One year ago, I rented a car in Jerusalem

We looked up at the wreckage.

우리는 사고 잔해를 바라 보았습니다.

"Strange," I said.

"어색하군요", 제가 말했습니다.

"Strange," he agreed.

"어색하네요", 그가 동의했습니다.

I had the thought that there, on Route 804,

저는 804번 고속도로에서

there were perpetrators and victims,

사고에 의해 묶여진 가해자와 피해자가

dyads bound by a crash.

있다고 생각했습니다.

Some, as had Abed, would forget the date.

어떤 이는 아베드처럼 날짜를 기억하지 못할 것이고,

Some, as had I, would remember.

그 어떤 이는 저처럼 기억할 것입니다.

The report finished and Abed spoke.

방송이 끝나고 아벳이 말하기를,

"It is a pity," he said, "that the police

in this country are not tough enough on bad drivers."

I was baffled.

reduced to one.

And it was then I understood that no matter how stark the reality,

그 때 저는 사실이 아무리 확실할지라도

the human being fits it into a narrative that is palatable.

인간은 그것을 자신에게 유리하게 맞추어 버린다는 것을 알았습니다.

The goat becomes the hero. The perpetrator becomes the victim.

It was then I understood that Abed would never apologize.

Abed and I sat with our coffee.

I wished to tell him that, were he to acknowledge my disability,

for people are wrong to marvel

미소짓는 저와 같은 이들에게

at those like me who smile as we limp.

놀라워하는 사람들이 이상한거라고, 괜찮다고 말하고 싶었습니다.

People don't know that they have lived through worse,

사람들은 과속 트럭 충돌의 충격보다

that problems of the heart hit with a force greater than a runaway truck,

마음에 상처를 주는 일이 더 아프고,

that problems of the mind are greater still,

백여 조각으로 부서진 목보다

more injurious, than a hundred broken necks.

마음의 상처가 더 크다는 것을 모릅니다.

I wished to tell him that what makes most of us who we are

그에게 무엇이 우리를 지금의 우리로 만드는 지를

most of all

is not our minds and not our bodies

무엇보다 우리의 정신이나 몸이나,

and not what happens to us,

우리에게 일어난 일이 아니라

but how we respond to what happens to us.

I wished to tell him that not only paralyzers

저는 그에게 장애를 일으킨 사람과

and paralyzees must evolve, reconcile to reality,

장애를 당한 사람 뿐 아니라

but we all must --

우리 모두 - 나이들고, 불안에 떨고,

the aging and the anxious and the divorced and the balding

이혼하고, 머리 숱이 빠져가고, 파산을 당해도

and the bankrupt and everyone.

현실 그대로를 받아 들여야 한다고 말하고 싶었습니다.

I wished to tell him that one does not have to say

또 저는 그에게 나쁜 일이 좋은 일이 될 수는 없다고,

that a bad thing is good,

나쁜 일도 신에게서 왔으니

that a crash is from God and so a crash is good,

사고도 좋은 것이고, 목이 부러진 것도 좋은 것이라고

a broken neck is good.

말할 수는 없다고 말하고 싶었습니다.

One can say that a bad thing sucks,

누구도 나쁜 일을 저주할 수 있지만,

but that this natural world still has many glories.

우리가 사는 세상은 아직 많은 좋은 것들이 있다고 말이지요.

I wished to tell him that, in the end, our mandate is clear:

저는 그에게 마지막 우리의 임무는 분명하다고,

We have to rise above bad fortune.

나쁜 운을 밟고 일어서야 한다고 말하고 싶었습니다.

We have to be in the good and enjoy the good,

우리는 좋은 것 안에서, 좋은 것을 즐겨야 한다고,

study and work and adventure and friendship -- oh, friendship --

공부하고, 일하고, 모험과 우정 - 오 우정 -- 공동체와 사랑을

and community and love.

즐겨야 한다고 말하고 싶었습니다.

But most of all, I wished to tell him

하지만 무엇보다도 저는 에베드에게

what Herman Melville wrote,

that "truly to enjoy bodily warmth,

If you are mindful of what you do not have,

and if the gods are kind, you may truly enjoy what you have.

That is the one singular gift you may receive

만약 여러분이 실존의 방법 때문에 고민한다면,

if you suffer in any existential way.

그것이 바로 여러분이 받은 하나의 선물입니다.

You know death, and so may wake each morning

여러분은 죽음을 알고, 매일 일어나며,

pulsing with ready life.

준비된 삶에 두근거릴 수 있습니다.

Some part of you is cold,

여러분의 어떤 부분이 차가우면,

and so another part may truly enjoy what it is to be warm,

다른 부분의 따뜻함을 진정으로 즐길 수 있고,

or even to be cold.

아니면 오히려 차가운 것을 즐길 수도 있겠지요.

When one morning, years after the crash,

어느 날 아침, 사고가 난지 수 년 후,

I stepped onto stone and the underside of my left foot

저는 돌 위로 발걸음을 옮기며, 저의 왼발 아래에서

felt the flash of cold, nerves at last awake,

차가움을 느끼며, 신경들이 마침내 깨어나는 것을 느꼈습니다.

it was exhilarating, a gust of snow.

그것은 마치 차가운 바람처럼 상쾌했지요.

But I didn't say these things to Abed.

그렇지만 저는 아베드에게 이런 것을 말하지 않았습니다.

I told him only that he had killed one man, not two.

저는 단지 그가 두 사람이 아니라 한 사람을 죽였다고 말했고,

I told him the name of that man.

그 사람의 이름을 말해주었습니다.

And then I said, "Goodbye."
