Education really hasn't changed

Now, we've all heard of distance education,

So at edX and a number of other organizations,

So today, I want to discuss a different aspect,

So we had a real issue with communicating,

and we were just not communicating,

until one day I had this epiphany.

Let's not fight it. Let's embrace it.

Then they come into the classroom

In fact, with edX, when we were teaching our first course

Two high school teachers

And the only way we discovered this

and we happened to stumble upon that blog.

We were also doing other pilots.

You'll hear that a lot. That course has become

And this is a form of learning

and really promoted by a very early paper, in 1972,

Let me tell you a story.

How do you do that for 150,000?

So one night I'm sitting up there, at 2 a.m. at night,

وفي احدى الليالي، كنت مستقيظاً حينها الساعة 2 صباحاً.

and I think there's this question

وكنت افكر عن سؤال

from a student from Pakistan,

من أحد الطلبة من باكستان،

and he asked a question, and I said,

هو سأل السوال، وأجبت

okay, let me go and type up an answer,

حسناً، دعني أذهب لأكتب الجواب.

I don't type all that fast,

وأنا لا استطيع الكتابة سريعاً

and I begin typing up the answer,

وبدأت بكتابة الجواب

and before I can finish,

وقبل انتهائي من ذلك،

another student from Egypt popped in with an answer,

طالب آخر من مصر، ظهر فجاءة ومعه الجواب.

not quite right, so I'm fixing the answer,

لم يكن صحيحا تماماً ولكني بدأت بتصحيح إجابته،

and before I can finish, a student from the U.S.

وقبل ان اكمل ذلك، طالب من الولايات المتحدة

had popped in with a different answer.

ظهر فجاءة بجواب مختلف.

And then I sat back, fascinated.

وحينها توقفت قليلاً، مذهولا.

Boom, boom, boom, boom, the students were

بووم ، بووم، بووم ، الطلاب كانوا

discussing and interacting with each other,

يتناقشون ويتفاعلون فيما بينهم،

and by 4 a.m. that night, I'm totally fascinated,

وعند الساعه 4 فجرا، تلك الليلة، كنت مذهولاً،

having this epiphany,

مدركاً ذلك

and by 4 a.m. in the morning,

وبتلك الساعه في 4 فجراً،

they had discovered the right answer.

استطاعوا إيجاد الحل الصحيح.

And all I had to do was go and bless it,

وكل ما وجب فعله هو تقدير ذلك واعتماده.

"Good answer."

"جواب جيد"

So this is absolutely amazing,

حقاً كان ذلك مذهلاً،

where students are learning from each other,

حين يتعلم الطلاب من بعضهم البعض،

and they're telling us that they are learning

وحين يخبروننا انهم يتعلمون ايضاً

by teaching.

من خلال التدريس.

Now this is all not just in the future.

ذلك ليس تماماً في المستقبل.

This is happening today.

ذلك يحدث الآن.

So we are applying these blended learning pilots

فنحن نقوم بتطبيق تلك الأساليب المدمجة للتعليم

in a number of universities and high schools around the world,

from Tsinghua in China

to the National University of Mongolia in Mongolia

And these kinds of technologies really help,

It can also solve a practical problem of MOOCs,

We have to move from bricks-and-mortar school buildings

يجب ان ننتقل من المباني الدراسية الحجرية

to digital dormitories.

But I think at the end of the day,

ولكن أعتقد بنهاية اليوم،

I think we will still need one lecture hall

مازلنا بحاجه الى قاعة دراسية واحدة

in our universities.

في جامعاتنا.

Otherwise, how else do we tell our grandchildren

والا حينها، كيف نخبر أحفادنا

that your grandparents sat in that room

انه أجدادهم جلسوا هنا في هذه الغرفة

in neat little rows like cornstalks

في ممرات ضيقة كسيقان الذرة

and watched this professor at the end

وهم يتابعون الأستاذ الى النهاية

talk about content and, you know,
