I'm Esther and in this video I'm going to teach you how to ask someone for permission

আমি ইস্টার এবং এই ভিডিওতে আমি আপনাকে শেখাতে যাচ্ছি যে কীভাবে কাউকে অনুমতি চাইতে হয়

Okay so before I teach you that,

ঠিক আছে তাই আমি আপনাকে শেখানোর আগে,

let's first talk about what permission means.

প্রথমে অনুমতির অর্থ কী তা নিয়ে কথা বলি।

Okay so...

ঠিক আছে...

When you want to ask someone if it's okay to do something, you're asking for permission.

আপনি যখন কাউকে জিজ্ঞাসা করতে চান যে কিছু করা ঠিক আছে কিনা, আপনি অনুমতি চাইছেন।

Okay again, you want to do something, you don't know if it's okay, so you ask someone.

ঠিক আছে আবার, আপনি কিছু করতে চান, আপনি জানেন না এটি ঠিক আছে কিনা, তাই আপনি কাউকে জিজ্ঞাসা করুন।

For example, maybe you want to borrow something.

উদাহরণস্বরূপ, হয়তো আপনি কিছু ধার করতে চান।

Then you should ask someone.

If you just take it that's stealing, right?

So you have to ask.

Is it okay? Alright?

So there are three ways to ask for permission in English.

তাই ইংরেজিতে অনুমতি চাওয়ার তিনটি উপায় আছে।

The first way is to say, "Can I...?" "Can I...?" Okay.

প্রথম উপায় বলতে হয়, "আমি কি...?" "আমি কি পারি...?" ঠিক আছে.

The second way is "Could I...?" "Could I...?"

দ্বিতীয় উপায় হল "আমি কি...?" "আমি কি পারতাম...?"

And the third way is, "May I...?" "May I...?" Okay.

এবং তৃতীয় উপায় হল, "আমি...?" "আমি কি...?" ঠিক আছে.

So 'can I', 'could I', and 'may I' are all good

তাই 'আমি পারি', 'পারি পারি', এবং 'মেই আমি' সবই

ways to ask for permission.

অনুমতি চাওয়ার ভালো উপায়।

But the third one, 'may I', is more polite. Okay.

তবে তৃতীয়টি, 'মে আই', আরও ভদ্র। ঠিক আছে.

So if you want to ask somebody who has more power,

তাই আপনি যদি এমন কাউকে জিজ্ঞেস করতে চান যার ক্ষমতা বেশি,

maybe your parents, may be your teacher,

হয়তো আপনার বাবা-মা, আপনার শিক্ষক হতে পারেন,

then you should say 'may I'.

তাহলে আপনার বলা উচিত 'মেই আই'।

Maybe even to somebody that you don't know very well,

হয়তো এমন কাউকে যাকে আপনি খুব ভালোভাবে জানেন না,

it's better to say may I because again it's more polite.

এটা বলা ভালো কারণ আবার এটা আরও ভদ্র।

So let's look at these examples.

সুতরাং আসুন এই উদাহরণ তাকান.

Okay so I've written 'can I', 'could I', and 'may I'

ঠিক আছে তাই আমি বোর্ডে 'ক্যান আই', 'কুড আই' এবং 'মে আই' লিখেছি

on the board.

Remember, after these three, you have to say a verb.

মনে রাখবেন, এই তিনটির পরে আপনাকে একটি ক্রিয়া বলতে হবে।

Okay so let's look at the verbs.

ঠিক আছে তাই চলুন ক্রিয়া তাকান.

'help' 'see' 'have' 'call' 'borrow' 'go' 'speak' and 'go' again.

'সাহায্য' 'দেখুন' 'আছে' 'কল' 'ধার' 'যাও' 'বলুন' এবং আবার 'যাও'।

Okay so I know I went through that a little bit quickly but

ঠিক আছে তাই আমি জানি যে আমি একটু দ্রুততার মধ্যে দিয়ে গিয়েছিলাম কিন্তু

we're going to go through it slowly now.

Okay so here's what we'll do.

I'm going to read and try to switch some around. Okay?

So... "Can I help you?"

"Can I help you?"

Let's try that a little bit faster.

এর একটু দ্রুত চেষ্টা করা যাক.

"Can I help you?"

"আমি আপনাকে সাহায্য করতে পারি?"

"Can I help you?"

"আমি আপনাকে সাহায্য করতে পারি?"

Now remember, you can also say 'could I' and 'may I'.

এখন মনে রাখবেন, আপনি 'could I' এবং 'may I'ও বলতে পারেন।

For example, if you're walking through a department store,

উদাহরণস্বরূপ, আপনি যদি একটি ডিপার্টমেন্টাল স্টোরের মধ্য দিয়ে যাচ্ছেন,

and the salesperson comes to you,

they would probably say, "May I help you?" because they want to be polite to the customer.

So again, "May I help you?"

A little bit faster.

Maybe you like someone you met them and you like them

হতে পারে আপনি এমন কাউকে পছন্দ করেন যার সাথে আপনি দেখা করেন এবং আপনি তাদের পছন্দ করেন

and you want to see them again next time,

এবং আপনি তাদের পরের বার আবার দেখতে চান,

So you say, "Can I see you again?"

তাই আপনি বলেন, "আমি কি আপনাকে আবার দেখতে পারি?"

Okay.

"Can I have some water?"

"আমি কি পানি পেতে পারি?"

"Can I have some water?"

A little bit faster.

Okay.

ঠিক আছে.

Let's try a couple with 'could'.

এর 'পারি' দিয়ে একটি দম্পতি চেষ্টা করা যাক.

"Could I call you later?"

"আমি কি আপনাকে পরে কল করতে পারি?"

"Could I call you later?"

"আমি কি তোমাকে পরে ফোন করতে পারি?"

Again, remember, you can use all three, but we're doing 'could'.

আবার, মনে রাখবেন, আপনি তিনটিই ব্যবহার করতে পারেন, কিন্তু আমরা 'পারি' করছি।

"Could I call you later?"

"আমি কি তোমাকে পরে ফোন করতে পারি?"

"Could I borrow some money?"

"আমি কি কিছু টাকা ধার করতে পারি?"

