I'm Esther and in this video I'm going to teach you how to ask someone for permission

أنا إستير وفي هذا الفيديو سأعلمك كيفية طلب الإذن من شخص ما.

Okay so before I teach you that,

حسنًا، قبل أن أعلمك ذلك،

let's first talk about what permission means.

دعنا نتحدث أولاً عن معنى الإذن.

Okay so...

When you want to ask someone if it's okay to do something, you're asking for permission.

عندما تريد أن تسأل شخصًا ما إذا كان من المقبول القيام بشيء ما، فإنك تطلب الإذن.

Okay again, you want to do something, you don't know if it's okay, so you ask someone.

For example, maybe you want to borrow something.

Then you should ask someone.

If you just take it that's stealing, right?

So you have to ask.

Is it okay? Alright?

So there are three ways to ask for permission in English.

لذلك هناك ثلاث طرق لطلب الإذن باللغة الإنجليزية.

The first way is to say, "Can I...?" "Can I...?" Okay.

الطريقة الأولى هي أن تقول: "هل يمكنني...؟" "هل استطيع...؟" تمام.

The second way is "Could I...?" "Could I...?"

الطريقة الثانية هي "هل يمكنني...؟" "هل يمكنني...؟"

And the third way is, "May I...?" "May I...?" Okay.

والطريقة الثالثة هي "هل لي...؟" "ربما أنا...؟" تمام.

So 'can I', 'could I', and 'may I' are all good

لذا فإن "هل يمكنني"، و"هل يمكنني"، و"هل يمكنني" كلها

ways to ask for permission.

طرق جيدة لطلب الإذن.

But the third one, 'may I', is more polite. Okay.

لكن الكلمة الثالثة "هل لي" هي أكثر أدبًا. تمام.

So if you want to ask somebody who has more power,

لذا، إذا كنت تريد أن تسأل شخصًا لديه المزيد من السلطة،

maybe your parents, may be your teacher,

ربما والديك، أو ربما يكون معلمك،

then you should say 'may I'.

Maybe even to somebody that you don't know very well,

it's better to say may I because again it's more polite.

So let's look at these examples.

Okay so I've written 'can I', 'could I', and 'may I'

Remember, after these three, you have to say a verb.

Okay so let's look at the verbs.

'help' 'see' 'have' 'call' 'borrow' 'go' 'speak' and 'go' again.

Okay so I know I went through that a little bit quickly but

Okay so here's what we'll do.

I'm going to read and try to switch some around. Okay?

So... "Can I help you?"

Let's try that a little bit faster.

Now remember, you can also say 'could I' and 'may I'.

For example, if you're walking through a department store,

and the salesperson comes to you,

they would probably say, "May I help you?" because they want to be polite to the customer.

So again, "May I help you?"

A little bit faster.

Maybe you like someone you met them and you like them

and you want to see them again next time,

So you say, "Can I see you again?"

Okay.

A little bit faster.

Okay.

Let's try a couple with 'could'.

دعونا نجرب زوجين مع "يمكن".

"Could I call you later?"

"هل يمكنني الاتصال بك لاحقا؟"

"Could I call you later?"

"هل يمكنني الاتصال بك لاحقا؟"

Again, remember, you can use all three, but we're doing 'could'.

"Could I borrow some money?"

Okay. You usually borrow money from a friend or somebody that you know,

so that's why it's better to say maybe 'can I' or 'could I'.

"Could I borrow some money?"

You want to leave, so you're asking if it's okay.

Okay and remember 'may I' is polite okay

you want to say that to someone who's a little bit more important,

maybe someone you don't know.

So "May I speak to mr. Kim?"

Maybe you called his office, okay, so you say,

And the last one -

"May I go to the bathroom?"

This one is maybe if you're asking a teacher.

هذا ربما إذا كنت تسأل المعلم.

Right? You're in class and you have to go, you can ask a teacher

يمين؟ أنت في الفصل وعليك الذهاب، يمكنك أن تسأل المعلم

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"هل يمكنني الذهاب إلى الحمام؟"

Again, 'can I' 'could' 'can' and 'could' are both okay.

مرة أخرى، "هل يمكنني" و"يمكنني" و"يمكن" و"يمكن" كلاهما مقبولان.

But maybe it's more polite....

ولكن ربما يكون الأمر أكثر تهذيبًا....

If you want to be polite, you should say,

إذا كنت تريد أن تكون مهذبًا، فيجب أن تقول:

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"هل يمكنني الذهاب إلى الحمام؟"

And I'm sure the teacher will like that better because you're being polite.

In this video we learned three ways to ask for permission.

Let’s first start with 'like and like to'

لنبدأ أولاً بـ "أعجبني وأعجبني" "

I like

and I like to'

وأحب أن"

First, let's look at the board for some examples.

