pretty good.

それだけでも結構いいと思ったのに

But they hated it. The people who lived there really hated it.

住民はひどく嫌がり こう言いました

They said, "What did you do?

「お前ら何てことしたんだ？

You painted our house in exactly the same color

俺たちの家を

as the police station."

警察署と 同じ色に塗るなんて」

(Laughter)

（笑）

In a favela, that is not a good thing.

ファヴェーラには ふさわしくありません

Also the same color as the prison cell.

それに刑務所の監房も同じ色なんです

So we quickly went ahead and we painted the boy,

だからすぐ作業を進めて 少年を描きあげました

and then we thought we were finished,

完成したと思って

we were really happy, but still,

私たちは満足しましたが まだダメでした

it wasn't good because the little kids started coming up to us,

子供たちがやって来て言うんです

and they said, "You know, there's a boy flying the kite,

「凧をあげてる子は見えるけど

but where is his kite?"

凧はどこにあるの？」

We said, "Uh, it's art.

私たちは こう答えました

You know, you have to imagine the kite."

「これはアートなんだ 凧は想像しなよ」

(Laughter)

（笑）

And they said, "No, no, no, we want to see the kite."

それでも子供たちは 「ダメだよ 凧が見たいよ」と言うんです

So we quickly installed a kite

それで 丘のずっと上の方に

way up high on the hill,

凧を設置して

so that you could see the boy flying the kite

凧をあげる少年も

and you could actually see a kite.

凧も見えるようにしました

So the local news started writing about it,

地元の新聞が記事にしてくれました

which was great,

すごい事です

and then even The Guardian wrote about it:

ガーディアン紙にまで載りました

"Notorious slum becomes open-air gallery."

「悪名高いスラム街が 青空ギャラリーに」

JK: So, encouraged by this success,

（クールハース）私たちは この成功で自信をつけて

we went back to Rio for a second project,

次のプロジェクトのために リオへ戻ってきました

and we stumbled upon this street.

そして偶然 ある通りを見つけたんです

It was covered in concrete to prevent mudslides,

地滑り防止のコンクリートで覆われていて

and somehow we saw a sort of river in it,

何だか川みたいでした

and we imagined this river to be a river in Japanese style

そこで私たちは この通りを 錦鯉が上っているー

with koi carp swimming upstream.

日本風の川に見立てたんです

So we decided to paint that river,

そんな川を描くことに決めて

and we invited Rob Admiraal,

ロブ・アドミラールに声をかけました

who is a tattoo artist,

彼はタトゥーアーティストで

and he specialized in the Japanese style.

日本風の刺青が専門です

So little did we know that we would spend

その川を描くのに

almost an entire year painting that river,

丸一年近くもかかるとは 思いもしませんでした

together with Geovani and Robinho and Vitor,

一緒に作業したのは近所に住む ジョバーニとロビーニョと

who lived nearby.

ヴィトールでした

And we even moved into the neighborhood

さらに私たちは ここに引っ越して来ました

when one of the guys that lived on the street, Elias,

この通りに住むエリアスという人が

told us that we could come and live in his house,

自分の家族と一緒に住まないかと

together with his family,

誘ってくれたんです

which was fantastic.

素晴らしい経験でした

Unfortunately, during that time,

ところが残念なことに

another war broke out between the police

and the drug gangs.

また抗争を始めたんです

We learned that during those times,

people in communities really stick together

こういう大変な時こそ地域の人々が

during these times of hardship,

助け合うということです

but we also learned a very important element,

他にも とても大切な事を学びました

the importance of barbecues. (Laughter)

バーベキューの大切さです （笑）

Because, when you throw a barbecue,

バーベキューをやれば

it turns you from a guest into a host,

客である私たちも みんなをもてなせるんですから

so we decided to throw one

だからほぼ１週おきに

almost every other week,

バーベキューをやって

and we got to know everybody in the neighborhood.

近所のみんなと知り合いになりました

JK: We still had this idea of the hill, though.

（クールハース）ただ 丘の計画はまだ頭にありました

DU: Yeah, yeah, we were talking about

（ウルハーン）そうだね ２人でこの計画の

the scale of this, because this painting

規模について話していました

was incredibly big,

この作品は物凄く巨大で

and it was insanely detailed,

呆れるほど細かいせいで

and this process almost drove us completely insane ourselves.

