I'm Esther and in this video I'm going to teach you how to ask someone for permission

저는 Esther입니다. 이번 영상에서는 누군가에게 허락을 구하는 방법을 가르쳐 드리겠습니다.

Okay so before I teach you that,

좋습니다. 그걸 가르치기 전에

let's first talk about what permission means.

먼저 허가가 무엇인지부터 이야기해 보겠습니다.

Okay so...

좋아요...

When you want to ask someone if it's okay to do something, you're asking for permission.

누군가에게 뭔가를 해도 괜찮은지 물어보고 싶을 때, 허가를 구하는 것입니다.

Okay again, you want to do something, you don't know if it's okay, so you ask someone.

좋아, 또 뭔가 하고 싶은데 괜찮은지 모르니까 누군가에게 물어보세요.

For example, maybe you want to borrow something.

예를 들어, 무언가를 빌리고 싶을 수도 있습니다.

Then you should ask someone.

그러면 누군가에게 물어봐야 합니다.

If you just take it that's stealing, right?

그냥 가져가면 도둑질이겠죠?

So you have to ask.

그래서 물어봐야합니다.

Is it okay? Alright?

괜찮나요? 괜찮은?

So there are three ways to ask for permission in English.

그래서 영어로 허락을 구하는 방법은 세 가지가 있습니다.

The first way is to say, "Can I...?" "Can I...?" Okay.

첫 번째 방법은 "내가... 해도 될까요?"라고 말하는 것입니다. "해도 될까요...?" 좋아요.

The second way is "Could I...?" "Could I...?"

두 번째 방법은 "내가...?"입니다. "내가 할 수...?"

And the third way is, "May I...?" "May I...?" Okay.

세 번째 방법은 "제가...?"입니다. "나는 할 수있다...?" 좋아요.

So 'can I', 'could I', and 'may I' are all good

따라서 '내가 할 수 있을까', '내가 할 수 있을까', '내가 할 수 있을까'는 모두

ways to ask for permission.

허락을 구하는 좋은 방법입니다.

But the third one, 'may I', is more polite. Okay.

하지만 세 번째 'may I'는 좀 더 예의바른 표현이에요. 좋아요.

So if you want to ask somebody who has more power,

그러므로 더 큰 힘을 가진 사람,

maybe your parents, may be your teacher,

어쩌면 당신의 부모님이 당신의 선생님인지 묻고 싶다면

then you should say 'may I'.

'May I'라고 대답해야 합니다.

Maybe even to somebody that you don't know very well,

어쩌면 당신이 잘 모르는 누군가에게라도

it's better to say may I because again it's more polite.

May I라고 말하는 것이 더 정중하기 때문일 것입니다.

So let's look at these examples.

이제 이러한 예를 살펴보겠습니다. 좋아요, 그래서

Okay so I've written 'can I', 'could I', and 'may I'

칠판에 '해도 될까요', '해도 될까요', '내가 해도 될까요'라고 썼습니다

on the board.

Remember, after these three, you have to say a verb.

이 세 가지 뒤에는 동사를 말해야 한다는 것을 기억하세요.

Okay so let's look at the verbs.

좋아요, 그럼 동사를 살펴보겠습니다.

'help' 'see' 'have' 'call' 'borrow' 'go' 'speak' and 'go' again.

'도움말' '본다' '갖다' '전화하다' '빌리다' '가다' '말하다' 그리고 '가다' 다시.

Okay so I know I went through that a little bit quickly but

좋습니다. 제가 그 과정을 조금 빠르게 진행했다는 것은 알지만

we're going to go through it slowly now.

이제 천천히 진행하겠습니다.

Okay so here's what we'll do.

좋습니다. 이제 우리가 할 일은 다음과 같습니다.

I'm going to read and try to switch some around. Okay?

좀 읽고 바꿔보려고 합니다. 좋아요?

So... "Can I help you?"

그럼... "도와드릴까요?"

"Can I help you?"

Let's try that a little bit faster.

조금 더 빠르게 시도해 보겠습니다.

"Can I help you?"

"무엇을 도와 드릴까요?"

"Can I help you?"

Now remember, you can also say 'could I' and 'may I'.

이제 'can I'와 'may I'도 말할 수 있다는 점을 기억하세요.

For example, if you're walking through a department store,

예를 들어, 백화점을 걷고 있는데

and the salesperson comes to you,

판매원이 다가온다면

they would probably say, "May I help you?" because they want to be polite to the customer.

아마도 "도와드릴까요?"라고 말할 것입니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 고객에게 예의를 갖추기를 원하기 때문입니다.

So again, "May I help you?"

그래서 다시 "도와드릴까요?"

Okay.

좋아요.

"Can I see you again?"

A little bit faster.

Maybe you like someone you met them and you like them

and you want to see them again next time,

So you say, "Can I see you again?"

"Can I have some water?"

A little bit faster.

Okay.

Let's try a couple with 'could'.

'could'를 사용하여 몇 가지를 시도해 보겠습니다.

"Could I call you later?"

"나중에 전화해도 될까요?"

"Could I call you later?"

"나중에 전화해도 될까요?"

Again, remember, you can use all three, but we're doing 'could'.

다시 말하지만, 세 가지를 모두 사용할 수 있지만 우리는 '할 수 있다'는 것을 기억하세요.

"Could I call you later?"

"나중에 전화해도 될까요?"

"Could I borrow some money?"

"돈 좀 빌릴 수 있을까요?"

Okay. You usually borrow money from a friend or somebody that you know,

좋아요. 당신은 보통 친구나 아는 사람에게서 돈을 빌리

so that's why it's better to say maybe 'can I' or 'could I'.

므로 '내가 할 수 있을까' 또는 '내가 할 수 있을까'라고 말하는 것이 더 좋습니다.

"Could I borrow some money?"