Okay. You usually borrow money from a friend or somebody that you know,

ঠিক আছে. আপনি সাধারণত একজন বন্ধু বা আপনার পরিচিত কারো কাছ থেকে টাকা ধার করেন,

so that's why it's better to say maybe 'can I' or 'could I'.

তাই হয়তো 'আমি পারি' বা 'আমি পারি' বলাই ভালো।

"Could I borrow some money?"

"আমি কি কিছু টাকা ধার করতে পারি?"

Okay.

ঠিক আছে.

"Could I go?"

"আমি কি যেতে পারি?"

"Could I go?"

"আমি কি যেতে পারি?"

You want to leave, so you're asking if it's okay.

আপনি চলে যেতে চান, তাই আপনি এটা ঠিক আছে কিনা জিজ্ঞাসা করছেন.

"Could I go?"

"আমি কি যেতে পারি?"

Okay and remember 'may I' is polite okay

ঠিক আছে এবং মনে রাখবেন 'মেই আমি' ভদ্র ঠিক আছে

you want to say that to someone who's a little bit more important,

আপনি এমন কাউকে বলতে চান যিনি একটু বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ,

maybe someone you don't know.

হয়তো আপনি যাকে জানেন না।

Again you would use 'may I'.

আবার আপনি 'মেই আমি' ব্যবহার করবেন।

So "May I speak to mr. Kim?"

তাই "আমি কি মিঃ কিমের সাথে কথা বলতে পারি?"

Maybe you called his office, okay, so you say,

হয়তো আপনি তার অফিসে ফোন করেছেন, ঠিক আছে, তাই আপনি বলবেন,

"May I speak to mr. Kim?"

"আমি কি মিঃ কিমের সাথে কথা বলতে পারি?"

And the last one -

এবং শেষটি -

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"আমি কি বাথরুমে যেতে পারি?"

This one is maybe if you're asking a teacher.

আপনি যদি একজন শিক্ষককে জিজ্ঞাসা করেন তাহলে এটি হতে পারে।

Right? You're in class and you have to go, you can ask a teacher

ঠিক? আপনি ক্লাসে আছেন এবং আপনাকে যেতে হবে, আপনি একজন শিক্ষককে জিজ্ঞাসা করতে পারেন

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"আমি কি বাথরুমে যেতে পারি?"

Again, 'can I' 'could' 'can' and 'could' are both okay.

আবার, 'আমি পারি' 'পারি' 'পারি' এবং 'পারি' দুটোই ঠিক আছে।

But maybe it's more polite....

কিন্তু হয়তো এটা আরো ভদ্র....

If you want to be polite, you should say,

আপনি যদি ভদ্র হতে চান, তাহলে আপনাকে বলতে হবে,

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"আমি কি বাথরুমে যেতে পারি?"

And I'm sure the teacher will like that better because you're being polite.

এবং আমি নিশ্চিত যে শিক্ষক এটি আরও ভাল পছন্দ করবেন কারণ আপনি ভদ্র।

Okay. So...

In this video we learned three ways to ask for permission.

And in this video we're gonna talk  about some important English expression.

এবং এই ভিডিওতে আমরা কিছু গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ইংরেজি অভিব্যক্তি সম্পর্কে কথা বলব।

Let’s first start with 'like and like to'

চলুন প্রথমে 'লাইক এবং লাইক টু' দিয়ে শুরু করি

I like

আমি পছন্দ করি

and I like to'

এবং আমি পছন্দ করি'

First, let's look at the board for some examples.

প্রথমে, কিছু উদাহরণের জন্য বোর্ডটি দেখি।

With 'I like', we have to put a  person, place or thing, right?

'আমি পছন্দ করি' এর সাথে আমাদের একটি ব্যক্তি, স্থান বা জিনিস রাখতে হবে, তাই না?

So let's look.

তাই দেখা যাক.

'I like cookies.' Right, food is a thing.

'আমার বিস্কুট পছন্দ.' ঠিক আছে, খাদ্য একটি জিনিস.

So I could say, 'I like cookies'.

তাই আমি বলতে পারি, 'আমি কুকিজ পছন্দ করি'।

'I like pizza.'

'আমি পিজা পছন্দ করি.'

Okay.

ঠিক আছে.

The next one.

পরবর্তী এক.

'I like English'

'আমি ইংরেজি পছন্দ করি'

English is a subject in school,

স্কুলে ইংরেজি একটি বিষয়,

so that's another thing,

তাই এটি অন্য জিনিস,

so I can also say, 'I like math',

তাই আমিও বলতে পারি, 'আমি গণিত পছন্দ করি',

Right?

তাই না?

The next one is, 'I like you.'

পরেরটি হল, 'আমি তোমাকে পছন্দ করি।'

You is a person.

আপনি একজন ব্যক্তি।

I can say, 'I like him.'

আমি বলতে পারি, 'আমি তাকে পছন্দ করি।'

'I like Sally.'

'আমি স্যালি পছন্দ করি।'

Right?

I can say a person.

ঠিক?

আমি একজন ব্যক্তি বলতে পারি।

And, 'I like dogs.'

এবং, 'আমি কুকুর পছন্দ করি।'

That's another thing.

সেটা অন্য কথা।

I like dogs or for me,  personally, I like cats as well.

আমি কুকুর পছন্দ করি বা আমার জন্য, ব্যক্তিগতভাবে, আমি বিড়ালও পছন্দ করি।

Okay, so let's first try these  examples a little bit faster.

ঠিক আছে, তাই আসুন প্রথমে এই উদাহরণগুলি একটু দ্রুত চেষ্টা করি।

Now please try to follow with me.

'I like cookies.'

'আমার বিস্কুট পছন্দ.'

'I like English.'

'আমি ইংরেজি পছন্দ করি.'

'I like you.'

'আমি তোমাকে পছন্দ করি.'

'I like you.'

'আমি তোমাকে পছন্দ করি.'

And, 'I like dogs.'

এবং, 'আমি কুকুর পছন্দ করি।'

'I like dogs.'

'আমি কুকুর পছন্দ করি.'

Okay.

ঠিক আছে.

The second example is,

দ্বিতীয় উদাহরণ হল,

I like to

I like to

Now, we put a 'to' here.

Now, আমরা এখানে একটি 'to' রাখি।

That means after, I have to put an activity.

