Adjusting her disguise, Zhu Yingtai prepared to bid her parents goodbye.

دوای خۆگۆڕینەکەی، ژو ینگتای خواحافیزی لە باوانی کرد.

She had always been a dutiful daughter— staying home

هەمیشە ئەو کچێکی باش بوو -- لە ماڵەوە بوو

and creating works of embroidery that brought her parents pride.

و کاری نەخشی دەکرد و باوانی پێی سەربەرز بوون.

And yet, although only boys were allowed at the Confucius Academy in Hangzhou,

هێشتا، تەنها کوڕەکان دەیانتوانی بچنە ئەکادیمیای کۆنفۆشیۆس لە هانگژو،

what Yingtai truly wanted was to go to school.

ژو ینگتای دەیەویست بچێتە ئەم قوتابخانەیە.

She begged her parents to let her attend dressed as a boy

داوای لە باوانی کرد لێگەڕێن بڕوا وەک کوڕێک

and, seeing her determination and clever disguises, they finally agreed.

و، بەهۆی سووربوون و زیرەکی، ئەوان ڕازی بوون.

However, they only gave her permission when she promised

بەهەرحاڵ، ئەوان ڕێگەیان پێدا چونکە بەڵێنیدا

to keep her true identity a secret

ناسنامەی ڕاستەقینەی بە نهێنی بهێڵێتەوە

and eventually return to the traditional path they’d set for her.

و لەکۆتایی بگەڕێتەوە سەر ئەو ڕێگایەی ئەوان بۆیان داناوە.

Elated, Yingtai began her journey to Hangzhou.

دواتر، ینگتای دەستی کرد بە گەشت بۆ هانگژو.

On the way, she found herself at a crossroads,

لە ڕێگا، خۆی لە چوارڕەیانێکدا دۆزییەوە،

unsure which route to take when a young man approached.

نەیدەزانی بچێتە کامە ڕێگا پیاوێکی گەنج نزیک بوویەوە.

As their eyes met, they shared an instant connection.

کە چاویان بە یەک کەوت، یەکسەر پەیوەندییان بەست.

Yingtai learned that his name was Liang Shanbo,

ینگتای زانی ئەو ناوی شانبۆیە،

and that he’d be her classmate at the academy,

و دەبێتە هاوپۆلی لە ئەکادیمیەکە،

so they walked the rest of the way together, rapt in conversation.

بۆیە ڕێگاکەیان پێکەوە بڕی، بەدەم قسەکردنەوە.

Yingtai realized that, despite her meticulous disguise,

ینگتای هەستی کرد، سەرەڕای خۆگۆڕینەکەی،

she felt that she could finally be herself.

هەستی دەکرد دەتوانێت ئاسایی خۆی ڕەفتار بکات.

The two decided to celebrate what they thought would be

دووانەکە پێیان باش بوو ئاهەنگ بگێرن بۆ

a long, close friendship, and became sworn brothers.

هاوڕێیەتییەکی درێژ، نزیک، و بوون بە برای یەکتر.

At the academy, Yingtai buried herself in books

لە ئەکادیمیا، ینگتای خۆی لە کتێبەکاندا نقووم کرد

and studied with Shanbo late into the nights.

و تا درەنگانی شەو لەگەڵ شانبۆ دەیانخوێند.

The two felt at home so long as they were at each other’s sides.

دووانەکە هەستیان دەکرد لە ماڵەوەن کاتێک پێکەوە بوون.

They shared a room, but even though Shanbo questioned her about it,

پێکەوە لە ژوورێک بوون، بەڵام هەرچەندە شانبۆ پرسیاری دەکرد،

Yingtai always used the bathroom alone

ینگتای هەمیشە بە تەنها دەچووە سەرئاو

and buttoned her thick robes up to her chin— no matter the weather.

و قۆپچەکانی تا گەردەنی دادەخست-- گرنگ نەبوو کەشوهەوا چۆنە.

Now and again, Yingtai heard students muttering about her secretive behavior.

جار جار، ینگتای گوێی لە قوتابییەکان دەبوو باسی ڕەفتارییان دەکرد.

As months slipped into years, Yingtai continued to excel at her studies

مانگەکان بوون بە ساڵ، ینگتای بەردەوام بوو لە خوێندنی

and felt like her past— and intended future—were lifetimes away.

و هەستی دەکرد ڕابردووی-- و داهاتووی-- زۆر لە یەک دوورن.

Yet the whispers grew louder.

چپە چپەکانیش هەر زیاتر دەبوون.

And after three years, she had no choice but to leave.

و دوای سێ ساڵ، جگە لە ڕۆیشتن هیچ هەڵبژاردنێکی کەی نەبوو.

Parting tearfully, Yingtai asked Shanbo to visit her.

بەدەم گریانەوە، ینگتای بە شانبۆی وت سەردانی بکات.

When Yingtai returned home,

کاتێک ینگتای گەڕایەوە ماڵەوە،

her parents announced that the Ma family from the neighboring village

باوانی پێیان وت خێزانی ما لە گوندی دراوسێیان

had sent a matchmaker to ask their permission

داوایەکیان ناردووە بۆ ڕێگەپێدان

for Yingtai to marry their son.

