Twenty years ago,

۲۰ سال پیش،

my family introduced a system called "Friday Democracy Meetings."

خانواده‌ام سیستمی را معرفی کرد به نام «جلسات جمعه دمکراسی».

Every Friday at 7pm, my family came together for an official meeting

هر جمعه راس ساعت ۷ شب، خانواده‌ام برای نشستی رسمی دورهم جمع می‌شد

to discuss the current family affairs.

تا مسائل خانوادگی روزانه را بحث کنند.

These meetings were facilitated by one of my parents,

این جلسه‌ها را یکی از والدینم هدایت می کرد

and we even had a notetaker.

و آن یکی صورت جلسه می‌کرد.

These meetings had two rules.

این جلسه‌ها دو مقررات داشت.

First, you are allowed to speak open and freely.

نخست، اجازه داشتی صریح و آزادانه حرف بزنی.

Us kids were allowed to criticize our parents

ما بچه‌ها اجازه داشتیم از والدینمان انتقاد کنیم

without that being considered disrespectful or rude.

بدون این که بی‌ادبی یا بی احترامی کرده باشیم.

Second rule was the Chatham House rule,

دومین مقررات،‌ قانون چتهم هاوس نام داشت.

meaning whatever is said in the meeting stays in the meeting.

یعنی هر چه در جلسه گفته می‌شد در همان جلسه می‌ماند.

The topics which were discussed in these meetings

موضوعات بحث شده در این جلسات

varied from one week to another.

از این هفته با آن هفته فرق می‌کرد.

One week, we'd talk about what food we wanted to eat,

یک هفته، درباره خوراکیهایی که می‌خواستیم بخوریم حرف می‌زدیم،

what time us kids should go to bed

این که ما بچه‌ها چه وقتی به رختخواب برویم

and how to improve things as a family,

و چطور اوضاع را در خانواده‌مان بهتر کنیم.

while another meeting discussed pretty much events that happened at school

در حالیکه جلسه بعدی بیشتر درباره اتفاقات پیش‌آمده در مدرسه بود

and how to solve disputes between siblings,

و این که دعوای خواهر برادری چطور حل و فصل شود،

by which I mean real fights.

منظورم دعواهای راستکی است.

At the end of each meeting, we'd reach decisions and agreements

در آخر هر جلسه، تصمیم‌گیریهایی و موافقتهایی می‌کردیم

that would last at least until the next meeting.

که حداقل تا هفته بعد طول می‌کشیدند.

So you could say I was raised as a politician.

پس می‌توانید بگویید که یک سیاستمدار تربیت شدم.

By the age of six or seven, I mastered politics.

در سن شش یا هفت سالگی، استاد سیاست شدم.

I was negotiating, compromising,

building alliances with other political actors.

And I even once tried to jeopardize the political process.

These meetings sound very peaceful, civil and democratic, right?

این جلسات بسیار صلح‌آمیز، مدنی و دمکراتیک به نظر می رسند؟

But that was not always the case.

اما همیشه داستان اینطور نیست.

Because of this open, free space to talk, discuss and criticize,

بخاطر همین فضای آزاد و باز برای بحث و انتقاد،

things sometimes got really heated.

اوضاع گاهی می‌تواند جنجالی شود.

One meeting went really bad for me.

یک جلسه خیلی برایم بد تمام شد.

I was about 10 years old at that time,

آن موقع ۱۰ سال داشتم

and I'd done something really horrible at school,

و کار خیلی بدی در مدرسه انجام داده بودم،

which I'm not going to share today --

که امروزاز آن حرفی نمی زنم--

but my brother decided to bring it up in the meeting.

اما برادرم در جلسه آن را مطرح کرد.

I could not defend myself,

نتوانستم از خودم دفاع کنم،

so I decided to withdraw from the meeting and boycott the whole system.

پس تصمیم گرفتم از جلسه بیرون بروم و کل سیستم را تحریم کنم.

I literally wrote an official letter and handed it to my dad,

در واقع یک نامه رسمی نوشتم و به پدرم دادم با اعلام این که

announcing that I am boycotting.