"돈 좀 빌릴 수 있을까요?"

Okay.

좋아요.

"Could I go?"

"가도 될까요?"

You want to leave, so you're asking if it's okay.

당신은 떠나고 싶어서 괜찮은지 묻고 있습니다.

"Could I go?"

"가도 될까요?"

Okay and remember 'may I' is polite okay

알겠습니다. 'may I'는 예의바른 표현이라는 점을 기억하세요.

you want to say that to someone who's a little bit more important,

좀 더 중요한 사람,

maybe someone you don't know.

아마도 모르는 사람에게 이 말을 하고 싶을 수도 있습니다.

Again you would use 'may I'.

이번에도 'may I'를 사용하겠습니다.

So "May I speak to mr. Kim?"

그래서 "김 선생님과 통화할 수 있을까요?"

Maybe you called his office, okay, so you say,

어쩌면 그의 사무실에 전화해서

"May I speak to mr. Kim?"

"김 선생님과 통화해도 될까요?"라고 말했을 수도 있습니다.

And the last one -

그리고 마지막은 -

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"화장실에 가도 될까요?"

This one is maybe if you're asking a teacher.

아마도 선생님에게 물어보는 경우일 것입니다.

Right? You're in class and you have to go, you can ask a teacher

오른쪽? 수업 중이어서 가야 할 경우, 선생님에게

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"화장실에 가도 될까요?"라고 물어볼 수 있습니다.

Again, 'can I' 'could' 'can' and 'could' are both okay.

다시 말하지만, '나는 할 수 있다' '할 수 있다' '할 수 있다'와 '할 수 있다'는 모두 괜찮습니다.

But maybe it's more polite....

하지만 그게 더 예의일 수도 있겠네요....

If you want to be polite, you should say,

예의를 갖추려면

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"화장실에 가도 될까요?"라고 말해야 합니다.

And I'm sure the teacher will like that better because you're being polite.

그리고 나는 당신이 예의 바르게 행동하기 때문에 선생님이 그것을 더 좋아할 것이라고 확신합니다.

Okay. So...

Let’s first start with 'like and like to'

먼저 '좋아요와 좋아요'부터 시작하겠습니다. '

'와 '좋아요'

First, let's look at the board for some examples.

먼저, 몇 가지 예시를 위해 게시판을 살펴보겠습니다.

With 'I like', we have to put a  person, place or thing, right?

'좋아한다'에는 사람, 장소, 사물을 넣어야 하는 거겠죠?

So let's look.

그럼 살펴보자.

'I like cookies.' Right, food is a thing.

'나는 쿠키를 좋아해.' 그렇죠, 음식은 중요한 것입니다.

So I could say, 'I like cookies'.

그래서 '나는 쿠키를 좋아한다'고 말할 수 있었습니다.

'I like pizza.'

'나는 피자를 좋아해요.'

Okay.

좋아요.

The next one.

다음 것.

'I like English'

'나는 영어를 좋아한다'

English is a subject in school,

영어는 학교에서 하는 과목이기

so that's another thing,

때문에 그건 또 다른 얘기

so I can also say, 'I like math',

니까 '나는 수학을 좋아한다'라고 말할 수도 있겠죠

Right?

The next one is, 'I like you.'

다음은 '좋아해요' 입니다.

You is a person.

당신은 사람입니다.

I can say, 'I like him.'

나는 '그 사람을 좋아한다'고 말할 수 있다.

'I like Sally.'

'나는 샐리를 좋아해요.'

Right?

I can say a person.

오른쪽?

사람이라고 할 수 있습니다.

And, 'I like dogs.'

그리고 '나는 개를 좋아해요.'

That's another thing.

그것은 또 다른 것입니다.

I like dogs or for me,  personally, I like cats as well.

저는 개를 좋아하기도 하고, 개인적으로는 고양이도 좋아해요.

Okay, so let's first try these  examples a little bit faster.

좋습니다. 먼저 이 예제를 좀 더 빠르게 시도해 보겠습니다.

Now please try to follow with me.

The second example is,

I like to

I like to 입니다.

Now, we put a 'to' here.

이제 여기에 'to'를 입력합니다.

That means after, I have to put an activity.

즉, 그 후에 활동을 해야 한다는 뜻입니다.

Right? An activity.

오른쪽? 활동.

For example, 'I like to dance.'

예를 들어, '나는 춤추는 것을 좋아합니다.'

'I like to dance.'

'나는 춤추는 걸 좋아해요.'

But what I want you listen for is that 'to' becomes just like a 'tuh!'

하지만 여러분이 들어주셨으면 하는 점은 'to'가 'tuh!'와 같다는 것입니다.

Now, It's ok to say, 'I like to dance.'

이제는 '춤추는 걸 좋아해요'라고 말해도 괜찮습니다.

'I like to dance'.

'나는 춤추는 것을 좋아한다'.

That's okay but most native English speakers,

괜찮습니다. 하지만 대부분의 영어 원어민은

will kind of get rid of the 'o' and say,

'o'를 없애고

'I like to dance.'

'I like to dance'라고 말할 것입니다.

'I like to dance.'

'나는 춤추는 걸 좋아해요.'

Here is the next one,

다음은

'I like to sing.'

'노래하는 걸 좋아해요'입니다.

'I like to sing.'

'나는 노래하는 걸 좋아해요.'

'I like to study.'

'나는 공부하는 걸 좋아해요.'

'I like to shop.'

'나는 쇼핑을 좋아해요.'

Okay.

좋아요.

So, these are all personally things that I like to do.

그래서 이것들은 모두 제가 개인적으로 좋아하는 일들입니다.

Actually, I love to them.

사실 나는 그들을 좋아해요.

But 'like to' and 'like' is a little more common.

하지만 '좋아요'와 '좋아요'는 좀 더 일반적입니다.

