Twenty years ago,

بیست ساڵ پێش ئێستا،

my family introduced a system called "Friday Democracy Meetings."

خانەوادەکەم سیستەمێکیان ناساند پێیان دەگووت" کۆبوونەوەی دیموکراسی هەینی."

Every Friday at 7pm, my family came together for an official meeting

to discuss the current family affairs.

These meetings were facilitated by one of my parents,

and we even had a notetaker.

These meetings had two rules.

ئەو کۆبوونەوانە دوو یاسایان هەبوو،

First, you are allowed to speak open and freely.

یەکەمیان، ڕێگەت پێدراوە بە ئازادی بۆچونی خۆت دەربڕیت.

Us kids were allowed to criticize our parents

وەک منداڵەکان ڕێگەدرابوون ڕەخنە لەدایک و باوکیان بگرن

without that being considered disrespectful or rude.

بەبێ هیچ جۆرە بێرێزییەک یان شکاندنەوەک.

Second rule was the Chatham House rule,

دووەمین یاسایی چاتهام هاوس بوو،

meaning whatever is said in the meeting stays in the meeting.

The topics which were discussed in these meetings

varied from one week to another.

One week, we'd talk about what food we wanted to eat,

هەینییەکیان، قسەمان دەکرد سەبارەت بە چ خۆراکێک دەمانەوێت بیخۆین ،

what time us kids should go to bed

چ کاتێک پێویستە منداڵەکان بچن بخەون

and how to improve things as a family,

و وەک خێزانیێ چۆن شتەکان بەرەو پێشەوە ببەین.

while another meeting discussed pretty much events that happened at school

کۆبوونەوەیەکی دیکە سەبارەت بەو ڕووداوانەی لە خوێندنگە ڕوویدابوو قسەمان دەکرد

and how to solve disputes between siblings,

و چۆن شەڕی نێون خوشک و براکان چارەبکرێت،

by which I mean real fights.

مەبەستم شەڕی ڕاستییە.

At the end of each meeting, we'd reach decisions and agreements

لە کۆتایی هەر کۆبووبەوەیەکدا هاوڕادەبووین و بڕیارمان دەدا کە کێشەکان

that would last at least until the next meeting.

بەلایەنی کەمەوە کۆتایی پێدەهات تاوەکو کۆبوونەوەی دواتر.

So you could say I was raised as a politician.

کەواتە دەتوانیت بڵێت وەک سیاسەتمەدارێک گەوەرەبووم.

By the age of six or seven, I mastered politics.

لە تەمەنی شەس ساڵی یان حەفت ساڵی، شارەزای سیاسەت بووم.

I was negotiating, compromising,

گفتوگۆم دەکرد، مامەڵەم دەکرد،

building alliances with other political actors.

هاوپەیمانیم بنیات دەنا لەگەڵ کارەکتەرە سیاسیەکانیتر.

And I even once tried to jeopardize the political process.

These meetings sound very peaceful, civil and democratic, right?

But that was not always the case.

Because of this open, free space to talk, discuss and criticize,

things sometimes got really heated.

One meeting went really bad for me.

یەک لە کۆبوونەوەکان بۆ من زۆر خراپ بوو.

I was about 10 years old at that time,

لەو کاتەدا تەمەنم نزیکەی ١٠ساڵ بوو،

and I'd done something really horrible at school,

و لە قوتابخانە کارێکی قێزەونم ئەنجام دابوو،

which I'm not going to share today --

کەوا نامەوێت ئەمڕۆ باسی بکەم--

but my brother decided to bring it up in the meeting.

بەڵام براکەم بڕیاری دابوو لە کۆبوونەوەکەدا بیوروژێنێت.

I could not defend myself,

نەم دەتوانی بەرگری لە خۆم بکەم،

so I decided to withdraw from the meeting and boycott the whole system.

بڕیارمدا لەکۆبوونەوەکە بکشێمەوە بایکۆتی هەموو سیستەمەکە بکەم.

I literally wrote an official letter and handed it to my dad,

بەتەواوەتی نامەیەکی ڕەسمیم نووسی و دامە دەست باوکم،

announcing that I am boycotting.

وام پیشاندا بایکۆتی کۆبونەوەکان دەکەم.

I thought that if I stopped attending these meetings anymore,

پێموابوو ئەگەر چیتر لە کۆبوونەوەکان ئامادەنەبم،

the system would collapse,

but my family continued with the meetings,

بەڵام خانەوادەکەم لە کۆبوونەوەکان بەردەوام بوون،

and they often made decisions that I disliked.

