Indeed, many hackers do not resist

By getting into people's files like that,

Unfortunately, due to some miscommunications,

Well, hackers in the back row replied,

Indeed, for years,

hackers have been on the wrong side of the fence,

but in light of what we know now,

who is more watchful of our online world?

The rules of the game are not that clear anymore,

فقواعد اللعبة باتت غير واضحة،

but hackers are perhaps the only ones

ولكن ربما يكون المخترقون هم الوحيدون

still capable of challenging overreaching governments

القادرين على الوقوف ضد التجاوزات الحكومية

and data-hoarding corporates

والمؤسسات المحتكرة للبيانات

on their own playing field.

To me, that represents hope.

وبالنسبة لي هذا يمثل الأمل.

For the past three decades,

ففي العقود الثلاثة الأخيرة،

hackers have done a lot of things,

قام المخترقون بالعديد من الأمور،

but they have also impacted civil liberties,

ولكنهم أيضا أثروا في الحريات المدنية،

innovation and Internet freedom,

so I think it's time we take a good look

at how we choose to portray them,

because if we keep expecting them to be the bad guys,

how can they be the heroes too?

My years in the hacker world

وقد جعلتني السنوات التي أمضيتها

have made me realize

بعالم الإختراق أدرك

both the problem and the beauty about hackers:

الجانب القبيح والجميل في المخترقين:

They just can't see something broken in the world

إنهم لا يستطيعون رؤية شيء مكسور في العالم

and leave it be.

ويتركونه كذلك.

They are compelled

إنهم يشعرون بأنهم مجبرين

to either exploit it or try and change it,

إما على استغلاله أو محاولة إصلاحه،

and so they find the vulnerable aspects

وهكذا يكتشفون مناطق الضعف

in our rapidly changing world.

في عالمنا المتغير بسرعة.

They make us, they force us to fix things

إنهم يحثوننا و يجبروننا على إصلاح الأشياء

or demand something better,

أو المطالبة بشيء أفضل،

and I think we need them

وأعتقد أننا بحاجة إليهم

to do just that,

للقيام بذلك فقط،

because after all, it is not information

لأنه في نهاية الأمر ليست المعلومات

that wants to be free, it's us.