So let's practice these  four examples one more time.

So, if you look at the board,

그래서 게시판을 보면

I've changed 'I like' to 'I don’t like'.

'좋아요'를 '좋아하지 않아요'로 바꿔놨어요.

Now, it’s the same.

이제는 동일합니다.

At the end, I have to say a person, a place or thing.

마지막에는 사람, 장소, 사물을 말해야 해요.

Okay.

So, let’s look at them together.

The second example is,

Remember, at the end of this,  we have to put an action,

. 기억하세요, 이 마지막에는 우리가 하는 행동, 즉 행동을 넣어야 합니다

something that we do, right.

So, we can say,

달리는 것을 좋아하지 않는다고 말할 수 있습니다.

Remember, again the ‘to’.

You can say, ‘I don’t like to’

Okay, so in this video we  talked about the expressions,

'I like', 'I like to', and 'I  don’t like', 'I don’t like to'.

'좋아요', '좋아요', '좋아요', '좋아요'라는 표현에 대해 이야기해 봤습니다.

But before we close up, I'm going to 

하지만 이야기를 마무리하기 전에

talk about 'I like' and I  'don’t like' one more time

'좋아한다'와 '좋아하지 않는다'에 대해 한 번 더 이야기 하겠습니다

because there are other  ways to say the same thing.

. 같은 말을 다른 방식으로 말할 수 있기 때문입니다.

Instead of 'I like', I can  also say 'I enjoy' or 'I love'.

'좋아해요' 대신 '즐거워요', '사랑해요'라고 말할 수도 있어요.

Remember, 'love' is very strong, right.

기억하세요, '사랑'은 매우 강합니다. 그렇죠.

For example, 'I love cats'.

예를 들어, '나는 고양이를 좋아해요'.

I also love dogs.

나는 또한 개를 좋아합니다.

Right?

오른쪽?

So, 'love' is stronger than 'like'.

그래서 '좋아요'보다 '좋아요'가 더 강해요.

Okay.

좋아요.

The next part is,

다음 부분은

'I don’t like'

'싫어요' 입니다

I can also say, 'I dislike'.

. '싫어요'라고도 말할 수 있어요.

Again, 'I dislike'.

이번에도 '싫어요'.

For example, 'I dislike snakes'.

예를 들어 '나는 뱀을 싫어한다'.

Right? Or 'I hate snakes'.

오른쪽? 또는 '나는 뱀을 싫어한다'.

Similar to 'love',

'love'와 마찬가지로

'hate' is a very strong way of saying I don’t like something.

'hate'는 내가 어떤 것을 좋아하지 않는다는 것을 표현하는 매우 강력한 표현입니다.

For example, 'I hate snakes'.

예를 들어, '나는 뱀이 싫어'.

Right! 'I hate snakes.'

오른쪽! '나는 뱀을 싫어해요.'

Okay.

And in this video, we’re going to talk about a slang word that is “What’s up?”

이번 영상에서는 "What's up?"이라는 속어에 대해 이야기해 보겠습니다.

So “What’s up?” can be used in 2 ways.

그래서 “무슨 일이야?” 2가지 방법으로 사용할 수 있습니다.

The first way is a way to  greet people to say, 'hi'.

첫 번째 방법은 '안녕하세요'라고 인사하는 방법이다.

And actually when we say, “What’s up?”, it means “hi”, “how are you?”

그리고 실제로 우리가 “What's up?”이라고 말할 때 이는 “안녕하세요”, “잘 지내세요?”를 의미합니다.

or “What are you doing these days?” right.

또는 “요즘 뭐하세요?” 오른쪽.

“What are you up to these days?”

“요즘 뭐하세요?”

So that’s the first way we use “What’s up?”

이것이 바로 "What's up?"을 사용하는 첫 번째 방법입니다.

The second way is to ask, “What’s wrong?” “Is something wrong?”

두 번째 방법은 “무슨 일이야?”라고 묻는 것입니다. "뭔가 잘못이다?"

“Is something bad happening to you?” right.

“뭔가 안 좋은 일이라도 생겼나요?” 오른쪽.

So those are the two ways we can use ‘What’s up?’.

이것이 'What's up?'을 사용할 수 있는 두 가지 방법입니다.

So let’s look at these example sentences.

그럼 이 예문들을 살펴보겠습니다.

Here is the first one.

여기 첫 번째가 있습니다.

“Hey, Susie. What’s up?”

“안녕, 수지. 무슨 일이야?"

So this person, 'A", is asking Susie,

그래서 이 사람 'A'는 Susie에게

“Hey Susie how are you?"

"Hey Susie 잘 지내?"

or “Hey, Susie. What are you up to these days?”

Now, this is important to people  like me who like shopping, right. 

자, 이것은 나처럼 쇼핑을 좋아하는 사람들에게 중요합니다.

So, for example, I like  shopping especially for dresses. 

예를 들어, 나는 특히 드레스 쇼핑을 좋아합니다.

So I might say the cost of  this dress is affordable. 

그래서 나는 이 드레스의 가격이 저렴하다고 말할 수 있습니다.

Okay. This dress is affordable. 

좋아요. 이 드레스는 저렴해요.

‘affordable’ means that this  dress is not too expensive. 

'affordable'은 이 드레스가 너무 비싸지 않다는 뜻입니다.

I have enough money and I can pay for this dress. I have enough money. 

나는 돈이 충분해서 이 드레스 값을 지불할 수 있어요. 나는 돈이 충분하다.

I can buy this dress. So I would say this dress is affordable.

I can also say this dress is inexpensive. We all know what expensive is but we say

inexpensive so that's the opposite of expensive.

‘affordable’ and ‘inexpensive’  have very similar meanings.

Now, ‘cheap’ is similar, it means it's not  expensive, but it's a little bit more negative.

