Paul Bloom: Can prejudice ever be a good thing?

When we think about prejudice and bias,

we tend to think about stupid and evil people

And this idea is nicely summarized

by the British critic William Hazlitt,

I want to try to convince you here

that this is mistaken.

I want to try to convince you

that prejudice and bias

are natural, they're often rational,

and they're often even moral,

and I think that once we understand this,

we're in a better position to make sense of them

So, start with stereotypes. You look at me,

you know my name, you know certain facts about me,

and you could make certain judgments.

You could make guesses about my ethnicity,

my political affiliation, my religious beliefs.

And the thing is, these judgments tend to be accurate.

و نکته اینجاست که این قضاوت ها در بیشتر موارد درست از آب در میان.

We're very good at this sort of thing.

ما تو این جور کارا خبره ایم.

And we're very good at this sort of thing

و تو این جور کارا خبره ایم

because our ability to stereotype people

is not some sort of arbitrary quirk of the mind,

but rather it's a specific instance

of a more general process,

which is that we have experience

with things and people in the world

and we can use our experience to make generalizations

So everybody here has a lot of experience

with chairs and apples and dogs,

and based on this, you could see

unfamiliar examples and you could guess,

you could sit on the chair,

you could eat the apple, the dog will bark.

Now we might be wrong.

The chair could collapse if you sit on it,

the apple might be poison, the dog might not bark,

and in fact, this is my dog Tessie, who doesn't bark.

But for the most part, we're good at this.

For the most part, we make good guesses

در بیشتر موارد حدسهامون

both in the social domain and the non-social domain,

and if we weren't able to do so,

if we weren't able to make guesses about new instances that we encounter,

And in fact, Hazlitt later on in his wonderful essay

Now sometimes, we break the world up into

us versus them, into in-group versus out-group,

and sometimes when we do this,

we know we're doing something wrong,

But other times we're proud of it.

And my favorite example of this

agreed with the premise of her question,

which is as Americans, we should care more

about Americans than about other people.

And in fact, in general, people are often swayed

Now some of you may reject this.

Some of you may be so cosmopolitan

that you think that ethnicity and nationality

should hold no moral sway.

But even you sophisticates accept

that there should be some pull

towards the in-group in the domain of friends and family,

and so even you make a distinction

between us versus them.

Now, this distinction is natural enough

and often moral enough, but it can go awry,

and this was part of the research

He was captured and ended up

and it was a terrifying time for him,

because if it was discovered that he was a Jew,

he could have been moved to a concentration camp,

where he most likely would not have survived.

And in fact, when the war ended and he was released,

most of his friends and family were dead.

He got involved in different pursuits.

on stereotypes opened up, he applied for it,

And what started his career is an insight

that the way most people were thinking

about the Holocaust was wrong.

Many people, most people at the time,

viewed the Holocaust as sort of representing

some tragic flaw on the part of the Germans,

some genetic taint, some authoritarian personality.

And Tajfel rejected this.

Tajfel said what we see in the Holocaust

is just an exaggeration

of normal psychological processes

that exist in every one of us.

And to explore this, he did a series of classic studies

with British adolescents.

And in one of his studies, what he did was he asked

the British adolescents all sorts of questions,

It was entirely bogus.

They probably hadn't heard of the artists.

He just arbitrarily divided them up.

But what he found was, these categories mattered,

so when he later gave the subjects money,

they would prefer to give the money

Worse, they were actually most interested

so they would give up money for their own group

This bias seems to show up very early.

So my colleague and wife, Karen Wynn, at Yale

has done a series of studies with babies

where she exposes babies to puppets,

and the puppets have certain food preferences.

So one of the puppets might like green beans.

The other puppet might like graham crackers.

They test the babies own food preferences,

and babies typically prefer the graham crackers.

و بچه ها بطور معمول بیسکویت گندمی رو ترجیح می دن.

But the question is, does this matter to babies

in how they treat the puppets? And it matters a lot.

They tend to prefer the puppet

who has the same food tastes that they have,

and worse, they actually prefer puppets

who punish the puppet with the different food taste.

We see this sort of in-group, out-group psychology all the time.

We see it in political clashes

within groups with different ideologies.

We see it in its extreme in cases of war,

where the out-group isn't merely given less,

but dehumanized,

as in the Nazi perspective of Jews

Stereotypes can also go awry.

So often they're rational and useful,

they give the wrong answers,

And the case that's been most studied

is the case of race.

There was a fascinating study

prior to the 2008 election

where social psychologists looked at the extent

to which the candidates were associated with America,

as in an unconscious association with the American flag.