جلسات را تحریم می‌کنم.

I thought that if I stopped attending these meetings anymore,

فکر کردم اگر در جلسات حاضر نشوم

the system would collapse,

سیستم فرو بپاشد.

(Laughter)

but my family continued with the meetings,

اما خانواده‌ام به این جلسات ادامه داد،

and they often made decisions that I disliked.

و آنها اغلب تصمیماتی می‌گرفتند که من علیه‌ش بودم.

But I could not challenge these decisions,

اما نمی‌توانستم این تصمیم‌ها را به چالش بکشم،

because I was not attending the meetings,

and thus had no right to go against it.

Ironically, when I turned about 13 years old,

I ended up attending one of these meetings again,

after I boycotted them for a long time.

Because there was an issue that was affecting me only,

and no other family member was bringing it up.

و دغدغه بقیه اعضای خانواده نبود.

The problem was that after each dinner,

مشکل این بود که هر شب بعد از شام،

I was always the only one who was asked to wash the dishes,

همیشه تنها کسی بودم که باید ظرفها را می‌شستم،

while my brothers didn't have to do anything about it.

در حالیکه بردارنم مجبور به این کار نبودند.

I felt this was unjust, unfair and discriminatory,

حس می‌کردم ناعادلانه و تبعیض‌آمیز است،

so I wanted to discuss it in the meeting.

پس می‌خواستم توی جلسه درباره‌‌ش بحث کنم.

As you know, the idea that it's a woman or a girl's role to do household work

همانطور که می‌دانید این ایده که نقش یک زن یا دختر انجام کارهای خانه است

is a rule that has been carried out by many societies for so long,

قانونی است که در خیلی از جوامع از قدیم دایر است

so in order for a 13-year-old me to challenge it, I needed a platform.

بنابراین برای من ۱۳ ساله که بخواهم آن را به چالش بکشم سکویی لازم بود.

In the meeting, my brothers argued

در جلسه، برادرانم استدلال‌شان این بود که

that none of the other boys we knew were washing the dishes,

هیچ پسر دیگری را نمی‌شناسند که ظرف بشورد،

so why should our family be any different?

پس چرا باید در خانواده ما فرق کند؟

But my parents agreed with me and decided that my brothers should assist me.

اما والدینم با من موافق بودند و تصمیم گرفتند که برادرهایم باید به من کمک کنند.

However, they could not force them, so the problem continued.

به هرحال، نمی‌توانستند که انها را مجبور کنند و مشکل پابرجا بود.

Seeing no solution to my problem, I decided to attend another meeting

and propose a new system that would be fair to everyone.

So I suggested instead of one person

washing all the dishes used by all the family members,

each family member should wash their own dishes.

And as a gesture of good faith,

I said I'd wash the pots as well.

This way, my brothers could no longer argue

that it wasn't within their responsibility

as boys or men to wash the dishes and clean after the family,

because the system I proposed was about every member of the family

cleaning after themselves and taking care of themselves.

Everyone agreed to my proposal,

and for years, that was our washing-the-dishes system.

What I just shared with you is a family story,

but it's pure politics.

Every part of politics includes decision-making,

هر جزی از سیاست شامل تصمیم‌گیری است،

and ideally, the process of decision-making

و ایده‌آل‌تر از همه، روال تصمیم‌گیری

should include people from different backgrounds,

باید شامل آدمهایی با پس‌زمینه‌های مختلف باشد:

interests, opinions, gender,

علاقمندی‌ها، عقاید، جنسیت،

beliefs, race, ethnicity, age, and so on.

باورها، نژاد، قومیت، سن و غیره.

And they should all have an equal opportunity to contribute

و آنها همه باید از فرصت مساوی برای سهم داشتن در روال

to the decision-making process and influence the decisions

تصمیم‌گیری و نفوذ در تصمیماتی برخوردار باشند

that will affect their lives directly or indirectly.

که بر زندگی‌ آنها را مستقیم یا غیرمستقیم اثر خواهد گذاشت.