It costs a lot of money, and too much money. Maybe, I don't want to buy it.

We can also say ‘overpriced’. This dress is overpriced.

That means the price is too high. So, again, I don't want to buy this dress,

about how to use the word ‘borrow’ or ‘lend me’.

'빌리다', '빌려주다'라는 단어를 어떻게 사용하는지 이야기해보겠습니다

Well, when do we use this word?

. 그러면 우리는 언제 이 단어를 사용합니까?

Well, let me give you an example.

자, 예를 들어보겠습니다.

Let's say that you're taking a test

당신이 시험을 보고 있는데

and you look in your bag

가방을 뒤졌는데

and uh-oh you forgot your pencil.

어, 연필을 잊어버렸다고 가정해 봅시다.

So what do you do?

그럼 당신은 무엇을 합니까?

You have to ask someone next  to you, or maybe a friend

옆에 있는 사람이나 친구에게

to let them use your pencil.

연필을 사용하게 해달라고 부탁해야 합니다.

And a mistake that a lot  of people make is they say,

그리고 많은 사람들이 저지르는 실수는

“Can you borrow me your pencil?”

“연필 좀 빌려주실 수 있나요?”라고 말하는 것입니다.

But that's actually wrong.

그러나 그것은 실제로 잘못된 것입니다.

Don't say that.

그렇게 말하지 마세요.

Don't say,

“연필 좀 빌려주실 수 있나요?”라고

“Can you borrow me your pencil?”

말하지 마세요.

The actual way to say it

실제 말하는 방법은

goes like this.

Let's look at an example sentence.

예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

“Can I borrow your pencil?”

“연필 좀 빌려도 될까요?”

That's the correct way to say it.

그렇게 말하는 것이 맞습니다.

“Can I borrow your pencil?

“연필 좀 빌려도 될까요?

Okay.

Another way that you can say is,

또 다른 방법으로는

“Can you lend me your pencil?”

“연필 좀 빌려주실 수 있나요?”라고 말할 수 있습니다.

Let's look at it again.

다시 살펴보겠습니다.

“Can you lend me your pencil?”

“연필 좀 빌려주실 수 있나요?”

Now, both of these ways are okay.

이제 이 두 가지 방법 모두 괜찮습니다.

And they're both correct and right,

둘 다 옳고 옳습니다.

but I think this one is a better way to say it.

하지만 저는 이것이 더 나은 표현이라고 생각합니다.

Again, let's remember it's not,

다시 한번 말씀드리지만,

‘Can you borrow me’, okay, don't say that.

Say this,

Alright, now, in the beginning  of the video, I taught you

자, 이제 영상 시작 부분에서

to say, “Can I borrow… something”

"... 좀 빌릴 수 있을까요?"

“Can I borrow your pencil?”

"연필 좀 빌릴 수 있을까요?"

But, actually,

라고 가르쳐 줬어요.

there's a more polite way to say this.

하지만 실제로 는 이렇게 말하는 더 정중한 방법이 있습니다.

And that is by saying,

그리고 그것은

“May I borrow something from you?”

“내가 당신에게서 뭔가를 빌려도 될까요?”라고 말하는 것입니다.

You should use ‘May I’ when you're talking  to someone you don't know very well.

잘 모르는 사람과 대화할 때는 'May I'를 사용해야 합니다.

Maybe it's a complete stranger,

전혀 모르는 사람일 수도 있고,

or maybe you know that person,

아는 사람일 수도

but you guys aren't really close friends.

있지만 실제로는 친한 친구가 아닐 수도 있습니다.

It's better to use ‘May I’.

'May I'를 사용하는 것이 더 좋습니다.

So again, “May I borrow something?”

그래서 또 “뭐 좀 빌릴 수 있을까요?”

For example,

예를 들어,

“May I borrow your pen?”

“펜을 빌려도 될까요?”

Or “May I borrow your phone?”

또는 “휴대폰을 빌려도 될까요?”

Or maybe like I said in the  example in the beginning,

아니면 처음에 예에서 말했듯이

“May I borrow your pencil or eraser?”

“연필이나 지우개를 빌려도 될까요?”

For those of you who have  a boyfriend or girlfriend. 

남자친구, 여자친구가 있으신 분들을 위해.

And that expression is ‘to dump someone’. ‘to dump someone’ 

그리고 그 표현은 '누군가를 버리다'입니다. '누군가를 버리다'

Well, what do you think that means? Well, for those of you who are in a relationship,  

자, 그게 무슨 뜻이라고 생각하세요? 글쎄요, 연애를 하고 있는 분들이라면

maybe, you're not happy. Hmm 

아마도 행복하지 않을 것입니다. 흠

Maybe you don't love that person anymore, or maybe  that person is just really horrible, really bad. 

어쩌면 당신은 그 사람을 더 이상 사랑하지 않을 수도 있고, 아니면 그 사람이 정말 끔찍하고, 정말 나쁜 것일 수도 있습니다.

So, what do you do? Well, you break up with them. 

그래서 당신은 무엇을 합니까? 글쎄, 당신은 그들과 헤어집니다.

Right, you say, “I don't  want to be with you anymore.”

And that's where the expression  comes in ‘to dump someone’.

So, when you tell your boyfriend or girlfriend, “I don't want to be with you anymore,” you

are dumping them. Okay, so let's look at these examples first.

This is a sad situation, right? Maybe my boyfriend didn't love me anymore,

or maybe I did something that made him angry. So he dumped me.

He doesn't want to be with me any longer.

Hmm, ‘I dumped him’.

The next sentence, ‘I dumped him’. This one is not so bad.

Maybe my boyfriend was really  bad, or he lied too much. 

어쩌면 내 남자 친구가 정말 나쁜 사람이었을 수도 있고, 거짓말을 너무 많이 했을 수도 있습니다.

So I kicked him. I got rid of him. 