و زۆر جار بڕیارێکیاندەدا کەوا بەدڵی من نەبوو.

But I could not challenge these decisions,

بەڵام نەمدەتوانی بەرەنگاری ئەوە بڕیارانە بکەم،

because I was not attending the meetings,

چونکە لە کۆبوونەوەکان ئامادە نەبووم،

and thus had no right to go against it.

و مافی ئەوەشم نەبوو دژایەتییان بکەم.

Ironically, when I turned about 13 years old,

بەشێوەیەکی سەیر، کاتێک تەمەنم بوو بە١٣ساڵ.

I ended up attending one of these meetings again,

بایکۆتم شکاند. دووبارە لە یەکێک لە کۆبونەوەکان بەشدار بووم

after I boycotted them for a long time.

دوای کاتێکی زۆر لە بایکۆت کردنیان.

Because there was an issue that was affecting me only,

چونکە گرفتێک هەبوو کەوا تەنها کاریگەری لە من دەکرد،

and no other family member was bringing it up.

The problem was that after each dinner,

گرفتەکە ئەوە بوو دوای هەر نانخواردنێکی ئێوارن،

I was always the only one who was asked to wash the dishes,

هەمیشە تەنها من داوام لێدەکرا قاپەکان بشۆم،

while my brothers didn't have to do anything about it.

لە کاتێکدا براکانم سەبارەت بەم کارە مێشیان میوان نەبوو.

I felt this was unjust, unfair and discriminatory,

هەستم کرد ئەوە نادادییە، نایەکسانییە و دیموکراسی نییە،

so I wanted to discuss it in the meeting.

کەواتە دەمویست لە کۆبوونەوەکە گفتوگۆی لەبارەوە بکەن.

As you know, the idea that it's a woman or a girl's role to do household work

وەک دەزانن، بیروکەی کەوا ژنێک یان کچێک کاری ماڵەوە ئەنجام دەدات

is a rule that has been carried out by many societies for so long,

یاساکە کەوا زۆر لە مێژە جێگیر بووە لەلایەن زۆربەی کۆمەڵگەکانەوە.

so in order for a 13-year-old me to challenge it, I needed a platform.

کەواتە بۆ کەسێکی تەمەن ١٣ساڵ دژایەتی ئەوە بکات، پێویستی بە پلاتفۆڕمێکە.

In the meeting, my brothers argued

لە کۆبوونەوەکە، براکانمان ناڕازیبوون

that none of the other boys we knew were washing the dishes,

کەوا هیچ کورێکی دیکەی ناناسن کە قاپەکان بشۆن،

so why should our family be any different?

کەواتە بۆچی خێزانەکەی ئێمە جیاوازبێت؟

But my parents agreed with me and decided that my brothers should assist me.

بەڵام دایک و باوکم هاوڕامبوون بڕیاریاندا براکانم پێویستە یارمەتیم بدەن.

However, they could not force them, so the problem continued.

هەرچۆنیک بێت، نەیانتوانی فشار بکەن کەواتە گرفتەکە بەردەوەم بوو.

Seeing no solution to my problem, I decided to attend another meeting

چارەسەر بۆ گرفتەکەم نەبوو بڕیارمدا لە کۆبوونەوەیەکی دیکە ئامادەببەم

and propose a new system that would be fair to everyone.

و پێشنیازکردنی سیستەمێکی نوێ کەوا بۆ هەموو کەسێک یەکسانە.

So I suggested instead of one person

پێشنیازمکرد لەجیاتی ئەوەی یەک کەس

washing all the dishes used by all the family members,

ئەو قاپانە بشۆن کە لەلایەن خێزانەکەوە پیس کراون.

each family member should wash their own dishes.

هەریەک لە ئەندامانی خانەوادەکە پێویستە دەفرەکانی خۆی بشوات.

And as a gesture of good faith,

و وەک هێمایەکی نیازپاکی،

I said I'd wash the pots as well.

گوتم مەنجەڵەکانیش من دەیان شۆم.

This way, my brothers could no longer argue

ئەوە ڕێگەیە، براکانم نەیانتوانی چیتر ناڕەزایی دەرببڕن

that it wasn't within their responsibility

کەوا ئەوە لە ئەستۆی ئەواندا نەبوو

as boys or men to wash the dishes and clean after the family,

وەک کورێک یان پیاوێک قاپەکان بشۆن و لە دوای خانەوادەکە پاکی بکەنەوە،

because the system I proposed was about every member of the family

چونکە ئەو سیستمەی پێشنیازم کردبوو دەربارەی هەموو ئەندامێکی خانەوادەکە

cleaning after themselves and taking care of themselves.