তার মানে পরে, আমি একটি কার্যকলাপ করতে হবে.

Right? An activity.

ঠিক? একটি কার্যকলাপ.

For example, 'I like to dance.'

যেমন, 'আমি নাচতে পছন্দ করি।'

'I like to dance.'

'আমি নাচতে পছন্দ করি.'

But what I want you listen for is that 'to' becomes just like a 'tuh!'

কিন্তু আমি আপনার কাছে যা শুনতে চাই তা হল 'টু' ঠিক 'তুহ'-এর মতো হয়ে যায়!

Now, It's ok to say, 'I like to dance.'

এখন, এটা বলা ঠিক, 'আমি নাচতে পছন্দ করি।'

'I like to dance'.

'আমি নাচতে পছন্দ করি'.

That's okay but most native English speakers,

এটা ঠিক আছে কিন্তু বেশিরভাগ নেটিভ ইংলিশ স্পিকাররা

will kind of get rid of the 'o' and say,

'ও' থেকে মুক্তি পাবে এবং বলবে,

'I like to dance.'

'আমি নাচতে পছন্দ করি।'

'I like to dance.'

'আমি নাচতে পছন্দ করি.'

Here is the next one,

এখানে পরেরটি,

'I like to sing.'

'আমি গান গাইতে পছন্দ করি।'

'I like to sing.'

'আমি গান গাইতে পছন্দ করি.'

'I like to study.'

'আমি পড়াশোনা করতে চাই.'

'I like to shop.'

'আমি কেনাকাটা করতে পছন্দ করি.'

Okay.

ঠিক আছে.

So, these are all personally things that I like to do.

সুতরাং, এগুলি ব্যক্তিগতভাবে এমন সমস্ত জিনিস যা আমি করতে পছন্দ করি।

Actually, I love to them.

আসলে, আমি তাদের ভালবাসি।

But 'like to' and 'like' is a little more common.

কিন্তু 'লাইক টু' এবং 'লাইক' একটু বেশিই প্রচলিত।

Okay.

So let's practice these  four examples one more time.

ঠিক আছে.

সুতরাং আসুন এই চারটি উদাহরণ আরও একবার অনুশীলন করি।

A little more quickly.

Okay, let's look at some more examples together.

Okay, so now we're going to  move on to the expression,

ঠিক আছে, তাই এখন আমরা অভিব্যক্তিতে যেতে যাচ্ছি,

'I don’t like'

'আমি পছন্দ করি না'

and 'I don’t like to.'

এবং 'আমি পছন্দ করি না।'

Okay.

ঠিক আছে.

So, if you look at the board,

সুতরাং, আপনি যদি বোর্ডটি দেখেন,

I've changed 'I like' to 'I don’t like'.

আমি 'আমি পছন্দ করি' থেকে 'আমি পছন্দ করি না' এ পরিবর্তন করেছি।

Now, it’s the same.

এখন, এটা একই.

At the end, I have to say a person, a place or thing.

শেষে, আমাকে বলতে হবে একজন ব্যক্তি, একটি স্থান বা জিনিস।

Okay.

ঠিক আছে.

So, let’s look at them together.

সুতরাং, আসুন একসঙ্গে তাদের তাকান.

I don’t like sushi.

আমি সুশি পছন্দ করি না

Let’s try it a little bit faster.

Okay.

The next one is,

পরেরটি হল,

I don’t like math.

Right.

We can say 'I hate' but 'I  don’t like' is more common.

ঠিক।

আমরা বলতে পারি 'আমি ঘৃণা করি' কিন্তু 'আমি পছন্দ করি না' বেশি সাধারণ।

I don’t like math.

আমি গণিত পছন্দ করি না।

Again a little faster.

আবার একটু দ্রুত।

I don’t like math.

আমি গণিত পছন্দ করি না।

I don’t like math.

আমি গণিত পছন্দ করি না।

The next one is,

পরেরটি হল,

I don’t like him.

আমি তাকে পছন্দ করি না।

I don’t like him.

আমি তাকে পছন্দ করি না।

I don’t like him.

আমি তাকে পছন্দ করি না।

And the last one,

আর শেষটা,

I don’t like snakes.

আমি সাপ পছন্দ করি না।

Right, a lot of women don’t like snakes.

ঠিক আছে, অনেক মহিলা সাপ পছন্দ করেন না।

I don’t like snakes.

আমি সাপ পছন্দ করি না।

I don’t like snakes.

আমি সাপ পছন্দ করি না।

Okay.

ঠিক আছে.

The second example is,

দ্বিতীয় উদাহরণ হল,

'I don’t like to'

'আমি করতে পছন্দ করি না'

'I don’t like to'

'আমি করতে পছন্দ করি না'

Remember, at the end of this,  we have to put an action,

মনে রাখবেন, এর শেষে, আমাদের একটি অ্যাকশন রাখতে হবে,

something that we do, right.

এমন কিছু যা আমরা করি, ঠিক।

So, we can say,

সুতরাং, আমরা বলতে পারি,

I don’t like to run.

আমি দৌড়াতে পছন্দ করি না।

I don’t like to run.

আমি দৌড়াতে পছন্দ করি না।

Remember, again the ‘to’.

মনে রাখবেন, আবার 'টু'।

You can say, ‘I don’t like to’

আপনি বলতে পারেন, 'আমি পছন্দ করি না'

or ‘I don’t like to’.

বা 'আমি পছন্দ করি না'।

I don’t like to run.

আমি দৌড়াতে পছন্দ করি না।

Let's try the next one.

এর পরেরটি চেষ্টা করা যাক।

I don’t like to study.

আমি পড়াশোনা করতে চাই না.

Okay.

ঠিক আছে.

After that,

এর পরে,

I don’t like to drink.

আমি পান করতে পছন্দ করি না।

A little faster.

একটু তাড়াতাড়ি.

আমি পান করতে পছন্দ করি না।

And the last one is,

আর শেষটা হল,

I don’t like to fight.

আমি যুদ্ধ করতে পছন্দ করি না।

Right.

ঠিক।

It can get a little bit scary, right.

এটা একটু ভীতিকর হতে পারে, ঠিক।

I don’t like to fight.

আমি যুদ্ধ করতে পছন্দ করি না।

I don’t like to fight.