And in one of their studies they compared

Obama and McCain, and they found McCain

is thought of as more American than Obama,

and to some extent, people aren't that surprised by hearing that.

McCain is a celebrated war hero,

and many people would explicitly say

But they also compared Obama

These stereotypes and biases

have real-world consequences,

both subtle and very important.

In one recent study, researchers

put ads on eBay for the sale of baseball cards.

Some of them were held by white hands,

In research done at Stanford,

psychologists explored the case of people

sentenced for the murder of a white person.

It turns out, holding everything else constant,

you are considerably more likely to be executed

if you look like the man on the right

and this is in large part because

So now that we know about this,

how do we combat it?

And there are different avenues.

One avenue is to appeal

to people's emotional responses,

to appeal to people's empathy,

and we often do that through stories.

So if you are a liberal parent

and you want to encourage your children

to believe in the merits of nontraditional families,

If you are conservative and have a different attitude,

But in general, stories can turn

anonymous strangers into people who matter,

and the idea that we care about people

when we focus on them as individuals

is an idea which has shown up across history.

So Stalin apocryphally said,

"A single death is a tragedy,

Psychologists have explored this.

For instance, in one study,

people were given a list of facts about a crisis,

The story, perhaps apocryphal,

"Uncle Tom's Cabin" is not a great book of philosophy

"کلبه ی عمو تام" یه کتاب بزرگ فلسفی

or of theology or perhaps not even literature,

یا دینی یا حتی ادبی هم نیست،

but it does a great job

اما اهمیتش در اینه که

of getting people to put themselves in the shoes

باعث می شه مردم خودشونو جای دیگرانی بذارن

of people they wouldn't otherwise be in the shoes of,

که در شرایط عادی حتی تصورش رو هم نمی تونن بکنن،

put themselves in the shoes of slaves.

یعنی خودشون رو جای برده ها بذارن.

And that could well have been a catalyst

و چه بسا یه همچین دیدگاهی

for great social change.

می تونسته تسریع کننده ی تحولات اجتماعی بزرگ باشه.

More recently, looking at America

با نگاهی به آمریکا

in the last several decades,

در چند دهه ی اخیر هم

there's some reason to believe that shows like "The Cosby Show"

می شه به این باور رسید که نمایش هایی مثل "نمایش بیل کازبی"

radically changed American attitudes towards African-Americans,

دید آمریکایی ها نسبت به آمریکایی های آفریقایی تبار رو دگرگون کردن،

while shows like "Will and Grace" and "Modern Family"

در حالیکه نمایش هایی مانند "ویل و گریس" و "خانواده ی امروزی"

changed American attitudes

نگاه آمریکایی ها رو

towards gay men and women.

نسبت به مردان و زنان همجنس گرا تغییر دادن.

I don't think it's an exaggeration to say

پر بیراه نیست اگه بگیم

that the major catalyst in America for moral change

مهم ترین تسهیل کننده ی تحول اخلاقی در آمریکا

has been a situation comedy.

همین کمدی ها هستن.

But it's not all emotions,

اما همش هم احساسات نیست.

and I want to end by appealing

می خوام سخنم رو با توسل به

to the power of reason.

قدرت منطق پایان بدم.

At some point in his wonderful book

استیون پینکر

"The Better Angels of Our Nature,"

یه جا در کتاب شگفت انگیزش،

Steven Pinker says,

"فرشته های بهتر طبیعت ما" میگه

the Old Testament says love thy neighbor,

عهد عتیق می گه همسایه ات را دوست بدار،

and the New Testament says love thy enemy,

و عهد جدید می گه دشمنت را دوست بدار،

but I don't love either one of them, not really,

اما من هیچ یک از این دو رو دوست ندارم،

but I don't want to kill them.

اما به مرگشون هم راضی نیستم.

I know I have obligations to them,

می دونم وظایفی نسبت بهشون دارم،

but my moral feelings to them, my moral beliefs

اما احساس اخلاقیم نسبت به اونا و عقاید اخلاقیم

about how I should behave towards them,

درباره رفتارم باهاشون،

aren't grounded in love.

از عشق سرچشمه نمی گیره.

What they're grounded in is the understanding of human rights,

بلکه براساس درکیه که از حقوق بشر دارم،

a belief that their life is as valuable to them

باور به اینکه زندگی به همون اندازه برای اونا ارزشمنده

as my life is to me,

که برای من،

and to support this, he tells a story

و برای تایید این، داستانی

by the great philosopher Adam Smith,

از فیلسوف بزرگ، آدام اسمیت، میاره

and I want to tell this story too,

و من هم می خوام این داستان رو به شما بگم

though I'm going to modify it a little bit

البته با اندکی تغییر

for modern times.

