There's this fact that I love that I read somewhere once,

I was a lonely kid.

I didn't have an easy time finding friends to play with,

It began with ice cream.

There was a Baskin-Robbins in my hometown,

I was trying to figure out what I could do with this exotic material --

I started turning it over in my head, and I realized, "Wait a minute --

Yeah, I cut a hole out,

I needed a place to wear the space helmet,

I cut a hole for a radar screen

and this is where I thought I was being really clever --

without permission, I painted the back wall of the closet black

And I loved it.

It was the armor.

The armor in "Excalibur" was intoxicatingly beautiful to me.

These were literally knights in shining, mirror-polished armor.

So I went back to my favorite material,

Now, this is only the first suit of armor I made

A couple of years later,

I convinced my dad to embark on making me a proper suit of armor.

This is the first thing I didn't anticipate.

I'm wearing a suit of armor! I am having the time of my --"

And I'm just about to tell her how great I feel,

when the classroom starts to list to the left

and then I woke up in the nurse's office.

I had passed out from heat exhaustion,

OK, fast-forward a whole bunch of years,

The episode was going to have two distinct parts to it.

One was where we get trained to jump off buildings by a stuntman

into an air bag.

And the second was the graduation to the experiment:

I wanted to visually separate these two elements,

Five years into the "MythBusters" run,

I'd known about Comic-Con for years and never had time to go.

This was the big leagues -- this was costuming mecca.

to show their amazing creations on the floor in San Diego.

I decided that I would put together an elaborate costume

Sweating! I should've remembered this.

I'm sweating buckets and the contact lenses hurt my eyes,

and none of it matters because I'm totally in love.

Not just with the process of putting on this costume and walking the floor,

It's not called costuming at Cons,

Now ostensibly, cosplay means people who dress up

you don't just take pictures of people walking around.

You go up and say,

This is a masterpiece, and one of my all-time favorite films.

It's about a young girl named Chihiro who gets lost in the spirit world

And she finds her way back out again

ثم تجد طريق العودة مجدداً

with the help of a couple of friends she makes --

بمساعدة اثنين من الأصدقاء الذين اختلقتهم

a captured dragon named Haku

وهم تنين حبيس اسمه (هاكو)

and a lonely demon named No-Face.

وشيطان وحيد اسمه (عديم الوجه).

No-Face is lonely and he wants to make friends,

(عديم الوجه) وحيد ويودُّ التعرف على أصدقاء،

and he thinks the way to do it is by luring them to him

ويعتقد أن السبيل لتحقيق ذلك عن طريق إعرائهم واستدراجهم إليه

and producing gold in his hand.

وإنتاج الذهب في يده.

But this doesn't go very well,

ولكن هذا الأمر لم يفلح،

and so he ends up going on kind of a rampage

فانتهى به المطاف بأن أصبحت تعتليه نوبات من الهياج

until Chihiro saves him,

حتى حررته تشهيرو،

rescues him.

وأنقذته.

So I put together a No-Face costume,

لذلك جمعت زي شخصية (عديم الوجه)،

and I wore it on the floor at Comic-Con.

وارتديته على أرضية تجمع الكوميديا.

And I very carefully practiced No-Face's gestures.

ولقد تدربت بحرص شديد على ايماءات (عديم الوجه).

I resolved I would not speak in this costume at all.

كنت مصمماً على أن لا أتحدث مطلقاً في هذا الزي.

When people asked to take my picture,

عندما طلب الناس أخذ صورة معي،

I would nod

كنتُ أومىء

and I would shyly stand next to them.

وأقف خَجِلاً بجانبهم.

They would take the picture

يأخذون الصورة

and then I would secret out from behind my robe

ثم أخرجُ بخفة من وراء ردائي

a chocolate gold coin.

قعطة شوكولاطة نقدية مغلفة ذهبيًا.

And at the end of the photo process, I'd make it appear for them.

وعند انتهاء التقاط الصورة، أظهرها لهم.

Ah, ah ah! -- like that.

أه، أه أه! هكذا.

And people were freaking out.

وقد كان الناس يرتعشون خوفًا.

"Holy crap! Gold from No-Face! Oh my god, this is so cool!"

"ياللعجب! ذهب من (عديم الوجه)! يا إلهي، هذا شيء رائع!"

And I'm feeling and I'm walking the floor and it's fantastic.

كنت أشعر بالأمروأتجول في أرضية التجمع وكان ذلك شيئاً رائعاً.

And about 15 minutes in something happens.

وبعد 15 دقيقة حدث شيء ما.

Somebody grabs my hand,

جذب أحدهم يدي،

and they put a coin back into it.

وردَّ القطعة النقدية في يدي.

And I think maybe they're giving me a coin as a return gift,

وفكرت حينها أنه يعطيني لها على سبيل رد الهدية،

but no, this is one of the coins that I'd given away.

ولكن لا، كانت تلك إحدى القطع النقدية التي أهديتها.

I don't know why.

لم أعرفُ لماذا.

And I keep on going, I take some more pictures.

ثم واصلت، والتقطت مزيداً من الصور.

And then it happens again.

ثم تكرر الأمر مجدداً.

Understand, I can't see anything inside this costume.

فهمت الآن، لم أكن أستطع رؤية شيء من داخل هذا الزي.

I can see through the mouth --

أستطيع أن أرى من خلال فتحة الفم

I can see people's shoes.

أستطيع رؤية أحذية الناس.

I can hear what they're saying and I can see their feet.

أستطيع أن أسمع ما يقولونه وأستطيع أن أرى أقدامهم.

ولكن في المرة الثالثة عندما أعاد لي أحدهم القطعة النقدية،

But the third time someone gives me back a coin,

I want to know what's going on.

أردت أن أعرف ما يحدث.

So I sort of tilt my head back to get a better view,

لذلك أملتُ رأسي إلى الوراء قليلاً لأحظى برؤية أفضل،

and what I see is someone walking away from me going like this.

وما رأيته كان شخصاً ما يبتعد عني هكذا.

And then it hits me:

وحينها صدمني الأمر:

it's bad luck to take gold from No-Face.

يعتبرُ أخذ الذهب من (عديم الوجه) فالاً وحظًا سيئًا.

In the film "Spirited Away,"

في فيلم (المخطوفة)،

bad luck befalls those who take gold from No-Face.

يحدثُ الحظ السيء لأولئك الذين يأخذون الذهب من (عديم الوجه ).

This isn't a performer-audience relationship; this is cosplay.

هذه ليست علاقة بين المؤدي والمشاهد، هذا هو عرض الأزياء التنكرية.

We are, all of us on that floor,

نحن جميعاً في أرضية التجمع،

injecting ourselves into a narrative that meant something to us.

وضعنا أنفسنا في حكاية قصصية كانت تعني لنا شيئاً.

And we're making it our own.

وكنا نؤديها بطريقتنا الخاصة.

We're connecting with something important inside of us.

نحن على اتصال بشيء مهم في داخلنا.

And the costumes are how we reveal ourselves

والأزياء هي الطريقة التي نكشف بها عن أنفسنا

to each other.

لبعضنا الآخر.
