Design is a slippery and elusive phenomenon,

This has been the case throughout history,

At the time,

all weapons were made by hand to different specifications.

This was the golden age of piracy,

it's easy to see why Edward Teach and his fellow pirates

could be seen as pioneers of modern communications design,

Yet design was also used to nobler ends

by an equally brilliant and equally improbable designer,

the 19th-century British nurse, Florence Nightingale.

Her mission was to provide decent healthcare for everyone.

Nightingale was born into a rather grand, very wealthy British family,

ဒီဇိုင်နာတွေရဲ့ သတ္တိနဲ့ မာန်ပါ။

I began my career as a news journalist and foreign correspondent.

ကျွန်မဟာ သတင်းစာသမားနဲ့ နိုင်ငံခြား သတင်းထောက်အဖြစ် အသက်မွေးမှု စတယ်။

I wrote about politics, economics and corporate affairs,

နိုင်ငံရေး၊ စီးပွားရေးနဲ့ စီးပွားလုပ်ငန်း ကိစ္စတွေ ရေးခဲ့ပြီး

and I could have chosen to specialize in any of those fields.

ဒီနယ်ပယ်တစ်ခုခုကို အထူးပြုဖို့ ရွေးခဲ့လောက်တာပေါ့။

But I picked design,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒီဇိုင်းကို ရွေးခဲ့တယ်၊

because I believe it's one of the most powerful tools at our disposal

အကြောင်းက ဒါဟာ ဘဝအရည်အသွေး တိုးတက်ဖို့ အလိုရှိရာ သုံးနိုင်တဲ့

to improve our quality of life.

အားအကောင်းဆုံး ကိရိယာဖြစ်လို့ပါ။

And greatly as I admire the achievements of professional designers,

ပညာရှင်ပီသတဲ့ ဒီဇိုင်နာတွေကို အထူးလေးစားမိတာကြောင့်၊

which have been extraordinary and immense,

ဒါက လွန်ကဲ၊ ကြီးမားပါတယ်၊

I also believe

ကျွန်မလည်း ယုံကြည်မိတာက

that design benefits hugely from the originality,

ကိုယ်ပိုင်ဟန်၊ သမားရိုးကျ မဟုတ်တဲ့ စဉ်းစားနည်း၊

the lateral thinking

ပုန်ကန်သူ၊ သွေဖည်သူတွေရဲ့

and the resourcefulness of its rebels and renegades.

ဝမ်းစာပြည့်မှုကနေ ဒီဇိုင်းဟာကြီးမားတဲ့ အကျိုးကျေးဇူးပေးတာကိုပါ။

And we're living at a remarkable moment in design,

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ဒီဇိုင်းမှာရှိတဲ့ ထူးခြားတဲ့ ကာလမှာ ရှင်သန်နေတာပါ၊

because this is a time when the two camps are coming closer together.

အကြောင်းက ဒီကာလဟာ တည်နေရာနှစ်ခု အတူတူ နီးကပ်လာချိန်ဖြစ်လို့ပါ။

Because even very basic advances in digital technology

ဒစ်ဂျစ်တယ် နည်းပညာက အခြေခံ တိုးတက်မှုတွေတောင်မှ

have enabled them to operate increasingly independently,

ဒါတွေကို တိုးတိုးပြီး လွတ်လပ်စွာ လည်ပတ်ဖို့ ထောက်ကူပေးထားပါတယ်။

in or out of a commercial context,

စီးပွားဆန်တဲ့ အခြေအနေရဲ့ အတွင်း(သို့) အပြင်မှာ

to pursue ever more ambitious and eclectic objectives.

အရင်ထက်ပို အလှမ်းကျယ်ပြီး နှံ့စပ်တဲ့ ရည်မှန်းချက်တွေကို လေ့လာလိုက်စားဖို့ပါ။

So in theory,

ဒီတော့ သဘောတရား အနေနဲ့

basic platforms like crowdfunding, cloud computing, social media

အခြေခံ စနစ်တွေဖြစ်တဲ့ စုပေါင်းထည့်ဝင်၊ ခြင်း၊ မိုးတိမ်စနစ်နဲ့ လူမှုရေးမီဒီယာတွေဟာ

are giving greater freedom to professional designers

ပညာရှင် ဒီဇိုင်နာတွေကို ပိုကြီးကျယ်တဲ့ လွတ်လပ်ခွင့်ပေးနေပြီး

and giving more resources for the improvisational ones,

ရသလို ဖန်တီးနေသူတွေကိုတော့ ပိုမိုတဲ့ အရင်းအမြစ်တွေ ပေးနေတယ်၊

and hopefully,

မျှော်လင့်တာက

a more receptive response to their ideas.