برای سازگاری با دنیای امروز.

So Adam Smith starts by asking you to imagine

آدام اسمیت ازتون می خواد

the death of thousands of people,

مرگ هزارن نفر رو تصور کنید

and imagine that the thousands of people

در کشوری

are in a country you are not familiar with.

که اصلا باهاش آشنایی ندارید.

It could be China or India or a country in Africa.

مثلا چین یا هند یا یه کشور تو آفریقا.

And Smith says, how would you respond?

و اسمیت ازتون می پرسه واکنشتون چیه؟

And you would say, well that's too bad,

و شما می پاسخ می دید، خوب این خیلی بده

and you'd go on to the rest of your life.

و می رید دنبال زندگیتون.

If you were to open up The New York Times online or something,

اگه روزنامه ی نیویورک تایمز آنلاین یا هر روزنامه ی دیگه ای رو ورق بزنید

and discover this, and in fact this happens to us all the time,

می بینید که چنین اتفاقایی همیشه میفتن

we go about our lives.

و ما هم از کنارشون بی خیال می گذریم.

But imagine instead, Smith says,

اسمیت می گه، حالا تصور کنید

you were to learn that tomorrow

که بهتون خبر برسه که فردا

you were to have your little finger chopped off.

انگشت کوچیکتون قطع خواهد شد.

Smith says, that would matter a lot.

به باور اسمیت، یه همچین خبری تاثیر بسزایی داره.

You would not sleep that night

شب خوابتون نمی بره

wondering about that.

و همش به این موضوع فکر می کنید.

So this raises the question:

پس پرسش اینه که

Would you sacrifice thousands of lives

آیا حاضرید هزاران نفر رو

to save your little finger?

فدای انگشت کوچیکتون کنید؟

Now answer this in the privacy of your own head,

لازم نیست پاسخ خودتون رو بلند بگید

but Smith says, absolutely not,

اما پاسخ اسمیت اینه: هرگز نه،

what a horrid thought.

چه فکر پلیدی.

And so this raises the question,

پس پرسشی که

and so, as Smith puts it,

اسمیت مطرح می کنه اینه که

"When our passive feelings are almost always

"وقتی احساسات بالقوه ی ما تقریبا همیشه

so sordid and so selfish,

اینقدر دون و خودخواهانه هستند،

how comes it that our active principles

چگونه است که اصول بالفعلمان همواره

should often be so generous and so noble?"

اینقدر بلندنظرانه و شرافتمندانه اند؟"

And Smith's answer is, "It is reason,

و اسمیت پاسخ می ده "بخاطر وجود منطق،

principle, conscience.

اصول و وجدان.

[This] calls to us,

این ندایی است

with a voice capable of astonishing the most presumptuous of our passions,

که متکبرانه ترین احساسات در اعماق وجود ما رو خطاب قرار می ده

that we are but one of the multitude,

که ما عضوی هستیم از جمعیتی بیشمار

in no respect better than any other in it."

و به هیچ وجه بر دیگر اعضا برتری نداریم."

And this last part is what is often described

و این بخش آخر همونیه که اغلب ازش

as the principle of impartiality.

بعنوان اصل بی طرفی یاد می شه.

And this principle of impartiality manifests itself

و این اصل بی طرفی

in all of the world's religions,

در همه ی ادیان دنیا،

in all of the different versions of the golden rule,

در همه ی نسخه های گوناگون قانون طلایی،

and in all of the world's moral philosophies,

و در همه ی فلسفه های اخلاقی دنیا وجود داره،

which differ in many ways

که گرچه با هم متفاوتند

but share the presupposition that we should judge morality

اما همه در این اصل مشترکند که باید اخلاق رو

from sort of an impartial point of view.

با دیدی بی طرفانه قضاوت کرد.

The best articulation of this view

به عقیده ی من چنین دیدگاهی به بهترین وجه

is actually, for me, it's not from a theologian or from a philosopher,

نه وسیله ی یه دین شناس یا فیلسوف،

but from Humphrey Bogart

بلکه وسیله ی همفری بوگارت

at the end of "Casablanca."

در پایان فیلم "کازابلانکا" بیان شده.