أولاً، دعونا نلقي نظرة على اللوحة للحصول على بعض الأمثلة.

With 'I like', we have to put a  person, place or thing, right?

مع "أنا أحب"، علينا أن نضع شخصًا أو مكانًا أو شيئًا، أليس كذلك؟

So let's look.

لذلك دعونا ننظر.

'I like cookies.' Right, food is a thing.

'أنا أحب الكعك.' صحيح، الغذاء شيء.

So I could say, 'I like cookies'.

The next one.

English is a subject in school,

so that's another thing,

so I can also say, 'I like math',

The next one is, 'I like you.'

You is a person.

That's another thing.

Okay, so let's first try these  examples a little bit faster.

The second example is,

Now, we put a 'to' here.

الآن، وضعنا "إلى" هنا.

That means after, I have to put an activity.

وهذا يعني أنه بعد ذلك، لا بد لي من وضع نشاط.

Right? An activity.

يمين؟ نشاط.

For example, 'I like to dance.'

على سبيل المثال، "أنا أحب الرقص".

'I like to dance.'

'انا احب ان ارقص.'

But what I want you listen for is that 'to' becomes just like a 'tuh!'

لكن ما أريدك أن تستمع إليه هو أن تصبح كلمة "to" مثل "tuh!"

Now, It's ok to say, 'I like to dance.'

الآن، لا بأس أن تقول: "أنا أحب الرقص".

'I like to dance'.

'انا احب ان ارقص'.

That's okay but most native English speakers,

لا بأس بذلك، لكن معظم المتحدثين الأصليين للغة الإنجليزية،

will kind of get rid of the 'o' and say,

سيتخلصون نوعًا ما من حرف الـ "o" ويقولون:

'I like to dance.'

"أنا أحب الرقص".

'I like to dance.'

'انا احب ان ارقص.'

Here is the next one,

ها هي الجملة التالية،

'I like to sing.'

"أحب أن أغني".

'I like to sing.'

'أحب أن أغني.'

'I like to study.'

'احب أن أدرس.'

'I like to shop.'

'أحب أن أتسوق.'

Okay.

So, these are all personally things that I like to do.

لذا، هذه كلها أشياء أحب القيام بها شخصيًا.

Actually, I love to them.

في الواقع، أنا أحبهم.

But 'like to' and 'like' is a little more common.

لكن "أعجبني" و"أعجبني" أكثر شيوعًا بعض الشيء.

Okay.

So let's practice these  four examples one more time.

Okay, so now we're going to  move on to the expression,

So, if you look at the board,

I've changed 'I like' to 'I don’t like'.

Now, it’s the same.

At the end, I have to say a person, a place or thing.

So, let’s look at them together.

Remember, at the end of this,  we have to put an action,

something that we do, right.

So, we can say,

Remember, again the ‘to’.

Okay, so in this video we  talked about the expressions,

But before we close up, I'm going to

talk about 'I like' and I  'don’t like' one more time

because there are other  ways to say the same thing.

Instead of 'I like', I can  also say 'I enjoy' or 'I love'.

Remember, 'love' is very strong, right.

For example, 'I love cats'.

So, 'love' is stronger than 'like'.

The next part is,

'I don’t like'

I can also say, 'I dislike'.

ويمكنني أيضًا أن أقول "لا أحب".

Again, 'I dislike'.

For example, 'I dislike snakes'.

على سبيل المثال، "أنا لا أحب الثعابين".

Right? Or 'I hate snakes'.

Similar to 'love',

على غرار كلمة "الحب"، فإن

'hate' is a very strong way of saying I don’t like something.

كلمة "الكراهية" هي طريقة قوية جدًا للقول بأنني لا أحب شيئًا ما.

For example, 'I hate snakes'.

Right! 'I hate snakes.'

And in this video, we’re going to talk about a slang word that is “What’s up?”

وفي هذا الفيديو سنتحدث عن كلمة عامية وهي "ما الأمر؟"

So “What’s up?” can be used in 2 ways.

اذا ما الأمر؟" يمكن استخدامها بطريقتين.

The first way is a way to  greet people to say, 'hi'.

الطريقة الأولى هي طريقة لتحية الناس بقول "مرحبًا".

And actually when we say, “What’s up?”, it means “hi”, “how are you?”

وفي الواقع عندما نقول، "كيف حالك؟"، فهي تعني "مرحبًا"، "كيف حالك؟"

or “What are you doing these days?” right.

أو "ماذا تفعل هذه الأيام؟" يمين.

“What are you up to these days?”

"ماذا يشغل بالك هذة الأيام؟"

So that’s the first way we use “What’s up?”

هذه هي الطريقة الأولى التي نستخدم بها عبارة "ما الأمر؟"

The second way is to ask, “What’s wrong?” “Is something wrong?”