計画を立てていると すっかり頭が変になりそうでした

But we figured that maybe, during this process,

ただ私たちは思いました このプロセス つまり

all the time that we had spent in the neighborhood

地域で過ごす時間が

was maybe actually even more important

色を塗ることそのものよりも

than the painting itself.

本当はずっと大事じゃないかって

JK: So after all that time,

（クールハース）その後もずっと

this hill, this idea was still there,

丘の計画は頭にあったので

and we started to make sketches,

スケッチや模型を作り始めて

models, and we figured something out.

ある結論に達しました

We figured that our ideas, our designs

アイデアやデザインを

had to be a little bit more simple than that last project

前回のプロジェクトより 少しだけシンプルにすれば

so that we could paint with more people

もっと多くの人が参加できるし

and cover more houses at the same time.

同時により多くの家を カバーできると考えたんです

And we had an opportunity to try that out

それを試す機会にも恵まれました

in a community in the central part of Rio,

リオの中心部にある —

which is called Santa Marta,

サンタ・マルタという地域です

and we made a design for this place

私たちはこの場所向けに

which looked like this,

こんなデザインをして

and then we got people to go along with it

人々に協力を求めました

because turns out that if your idea is ridiculously big,

結局アイデアが呆れるほど大規模なら

it's easier to get people to go along with this. (Laughter)

むしろ喜んで協力してくれるのです （笑）

And the people of Santa Marta

サンタ・マルタの人々が力を合わせて

got together and in a little over a month

１か月余りで

they turned that square into this.

一区画を こんな風に仕上げました

(Applause)

And this image somehow went all over the world.

この画像は なぜか世界中に広まりました

DU: So then we received an unexpected phone call

（ウルハーン）そして 思いがけない所から電話がきました

from the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program,

それはフィラデルフィア 壁画アートプログラムからで

and they had this question

尋ねたいことがあると言うんです

if this idea, our approach,

私たちのアイデアや方法が

if this would actually work in North Philly,

アメリカ有数の貧困地区である —

which is one of the poorest neighborhoods

ノース・フィラデルフィアでも

in the United States.

上手くいくだろうか という質問でした

So we immediately said yes.

私たちは即イエスと答えました

We had no idea how,

方法は決めていませんでしたが

but it seemed like a very interesting challenge,

すごく面白そうだと思ったんです

so we did exactly the same as we did in Rio,

だからまずリオの時と全く同じように

and we moved into the neighborhood

その地域に引っ越して

and started barbecuing.

バーベキューを始めました

(Laughter)

So the project took almost two years to complete,

このプロジェクトは完成までに 約２年かかりました

and we made individual designs

色を塗った街路に面する家は

for every single house on the avenue that we painted,

全部 １軒ずつデザインしました

and we made these designs together

地元の商店主や

with the local store owners, the building owners,

ビルの所有者や 十数人の若者達と

and a team of about a dozen young men and women.

一緒になってデザインしたんです

They were hired, and then they were trained as painters,

彼らを雇って塗装の訓練をし

and together they transformed their own neighborhood,

みんなで自分たちの 地域の街並み全体を

the whole street, into a giant patchwork of color.

巨大な色のパッチワークに変えたんです

(Applause)

And at the end, the city of Philadelphia

最終的にフィラデルフィア市は

thanked every single one of them

彼ら一人ひとりに

and gave them a merit for their accomplishment.

JK: So now we had painted a whole street.

（クールハース）私たちは 街並み全体を塗りました

How about we do this whole hill now?

じゃあ丘全体なら どうなるでしょう？

We started looking for funding,

資金の調達先を探し始めてはみたものの

but instead, we just ran into questions,

たくさんの問題に 突き当たるばかりでした

like, how many houses are you going to paint?

例えば 家は何軒塗ればいいのか？

How many square meters is that?

どれ位の面積になるのか？

How much paint are you going to use,

ペンキはどれだけ必要になるのか？

and how many people are you going to employ?

何人雇えばいいのか？

And we did try for years to write plans

私たちは実際に 何年もかけて資金計画を書き

for the funding and answer all those questions,

あらゆる疑問に答えを出そうとしました

but then we thought,

ただその一方で

in order to answer all those questions,

疑問に全部答えるには

you have to know exactly what you're going to do

現場で作業を始める前に

before you actually get there and start.