دوای خۆیان دەفرەکانیان پاک بکەنەوە و ئاگاداری خۆیان ببن.

Everyone agreed to my proposal,

هەموویان بە پێشنیازەکەم قایلبوون،

and for years, that was our washing-the-dishes system.

و بۆ چەند ساڵێک، ئەوە سیستەمی دەفر شوشتنی ئێمە بوو.

What I just shared with you is a family story,

ئەوەی لەگەڵ ئێوە باسم کرد تەنها چیرۆکی خێزانێکە،

but it's pure politics.

بەڵام ئەوە سیاسەتێکی ڕوونە.

Every part of politics includes decision-making,

هەموو بەشێکی سیاسەت بڕیاردان لەخۆی دەگرێت،

and ideally, the process of decision-making

و نموونەی، پرۆسەی بڕیاردان

should include people from different backgrounds,

پێویستە خەڵکانێک لە خۆبگرێت لە باکگراوندی جیاواز،

interests, opinions, gender,

ئارەزوو، بیرووڕا، جێندەر

beliefs, race, ethnicity, age, and so on.

باوڕ، ڕەگەز، دەست پاکی، تەمەن، و ئەوانی دیکەش.

And they should all have an equal opportunity to contribute

و پێویستە هەموو هەلێکی یەکسانیان هەبێت بۆ بەژداریکردن

to the decision-making process and influence the decisions

بۆ پرۆسە بڕیاردان و کاریگەری بڕیارەکان

that will affect their lives directly or indirectly.

کەوا بەشێوە یەکی ڕاستەوخۆ یان ناڕاستەوخۆ کاریگەری لە ژیانیان دەکات.

As such, I find it difficult to understand when I hear young people saying,

تێگەیشتن قورسە کاتێک گوێبیستی قسەکانی کەسانی گەنج دەبەم،

"I'm too young to engage in politics or to even hold a political opinion."

من زۆر گەنجم تا لەسیاسەت بەژداری بکەم" یان تەنانەت بۆ بەڕێوەبردنی پۆستێکی سیاسی."

Similarly, when I hear some women saying,

هەروەها، کاتێک قسەی هەندێک ژن دەبیستم،

"Politics is a dirty world I don't want to engage with,"

سیاسەت جیهانێکی پیسە" نامەوێت لەگەڵ یان بەشداری بکەم،"

I'm worried that the idea of politics and political engagement

نیگەران بووم کەوا بیرۆکەی سیاسی و بەژداری سیاسی

has become so polarized in many parts of the world

زۆر جیا واز بووە لە زۆر بەی بەشەکانی جیهان

that ordinary people feel, in order for them to participate in politics,

کەوا خەڵکی ئاسایی هەستی پێدەکەن، بۆ بەژداریکردن لە سیاسەت،

they need to be outspoken activists,

پێویستە ببەن بە چالاکوانی زمان پاراو،

and that is not true.

و ئەوە ڕاست نییە.

I want to ask these young people, women and ordinary people in general:

بە شێوە یەکی گشتی دەمەوێت پرسیارێک لە ژنە گەنجەکان و خەڵکە ئاسایەکان بکەم:

Can you really afford not to be interested or not to participate in politics?

دڵنییان ناتوان ئارەزووی بەشداریکردن لە سیاسەت بکەن؟

Politics is not only activism.

سیاسەت تەنها خەبات نییە.

It's awareness,

هۆشیارییە،

it's keeping ourselves informed, it's caring for the facts.

شارەزای خۆمانە گرنگیدانە بە ڕاستی.

When it's possible, it's casting a vote.

کاتێک ئەوە مەحاڵە، ئەوە بەهای دەنگەکەیە.

Politics is the tool through which we structure ourselves

سیاسەت ئامرازێکە کە لە ڕێگەیەوە خۆمان پێک دەهێنین

as groups and societies.

وەک گروپەکان و کۆمەڵگەکان.

Politics governs every aspect of life,

سیاسەت هەموو ڕوخسارەکانی ژیان حوکم دەکات،

and by not participating in it,

و بە بەژداری نەکردن لێی، تۆ ڕێگە

you're literally allowing other people to decide on what you can eat, wear,

بەکەسانی دیکە دەدەیت کە لە جیاتی تۆ بڕیار لەسەر خواردنت بدەن، لە جلوبەرگت، یان

if you can have access to health care,

دەتوانی دەستت بە چارەسەرە پزیشکەیەکان بگات یان

free education,

یان خوێندنی خۆڕایی

how much tax you pay,

چەندە باج دەدەیت،

when you can retire,

کەی خانەنشین دەبیت،

what is your pension.