그래서 나는 그를 걷어찼다. 나는 그를 제거했습니다.

I dumped him. Okay.

So, let's look at some more  example sentences together.

I'm Esther and in this video we are going to talk about an important idiom 'hit on'.

저는 Esther입니다. 이번 영상에서는 'hit on'이라는 중요한 관용어에 대해 이야기해보겠습니다.

Now, hit on doesn't mean to hit.

자, 때린다는 것은 때린다는 뜻이 아닙니다.

Right?

오른쪽?

Hit means you punch someone or you use your hand to hurt someone.

Hit는 누군가를 때리거나 손을 사용하여 누군가를 다치게 하는 것을 의미합니다.

So, that's not what it means.

그러니까 그런 뜻은 아닙니다.

'hit on' means well when a guy maybe likes a girl

'hit on'은 남자가 여자를 좋아하고

he sees someone and he thinks that girl is cute.

누군가를 보고 그 여자가 귀엽다고 생각할 때를 의미합니다.

He wants to know her better.

그는 그녀를 더 잘 알고 싶어합니다.

He wants to know her more.

그는 그녀를 더 알고 싶어합니다.

So, he might go to her and  ask for her phone number.

그래서 그는 그녀에게 가서 그녀의 전화번호를 물을 수도 있습니다.

Try to talk to her.

그녀와 대화를 시도해보세요.

That's hitting on.

그 일이 계속되고 있습니다.

That's hit on.

그게 맞았어.

Right?

He's hitting on her.

그 사람이 그녀를 때리고 있어요.

Okay?

So ah... yes a girl can hit on a guy as well.

그럼 아... 네, 여자도 남자를 때릴 수 있습니다.

Um… usually but it's usually  the guy that hits on the girl.

음… 보통은 그렇지만 여자를 때리는 사람은 대개 남자예요.

So, let's look at these examples.

이제 이러한 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

He hit on her.

그는 그녀를 때렸습니다.

He hit on her.

그는 그녀를 때렸습니다.

Again this means, he went to the girl and try to talk to her and know her better.

이는 그가 그 소녀에게 가서 그녀와 이야기를 나누고 그녀를 더 잘 알고자 노력했다는 것을 의미합니다.

So, maybe they can be a couple later or have a relationship.

그래서 어쩌면 그들은 나중에 커플이 되거나 관계를 가질 수도 있습니다.

Again, he hit on her.

또 그는 그녀를 때렸다.

The next sentence says she got hit on.

다음 문장은 그녀가 맞았다고 말합니다.

She got hit on.

This is not the same as this sentence.

She didn't hit on someone.

She got hit on which means that somebody hit on her.

So, don't get that confused.

That's a good some more  example sentences together.

Let's look at these examples.

But I think in Korea, a lot more Korean guys tend to hit on girls in public places like

the bus stop or on the street or maybe even a on the subway.

이번 영상에서는 속어에 대해 이야기해보겠습니다.

And that word is ‘pissed’ or ‘pissed off’.

그리고 그 단어는 '화났어' 또는 '화났어'입니다.

Now, before I start, I want to tell you that ‘pissed’ can actually have several meanings.

이제 시작하기 전에 'pissed'가 실제로 여러 가지 의미를 가질 수 있다는 점을 말씀드리고 싶습니다.

But today, we're going to focus on one meaning.

하지만 오늘은 한 가지 의미에 집중하겠습니다.

And the meaning that I want  to focus on is ‘angry’.

그리고 제가 주목하고 싶은 의미는 '화난다'입니다.

Okay, so ‘pissed’ or ‘pissed off’ can mean very angry or maybe upset or annoyed.

좋아요, 그래서 'pissed' 또는 'pissed off'는 매우 화가 났거나 속상하거나 짜증이 났음을 의미할 수 있습니다.

Okay, so before I explain a little bit more, let's look at these example sentences.

좋습니다. 조금 더 설명하기 전에 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

The first one is, “I'm pissed.”

첫 번째는 “나 화났어.”입니다.

This just means “I'm angry” “I'm upset”

이것은 단지 “화났어요” “화가 났어요”를 의미합니다

So again, “I'm pissed.”

. 그래서 다시 “나는 화가 났어요”를 의미합니다.

The next sentence is very similar.

다음 문장도 매우 비슷합니다.

“I'm pissed off.” “I'm pissed off.”

“화가 나네요.” “화가 나네요.”

Again, these two sentences have the same meaning.

다시 말하지만, 이 두 문장은 같은 의미를 가지고 있습니다.

They both mean ‘I'm very angry about something’

or ‘I'm very angry at somebody’.

Please also notice that we have  to say 'pissed' in the past tense.

또한 'pissed'는 과거형으로 말해야 한다는 점에 유의하세요.

We have to say it with -ed.

-ed로 말해야 합니다.

If you say "I'm piss" without the -ed,

-ed 없이 "I'm piss"라고 말하면

it actually has a different meaning.

실제로는 다른 의미를 갖습니다.

So again, you must say “I'm pissed”

그러므로 다시 한 번, 화가 났음을 보여주기 위해

or “I'm pissed off” to show that you're angry.

“I'm pissed” 또는 “I’m pissed off”라고 말해야 합니다

Here's the last sentence.

That means I get angry when he lies to me.

Let's make sure we also notice  the pronunciation “pissed off”.

And let's look at the example  sentence one more time.

And for all the women out there,  you understand what I mean, right?

When someone you care about or someone you love  lies to you, you get angry or pissed off, right?

So let's look at a few more  example sentences together.

“I was pissed off when the  other car cut in front of me.”

Okay, so we looked at a couple example sentences,

so just remember it's a very common  slang if you use it in America

Now ‘lag’ means to do something very slowly, or to be very slow, okay. 