আমি যুদ্ধ করতে পছন্দ করি না।

Let's look at some more examples together.

Okay, so in this video we  talked about the expressions,

ঠিক আছে, তাই এই ভিডিওতে আমরা

'I like', 'I like to', and 'I  don’t like', 'I don’t like to'.

And in this video, we’re going to talk about a slang word that is “What’s up?”

So “What’s up?” can be used in 2 ways.

The first way is a way to  greet people to say, 'hi'.

প্রথম উপায় হল মানুষকে অভিবাদন জানানোর একটি উপায়, 'হাই'।

And actually when we say, “What’s up?”, it means “hi”, “how are you?”

or “What are you doing these days?” right.

So that’s the first way we use “What’s up?”

So let’s look at these example sentences.

So this person, 'A", is asking Susie,

Another way, remember the second way, is to ask,

“What’s wrong?” “Is everything okay?”

So here is how we would use it.

It’s almost like what’s and up are blended, like they are connected.

And I also want to mention

that some people say, “What up?”

mmm, so first of all, let's talk about the meaning of these words.

And in this video, we're going to talk about  how to describe the cost or price of something.

Now, this is important to people  like me who like shopping, right. 

এখন, এটি আমার মতো লোকেদের জন্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ যারা কেনাকাটা পছন্দ করেন, ঠিক।

So, for example, I like  shopping especially for dresses. 

সুতরাং, উদাহরণস্বরূপ, আমি বিশেষ করে পোশাকের জন্য কেনাকাটা করতে পছন্দ করি।

So I might say the cost of  this dress is affordable. 

তাই আমি বলতে পারি এই পোশাকের দাম সাধ্যের মধ্যে।

Okay. This dress is affordable.

‘affordable’ means that this  dress is not too expensive.

I have enough money and I can pay for this dress. I have enough money.

I can buy this dress. So I would say this dress is affordable. 

আমি এই ড্রেস কিনতে পারেন. তাই আমি বলব এই পোশাকটি সাশ্রয়ী।

I can also say this dress is inexpensive. We all know what expensive is but we say  

আমি বলতে পারি এই পোশাকটি সস্তা। আমরা সবাই জানি দামি জিনিস কি তবে আমরা বলি

inexpensive so that's the opposite of expensive. 

সস্তা তাই দামের বিপরীত।

‘affordable’ and ‘inexpensive’  have very similar meanings. 

'সাশ্রয়ী' এবং 'সাশ্রয়ী' এর অর্থ একই রকম।

Again, I have enough money to buy this. It's not too expensive. 

আবার, এই কেনার জন্য আমার কাছে যথেষ্ট টাকা আছে। এটা খুব ব্যয়বহুল না.

Then, we have ‘cheap’. This dress is cheap. 

তারপর, আমরা 'সস্তা' আছে. এই পোশাক সস্তা।

Now, ‘cheap’ is similar, it means it's not  expensive, but it's a little bit more negative.

If you say that something is cheap,  people may think that the quality

Okay. Now, let's look at the opposite.

The opposite of these words is ‘expensive’. This dress is expensive.

It costs a lot of money, and too much money. Maybe, I don't want to buy it.

We can also say ‘overpriced’. This dress is overpriced.

That means the price is too high. So, again, I don't want to buy this dress,

Okay, so in this video, we learned that when  we want to describe the cost of something,

ঠিক আছে, তাই এই ভিডিওতে, আমরা শিখেছি যে যখন আমরা কোনো কিছুর দাম বর্ণনা করতে চাই,

as not too expensive,

যেমন খুব বেশি ব্যয়বহুল নয়,

we say ‘affordable’.

আমরা বলি 'সাশ্রয়ী'৷

Okay. Something is  

ঠিক আছে. খুব ব্যয়বহুল না হলে

affordable if it's not too expensive. If I can buy it with the money I have.

On the other hand, if something is not affordable,

if the cost is very high,

we say ‘expensive’ or ‘overpriced’.

For me, I think some brands like  H&M and Forever 21 are affordable.

Some people don't think this way. They think it's cheap.

about how to use the word ‘borrow’ or ‘lend me’.

Well, when do we use this word?

আচ্ছা, আমরা এই শব্দটি কখন ব্যবহার করব?

Well, let me give you an example.

আচ্ছা, একটা উদাহরণ দিই।

Let's say that you're taking a test

ধরা যাক যে আপনি একটি পরীক্ষা দিচ্ছেন

and you look in your bag

এবং আপনি আপনার ব্যাগে তাকান

and uh-oh you forgot your pencil.

এবং উহ-ওহ আপনি আপনার পেন্সিল ভুলে গেছেন।

So what do you do?

তো তুমি কি কর?

You have to ask someone next  to you, or maybe a friend

আপনাকে আপনার পাশের কাউকে বলতে হবে, অথবা হয়ত কোনো বন্ধুকে

to let them use your pencil.

আপনার পেন্সিল ব্যবহার করতে দিতে হবে।

And a mistake that a lot  of people make is they say,

“Can you borrow me your pencil?”

"আপনি কি আমাকে আপনার পেন্সিল ধার করতে পারেন?"

But that's actually wrong.

কিন্তু যে আসলে ভুল.

Don't say that.

Don't say,

বলবেন না,

“Can you borrow me your pencil?”

"আপনি কি আমাকে আপনার পেন্সিল ধার দিতে পারেন?"

The actual way to say it

বলার আসল উপায়

goes like this.

এভাবে যায়।

Let's look at an example sentence.

আসুন একটি উদাহরণ বাক্য তাকান.

“Can I borrow your pencil?”

"আমি কি তোমার পেন্সিল ধার নিতে পারি?"

That's the correct way to say it.

এটা বলার সঠিক উপায়।

“Can I borrow your pencil?

"আমি কি তোমার পেন্সিল ধার নিতে পারি?

Okay.

ঠিক আছে.

Another way that you can say is,

আরেকটি উপায় যা আপনি বলতে পারেন,

“Can you lend me your pencil?”

"আপনি কি আমাকে আপনার পেন্সিল ধার দিতে পারেন?"

Let's look at it again.

এর আবার তাকান.

“Can you lend me your pencil?”

"আপনি কি আমাকে আপনার পেন্সিল ধার দিতে পারেন?"

