What's your sign?

In Western astrology,

西洋占星術では

it's a constellation determined by when your birthday falls in the calendar.

誕生日によって決まる星座です

But according to the Chinese zodiac, or shēngxiào,

一方 中国で古来より 暦などに使われている「生肖」によると

it's your shǔxiàng, meaning the animal assigned to your birth year.

運命は生まれ年によって決まる動物 つまり「属相」（干支、えと）で表されます

And of the many myths explaining these animal signs and their arrangement,

ここで登場する12の動物や その並べ順の決め方には諸説ありますが

the most enduring one is that of the Great Race.

最も有力な説は 「動物の大競争」の結果というものです

As the story goes, Yù Dì, or Jade Emperor, Ruler of the Heavens,

その昔 玉皇大帝（玉帝）という神が 天を統治していました

wanted to devise a way to measure time, so he organized a race.

玉皇大帝は時を表す仕組みを作るため 動物たちを競争させることにしました

The first twelve animals to make it across the river

最初に川を渡ることができた 12の動物の到着順に

would earn a spot on the zodiac calendar in the order they arrived.

暦年を数えることに決めたのです

The rat rose with the sun to get an early start,

ネズミは日の出と同時に起き 素早いスタートを切りましたが

but on the way to the river,

川に向かう途中で

he met the horse, the tiger, and the ox.

馬 トラ 牛に追いつかれました

Because the rat was small and couldn't swim very well,

ネズミは身体が小さく 泳ぎも得意ではないので

he asked the bigger animals for help.

大きな動物たちに自分を 乗せてくれと頼んでみました

While the tiger and horse refused,

トラと馬は申し出を断わりましたが

the kind-hearted ox agreed to carry the rat across.

心の広い牛は ネズミを乗せて川を渡ると言ってくれました

Yet, just as they were about to reach the other side,

それにもかかわらず 牛がネズミを乗せて 川を渡り切る寸前に

the rat jumped off the ox's head and secured first place.

ネズミは牛の頭から飛び降りて 対岸に一番乗りを果たしました

The ox came in second,

続いて牛がゴールイン

with the powerful tiger right behind him.

力の強いトラが すぐ後に続きました

The rabbit, too small to battle the current,

ウサギは泳ぐと流されてしまうので

nimbly hopped across stones and logs to come in fourth.

石や流木の上を素早く跳ねて渡り ４着となりました

Next came the dragon, who could have flown directly across,

その次に到着したのが 川の上空をまっすぐ飛んで渡れる龍です

but stopped to help some creatures she had encountered on the way.

しかし途中で 競争相手を助けて遅れました

After her came the horse, galloping across the river.

後に続いたのは馬 駆け足で川を渡りました

But just as she got across, the snake slithered by.

しかし馬が岸に上がったとたん ヘビが滑り込んできました

The startled horse reared back, letting the snake sneak into sixth place.

驚いた馬が思わずのけぞった間に ヘビが６着となりました

The Jade Emperor looked out at the river

玉皇大帝は川面を見渡して

and spotted the sheep, the monkey, and the rooster all atop a raft,

羊 サル ニワトリが １本の流木に乗っているのに気づきました

working together to push it through the weeds.

皆で協力して水草をかき分け 懸命に前進していました

When they made it across,

ようやく皆が岸に着いた時

the trio agreed to give eighth place to the sheep,

互いに順位を相談し 羊が８着となりました

who had been the most comforting and harmonious of them,

一番 他の動物を励まし 調和を大切にしたからです

followed by the monkey and the rooster.

次にサルとニワトリが続きました

Next came the dog, scrambling onto the shore.

続いて犬が岸に這い上がってきました

He was a great swimmer,

犬は泳ぎが得意ですが

but frolicked in the water for so long that he only managed to come in eleventh.

ふざけながら泳いだのでずいぶん遅くなり 11番目にやっと到着しました

The final spot was claimed by the pig,

最後がブタです

who had gotten hungry and stopped to eat and nap

途中でお腹が空き 休んで昼寝もしたので

before finally waddling across the finish line.

ブタはよたよたしながら 最後にゴールインしました

And so, each year is associated with one of the animals in this order,

こうして１年を表す12の動物と その順番が決まりました

with the cycle starting over every 60 years.

この順序は 60年で一回りする暦に 組み入れられています

Why 60 and not twelve?

12年ではなく60年周期の理由は？

Well, the traditional Chinese calendar is made up of two overlapping systems.

中国古来の暦は ２種類のものを組み合わせて できています

The animals of the zodiac are associated with what's called

１つは 先ほどの12種類の動物による

the Twelve Earthly Branches, or shí'èrzhī.

「十二地支」すなわち一般的に 「十二支」と言われるものです

Another system, the Ten Heavenly Stems, or tiāngān,

さらに 天の幹となる10の要素を意味する 「天干」と組み合わせます

is linked with the five classical elements

天干は万物の元になる 「五行」と関係しています

of metal, xīn,

その五行とは 金属を表す「金」

wood, mù,

樹木を表す「木」

water, shuǐ,

水を表す「水」

fire, huǒ,

火を表す「火」

and earth, tǔ.

大地を表す「土」の５つです

Each element is assigned yīn or yáng,

この５つの要素すべてに 「陰」と「陽」があるため

creating a ten-year cycle.

10年の周期となります

When the twelve animals of the Earthly Branches

大地の枝である12の動物「十二地支」と

are matched with the five elements

五行の要素に

plus the yīn or the yáng of the Heavenly Stems,

陰陽を組み合わせて10個になる天干 すなわち「十天干」で

it creates 60 years of different combinations,

60通りの組み合わせができます

known as a sexagenary cycle, or gānzhī.

これが60年周期の「干支」です

So someone born in 1980 would have the sign of yáng metal monkey,

例えば1980年生まれの人は 金の陽のサルで「庚申」（かのえさる）

while someone born in 2007 would be yīn fire pig.

2007年生まれの人は火の陰のブタ（猪）で 「丁亥」（ひのとい）となります

In fact, you can also have an inner animal based on your birth month,

実は他にも 誕生月に基づく 内なる干支

a true animal based on your birth date,

誕生した「日」に基づく 真の干支

and a secret animal based on your birth hour.

さらに生まれた「時刻」に基づく 秘密の干支もあります

It was the great race that supposedly determined

中国の暦で 天に仕えて年を表す動物の

which animals were enshrined in the Chinese zodiac,

順番を決めたのは 「動物の大競争」だと言われていますが

but as the system spread through Asia,

十二支がアジア全体に普及するなかで

other cultures made changes to reflect their communities.

各国の事情に合わせて それぞれアレンジが加えられています

So if you consult the Vietnamese zodiac,

例えばベトナムの十二支では

you may discover that you're a cat, not a rabbit,

ウサギの代わりに猫が加わっています

and if you're in Thailand,

また タイの十二支では

a mythical snake called a Naga replaces the dragon.

龍の代わりにタイの伝説上のヘビ 「ナーガ」が加わっています

So whether or not you place stock in what the zodiac says

干支に基づいた占いを信じる人も

about you as an individual,

そうでない人もいるでしょうが

it certainly reveals much about the culture it comes from.

各国固有の文化は こうして 干支にも反映されています
