One year ago, I rented a car in Jerusalem

Was it evidence of guilt, an assertion

ام كان ذلك دليلاً على الشعور بالذنب ؟ ام تأكيداً

that he should have been put away longer?

كان عليه تناسيه منذ وقت طويل ؟

He'd served six months in prison, lost his truck license for a decade.

لقد قضى مدة ستة أشهر في السجن، خسر رخصة شاحنته لعشر سنين.

I forgot my discretion.

حينها نسيت تكتمي عن الموضوع

"Um, Abed," I said,

وقلت له: عابد ...

"I thought you had a few driving issues before the crash."

إعتقدت أنه كان لديك بعض مشاكل القيادة قبل الحادث

"Well," he said, "I once went 60 in a 40."

قال: في إحدى المرات قدت بسرعة (60) في منطقة مسموح القيادة فبها بسرعة (40).

And so 27 violations --

أي أن الإنتهاكات الـ 27 مثل

driving through a red light, driving at excessive speed,

تخطي الإشارة الحمراء ، القيادة بسرعة مفرطة

driving on the wrong side of a barrier,

القيادة على الجانب الخطأ من الحاجز

and finally, riding his brakes down that hill --

وأخيراً القيادة أسفل ذلك التل بتهور

reduced to one.

جميعها خفضت إلى مخالفة واحدة.

And it was then I understood that no matter how stark the reality,

حينها فهمت أنه بغض النظر عن صراحة الواقع

the human being fits it into a narrative that is palatable.

أن الإنسان ينسجم مع القصة التي تريح ضميره.

The goat becomes the hero. The perpetrator becomes the victim.

It was then I understood that Abed would never apologize.

حينها فهمت أن عابد لن يعتذر أبداً

Abed and I sat with our coffee.

جلست انا و عابد نحتسي القهوة.

We'd spent 90 minutes together,

and he was now known to me.

و بالتالي صار مكشوفاً لدي.

He was not a particularly bad man

or a particularly good man.

He was a limited man

who'd found it within himself to be kind to me.

But it was hard for me to relate to one who had

for people are wrong to marvel

I wished to tell him that what makes most of us who we are

the aging and the anxious and the divorced and the balding

I wished to tell him that one does not have to say

تمنيت أن أقول له: أن المرء لا يحتاج أن يقول

that a bad thing is good,

بأن المصيبة هي شئ جيد

that a crash is from God and so a crash is good,

أن الحادث من الله ، أذاً الحادث خير

a broken neck is good.

الرقبة المكسورة خير.

One can say that a bad thing sucks,

المرء يمكن يقول انا المصائب شئ لعين

but that this natural world still has many glories.

و لكن هذا العالم الطبيعي لا يزال لديه الكثير من الأمجاد.

I wished to tell him that, in the end, our mandate is clear:

تمنيت أن أقول له أنه في نهاية المطاف مهمتنا واضحة:

We have to rise above bad fortune.

علينا أن نترفّع عن الحظ السئ

We have to be in the good and enjoy the good,

وعلينا أن نكون في الخير و نتمتع بالخير

study and work and adventure and friendship -- oh, friendship --

But most of all, I wished to tell him

ولكن الأهم من ذلك كله، وددت أن أقول له

what Herman Melville wrote,

that "truly to enjoy bodily warmth,

"لتستمتع حقاً بدفء الجسد

some small part of you must be cold,

يجب أن تكون بعض الأجزاء الصغيرة باردة

for there is no quality in this world

لأنه ليس هناك أي جودة في هذا العالم

that is not what it is merely by contrast."

Yes, contrast.

If you are mindful of what you do not have,

When one morning, years after the crash,

I stepped onto stone and the underside of my left foot

it was exhilarating, a gust of snow.

كان أمراً منعشاً مثل تساقط الثلج.

But I didn't say these things to Abed.

و لكن لم أقل هذه الأشياء لعابد.

I told him only that he had killed one man, not two.

فقط قلت له أنه قد قتل رجل واحداً و ليس إثنين.

I told him the name of that man.

قلت له إسم ذلك الرجل.

And then I said, "Goodbye."

و من ثم قلت له: "وداعا."