Now, both of these ways are okay.

এখন, এই উভয় উপায় ঠিক আছে.

And they're both correct and right,

but I think this one is a better way to say it.

Again, let's remember it's not,

Alright, now, in the beginning  of the video, I taught you

ঠিক আছে, এখন, ভিডিওর শুরুতে, আমি আপনাকে

to say, “Can I borrow… something”

বলতে শিখিয়েছি, "আমি কি ধার করতে পারি... কিছু"

“Can I borrow your pencil?”

But, actually,

there's a more polite way to say this.

And that is by saying,

“May I borrow something from you?”

You should use ‘May I’ when you're talking  to someone you don't know very well.

Maybe it's a complete stranger,

but you guys aren't really close friends.

It's better to use ‘May I’.

So again, “May I borrow something?”

For example,

“May I borrow your pen?”

"আমি কি আপনার কলম ধার নিতে পারি?"

Or “May I borrow your phone?”

Or maybe like I said in the  example in the beginning,

And that expression is ‘to dump someone’. ‘to dump someone’

Well, what do you think that means? Well, for those of you who are in a relationship,  

আচ্ছা, আপনি কি মনে করেন এর মানে কি? ঠিক আছে, আপনি যারা একটি সম্পর্কে আছেন তাদের জন্য,

maybe, you're not happy. Hmm 

সম্ভবত, আপনি খুশি নন। হুম

Maybe you don't love that person anymore, or maybe  that person is just really horrible, really bad. 

হয়তো আপনি সেই ব্যক্তিকে আর ভালোবাসেন না, অথবা হয়তো সেই ব্যক্তিটি সত্যিই ভয়ানক, সত্যিই খারাপ।

So, what do you do? Well, you break up with them.

Right, you say, “I don't  want to be with you anymore.” 

ঠিক, আপনি বলছেন, "আমি আর আপনার সাথে থাকতে চাই না।"

And that's where the expression  comes in ‘to dump someone’. 

এবং সেখানেই অভিব্যক্তিটি আসে 'কাউকে ডাম্প করতে'।

So, when you tell your boyfriend or girlfriend, “I don't want to be with you anymore,” you

are dumping them. Okay, so let's look at these examples first.

or maybe I did something that made him angry. So he dumped me.

He doesn't want to be with me any longer.

Hmm, ‘I dumped him’.

The next sentence, ‘I dumped him’. This one is not so bad. 

পরের বাক্য, 'আমি তাকে ফেলে দিয়েছি'। এই এক তাই খারাপ না.

Maybe my boyfriend was really  bad, or he lied too much. 

হয়তো আমার প্রেমিক সত্যিই খারাপ ছিল, অথবা সে খুব বেশি মিথ্যা বলেছিল।

So I kicked him. I got rid of him. 

তাই তাকে লাথি মেরেছি। আমি তার থেকে মুক্তি পেয়েছি।

I dumped him. Okay. 

আমি তাকে ফেলে দিলাম। ঠিক আছে.

So, let's look at some more  example sentences together. 

সুতরাং, আসুন একসাথে আরও কিছু উদাহরণ বাক্য দেখি।

‘She dumped him because he lied to her.’ 

'সে তাকে ফেলে দিয়েছে কারণ সে তাকে মিথ্যা বলেছে।'

Okay, so in this video we learned  the expression ‘to dump someone’.

Remember, you can dump a bad boyfriend or  girlfriend, but they can also dump you.

Now, hit on doesn't mean to hit.

এখন, আঘাত করা মানে আঘাত করা নয়।

Right?

ঠিক?

Hit means you punch someone or you use your hand to hurt someone.

আঘাত মানে আপনি কাউকে ঘুষি মারেন বা কাউকে আঘাত করতে আপনার হাত ব্যবহার করেন।

So, that's not what it means.

সুতরাং, যে এটা মানে কি না.

'hit on' means well when a guy maybe likes a girl

'হিট অন' এর অর্থ হল, যখন একজন লোক একটি মেয়েকে পছন্দ করে তখন

he sees someone and he thinks that girl is cute.

He wants to know her better.

And that word is ‘pissed’ or ‘pissed off’.

আর সেই শব্দটি হল 'পিসড' বা 'পিসড অফ'।

Now, before I start, I want to tell you that ‘pissed’ can actually have several meanings.

এখন, আমি শুরু করার আগে, আমি আপনাকে বলতে চাই যে 'বিরক্ত' এর আসলে বেশ কয়েকটি অর্থ থাকতে পারে।

But today, we're going to focus on one meaning.

And the meaning that I want  to focus on is ‘angry’.

Okay, so ‘pissed’ or ‘pissed off’ can mean very angry or maybe upset or annoyed.

ঠিক আছে, তাই 'বিরক্ত' বা 'বিরক্ত' মানে খুব রাগান্বিত বা বিরক্ত বা বিরক্ত হতে পারে।

Okay, so before I explain a little bit more, let's look at these example sentences.

ঠিক আছে, তাই আমি একটু ব্যাখ্যা করার আগে, আসুন এই উদাহরণ বাক্যগুলি দেখুন।

The first one is, “I'm pissed.”

প্রথমটি হল, "আমি বিরক্ত।"

This just means “I'm angry” “I'm upset”

এর মানে শুধু "আমি রাগান্বিত" "আমি বিরক্ত"

So again, “I'm pissed.”

তাই আবার, "আমি বিরক্ত।"

The next sentence is very similar.

পরের বাক্যটি খুবই অনুরূপ।

“I'm pissed off.” “I'm pissed off.”

"আমি বিরক্ত।" "আমি বিরক্ত।"

Again, these two sentences have the same meaning.

আবার, এই দুটি বাক্যের একই অর্থ আছে।

They both mean ‘I'm very angry about something’

তারা উভয় মানে 'আমি কিছু সম্পর্কে খুব রাগান্বিত'

or ‘I'm very angry at somebody’.

বা 'আমি কারো উপর খুব রাগান্বিত'।

Please also notice that we have  to say 'pissed' in the past tense.

অনুগ্রহ করে এটিও লক্ষ্য করুন যে আমাদের অতীত কালের 'ক্ষিপ্ত' বলতে হবে।

We have to say it with -ed.

আমরা -ed সঙ্গে এটা বলতে হবে.