موچەی خانەنشینیەکەت چەند دەبێت.

Other people are also deciding on whether your race and ethnicity

هەووەها خەڵکانی دیکە لەسەر ڕەگەزتان و ڕەفتارتان بڕیار دەدەن

is enough to consider you a criminal,

ئەم شتانە بەسە بۆ ئەوەی خۆت وەک تاوانبار سەیر بکەی

or if your religion and nationality is enough to put you on a terrorist list.

یان ئەگەر ئاین و نەتەوەکەتان لە ناو لیستی تیرۆرستان بێت.

And if you still think you are a strong, independent human being

و ئەگەر هێشتا وا بیردەکەنەوە بەهێزن، بەپشت بەستن بە ئادەمیزاد

unaffected by politics,

لەلایەن سیاسەتەوە کاریتێنەکراوە،

then think twice.

کەوایە دووجار بیربکەوە.

I am speaking to you as a young woman from Libya,

من قسە بۆ ئێوە دەکەم وەک ژنێکی گەنج لە لیبیا،

a country that is in the middle of a civil war.

وڵاتێک کەوا لە ناوەراستی شەڕی ناوخۆیە.

After more than 40 years of authoritarian rule,

دوای زیاتر لە ٤٠ساڵ یاسای زوڵم و ستەم.

it's not a place where political engagement

ئەوە شوێنی ململانەی سیاسی نییە

by women and young people is possible, nor encouraged.

بۆ ژنان و کەسانی گەنج هیچ هاندانێک نییە.

Almost all political dialogues that took place in the past few years,

زۆربەی هەرە زۆری گفتوگۆ سیاسیەکان کەوا لە چەند ساڵی ڕابردوو شوێنیان گرتبوو،

even those gathered by foreign powers,

تەنانەت کۆبونەوەی زلهێزەکانیش،

has been with only middle-aged men in the room.

تەنها لەگەڵ پیاوە تەمەن مامناوەدەکان لە ژوورێک بووە.

But in places with a broken political system like Libya,

بەڵام لە شوێنیک سیستەمی سیاسی داتپەروەی وەک لیبیا،

or in seemingly functioning places, including international organizations,

یان لەو شوێنەی بەڕواڵەت چالاکی دەکەن، بە ڕێکخراوە نێودەوڵەتییەکانیشەوە،

the systems we have nowadays for political decision-making

سیستەمەکانی ئەوە ڕۆژگارە هەمانە بۆ بڕیاردانی سیاسی

are not from the people for the people,

لە خەڵکێکەوە بۆ خەڵکیکی دیکە نییە،

but they have been established by the few for the few.

بەڵام لەلایەن کەمینەوە دایانمەزراندوە.

And these few have been historically almost exclusively men,

و ئەو کەمینانەش لە ڕووی مێژووییەوە ڕێژەیەکی زۆر پیاوان لە خۆدەگرێت،

and they've produced laws, policies,

و یاساکان و ڕێساکان دادەنێن،

mechanisms for political participation that are based on the opinions,

میکانیزمی بەژداری سیاسی لە بیروباوەڕی ئەوان سەرچاوەی گرتووە

beliefs, worldviews, dreams,

باوەڕ، جیهان بینین، خەونەکان،

aspirations of this one group of people,

ئارەزوو و ویستی ئەم گروپە کەمینەیە

while everyone else was kept out.

لەکاتێکدا خەڵکانی دیکە پشت گوێ خراون.

After all, we've all heard some version of this sentence:

لە کۆتایدا، گۆێبیستی هەموو ئەو دەستەواژە نوێیانە بووین:

"What does a woman, let alone a young person, who is brown,

ژن چی لە سیاسەت دەزانێت؟

understand about politics?"

ئینجا گەر گەنج و ئەسمەر بێت؟"

When you're young --

کاتێک گەنجیت--

and in many parts of the world, a woman --

و لە زۆربەی بەشەکانی جیهان،--

you often hear experienced politicians say, "But you lack political experience."

زۆربەی جار سیاسەتمەدارەکان دەڵێن: ژن شارەزایی و کارامەیی سیاسیەت کەمە.

And when I hear that,

و کاتێک ئەوە دەبیستم،

I wonder what sort of experience are they referring to?

بیر لەوە دەکەمەوە کە باسی چ جۆرە شارەزاییەک دەکەن؟

The experience of corrupted political systems?

شارەزای سیستەمی سیاسییە گەندەڵەکەتان؟

Or of waging wars?