이제 'lag'는 어떤 일을 매우 느리게 하거나 매우 느리게 한다는 뜻입니다.

So the word ‘lag’ is up here on the board. Now, the pronunciation - it's hard I know 

그래서 '지연'이라는 단어가 여기 칠판에 올라와 있습니다. 자, 발음이 - 어려운 건 알지만

but you have to try and practice ‘lag’ 

'lag' 'lag' 연습을 해봐야 합니다

‘lag’ Okay.

So let's look at these examples.

이제 이러한 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

“She's lagging .”

“그녀는 뒤쳐져 있어요.”

“She's lagging.”

This means she's taking a  long time to do something.

이것은 그녀가 어떤 일을 하는 데 오랜 시간이 걸린다는 것을 의미합니다.

She's doing something very slowly.

그녀는 뭔가를 아주 천천히 하고 있어요.

“She's lagging.”

“그녀는 뒤쳐져 있어요.”

The next one is, “Stop lagging.”

다음은 “지체를 멈추세요”입니다.

“Stop lagging.”

“그만 지체하세요.”

You're telling somebody hurry up. 

누군가에게 서둘러라고 말하고 있습니다.

Stop being slow. Okay. 

천천히 하지 마세요. 좋아요.

The next one is a very common problem. “My computer is lagging.”

다음은 매우 일반적인 문제입니다. “내 컴퓨터가 느려지고 있어요.”

“My computer is lagging.”

“내 컴퓨터가 느려지고 있어요.”

That means my computer is slow.

그건 내 컴퓨터가 느리다는 뜻이에요.

It's slow. I'm trying to do something  

느리다. 뭔가를 하려고 하는데

but it's lagging. It's slow.

늦어지고 있어요. 느리다.

And the last one is,

그리고 마지막은

“I have jet lag.”

“I have jet lag.”

“시차로 인한 피로가 있어요.”입니다.

“시차로 인한 피로가 있어요.”

You might hear this a lot especially  from people who are travelling.

특히 여행을 다니는 사람들에게서 이런 말을 많이 들을 수 있습니다.

So if you travel around the world,  maybe too a far away country

따라서 전 세계를 여행한다면 너무 먼 나라로 여행을 가면

that you're going to be changing time zones,

시간대를 변경하게 되어

so the time will be different,

시간이 달라지고

and you'll feel very tired,

매우 피곤할 것이며

your body will feel slow and tired,

몸도 느리고 피곤함을 느낄 것입니다

and your body is taking a long time  to adjust to the new time zone,

. 몸이 새로운 시간대에 적응하는 데 오랜 시간이 걸리고,

your body is slow to adjust,

몸이 적응하는 데 시간이 오래 걸리므

so you have to say, “I have jet lag.”

로 "시차로 인한 피로가 있습니다."라고 말해야 합니다.

And that can take a very long time.

So I always have to say to her “Stop lagging!

Hurry up! We're late! Stop lagging!” Okay.

So next time, if you have a friend or  somebody that's taking a very long time,

you can use the word ‘lag’ to say  ‘stop lagging’ ‘hurry up’ okay.

And in this video, I'm going to  talk about the word ‘pedestrian’. 

그리고 이번 영상에서는 '보행자'라는 단어에 대해 이야기해보겠습니다.

A pedestrian is somebody who is walking.

보행자는 걷고 있는 사람입니다.

They might be walking on the street.

그들은 거리를 걷고 있을 수도 있습니다.

Or on the sidewalk where all  the stores and restaurants are. 

아니면 모든 상점과 레스토랑이 있는 보도에서.

The sidewalk or pedestrians might be  crossing the street on a crosswalk. 

보도나 보행자가 횡단보도에서 길을 건너고 있을 수도 있습니다.

That's the section with the  white lines where you have to go  

반대편으로 가려면 가야 할

if you want to go to the other side. So let's look at these example sentences.

곳이 흰색 선으로 표시된 구간입니다 . 그럼 이 예문들을 살펴보겠습니다.

“Don't hit the pedestrian.”

“보행자를 치지 마세요.”

Okay.

So in Korea there are very many cars and drivers

and they have to be careful not to  hit the people that are walking.

The pedestrians.

보행자.

So "Don't hit the pedestrian."

그러니까 "보행자를 치지 마세요."

The pedestrian crosses the crosswalk.

보행자가 횡단보도를 건너고 있습니다.

Again, the crosswalk is where the white lines are.

다시 말하지만, 횡단보도는 흰색 선이 있는 곳입니다.

You have to walk there if you  want to go to the other side.

반대편으로 가려면 그곳으로 걸어가야 합니다.

The pedestrian crosses the crosswalk.

보행자가 횡단보도를 건너고 있습니다.

The last example is,

마지막 예는

"There are many pedestrians on the sidewalk."

"보도에 보행자가 많습니다."입니다.

Remember, ‘sidewalk’ is the area next to  the street where pedestrians should walk.

'인도'는 보행자가 걸어야 하는 거리 옆의 구역이라는 점을 기억하십시오.

It's safer, right?

그게 더 안전하지 않나요?

So "There are many pedestrians on the sidewalk."

그래서 "보도에 보행자가 많습니다."

Okay. And so that's how we use ‘pedestrian’.

And in this video, I'm going to teach you a very important English word.

그리고 이번 영상에서는 아주 중요한 영어 단어를 가르쳐 드릴게요.

Now, everybody in Korea should know this word because it gets this way every summer in Korea,

이제 한국에서는 여름마다 이런 말이 나오니까 대한민국 국민 모두가 이 단어를 알아야겠죠

right?

?

Well not just in the summer, but also in some other seasons.

여름뿐만 아니라 다른 계절에도 마찬가지입니다.

And that word that we're going  to learn today is ‘humid’.

그리고 오늘 우리가 배울 단어는 '습하다' 입니다.

Again, ‘humid’.

