What's your sign?

ھێماکەی تۆ چییە؟

In Western astrology,

لە گەردوونناسی ڕۆژھەڵاتی دا،

it's a constellation determined by when your birthday falls in the calendar.

ئەمە ھەسارەیەکە دیاریکراوە بەپێی ڕۆژی لە دایک بوونت.

But according to the Chinese zodiac, or shēngxiào,

بەڵام بە پێی بورجە چینییەکان، یان شەنگکساو

it's your shǔxiàng, meaning the animal assigned to your birth year.

ئەوە شویسای تۆیە، واتە ئەو ئاژەڵانەی پەیوەندیان ھەیە بە ساڵی لە دایک بوونتەوە.

And of the many myths explaining these animal signs and their arrangement,

لە نێو زۆرێک ئەفسانە، کە ئەم نیشانانە و چۆنێتی ڕێکخستنیان ڕوون دەکەنەوە،

the most enduring one is that of the Great Race.

بەھێزترین بریتییە لە ئەفسانەی پێشبڕکێی گەورە.

As the story goes, Yù Dì, or Jade Emperor, Ruler of the Heavens,

وەک چێرۆکەکە دەڵێت، یو دی، یان ئیمپراتۆر جەید، فەرمانڕەوای ئاسمانەکان،

wanted to devise a way to measure time, so he organized a race.

ویستی شێوازێک دابڕێژێت بۆ پێوانە کردنی کات، و بۆیە پێشبڕکێیەکی ڕێکخست.

The first twelve animals to make it across the river

دوانزە یەکەمین ئاژەڵەکان کە بپەڕنەوە بە ڕوبارەکەدا

would earn a spot on the zodiac calendar in the order they arrived.

شوێنێک بەدەست دەھێنن لەسەر ساڵنامەی بورجەکان، بەپێی ڕیزبەندی گەیشتنیان.

The rat rose with the sun to get an early start,

مشک لەگەڵ خۆردا ھەلستا تا زوو دەست پێ بکات،

but on the way to the river,

بەڵام لە ڕێگەی بۆ ڕوبارەکە،

he met the horse, the tiger, and the ox.

چاوی کەوت بە ئەسپ، پڵنگ، و گا.

Because the rat was small and couldn't swim very well,

لەبەر ئەوەی مشکەکە بچووک بوو و نەیدەتوانی بە باشی مەلە بکات،

he asked the bigger animals for help.

داوای یارمەتی لە ئاژەڵە گەورەکان کرد.

While the tiger and horse refused,

لە کاتێکدا پڵنگ و ئەسپ ڕەتیان کردەوە،

the kind-hearted ox agreed to carry the rat across.

گایە میھرەبانەکە ڕازی بوو کە مشکەکە بپەڕێنێتەوە.

Yet, just as they were about to reach the other side,

کەچی، ھەر کە خەریک بوو بگەن بە لایەکەی تر،

the rat jumped off the ox's head and secured first place.

مشکەکە لە سەر سەری گایەکەوە بازی ھەڵدا و شوێنی یەکەمی مسۆگەر کرد.

The ox came in second,

گایەکە دووەم ئاژەڵ ھات،

with the powerful tiger right behind him.

لەگەڵ پڵنگێکی بەھێز لە پشتییەوە.

The rabbit, too small to battle the current,

کەروێشکەکە زۆر بچووک بوو، نەیدەتوانی بپەڕێتەوە،

nimbly hopped across stones and logs to come in fourth.

بزێوانە ھەوڵی دەدا بەسەر تەختەو بەردەکاندا بپەڕێنێتەوە تا چوارەم بێت.

Next came the dragon, who could have flown directly across,

دواتر ئەژدیھاکە ھات، کە دەیتوانی بفڕێت و بپەڕێتەوە،

but stopped to help some creatures she had encountered on the way.

بەڵام دەوەستا بۆ یارمەتیدانی ھەندێک بونەوەر کە لە ڕێگەدا دەیبینین.

After her came the horse, galloping across the river.

دوای ئەو ئەسپەکە ھات، غاری دەدا بەسەر ڕوبارەکەدا.

But just as she got across, the snake slithered by.

بەڵام ھەر کە پەڕیەوە، مارێک خشا بە لایدا

The startled horse reared back, letting the snake sneak into sixth place.

ئەسپە ترساوەکە گەڕایەوە پاش، ڕێیدا بە مارەکە بچێتە شەشەم پلە.

The Jade Emperor looked out at the river

ئیمپراتۆر جەید سەیری ڕوبارەکەی کرد

and spotted the sheep, the monkey, and the rooster all atop a raft,

و مەڕ و مەیمونی دیت، لەگەڵ کەڵەشێر لەسەر کەڵەکێک،

working together to push it through the weeds.

بەیەکەوە ھەوڵیان دەدا پاڵی نێن بە ناو گژوگیا کەدا.

When they made it across,

کاتێک پەڕینەوە ئەو بەر

the trio agreed to give eighth place to the sheep,

ھەرسێکیان ڕازی بوون کە ھەشتەم شوێن بدەن بە مەڕەکە،

who had been the most comforting and harmonious of them,

کە لە ھەموویان ئاسودەتر و دڵنەواییکەرتر و گونجاوترە،

followed by the monkey and the rooster.