やろうとする事を正確に 知っている必要があるんです

And maybe it's a mistake to think like that.

でも そんな考え方自体 間違っているのかも知れません

It would lose some of the magic that we had learned

私たちが学んできた魔法 つまり

about that if you go somewhere

どこかに出かけて行って

and you spend time there,

そこで過ごしていれば

you can let the project grow organically

計画は自然に膨らんでいって

and have a life of its own.

生命が宿るという 魔法が消えてしまうんじゃないか

DU: So what we did is

（ウルハーン）だから私たちは

we decided to take this plan and strip it away

この計画から数字も発想も仮定も

from all the numbers

全部取り除いて

and all the ideas and presumptions

最初のアイデアに

and just go back to the base idea,

立ち返ろうと決めたんです

which was to transform this hill

この丘を巨大な

into a giant work of art.

アートにするというアイデアです

And instead of looking for funding,

そしてスポンサーを探す代わりに

we started a crowdfunding campaign,

クラウドファンディングの キャンペーンを始め

and in a little over a month,

１か月ちょっとで

more than 1,500 people put together

1,500人以上が協力して

and donated over 100,000 dollars.

10万ドル以上を寄付してくれました

So for us, this was an amazing moment, because now —

これは私たちにとって 素晴らしい瞬間でした なぜなら —

(Applause) —

because now we finally had the freedom

なぜなら私たちはこの時やっと 学んできた事を生かして —

to use all the lessons that we had learned

ファヴェーラが出来たのと同じ様に

and create a project that was built

the same way that the favela was built,

なったんですから

from the ground on up, bottom up,

つまり全体計画など立てず

with no master plan.

一からボトムアップで 作り上げるんです

JK: So we went back, and we employed Angelo,

（クールハース）私たちは戻って アンジェロを雇いました

and he's a local artist from Vila Cruzeiro,

彼はヴィラ・クルゼイロ出身の

very talented guy, and he knows almost everybody there,

アーティストで 多才な上に顔が広いんです

and then we employed Elias, our former landlord

それからエリアスも雇いました

who invited us into his house,

以前 私たちを自分の家に

and he's a master of construction.

住み込ませてくれた人で 大工の親方です

Together with them, we decided where to start.

彼らと どこから着手するか決めました

We picked this spot in Vila Cruzeiro,

and houses are being plastered as we speak.

And the good thing about them is that

they are deciding which houses go next.

次にどの家にするか決めていることです

They're even printing t-shirts,

さらにTシャツまで作り

they're putting up banners

誰にでも全てが分かるように

explaining everything to everybody,

and talking to the press.

DU: So while this is happening,

we are bringing this idea all over the world.

So, like the project we did in Philadelphia,

we are also invited to do workshops,

キュラソーなどに招かれて

for instance in Curaçao,

ワークショップを開催していますし

and right now we're planning a huge project in Haiti.

ハイチでは大規模な プロジェクトを計画中です

JK: So the favela was not only the place

（クールハース） ファヴェーラは このアイデアの

where this idea started:

発信源というだけではありません

it was also the place that made it possible

そこは全体計画などなくても

to work without a master plan,

作品を作れる場所でもあったんです

because these communities are informal —

それは ここが不法住居地域だからです

this was the inspiration —

これは啓示でした

and in a communal effort, together with the people,

そして地域の人々と共に汗をかくことで

you can almost work like in an orchestra,

オーケストラみたいに作業できます

where you can have a hundred instruments

そこでは100種類の楽器を

playing together to create a symphony.

一斉に奏でて シンフォニーを生み出せます

DU: So we want to thank everybody who

（ウルハーン）だから 私たちはこの夢に参加して

wanted to become part of this dream

ずっと支えてくれた

and supported us along the way,

みんなに感謝したいし

and we are looking at continuing.

これからも続けるつもりです

JK: Yeah. And so one day pretty soon,

（クールハース）そうだね だから近い将来 —

when the colors start going up on these walls,

いろんな色が 壁を彩り始める時には

we hope more people will join us,

もっと多くの人々に

and join this big dream,

この壮大な夢に加わって欲しいですね

and maybe one day, the whole of Vila Cruzeiro

そうすれば いつか ヴィラ・クルゼイロ全体が

will be painted.

美しく彩られることになるでしょう