또 '습하다'.

So this word, you need to know it,

그러니까 이 단어도 알아야 하고,

and you especially need to mention this word

특히 외국인들에게 한국의 날씨를 설명할 때

when you describe Korea's  weather to any foreigners, 

이 단어를 꼭 언급해야 해요

Okay.

.

So if they ask “What's the weather like in Korea?”

그래서 그들이 “한국 날씨는 어때요?”라고 묻는다면

you have to say “humid”.

"습하다"라고 말해야 해요.

Well, what does ‘humid’ mean?

그럼 '습하다'는 무슨 뜻인가요?

Well again, ‘humid’ is used to describe weather.

다시 말씀드리지만, 'humid'는 날씨를 묘사하는 데 사용됩니다.

It means that it's very wet and hot, right?

많이 습하고 덥다는 뜻이죠?

You know what I mean.

무슨 말인지 아시겠죠?

So even my best friend, she comes to Korea every year from Southern California,

그래서 내 가장 친한 친구인 그녀도 매년

which is where I'm from,

내 고향인 남부 캘리포니아에서 한국으로 오고,

and she complains about this all the time.

항상 이것에 대해 불평합니다.

“It's so humid," right?

“너무 습해요.” 그렇죠?

“It's so hot and wet.”

“너무 덥고 습해요.”

And she complains about this  because where we're from,

그리고 그녀는 우리가 태어난 곳은

it's not like that. It's hot,  but it doesn't get very humid.

그렇지 않기 때문에 이것에 대해 불평합니다. 덥기는 하지만 별로 습하지 않습니다.

So let's look at the board for some examples on how to use the word.

그럼 단어 사용 방법에 대한 몇 가지 예를 칠판에서 살펴보겠습니다.

So here it is.

“Today is very humid.”

. “오늘은 매우 습해요. ”

“Today is very humid.”

So that's the word I want to teach you today. ‘humid’

But there are some other  ways to say the same thing.

하지만 같은 말을 다른 방식으로 말할 수도 있습니다.

Instead of ‘humid’,

'습하다' 대신에

we can say a couple of other words.

몇 가지 다른 단어를 말할 수 있습니다.

For example, we can say, “Today is very muggy.”

예를 들어, "오늘"이라고 말할 수 있습니다. 매우 후덥지근해요.”

“Today is very muggy.”

“오늘은 날씨가 많이 후덥지근해요.”

Okay, ‘muggy’ means humid.

좋아요, 'muggy'는 습하다는 뜻입니다.

Again, hot and wet.

다시 말하지만, 뜨겁고 습합니다.

We can also say, “Today is very sticky.”

또한 "오늘은 매우 끈적끈적합니다"라고 말할 수도 있습니다.

“Today is very sticky.”

“오늘은 정말 끈적끈적해요.” 그러니까

So ‘humid’, ‘muggy’, and ‘sticky’ all have the same meaning when you're describing

날씨를 말할 때 '습하다', '후덥지근하다', '끈적끈적하다'는 모두 같은 의미입니다

Now, I told you that where I'm from it's not humid, it's hot, but it's not humid,

자, 제가 있는 곳은 습하지도 않고 덥지도 않지만 습하지도 않다고 말씀드렸잖아요

so what's the opposite of humid?

. 습하다 반대말은 뭐죠?

That word is ‘dry’.

그 단어는 '건조하다'입니다.

So if it's not humid, I can  say, “Today is very dry.”

그래서 습하지 않다면 '오늘은 매우 건조해요'라고 말할 수 있어요.

“Today is very dry.”

“오늘은 매우 건조해요.”

Okay, well, let's look at some more example sentences together.

And in this video, we're going to talk about a slang word that comes from California.

이번 비디오에서 우리는 캘리포니아에서 유래한 속어에 대해 이야기할 것입니다.

That's where I'm from.

제가 태어난 곳이 바로 그곳입니다.

This slang word is actually  from Northern California,

이 속어는 실제로 캘리포니아 북부,

in areas like San Francisco,  San Jose, and Oakland.

샌프란시스코, 산호세, 오클랜드와 같은 지역에서 왔습니다.

And this word is the slang word ‘hella’.

그리고 이것은 word는 속어 'hella'입니다.

And it actually has two different meanings.

그리고 실제로는 두 가지 다른 의미를 가지고 있습니다.

So let's look at how it's used in some sentences.

그럼 이 단어가 일부 문장에서 어떻게 사용되는지 살펴보겠습니다.

Okay, so here's the first example sentence.

자, 첫 번째 예문은 다음과 같습니다.

“This room is ‘hella’ hot.”

"This room is 'hella' hot."

hmm… How is ‘hella’ used?

흠... 헬라(hella)는 어떻게 쓰나요?

It's used to mean the word  ‘really’ or ‘very’, right?

'정말', '매우'라는 뜻으로 쓰이죠?

“This room is very hot.”

"이 방은 아주 더워요."

or “This room is really hot.”

또는 “이 방은 정말 더워요.”

In that case, we can say,  “This room is hella hot.”

그렇다면 우리는 “이 방은 정말 더워요.”라고 말할 수 있습니다.

So that's the first meaning.

이것이 첫 번째 의미입니다.

Let's move on to the second meaning.

두 번째 의미로 넘어가겠습니다.

And here's another example sentence.

그리고 또 다른 예문이 있습니다.

“There's hella food at home.”

"집에 맛있는 음식이 있어요."

That doesn't match the word ‘really’, right?

'정말'이라는 단어와 일치하지 않는 거죠?

Let's look. There's really food at home.

한번 보자. 집에 정말 먹을 게 많아요.

It doesn't make sense actually.  In the second sentence,

실제로는 말이 되지 않습니다. 두 번째 문장에서

‘hella’ is used to mean there's ‘a lot of’

'hella'는 '많다'

or there's ‘many’ things, right?