As such, I find it difficult to understand when I hear young people saying,

برای همین برایم قابل هضم نیست وقتی می‌شنوم جوانان می‌گویند:

"I'm too young to engage in politics or to even hold a political opinion."

«من برای مشارکت در سیاست و داشتن عقیده سیاسی خیلی جوانم.»

Similarly, when I hear some women saying,

همینطور وقتی از سوی برخی زنان می‌شنوم که می‌گویند:

"Politics is a dirty world I don't want to engage with,"

« دنیای سیاست کثیف است نمی‌خواهم در آن دخالت داشته باشم.»

I'm worried that the idea of politics and political engagement

متاسفانه این ایده سیاست و مشارکت در سیاست

has become so polarized in many parts of the world

در خیلی از جاهای دنیا طوری جا افتاده

that ordinary people feel, in order for them to participate in politics,

که مردم عادی حس می‌کنند برای مشارکت داشتن در سیاست

they need to be outspoken activists,

لازم است کنشگرهای معترض باشند،

and that is not true.

و این درست نیست.

I want to ask these young people, women and ordinary people in general:

می‌خواهم از این آدمهای جوان، زنان و مردم عادی به طور عام بپرسم:

Can you really afford not to be interested or not to participate in politics?

آیا واقعا استطاعت علاقمند نبودن یا مشارکت نکردن در سیاست‌ را دارید؟

Politics is not only activism.

سیاست تنها کنشگری نیست.

It's awareness,

آگاهی است،

it's keeping ourselves informed, it's caring for the facts.

مطلع نگهداشتن خودمان است، اهمیت دادن درباره حقایق است.

When it's possible, it's casting a vote.

در وقت ممکن رای دادن است.

Politics is the tool through which we structure ourselves

سیاست ابزاری است که از طریق آن ساختار خود را بعنوان گروه

as groups and societies.

و جامعه بنا می‌نهیم.

Politics governs every aspect of life,

سیاست همه بخشهای زندگی را اداره می‌کند،

and by not participating in it,

و با مشارکت نکردن در آن،

you're literally allowing other people to decide on what you can eat, wear,

در واقع به دیگران اجازه می‌دهید درباره کجا بودن و آنچه می‌توانید بخورید،

if you can have access to health care,

دسترسی به سیستم بهداشتی، تحصیلات رایگان،

free education,

چقدر مالیات پرداخت کنید،

how much tax you pay,

چه وقت می‌توانید بازنشسته شوید،

when you can retire,

حقوق بازنشسنتگی شما چقدر است

what is your pension.

تصمیم بگیرند.

Other people are also deciding on whether your race and ethnicity

دیگر آدمها با در نظر گرفتن قومیت و نژاد شما تصمیم می‌گیرند

is enough to consider you a criminal,

که مجرم هستید

or if your religion and nationality is enough to put you on a terrorist list.

یا مذهب و ملیت شما برای قرار دادن شما در فهرست تروریستی کفایت می‌کند یا خیر.

And if you still think you are a strong, independent human being

و اگر هنوز فکر می‌کنید یک انسان مستقل، قوی هستید

unaffected by politics,

که سیاست تاثیری بر شما ندارد.

then think twice.

پس دوباره فکر کنید.

I am speaking to you as a young woman from Libya,

من با شما به عنوان زن جوانی از لیبی صحبت می‌کنم،

a country that is in the middle of a civil war.

کشوری که در وسط یک جنگ داخلی است.

After more than 40 years of authoritarian rule,

بعد از ۴۰ سال حکومت خودکامه،

it's not a place where political engagement

by women and young people is possible, nor encouraged.

و جوانان نه ممکن است و نه تشویق می‌شود.

Almost all political dialogues that took place in the past few years,

تقریبا تمامی دیالوگ‌های سیاسی که طی چند سال گذشته رخ داده،

even those gathered by foreign powers,

has been with only middle-aged men in the room.

But in places with a broken political system like Libya,

or in seemingly functioning places, including international organizations,

the systems we have nowadays for political decision-making

are not from the people for the people,

از سوی مردمی نیست که نماینده‌ مردم باشند،

but they have been established by the few for the few.