یان هەڵگیرساندنی شەڕەکانتان؟

Or are they referring to the experience

یان ئایا ئاماژەتان دەدا بۆ شارەزای

of putting the interests of economic profits

پێشخستنی قازانجە ئابورییەکان

before those of the environment?

بەر لە ژینگە؟

Because if this is political experience,

چونکە ئەگەر ئەوە شارەزایی سیاسی بیت.

then yes --

بەڵێ--

(Applause)

(چەپڵەرێزان)

we, as women and young people, have no political experience at all.

ئێمە، وەک ژنان و خەڵکی گەنج بەهیچ جۆرێک شارەزای سیاسیمان نییە.

Now, politicians might not be the only ones to blame,

ئێستا، لەوانەیە سیاسییەکان تاکە کەس نەبن سەرکۆنە بکرێن،

because ordinary people, and many young people as well,

چونکە خەڵکی ئاسایی، و هەروەها زۆربەی خەڵکی گەنج.

don't care about politics.

گرنگی نادەن بە سیاسەت.

And even those who care don't know how to participate.

و ئەوانەی گرنگی پێدەدەن نازانن چۆن بەشداری بکەن.

This must change, and here is my proposal.

ئەمە پێویستە بگۆڕدرێت، ئەوە پێشنیازەکەی منە.

We need to teach people at an early age

لە منداڵیەوە پێویستە خەڵک فێربکەین

about decision-making and how to be part of it.

دەربارەی بڕیاردان و چۆنیەتی بەشداریکردن.

Every family is its own mini political system

هەموو خانەوادەیەک خاوەنی سیستەمی سیاسی خۆیەتی

that is usually not democratic,

کەوا زۆربەی جار دیموکراسی نییە،

because parents make decisions that affect all members of the family,

چونکە بڕیاری باوان کاریگەری لەسەر گشت ئەندامانی خێزانەکە دەکات.

while the kids have very little to say.

لەکاتێکدا منداڵەکان شتێکی بچووکیان هەیە بۆ گوتن.

Similarly, politicians make decisions that affect the whole nation,

هەروەها، سیاسەتمەدارەکان بڕیاردەدەن کە کار دەکاتە لەسەر هەموو نەتەوەکە،

while the people have very little say in them.

لەکاتێکدا خەڵکەکە بۆچوونێکی کەمیان هەیە تێیدا.

We need to change this,

پێویستە ئەمە بگۆڕین،

and in order to achieve this change systematically,

بۆ بە سیستماتیگ گۆڕینی

we need to teach people

پێویستە خەڵک فێربکەین

that political, national and global affairs

کەوا سیاسەت، نەتەوە و ڕووداوەکانی جیهان

are as relevant to them as personal and family affairs.

هاوشێوەی بابەتەکانی وەک کەسایەتی و کاروبارەکانی خێزانە.

So if we want to achieve this, my proposal and advice is,

ئەگەر بمانەوێت ئەوە بەدەست بهێنین، پیشنیاز و ئامۆژگارییەکەم ئەمەیە

try out the Family Democracy Meeting system.

هەوڵبدەن سیستەمی کۆبوونەوەی دیموکراسی خێزان بنیات بنێن.

Because that will enable your kids to exercise their agency

چونکە ئەوە توانا بە منداڵەکانتان دەدات بۆ ڕاهێنانی ووزەکانیان

and decision-making from a very early age.

و بڕیاردان لە تەمەنێکی زۆر زوو.

Politics is about having conversations,

سیاسەت دەربارەی هەبوونی گفتوگۆیە،

including difficult conversations,

گفتوگۆ نارحەتەکانیش لە خۆدەگرێت،

that lead to decisions.

کەوا ڕێنوێنی دەکات بۆ بڕیاردان.

And in order to have a conversation, you need to participate,

و بۆ ئەوەی گفتوگۆ هەبێت پێویستە بەشداری بکەیت،

not sign off like I did when I was a kid

نەک بایکۆت کردن وەک من کاتێک منداڵبووم

and then learn the lesson the hard way and have to go back again.

و پاشان فێربووم بەڕێگەی سەخت و پێویست دوابارە بگەڕێمەوە لایان.

If you include your kids in family conversations,

ئەگەر منداڵەکانتان لە گفتوگۆی خێزانی بەشداری پێبکەن،

they will grow up

ئەوان گەورە دەبن

and know how to participate in political conversations.

و دەزانن چۆن بەژداری بکەن لە گفتوگۆ سیاسیەکان.

And most importantly, most importantly,

و گرنگترین، گرنگترین.

they will help others engage.

یارمەتی ئەوانی دیکە دەدەن بەشداری بکەن.