If you say "I'm piss" without the -ed,

আপনি যদি -ed ছাড়া "আমি প্রস্রাব করছি" বলেন,

it actually has a different meaning.

আসলে এর একটি ভিন্ন অর্থ আছে।

So again, you must say “I'm pissed”

তাই আবার, আপনি যে রাগান্বিত তা দেখানোর জন্য আপনাকে অবশ্যই "আমি বিরক্ত"

or “I'm pissed off” to show that you're angry.

বা "আমি বিরক্ত" বলতে হবে।

Okay.

Here's the last sentence.

“I get pissed off when he lies to me.”

"সে আমার সাথে মিথ্যা বললে আমি বিরক্ত হই।"

That means I get angry when he lies to me.

তার মানে সে আমার সাথে মিথ্যা বললে আমি রেগে যাই।

Again, “I get pissed off when he lies to me.”

আবার, "সে আমার সাথে মিথ্যা বললে আমি বিরক্ত হই।"

Let's make sure we also notice  the pronunciation “pissed off”.

আসুন নিশ্চিত করি যে আমরা "পিসড অফ" উচ্চারণটিও লক্ষ্য করছি।

And let's look at the example  sentence one more time.

And for all the women out there,  you understand what I mean, right?

So let's look at a few more  example sentences together.

Okay, so we looked at a couple example sentences,

And in this video, I want to talk  with you about the word ‘lag’.

Now ‘lag’ means to do something very slowly, or to be very slow, okay. 

এখন 'ল্যাগ' মানে খুব ধীরে কিছু করা, বা খুব ধীরে, ঠিক আছে।

So the word ‘lag’ is up here on the board. Now, the pronunciation - it's hard I know 

সুতরাং 'ল্যাগ' শব্দটি এখানে বোর্ডে রয়েছে। এখন, উচ্চারণ - এটা কঠিন আমি জানি

but you have to try and practice ‘lag’

So let's look at these examples.

You're telling somebody hurry up. 

তুমি কাউকে তাড়াতাড়ি বলছো।

Stop being slow. Okay.

The next one is a very common problem. “My computer is lagging.”

পরেরটি একটি খুব সাধারণ সমস্যা। "আমার কম্পিউটার পিছিয়ে আছে।"

“My computer is lagging.”

"আমার কম্পিউটার পিছিয়ে আছে।"

That means my computer is slow.

তার মানে আমার কম্পিউটার স্লো।

It's slow. I'm trying to do something  

এটা ধীরগতির. আমি কিছু করার চেষ্টা করছি

but it's lagging. It's slow.

কিন্তু এটা পিছিয়ে যাচ্ছে। এটা ধীরগতির.

And the last one is,

এবং শেষটি হল,

“I have jet lag.”

“I have jet lag.”

"আমার জেট ল্যাগ আছে।"

"আমার জেট ল্যাগ আছে।"

You might hear this a lot especially  from people who are travelling.

বিশেষ করে যারা ভ্রমণ করছেন তাদের কাছ থেকে আপনি এটি অনেক শুনে থাকতে পারেন।

So if you travel around the world,  maybe too a far away country

তাই আপনি যদি সারা বিশ্বে ভ্রমণ করেন, হয়তো অনেক দূরে একটি দেশ

that you're going to be changing time zones,

যেখানে আপনি সময় অঞ্চল পরিবর্তন করতে যাচ্ছেন,

so the time will be different,

and you'll feel very tired,

your body will feel slow and tired,

and your body is taking a long time  to adjust to the new time zone,

so you have to say, “I have jet lag.”

Okay. Let's look at some more examples together.

Okay.

So in this video we learned  that we use the word ‘lag’

to describe an action that is very very slow. Now, my best friend is someone who lags a lot.

একটি ক্রিয়া বর্ণনা করতে যা খুব ধীর গতির। এখন, আমার সেরা বন্ধু এমন একজন যে অনেক পিছিয়ে থাকে।

Whenever we want to do  something especially at night,

যখনই আমরা বিশেষ করে রাতে কিছু করতে চাই, তখন

she takes almost two hours to get ready.

সে প্রস্তুত হতে প্রায় দুই ঘণ্টা সময় নেয়।

She has to wash her hair or take  a shower then put on her makeup,

তাকে তার চুল ধুতে হবে বা গোসল করতে হবে তারপর তার মেকআপ লাগাতে হবে,

you know decide what to wear.

আপনি কী পরবেন তা আপনি জানেন।

And that can take a very long time.

এবং এটি একটি খুব দীর্ঘ সময় নিতে পারে.

So I always have to say to her “Stop lagging!

তাই আমি সবসময় তাকে বলতে হবে "পিছিয়ে থাকা বন্ধ করুন!

Hurry up! We're late! Stop lagging!” Okay.

So next time, if you have a friend or  somebody that's taking a very long time,

you can use the word ‘lag’ to say  ‘stop lagging’ ‘hurry up’ okay.

A pedestrian is somebody who is walking.

পথচারী হল এমন কেউ যে হাঁটছে।

They might be walking on the street.

তারা হয়তো রাস্তায় হাঁটছে।

Or on the sidewalk where all  the stores and restaurants are. 

কিংবা ফুটপাতে যেখানে সব দোকান ও রেস্তোরাঁ আছে।

The sidewalk or pedestrians might be  crossing the street on a crosswalk. 

ফুটপাথ বা পথচারীরা হয়তো রাস্তা পার হচ্ছেন ক্রসওয়াকে।

That's the section with the  white lines where you have to go  

এটি সাদা রেখা সহ বিভাগ যেখানে আপনি

if you want to go to the other side. So let's look at these example sentences.

যদি অন্য দিকে যেতে চান তবে আপনাকে যেতে হবে। সুতরাং আসুন এই উদাহরণ বাক্য তাকান.

“Don't hit the pedestrian.”

Okay.

So in Korea there are very many cars and drivers

and they have to be careful not to  hit the people that are walking.

The pedestrians.

The pedestrian crosses the crosswalk.

পথচারী ক্রসওয়াক অতিক্রম করে।

Again, the crosswalk is where the white lines are.

আবার, ক্রসওয়াক হল যেখানে সাদা রেখা রয়েছে।

You have to walk there if you  want to go to the other side.