So, spoiler alert, he's telling his lover

ببخشید اگه فیلم رو ندیدید، به عشقش میگه

that they have to separate

که باید برای مصالحی کلی تر

for the more general good,

از هم جدا شن.

and he says to her, and I won't do the accent,

بهش می گه، نمی تونم لهجه اش رو تقلید کنم،

but he says to her, "It doesn't take much to see

اما بهش می گه "پی بردن به این که

that the problems of three little people

مشکلات سه تا آدم ناچیز حتی به بزرگی یه مشت لوبیا هم

don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world."

تو این دنیای دیوونه نیست، کار دشواری نیست."

Our reason could cause us to override our passions.

منطق می تونه بر احساس برتری بیابه.

Our reason could motivate us

منطق می تونه انگیزه شه

to extend our empathy,

که همدلیمون رو به انسان های بیشتری گسترش بدیم،

could motivate us to write a book like "Uncle Tom's Cabin,"

می تونه انگیزه شه کتابی مثل "کلبه ی عمو تام" بنویسیم

or read a book like "Uncle Tom's Cabin,"

یا بخونیم،

and our reason can motivate us to create

و می تونه باعث شه

customs and taboos and laws

سنت ها و خط قرمزها و قوانینی خلق کنیم

that will constrain us

که ما رو از

from acting upon our impulses

قضاوت زود هنگام

when, as rational beings, we feel

و تصمیم گیری های عجولانه

we should be constrained.

باز دارن.

This is what a constitution is.

این قانون اساسیه.

A constitution is something which was set up in the past

قانون اساسی چیزیه که در گذشته نوشته شده

that applies now in the present,

و امروز به اجرا در میاد،

and what it says is,

و چیزی که می گه اینه که

no matter how much we might to reelect

هر چقدر هم که دلمون بخواد

a popular president for a third term,

یه رییس جمهور محبوب رو برای بار سوم انتخاب کنیم،

no matter how much white Americans might choose

هر چقدر هم که آمریکایی های سفید پوست

to feel that they want to reinstate the institution of slavery, we can't.

ممکنه تمایل به بازگرداندن برده داریداشته باشن، غیر ممکنه، نمی تونیم.

We have bound ourselves.

ما خودمون رو محدود کردیم.

And we bind ourselves in other ways as well.

و در کارهای دیگه هم خودمون رو محدود می کنیم.

We know that when it comes to choosing somebody

می دونیم که وقتی نوبت انتخاب کسی

for a job, for an award,

به شغلی، یا برای دریافت جایزه ای می رسه،

we are strongly biased by their race,

جانبداری شدیدی به نژاد خاصی داریم،

we are biased by their gender,

یا به جنسیت،

we are biased by how attractive they are,

یا اینکه چقدر طرف جذابیت داره،

and sometimes we might say, "Well fine, that's the way it should be."

و بعضی وقتا هم می گیم "خوب، همینه که هست."

But other times we say, "This is wrong."

اما بعضی وقتا هم می گیم "این دیدگاه اشتباه هست."

And so to combat this,

بنابراین، برای مبارزه با چنین دیدگاهی،

we don't just try harder,

ما تنها به تلاش بسنده نمی کنیم

but rather what we do is we set up situations

بلکه شرایطی رو فراهم می کنیم

where these other sources of information can't bias us,

که اون منابع اطلاعاتی متفرقه تاثیری رومون نذارن.

which is why many orchestras

به همین دلیله که اکثر ارکسترها

audition musicians behind screens,

so the only information they have

تا تنها اطلاعاتی که اهمیت داره

is the information they believe should matter.

I think prejudice and bias

به نظر من، تعصب و جانبداری

illustrate a fundamental duality of human nature.

یه نوع دوگانگی بنیادی طبیعت آدمی رو نشون می دن.

We have gut feelings, instincts, emotions,

ما دارای شم درونی، غرایز و احساسات هستیم

and they affect our judgments and our actions

و اینها قضاوت و عملکرد ما رو در جهت خوب یا بد

for good and for evil,

تحت تاثیر قرار می دن،

but we are also capable of rational deliberation

اما از اونطرف از قدرت اندیشیدن منطقی

and intelligent planning,

و برنامه ریزی هوشمندانه هم برخورداریم،

and we can use these to, in some cases,

و می تونیم در برخی موارد از اینها

accelerate and nourish our emotions,

برای تغذیه و تشدید

and in other cases staunch them.

و در موارد دیگر، برای متوقف کردن احساسات بهره بریم.

And it's in this way

و از این راهه

that reason helps us create a better world.

که منطق بهمون کمک می کنه دنیای بهتری بسازیم.
