In Western astrology,

서양의 점성술에서는

it's a constellation determined by when your birthday falls in the calendar.

But according to the Chinese zodiac, or shēngxiào,

그러나, 중국의 12궁도, 혹은 띠의 경우에는

it's your shǔxiàng, meaning the animal assigned to your birth year.

우리의 띠 동물, 즉 태어난 해로 결정되는 동물이 있습니다.

And of the many myths explaining these animal signs and their arrangement,

이 동물 띠와 띠의 순서에 대한 많고 많은 신화 중에서

the most enduring one is that of the Great Race.

가장 오래도록 전해져 오는 것은 '위대한 경주'라는 이야기입니다.

그 줄거리는 이렇습니다.

As the story goes, Yù Dì, or Jade Emperor, Ruler of the Heavens,

유디, 즉 천당을 다스리는 옥황상제는

wanted to devise a way to measure time, so he organized a race.

날짜를 새는 방법을 고안하다 한 경주를 준비하게 되었습니다.

The first twelve animals to make it across the river

강을 건너 맞은 편에 가장 먼저 도착하는 12종류의 동물들만이

would earn a spot on the zodiac calendar in the order they arrived.

들어온 순서대로 황도대 달력에 한 자리를 얻을 수 있도록 했죠.

쥐는 일찍 출발하기 위해 해가 뜰 때 일어났습니다.

The rat rose with the sun to get an early start,

but on the way to the river,

그런데, 강으로 가던 도중에 말과 호랑이, 그리고 소를 만났죠.

he met the horse, the tiger, and the ox.

Because the rat was small and couldn't swim very well,

아주 작아서 수영을 잘 못하는 쥐는 다른 큰 동물들에게 도움을 구했습니다.

he asked the bigger animals for help.

While the tiger and horse refused,

호랑이와 말은 부탁을 거절했지만

the kind-hearted ox agreed to carry the rat across.

마음씨 좋은 소는 쥐를 강 건너까지 태워주었습니다.

Yet, just as they were about to reach the other side,

그런데, 이 동물들이 반대편에 도착하는 찰나에

the rat jumped off the ox's head and secured first place.

쥐가 소의 머리에서 뛰어내려 1등을 차지하게 되었죠.

The ox came in second,

소는 2등을 차지했고

with the powerful tiger right behind him.

무시무시한 호랑이가 뒤이어 들어왔습니다.

The rabbit, too small to battle the current,

몸집이 작아 거센 물살을 이길 수 없었던 토끼는

nimbly hopped across stones and logs to come in fourth.

돌과 통나무 사이를 날쌔게 건너 뛰며 4등으로 들어왔습니다.

Next came the dragon, who could have flown directly across,

다음으로 용이 들어왔습니다.

날아서 한번에 강을 건널 수 있었지만

but stopped to help some creatures she had encountered on the way.

도중에 다른 동물들을 돕느라 멈추었어야 했습니다.

After her came the horse, galloping across the river.

용을 뒤따라 말이 열심히 달리며 강을 건넜지만

But just as she got across, the snake slithered by.

도착하기 바로 직전에 뱀이 미끄러지듯 옆을 스쳐 지나갔죠.

The startled horse reared back, letting the snake sneak into sixth place.

말이 놀라서 뒷걸음을 치는 바람에 뱀에게 6등 자리를 내주었습니다.

The Jade Emperor looked out at the river

옥황상제가 강 쪽을 내다보다

and spotted the sheep, the monkey, and the rooster all atop a raft,

양과 원숭이, 그리고 닭이 함께 뗏목을 타고 있는 것을 발견했습니다.

working together to push it through the weeds.

이들은 힘을 모아 수풀을 헤치며 나아가려 하고 있었습니다.

When they made it across,

무사히 반대편에 도착하자

the trio agreed to give eighth place to the sheep,

삼총사는 의견을 모아 8등을 양에게 주기로 결정했습니다.

who had been the most comforting and harmonious of them,

그 셋 중에서 가장 힘이 되어주었고 협동적이었기 때문이었습니다.

followed by the monkey and the rooster.

그 뒤로 원숭이와 닭이 차례대로 들어갔죠.

Next came the dog, scrambling onto the shore.

다음으로 개가 뭍으로 기어오르며 도착했습니다.

He was a great swimmer,

개는 뛰어난 수영실력을 가졌지만 너무 오래 헤엄쳐서 지치는 바람에

but frolicked in the water for so long that he only managed to come in eleventh.

결국 11등 밖에 차지하지 못했죠.

The final spot was claimed by the pig,

마지막 자리는 돼지가 차지했습니다.

who had gotten hungry and stopped to eat and nap

도중에 배가 너무 고파서 먹고 한 숨 자다가 오는 바람에

before finally waddling across the finish line.

가까스로 결승선에 도착할 수 있었죠.

And so, each year is associated with one of the animals in this order,

with the cycle starting over every 60 years.

Why 60 and not twelve?

Well, the traditional Chinese calendar is made up of two overlapping systems.

그건 중국의 전통 달력은 두 가지가 겹치는 체계로 되어 있기 때문입니다.

The animals of the zodiac are associated with what's called

황도대의 동물들은 땅에서 비롯된 12종류의 가지를 의미합니다.

the Twelve Earthly Branches, or shí'èrzhī.

'십이지지(十二地支)'라고 하죠.

Another system, the Ten Heavenly Stems, or tiāngān,

또 하나의 체계는 하늘에서 비롯된 10가지 줄기를 의미하는

'천간(天干)' 입니다.

is linked with the five classical elements

이것은 중국의 오행설과 연관이 있고

of metal, xīn,

금속은 '금'.

wood, mù,

나무는 '목'.

water, shuǐ,

물은 '수'.

fire, huǒ,

불은 '화'.

and earth, tǔ.

그리고 땅은 '토'라고 합니다.

Each element is assigned yīn or yáng,

이들 각각의 원소에 음과 양의 속성을 덧붙이면

creating a ten-year cycle.

10년의 반복 주기가 되죠.

When the twelve animals of the Earthly Branches

십이지의 12마리 동물들이 오행설과 짝 지어지고

are matched with the five elements

plus the yīn or the yáng of the Heavenly Stems,

천간의 음과 양까지 더해짐으로써 총 60년의 조합이 만들어지며

it creates 60 years of different combinations,

known as a sexagenary cycle, or gānzhī.

이를 육갑(六甲), 또는 간지(干支)라고 칭합니다.

So someone born in 1980 would have the sign of yáng metal monkey,

따라서, 1980년에 태어난 사람은 양의 금 원숭이띠를 갖게 되고

while someone born in 2007 would be yīn fire pig.

2007년에 태어난 사람은 음의 불 돼지띠를 갖게 되죠.

In fact, you can also have an inner animal based on your birth month,

a true animal based on your birth date,

So if you consult the Vietnamese zodiac,

So whether or not you place stock in what the zodiac says