ওপারে যেতে হলে ওখানে হেঁটে যেতে হবে।

The pedestrian crosses the crosswalk.

পথচারী ক্রসওয়াক অতিক্রম করে।

The last example is,

শেষ উদাহরণ হল,

"There are many pedestrians on the sidewalk."

"ফুটপাতে অনেক পথচারী আছে।"

Remember, ‘sidewalk’ is the area next to  the street where pedestrians should walk.

মনে রাখবেন, 'ফুটপাত' হল রাস্তার পাশের এলাকা যেখানে পথচারীদের হাঁটতে হবে।

It's safer, right?

এটা নিরাপদ, তাই না?

So "There are many pedestrians on the sidewalk."

Okay. And so that's how we use ‘pedestrian’.

Remember, it means somebody who's walking.

Now, everybody in Korea should know this word because it gets this way every summer in Korea,

Well not just in the summer, but also in some other seasons.

And that word that we're going  to learn today is ‘humid’.

So this word, you need to know it,

সুতরাং এই শব্দটি, আপনার এটি জানা দরকার,

and you especially need to mention this word

when you describe Korea's  weather to any foreigners,

Well, what does ‘humid’ mean?

Well again, ‘humid’ is used to describe weather.

It means that it's very wet and hot, right?

এর মানে এটা খুব ভিজা এবং গরম, তাই না?

You know what I mean.

আপনি জানেন আমি কি বলতে চাচ্ছি.

So even my best friend, she comes to Korea every year from Southern California,

But there are some other  ways to say the same thing.

Instead of ‘humid’,

we can say a couple of other words.

আমরা আরও কয়েকটি শব্দ বলতে পারি।

For example, we can say, “Today is very muggy.”

উদাহরণস্বরূপ, আমরা বলতে পারি, "আজ খুব নোংরা।"

“Today is very muggy.”

"আজ খুব নোংরা।"

Okay, ‘muggy’ means humid.

ঠিক আছে, 'মগি' মানে আর্দ্র।

Again, hot and wet.

আবার, গরম এবং ভেজা।

We can also say, “Today is very sticky.”

আমরা এটাও বলতে পারি, "আজ খুব আঠালো।"

“Today is very sticky.”

So ‘humid’, ‘muggy’, and ‘sticky’ all have the same meaning when you're describing

the weather.

And in this video, we're going to talk about a slang word that comes from California.

এবং এই ভিডিওতে, আমরা ক্যালিফোর্নিয়া থেকে আসা একটি অশ্লীল শব্দ সম্পর্কে কথা বলতে যাচ্ছি।

That's where I'm from.

আমি সেখান থেকে এসেছি।

This slang word is actually  from Northern California,

এই অপবাদ শব্দটি আসলে উত্তর ক্যালিফোর্নিয়া থেকে এসেছে,

in areas like San Francisco,  San Jose, and Oakland.

সান ফ্রান্সিসকো, সান জোসে এবং ওকল্যান্ডের মতো এলাকায়।

And this word is the slang word ‘hella’.

এবং এটি শব্দটি হল অপভাষা শব্দ 'হেলা'।

And it actually has two different meanings.

এবং এটির আসলে দুটি ভিন্ন অর্থ রয়েছে।

So let's look at how it's used in some sentences.

তো চলুন দেখি এটি কিছু বাক্যে কীভাবে ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।

Okay, so here's the first example sentence.

ঠিক আছে, তাই এখানে প্রথম উদাহরণ বাক্য।

“This room is ‘hella’ hot.”

hmm… How is ‘hella’ used?

হুম... 'হেলা' কীভাবে ব্যবহার করা হয়?

It's used to mean the word  ‘really’ or ‘very’, right?

এটি 'সত্যিই' বা 'খুব' শব্দটি বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাই না?

“This room is very hot.”

"এই ঘরটি খুব গরম।"

or “This room is really hot.”

বা "এই ঘরটি সত্যিই গরম।"

In that case, we can say,  “This room is hella hot.”

সেক্ষেত্রে, আমরা বলতে পারি, "এই ঘরটি খুব গরম।"

mm-hmm

So that's the first meaning.

তাই এটাই প্রথম অর্থ।

Let's move on to the second meaning.

দ্বিতীয় অর্থে যাওয়া যাক।

And here's another example sentence.

এবং এখানে আরেকটি উদাহরণ বাক্য।

“There's hella food at home.”

"বাড়িতে হেলা খাবার আছে।"

That doesn't match the word ‘really’, right?

এটি 'সত্যিই' শব্দের সাথে মেলে না, তাই না?

Let's look. There's really food at home.

দেখা যাক। বাড়িতে সত্যিই খাবার আছে।

It doesn't make sense actually.  In the second sentence,

এটা আসলে কোন মানে না. দ্বিতীয় বাক্যে,

‘hella’ is used to mean there's ‘a lot of’

'হেলা' এর অর্থ হল 'অনেক'

or there's ‘many’ things, right?

বা 'অনেক' জিনিস আছে, তাই না?

So in this case, instead of saying,  “There's a lot of food at home,”

সুতরাং এই ক্ষেত্রে, "বাড়িতে অনেক খাবার আছে" বলার পরিবর্তে

we can say, “There's hella food at home.”

আমরা বলতে পারি, "বাড়িতে হেলা খাবার আছে।"

So hurry and go home and eat some of that food.

তাই তাড়াতাড়ি বাড়ি গিয়ে সেই খাবার খান।

Now under ‘hella’, I've written the word ‘hecka’.

এখন 'হেলা' এর নিচে, আমি 'হেক্কা' শব্দটি লিখেছি।

And that's because some people feel uncomfortable using the word ‘hella’, right?

এবং এর কারণ কিছু লোক 'হেলা' শব্দটি ব্যবহার করে অস্বস্তি বোধ করে, তাই না?

Because ‘hella’ has the word ‘hell’, right?

কারণ 'হেলা' শব্দে 'জাহান্নাম' আছে, তাই না?

And ‘hell’ can sometimes be used to express an emotion that's negative or very strong, right?

এবং 'জাহান্নাম' কখনও কখনও এমন একটি আবেগ প্রকাশ করতে ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে যা নেতিবাচক বা খুব শক্তিশালী, তাই না?