لە ینگتای تا شوو بە کوڕەکەیان بکات.

They’d found it a fitting match and accepted.

ئەوان دووانەیەکی باش بوون و ڕازی بوون.

Trying to hide her disappointment, Yingtai honored their agreement.

لەگەڵ هەوڵی بۆ شاردنەوەی بێئومێدییەکەی، ینگتای ڕازی بوو بەمە.

But as she prepared for another new life, she thought of Shanbo.

بەڵام کە خۆی ئامادە دەکرد بۆ ژیانێکی کە، بیری لە شانبۆ کردەوە.

Meanwhile, he too was distracted— his studies dull without Yingtai near.

لەهەمان کات، ئەویش وابوو -- خوێندنی خراپ بوو بەبێ ینگتای.

When Shanbo finally visited Yingtai’s house,

کاتێک خێزانی شانبۆ سەردانی ماڵی ینگتایان کرد،

he came upon a young woman.

ئافرەتێکی لاوی بینی.

He was about to ask for her brother,

ئەو دەربارەی براکەی پرسیاری دەکرد،

but as their eyes met, he recognized the young scholar he’d always loved.

کە چاویان بە چاوی یەکتر کرد، زانی ئەو کەسەیە کە پێکەوە دەیانخوێند و خۆشی دەویست.

Shanbo knew he couldn’t stand being separated from Yingtai again

شانبۆ دەیزانی دووبارە ناتوانێت دوور بێت لە ینگتای

and asked her to marry him.

و داوای لێکرد شووی پێ بکات.

But, heartbroken, Yingtai told him that she was already promised to another.

بەڵام، دڵشکاوییانە، ینگتای پێی وت بەڵێنی بە یەکێکی تر داوە.

Shanbo was devastated, but he understood that Yingtai had to abide

شانبۆ وێران بوو، بەڵام دەیزانی ینگتای دەبێت گویڕایەڵی

by her parents’ wishes, and they parted again.

قسەکانی باوانی بێت، دووبارە جیابوونەوە.

Shanbo fell ill and grew weaker by the day.

شانبۆ نەخۆش بوو و ڕۆژ دوای ڕۆژ لاوازتر دەبوو.

Worried, his family sent a matchmaker to the Zhu family.

نیگەران بوون، خێزانی ئەو داوایەکیان نارد بۆ خێزانی ژو.

But, because of Yingtai’s current engagement,

بەڵام، لەبەر خوازبێنی ینگتای،

her father refused the proposal.

باوکی داواکەی ڕەتکردەوە.

Doing otherwise would bring their family public shame.

بە پێچەوانەوە خێزانەکە تووشی شەرمەزاری دەبوو.

Shanbo’s Illness took a turn for the worse

نەخۆشیەکەی شانبۆ خراپتر بوو

and, sensing he wouldn’t live to see her married,

و، دەیزانی ناژیێت تا بە مارەکراوی بیبینێت،

Shanbo wrote Yingtai a final letter.

شانبۆ کۆتا نامەی بۆ ینگتای نووسی.

If Yingtai loved him, he asked that she burn incense

گەر ینگتای خۆشیدەوێت، داوای کرد مۆمێک بسوتێنێت

in front of his tomb when she was on her way to the Ma family.

لە پێش گۆڕی ئەو کاتێک لە ڕێگایە بۆ خێزانی ما.

When Yingtai’s wedding day came, it also felt like a funeral.

کاتێک ڕۆژی هاوسەرگیری ینگتای هات، وەکو پرسەییەک وابوو.

As the procession wound through town under stormy skies,

کە گالیسکەکە دەڕۆیشت لە شارۆچکە لەژێر ئاسمانی بروسکاوی،

Yingtai broke off and knelt in front of Shanbo’s tomb,

ینگتای ڕۆیشت و چووە سەر گۆڕەکەی شانبۆ،

lighting incense and offering sacrifices through her tears.

مۆمی داگیرساند و بە گریانەوە داوای قوربانی دەکرد.

Suddenly, a clap of thunder sounded above

لە ناکاو، دەنگی بروسکەیەک هات لە سەرەوە

and a lightning bolt shot through the tomb,

و بروسکەکە لە گۆڕەکەیدا،

fracturing the stone.

بەردەکەی شەقکرد.

Without hesitation, Yingtai threw herself in.

بەبێ دوودڵی، ینگتای خۆی خستەناوەوە.

As her parents rushed to rescue their daughter,

باوانی چوون کچەکەیان ڕزگاربکەن،

two butterflies fluttered out of the crack.

دوو پەپوولە لە درزەکەوە هاتنە دەرەوە.

This time, Yingtai had transformed for good.

ئەمجارە، ینگتای تەواو گۆڕابوو.

Finally free, she could float forever with Shanbo at her side.

ئازاد بوو، دەیتوانی تا هەتایە بفڕێت لەگەڵ شانبۆ لە تەنیشتیەوە.