الطريقة الثانية هي أن نسأل: "ما المشكلة؟" "هل هناك خطأ؟"

“Is something bad happening to you?” right.

"هل يحدث لك شيء سيء؟" يمين.

So those are the two ways we can use ‘What’s up?’.

إذًا هاتان الطريقتان اللتان يمكننا من خلالهما استخدام عبارة "ما الأمر؟".

So let’s look at these example sentences.

لذلك دعونا ننظر إلى هذه الجمل سبيل المثال.

Here is the first one.

هذا هو أول واحد.

“Hey, Susie. What’s up?”

"مرحبًا سوزي. ما أخبارك؟"

So this person, 'A", is asking Susie,

“Hey Susie how are you?"

And here are some ways you can answer.

That means nothing special  is happening in my life.

I’m not doing much or maybe if they said,

"Hey Susie what’s up?"

Susie can say, “I’m going to the movies.”

She would just say what she’s doing. Right.

Another way, remember the second way, is to ask,

Now, this is important to people  like me who like shopping, right.

So, for example, I like  shopping especially for dresses.

So I might say the cost of  this dress is affordable.

Okay. This dress is affordable.

‘affordable’ means that this  dress is not too expensive.

I can buy this dress. So I would say this dress is affordable.

I can also say this dress is inexpensive. We all know what expensive is but we say

inexpensive so that's the opposite of expensive. 

غير مكلف، وهذا عكس الباهظ الثمن.

‘affordable’ and ‘inexpensive’  have very similar meanings. 

"بأسعار معقولة" و"غير مكلفة" لهما معاني متشابهة جدًا.

Again, I have enough money to buy this. It's not too expensive. 

مرة أخرى، لدي ما يكفي من المال لشراء هذا. انها ليست مكلفة للغاية.

Then, we have ‘cheap’. This dress is cheap. 

ثم، لدينا "رخيصة". هذا اللباس رخيص.

Now, ‘cheap’ is similar, it means it's not  expensive, but it's a little bit more negative.

If you say that something is cheap,  people may think that the quality

Okay. Now, let's look at the opposite.

Okay, so in this video, we learned that when  we want to describe the cost of something,

about how to use the word ‘borrow’ or ‘lend me’.

Well, when do we use this word?

Well, let me give you an example.

حسنًا، دعني أعطيك مثالاً.

Let's say that you're taking a test

لنفترض أنك تجري اختبارًا

and you look in your bag

ونظرت في حقيبتك

and uh-oh you forgot your pencil.

So what do you do?

You have to ask someone next  to you, or maybe a friend

And a mistake that a lot  of people make is they say,

The actual way to say it

Another way that you can say is,

Let's look at it again.

Alright, now, in the beginning  of the video, I taught you

to say, “Can I borrow… something”

But, actually,

You should use ‘May I’ when you're talking  to someone you don't know very well.

For those of you who have  a boyfriend or girlfriend.

And that expression is ‘to dump someone’. ‘to dump someone’

Well, what do you think that means? Well, for those of you who are in a relationship,

maybe, you're not happy. Hmm

Okay, so in this video we learned  the expression ‘to dump someone’.

I'm Esther and in this video we are going to talk about an important idiom 'hit on'.

Now, hit on doesn't mean to hit.

Right?

Hit means you punch someone or you use your hand to hurt someone.

So, that's not what it means.

'hit on' means well when a guy maybe likes a girl

So, let's look at these examples.

And that word is ‘pissed’ or ‘pissed off’.

وهذه الكلمة هي "غاضب" أو "غاضب".

Now, before I start, I want to tell you that ‘pissed’ can actually have several meanings.

الآن، قبل أن أبدأ، أريد أن أخبركم أن كلمة "غاضب" يمكن أن يكون لها في الواقع عدة معانٍ.

But today, we're going to focus on one meaning.

لكن اليوم، سنركز على معنى واحد.

And the meaning that I want  to focus on is ‘angry’.

Okay, so ‘pissed’ or ‘pissed off’ can mean very angry or maybe upset or annoyed.

Okay, so before I explain a little bit more, let's look at these example sentences.

The first one is, “I'm pissed.”

This just means “I'm angry” “I'm upset”

If you say "I'm piss" without the -ed,

So again, you must say “I'm pissed”

And let's look at the example  sentence one more time.

Okay, so we looked at a couple example sentences,

so just remember it's a very common  slang if you use it in America

So the word ‘lag’ is up here on the board. Now, the pronunciation - it's hard I know

but you have to try and practice ‘lag’

to describe an action that is very very slow. Now, my best friend is someone who lags a lot.

Whenever we want to do  something especially at night,

she takes almost two hours to get ready.

And in this video, I'm going to  talk about the word ‘pedestrian’.

A pedestrian is somebody who is walking.