And in that case, people use ‘heck’, right?

এবং সেই ক্ষেত্রে, লোকেরা 'হেক' ব্যবহার করে, তাই না?

So again, instead of ‘hella’  some people say ‘hecka’.

তাই আবার, 'হেল্লা'-এর পরিবর্তে কেউ কেউ 'হেক্কা' বলে।

So we can say, “There's hecka food at home.”

mm-hmm

তাই আমরা বলতে পারি, "বাড়িতে হেকা খাবার আছে।"

Again, it means the same thing  - there's a lot of food at home.

আবার, এর অর্থ একই জিনিস - বাড়িতে প্রচুর খাবার রয়েছে।

“There's hecka food at home.”

"বাড়িতে হেকা খাবার আছে।"

But if you don't want to use  ‘hella’, you can use this one.

কিন্তু আপনি যদি 'হেলা' ব্যবহার করতে না চান তবে আপনি এটি ব্যবহার করতে পারেন।

And in the same way you can use ‘hecka’ to  substitute ‘hella’ in the first sentence as well.

এবং একইভাবে আপনি প্রথম বাক্যে 'হেলা' প্রতিস্থাপন করতে 'হেক্কা' ব্যবহার করতে পারেন।

“This room is hecka hot.” Right?

"এই ঘরটা খুব গরম।" ঠিক?

“This room is hecka hot.”

"এই ঘরটা খুব গরম।"

It's very hot in here but I  don't want to say ‘hella’.

এখানে খুব গরম কিন্তু আমি 'হেলা' বলতে চাই না।

But remember, again, this slang word ‘hella’ and ‘hecka’ is actually from Northern California,

কিন্তু মনে রাখবেন, আবার, এই অপবাদ শব্দটি 'হেলা' এবং 'হেকা' আসলে উত্তর ক্যালিফোর্নিয়া থেকে এসেছে,

so you might not hear it

তাই আপনি এটি শুনতে নাও পেতে পারেন

or people might not understand what you mean

if you use it in other places  such as New York or the UK.

So keep that in mind.

"আমার কিছু করার আছে।"

"আমার কিছু করার আছে।"

Okay, so those are the ways that we can use  ‘hella’ or ‘hecka’ in our everyday speech.

But I want to remind you guys, one more time,

Some hip-hop artists from that area,

such as e-40, and the Federation,  use the slang word in their music.

They use ‘hella’ mostly.

So next time you decide to  listen to some of their music,

for all Koreans to know, okay.

একটি খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ শব্দভান্ডার সম্পর্কে কথা বলতে চাই

And that word is ‘monsoon season’.

, ঠিক আছে। আর সেই শব্দটি হল 'বর্ষা ঋতু'।

What is ‘monsoon season’?

'বর্ষা ঋতু' কি?

Well, every summer  

ঠিক আছে, প্রতি গ্রীষ্মে

many foreigners come and they're surprised  by how much rain there is, right?

অনেক বিদেশী আসে এবং তারা কতটা বৃষ্টিপাত দেখে অবাক হয়, তাই না?

In the summer, in Korea, for about one month,

গ্রীষ্মে, কোরিয়ায়, প্রায় এক মাস,

usually in July, there's a lot of rain, okay.

সাধারণত জুলাই মাসে, প্রচুর বৃষ্টি হয়, ঠিক আছে।

And in English we call that the ‘monsoon season’.

আর ইংরেজিতে আমরা যাকে বলি 'বর্ষা ঋতু'।

So it's very important for  Koreans to have a good umbrella.

তাই কোরিয়ানদের জন্য ভালো ছাতা থাকা খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

Maybe some rain boots, right?

হয়তো কিছু বৃষ্টির বুট, তাই না?

But also it can cause some problems  for some businesses and homes  

তবে এটি কিছু ব্যবসা এবং বাড়ির জন্য কিছু সমস্যা সৃষ্টি করতে পারে

if there's too much rain and flooding, right?

যদি খুব বেশি বৃষ্টি হয় এবং বন্যা হয়, তাই না?

So if you see a foreigner, and  they ask about summer in Korea,

তাই আপনি যদি একজন বিদেশীকে দেখেন, এবং তারা কোরিয়াতে গ্রীষ্ম সম্পর্কে জিজ্ঞাসা করে, তাহলে

it's very important that you remember  that you tell them about monsoon season.

এটা খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ যে আপনি মনে রাখবেন যে আপনি তাদের বর্ষা ঋতু সম্পর্কে বলবেন।

Okay so let's look on the board  and look at this example sentence.

ঠিক আছে তাই এর বোর্ড তাকান এবং এই উদাহরণ বাক্য তাকান.

“The monsoon season in Korea begins in summer.”

"কোরিয়াতে বর্ষা মৌসুম শুরু হয় গ্রীষ্মকালে।"

Right? I just talked about that.

Again, “The monsoon…”

আবার, "বর্ষা..."

Let's pronounce it together.

So “The monsoon season in Korea begins in summer.”

তাই "কোরিয়ায় বর্ষাকাল গ্রীষ্মে শুরু হয়।"

And as we said, the monsoon  season lasts for about one month,

এবং আমরা যেমন বলেছি, বর্ষাকাল প্রায় এক মাস স্থায়ী হয়

and there's lots of rain  during the monsoon season.

এবং বর্ষাকালে প্রচুর বৃষ্টি হয়।

Okay, let's look at some more examples together.

Okay so in this video we learned about  the vocabulary word ‘monsoon season’.

Remember, it's a time in Korea when there's a  lot of rain and it's very hot and sticky, right?

মনে রাখবেন, কোরিয়াতে এমন একটি সময় যখন প্রচুর বৃষ্টি হয় এবং এটি খুব গরম এবং আঠালো, তাই না?

Now, in Southern California where I'm from,

এখন, দক্ষিণ ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ায় আমি যেখান থেকে এসেছি,

there is no monsoon season.

সেখানে বর্ষাকাল নেই।

We get a little bit of rain in the winter  time which is very different from Korea.

But again, nothing like the rain we see here.

কিন্তু আবার, বৃষ্টির মতো কিছুই আমরা এখানে দেখি না।

Okay so that is something that  I'm still trying to get used to.

Okay, so again, the word we  learned is ‘monsoon season’.