, '많다'라는 뜻으로 사용됐죠?

So in this case, instead of saying,  “There's a lot of food at home,”

따라서 이 경우에는 “There's hella food at home”이라고 말하는 대신

we can say, “There's hella food at home.”

“There's hella food at home”이라고 말할 수 있습니다.

So hurry and go home and eat some of that food.

그러니 빨리 집에 가서 그 음식을 좀 먹어보세요.

Now under ‘hella’, I've written the word ‘hecka’.

이제 'hella' 아래에 'hecka'라는 단어를 썼습니다.

And that's because some people feel uncomfortable using the word ‘hella’, right?

그리고 일부 사람들은 '헬라'라는 단어를 사용하는 것을 불편하게 느끼기 때문이겠죠?

Because ‘hella’ has the word ‘hell’, right?

'헬라'에는 '지옥'이라는 단어가 있으니까요?

And ‘hell’ can sometimes be used to express an emotion that's negative or very strong, right?

그리고 '지옥'은 때때로 부정적이거나 매우 강한 감정을 표현하는 데 사용될 수도 있죠, 그렇죠?

And in that case, people use ‘heck’, right?

그러면 사람들은 'heck'을 사용하죠?

So again, instead of ‘hella’  some people say ‘hecka’.

그래서 다시, 'hella' 대신에 어떤 사람들은 'hecka'라고 말합니다.

mm-hmm

So we can say, “There's hecka food at home.”

mm-hmm

그러면 "집에 맛있는 음식이 많아요."라고 말할 수 있겠네요.

Again, it means the same thing  - there's a lot of food at home.

다시 말하지만, 같은 의미입니다. 집에 음식이 많습니다.

“There's hecka food at home.”

“집에 맛있는 음식이 많아요.”

But if you don't want to use  ‘hella’, you can use this one.

하지만 'hella'를 사용하고 싶지 않다면 이것을 사용하면 됩니다.

And in the same way you can use ‘hecka’ to  substitute ‘hella’ in the first sentence as well.

그리고 같은 방식으로 첫 번째 문장에서 'hella'를 대신하여 'hecka'를 사용할 수도 있습니다.

“This room is hecka hot.” Right?

“이 방은 정말 더워요.” 오른쪽?

“This room is hecka hot.”

“이 방은 정말 더워요.”

It's very hot in here but I  don't want to say ‘hella’.

여기는 매우 덥지만 '안녕하세요'라고 말하고 싶지 않습니다.

But remember, again, this slang word ‘hella’ and ‘hecka’ is actually from Northern California,

하지만 이 속어 'hella'와 'hecka'는 실제로 캘리포니아 북부에서 온 것이므로

so you might not hear it

뉴욕이나 영국과 같은 다른 곳에서 사용하면

or people might not understand what you mean 

듣지 못할 수도

if you use it in other places  such as New York or the UK.

있고 의미하는 바를 사람들이 이해하지 못할 수도 있다는 점을 다시 한 번 기억하세요.

So keep that in mind.

그러니 명심하세요.

Okay so let's look at a couple examples sentences.

Okay, so those are the ways that we can use  ‘hella’ or ‘hecka’ in our everyday speech.

But I want to remind you guys, one more time,

하지만 다시 한 번 말씀드리고 싶은 것은

this slang is used mostly in Northern California.

Now, for those of you who  like and enjoy hip-hop music.

이제 힙합 음악을 좋아하고 즐기는 분들을 위해.

Some hip-hop artists from that area,

e-40 및 Federation과 같은 해당 지역의 일부 힙합 아티스트는

such as e-40, and the Federation,  use the slang word in their music.

음악에 속어를 사용합니다.

They use ‘hella’ mostly.

주로 '헬라'를 사용합니다.

So next time you decide to  listen to some of their music,

그러니 다음에 그들의 음악을 듣기로 결정했다면,

I hope you guys can understand a little better

And that word is ‘monsoon season’.

. 그리고 그 단어는 '장마철'입니다.

What is ‘monsoon season’?

'장마철'이란 무엇인가요?

Well, every summer  

뭐, 여름마다

many foreigners come and they're surprised  by how much rain there is, right?

외국인들이 많이 오는데, 비가 너무 많이 내려서 놀라시죠?

In the summer, in Korea, for about one month,

여름에 한국에서는 한 달 정도,

usually in July, there's a lot of rain, okay.

보통 7월에 비가 많이 옵니다.

And in English we call that the ‘monsoon season’.

그리고 영어로는 이를 '몬순 시즌'이라고 부릅니다.

So it's very important for  Koreans to have a good umbrella.

그래서 한국인이 좋은 우산을 갖는 것은 매우 중요합니다.

Maybe some rain boots, right?

장화도 좀 있을 수도 있겠네요, 그렇죠?

But also it can cause some problems  for some businesses and homes  

하지만

if there's too much rain and flooding, right?

너무 많은 비와 홍수가 발생하면 일부 기업과 가정에 문제가 발생할 수도 있습니다. 그렇죠?

So if you see a foreigner, and  they ask about summer in Korea,

따라서 외국인을 만나 한국의 여름에 대해 묻는다면

it's very important that you remember  that you tell them about monsoon season.

장마철에 대해 이야기한다는 것을 기억하는 것이 매우 중요합니다.

Okay so let's look on the board  and look at this example sentence.

좋습니다. 그러면 칠판을 보고 이 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

“The monsoon season in Korea begins in summer.”

“한국의 장마철은 여름부터 시작됩니다.”

Right? I just talked about that.

오른쪽? 방금 그것에 대해 이야기했습니다.

Again, “The monsoon…”

Let's pronounce it together.

So “The monsoon season in Korea begins in summer.”

But again, nothing like the rain we see here.

Okay so that is something that  I'm still trying to get used to.