بلکه از سوی معدودی برای همان جمعیت معدود دایر شدند.

And these few have been historically almost exclusively men,

و این جمعیت معدود در تاریخ اکثرا بطور خاص مردانه بوده،

and they've produced laws, policies,

و آنها قوانین و سیاستها، مکانیسم‌هایی را

mechanisms for political participation that are based on the opinions,

برای مشارکت سیاسی ایجاد کرده‌اند که بر مبنای عقاید،

beliefs, worldviews, dreams,

باورها، جهان بینی، رویاها،

aspirations of this one group of people,

الهامات این گروه از مردم است،

while everyone else was kept out.

در حالیکه بقیه را دخالت نداده‌اند.

After all, we've all heard some version of this sentence:

در نهایت همه ما تقریبا این حرف را شنیده‌ایم:

"What does a woman, let alone a young person, who is brown,

«حالا زنها که هیچ، جوانها و رنگین پوستها

understand about politics?"

از سیاست چه می‌فهمند؟»

When you're young --

وقتی جوان هستید،

and in many parts of the world, a woman --

و در خیلی از جاهای دنیا، یک زن--

you often hear experienced politicians say, "But you lack political experience."

اغلب می‌شنوید که سیاستمدارن باتجربه می‌گویند، «شما فاقد تجربه سیاسی هستید.»

And when I hear that,

و وقتی آن را می‌شنوم،

I wonder what sort of experience are they referring to?

به خودم می‌گویم منظورشان چه نوع تجربه‌ای است؟

The experience of corrupted political systems?

تجربه سیستم‌های سیاسی فاسد؟

Or of waging wars?

یا مشارکت در جنگ‌ها؟

Or are they referring to the experience

یا اشاره دارند به تجربه‌ای

of putting the interests of economic profits

before those of the environment?

محیط‌زیست؟

Because if this is political experience,

زیرا اگر این تجربه سیاسی است،

then yes --

we, as women and young people, have no political experience at all.

ما به عنوان زنان و جوانان هیچ تجربه سیاسی نداریم.

Now, politicians might not be the only ones to blame,

حال، شاید فقط سیاستمدران را نباید سرزنش کنیم،

because ordinary people, and many young people as well,

don't care about politics.

And even those who care don't know how to participate.

This must change, and here is my proposal.

We need to teach people at an early age

about decision-making and how to be part of it.

و مشارکت داشتن یاد بدهیم.

Every family is its own mini political system

هر خانواده‌ای سیستم سیاسی کوچک خودش را دارد

that is usually not democratic,

که ممولا دمکراتیک نیست،

because parents make decisions that affect all members of the family,

زیرا والدین تصمیم‌هایی می‌گیرند که بر همه اعضای خانواده اثر می‌گذارد،

while the kids have very little to say.

Similarly, politicians make decisions that affect the whole nation,

while the people have very little say in them.

We need to change this,

and in order to achieve this change systematically,

we need to teach people

that political, national and global affairs

are as relevant to them as personal and family affairs.

So if we want to achieve this, my proposal and advice is,

try out the Family Democracy Meeting system.

Because that will enable your kids to exercise their agency

and decision-making from a very early age.

و تصمیم‌گیری از سن خیلی پایین می‌کند.

Politics is about having conversations,

سیاست درباره مکالمه داشتن‌ است،

including difficult conversations,

that lead to decisions.

And in order to have a conversation, you need to participate,

not sign off like I did when I was a kid

and then learn the lesson the hard way and have to go back again.

If you include your kids in family conversations,

اگر کودکان‌تان را در گفتگوهای خانوادگی دخالت دهید،

they will grow up

زمانی که بزرگ شوند

and know how to participate in political conversations.

بلد خواهند بود که چطور در گفتگوهای سیاسی شرکت کنند.

And most importantly, most importantly,

و از همه مهم‌تر، تکرار می‌کنم از همه مهم‌تر

they will help others engage.

به دخالت داشتن آنها کمک خواهد کرد.