المشاة هو الشخص الذي يمشي.

They might be walking on the street.

ربما يسيرون في الشارع.

Or on the sidewalk where all  the stores and restaurants are.

The sidewalk or pedestrians might be  crossing the street on a crosswalk.

That's the section with the  white lines where you have to go

if you want to go to the other side. So let's look at these example sentences.

So in Korea there are very many cars and drivers

And in this video, I'm going to teach you a very important English word.

Now, everybody in Korea should know this word because it gets this way every summer in Korea,

Well not just in the summer, but also in some other seasons.

Well, what does ‘humid’ mean?

Well again, ‘humid’ is used to describe weather.

It means that it's very wet and hot, right?

You know what I mean.

So even my best friend, she comes to Korea every year from Southern California,

But there are some other  ways to say the same thing.

Instead of ‘humid’,

For example, we can say, “Today is very muggy.”

Okay, ‘muggy’ means humid.

And in this video, we're going to talk about a slang word that comes from California.

وفي هذا الفيديو، سنتحدث عن كلمة عامية تأتي من كاليفورنيا.

That's where I'm from.

وهذا هو المكان الذي أتيت منه.

This slang word is actually  from Northern California,

هذه الكلمة العامية هي في الواقع من شمال كاليفورنيا،

in areas like San Francisco,  San Jose, and Oakland.

في مناطق مثل سان فرانسيسكو، وسان خوسيه، وأوكلاند.

And this word is the slang word ‘hella’.

وهذا "الكلمة هي الكلمة العامية "hella".

And it actually has two different meanings.

وهي في الواقع لها معنيان مختلفان.

So let's look at how it's used in some sentences.

لذلك دعونا نلقي نظرة على كيفية استخدامها في بعض الجمل.

Okay, so here's the first example sentence.

حسنًا، إليك الجملة النموذجية الأولى.

“This room is ‘hella’ hot.”

"هذه الغرفة 'hella' hot."

hmm… How is ‘hella’ used?

حسنًا... كيف يتم استخدام "hella"؟

It's used to mean the word  ‘really’ or ‘very’, right?

“This room is very hot.”

"هذه الغرفة ساخنة جدًا".

or “This room is really hot.”

أو "هذه الغرفة ساخنة حقًا."

In that case, we can say,  “This room is hella hot.”

So that's the first meaning.

Let's move on to the second meaning.

And here's another example sentence.

“There's hella food at home.”

That doesn't match the word ‘really’, right?

Let's look. There's really food at home.

It doesn't make sense actually.  In the second sentence,

هذا ليس له معنى في الواقع. في الجملة الثانية،

‘hella’ is used to mean there's ‘a lot of’

يتم استخدام كلمة "hella" لتعني أن هناك "الكثير من"

or there's ‘many’ things, right?

أو أن هناك "العديد" من الأشياء، أليس كذلك؟

So in this case, instead of saying,  “There's a lot of food at home,”

we can say, “There's hella food at home.”

So hurry and go home and eat some of that food.

Now under ‘hella’, I've written the word ‘hecka’.

And that's because some people feel uncomfortable using the word ‘hella’, right?

Because ‘hella’ has the word ‘hell’, right?

لأن كلمة "هيلا" تحتوي على كلمة "الجحيم"، أليس كذلك؟

And ‘hell’ can sometimes be used to express an emotion that's negative or very strong, right?

ويمكن أحيانًا استخدام "الجحيم" للتعبير عن مشاعر سلبية أو قوية جدًا، أليس كذلك؟

And in that case, people use ‘heck’, right?

وفي هذه الحالة، يستخدم الناس كلمة "هيك"، أليس كذلك؟

So again, instead of ‘hella’  some people say ‘hecka’.

So we can say, “There's hecka food at home.”

Again, it means the same thing  - there's a lot of food at home.

But if you don't want to use  ‘hella’, you can use this one.

And in the same way you can use ‘hecka’ to  substitute ‘hella’ in the first sentence as well.

But remember, again, this slang word ‘hella’ and ‘hecka’ is actually from Northern California,

so you might not hear it

or people might not understand what you mean

Okay, so those are the ways that we can use  ‘hella’ or ‘hecka’ in our everyday speech.

And that word is ‘monsoon season’.

What is ‘monsoon season’?

ما هو "موسم الرياح الموسمية"؟

Well, every summer  

حسنًا،

many foreigners come and they're surprised  by how much rain there is, right?

يأتي العديد من الأجانب كل صيف ويتفاجأون بكمية الأمطار الموجودة، أليس كذلك؟

In the summer, in Korea, for about one month,

في الصيف، في كوريا، لمدة شهر تقريبًا،

usually in July, there's a lot of rain, okay.

And in English we call that the ‘monsoon season’.

So it's very important for  Koreans to have a good umbrella.