بەدواییدا مەیمون و کەڵەشێرەکە دێن.

Next came the dog, scrambling onto the shore.

دواتر سەگ ھات، بە کەنارەکەدا سەرکەوت.

He was a great swimmer,

ئەو مەلەوانێکی مەزن بوو.

but frolicked in the water for so long that he only managed to come in eleventh.

بەڵام بۆ ماوەیەکی درێژ یاری کرد لە نێو ئاوەکە بۆیە ١١ یەمین بوو.

The final spot was claimed by the pig,

کۆتا شوێن مافی بەراز بوو،

who had gotten hungry and stopped to eat and nap

کە برسی ببوو و وەستا بوو بۆ خواردن و سوکە خەوێک

before finally waddling across the finish line.

پێش ئەوەی بە ئیسراحەت بگاتە ھێڵی کۆتایی.

And so, each year is associated with one of the animals in this order,

و بۆیە، ھەر ساڵێک پەیوەستە بە یەکێک لەم ئاژەڵانەوە بەم ڕیزبەندییە،

with the cycle starting over every 60 years.

ھەر ٦٠ ساڵ جارێک و زیاتر خولێک دەست پێ دەکات.

Why 60 and not twelve?

بۆچی ٦٠، بۆچی ١٢ نەبوو؟

Well, the traditional Chinese calendar is made up of two overlapping systems.

ڕۆژژمێری کلتوری چینی دروست بووە لە دوو سیستەمی تێکھەڵکێشراو.

The animals of the zodiac are associated with what's called

ئاژەڵەکانی بورجەکان پەیوەستن بە

the Twelve Earthly Branches, or shí'èrzhī.

دوانزە لقەکەی زەویەوە، یان shí'èrzhī.

Another system, the Ten Heavenly Stems, or tiāngān,

سیستەمەکەی تر، دە قەدە ئاسمانییەکە، یان tiāngān،

is linked with the five classical elements

پەیوەندی ھەیە بە پێنج ڕەگەزە دێرینەکەوە

of metal, xīn,

کانزا، تین

wood, mù,

دار، مو

water, shuǐ,

ئاو، شوەی

fire, huǒ,

ئاگر، ھوئە

and earth, tǔ.

و زەوی، توو".

Each element is assigned yīn or yáng,

ھەر ڕەگەزێک نێر و مێی قەدە ئاسمانییەکانی دەدرێتە پاڵ،

creating a ten-year cycle.

و خولێکی دە ساڵەیی دروست دەکەن.

When the twelve animals of the Earthly Branches

کاتێک دوانزە ئاژەڵەکەی لقەکانی زەوی

are matched with the five elements

دەخرێنە پاڵ ٥ ڕەگەزەکە

plus the yīn or the yáng of the Heavenly Stems,

و نێر و مێی قەدە ئاسمانییەکان

it creates 60 years of different combinations,

ئەوا ٦٠ ساڵ لە پێکھاتەی جیاواز دروست دەکات

known as a sexagenary cycle, or gānzhī.

ناسراو بە خولی شەست ساڵە، یان گانج.

So someone born in 1980 would have the sign of yáng metal monkey,

بۆیە یەکێک کە لە ١٩٨٠ لە دایک دەبێت ھێمای یاو مەیمونی کانزایی دەبێت،

while someone born in 2007 would be yīn fire pig.

لە کاتێکدا کەسێک لە ٢٠٠٧ لە دایک بووە دەبێتە بەرازی ئاگر ین.

In fact, you can also have an inner animal based on your birth month,

لە ڕاستیدا، تۆ دەتوانیت ئاژەڵێکی ناخیت ھەبێت بە پێی مانگی لە دایک بوونت،

a true animal based on your birth date,

و ئاژەڵێکی ڕاستی بە پێی ڕۆژی لە دایک بوونت،

and a secret animal based on your birth hour.

و ئاژەڵێکی نھێنی بە پێی کاتژمێری لە دایک بوونت.

It was the great race that supposedly determined

ئەوە پێشبڕکێ گەورەکە بوو بۆ دیاری کردنی

which animals were enshrined in the Chinese zodiac,

کام ئاژەڵ دەچێتە نێو بورجی چینیەوە،

but as the system spread through Asia,

بەڵام ھەر کە سیستەمەکە بە ئاسیادا بڵاو بۆوە،

other cultures made changes to reflect their communities.

کلتورەکانی تر گۆڕانکاریان کرد بە پێی ڕەنگدانەوەی کۆمەڵگەکانیان.

So if you consult the Vietnamese zodiac,

بۆیە ئەگەر سەیری بورجی ڤێتنامی بکەیت،

you may discover that you're a cat, not a rabbit,

لەوانەیە بۆت دەرکەوێت کە تۆ ھێماکەت، پشیلەیە،نەک کەروێشک،

and if you're in Thailand,

و ئەگەر تۆ لە تایلەند بیت،

a mythical snake called a Naga replaces the dragon.

ماری ئەفسانەیی کە پێی دەگوترێت ناگا شوێنی ئەژدیھا دەگرێتەوە.

So whether or not you place stock in what the zodiac says

بۆیە ڕاست بێ یان نا ئەوەی شوێنی بورجەکەت دەیڵێت

about you as an individual,

دەربارەی تۆ وەک تاک،

it certainly reveals much about the culture it comes from.