သူတို့ စိတ်ကူးတွေကို ပိုသဘောပေါက် လွယ်တဲ့ အဖြေပါ။

Now, some of my favorite examples of this are in Africa,

ကဲ့ ဒါအတွက် ကျွန်မအကြိုက် နမူနာ တစ်ချို့ကတော့ Africa မှာပါ။

where a new generation of designers

အဲဒီမှာက ဒီဇိုင်နာ မျိုးဆက်သစ် တစ်ခုဟာ

are developing incredible Internet of Things technologies

အံ့ဩဖွယ် Internet of Things နည်း ပညာတွေကို တိုးတက်တီထွင်နေကြတယ်။

to fulfill Florence Nightingale's dream of improving healthcare

သန့်ရှင်းတဲ့ ရေသွယ်စနစ်ထက် ဆဲလ်ဖုန်း သုံးစွဲခွင့် ပိုရတဲ့ နိုင်ငံတွေမှာ

in countries where more people now have access to cell phones

Florence Nightingale ရဲ့ ကျန်းမာရေး စောင့်ရှောက်မှုရဲ့

than to clean, running water.

အိပ်မက်ကို ဖြည့်ဆည်းဖို့ပါ။

And among them is Arthur Zang.

သူတို့ထဲက တစ်ယောက်က Arthur Zang ပါ။

He's a young, Cameroonian design engineer

သူက ငယ်ရွယ်တဲ့ ကင်မရွန်း ဒီဇိုင်း အင်ဂျင်နီယာပါ။

who has a adapted a tablet computer into the Cardiopad,

သူက တက်ဘလက်ကွန်ပြူတာကို အလွယ်သယ်နိုင်တဲ့

a mobile heart-monitoring device.

နှလုံးစစ်ဆေးကိရိယာ Cardiopad အဖြစ် ပြောင်းခဲ့သူပါ။

It can be used to monitor the hearts of patients in remote, rural areas.

ဒါကို ဝေးလံတဲ့ ကျေးလက်ဒေသက လူနာတွေ ရဲ့ နှလုံးတွေကို စစ်ဆေးဖို့ သုံးနိုင်တယ်။

The data is then sent on a cellular network

နောက်တော့ ဒေတာကို မိုင်ရာချီဝေးတဲ့ ပစ္စည်းစုံတပ်ထားတဲ့

to well-equipped hospitals hundreds of miles away

ဆေးရုံတွေဆီ စိစစ်ဖို့အတွက် ဆယ်လူလာ

for analysis.

ကွှန်ရက်ထဲပို့ပါတယ်။

And if any problems are spotted by the specialists there,

အဲဒီက အထူးကုတွေက ပြဿနာ တစ်ခုခု တွေ့တယ်ဆိုရင်

a suitable course of treatment is recommended.

သင့်တော်တဲ့ ကုသမှု ဆေးပတ်တစ်ခု အကြံပေးပါတယ်။

And this of course saves many patients

ဒါဟာ တကယ်တော့ ဒီဆေးရုံတွေဆီ ရှည်ကြာ၊

from making long, arduous, expensive and often pointless journeys

ခက်ခဲပြီး စျေးကြီးကာ မကြာခဏ အကျိုးမဲ့တဲ့ ခရီးတွေ ထွက်ခြင်းကနေ လူအများကြီးကို

to those hospitals,

ကယ်တင်ပေးပပြီး

and makes it much, much likelier

သူတို့ နှလုံးတွေဟာ တကယ်ပဲ စစ်ဆေးခံရမယ်

that their hearts will actually be checked.

ဆိုတာကို ပုံပိုပြီး ဖြစ်နိုင် လာအောင် လုပ်ပေးတာပါ။

Arthur Zang started working on the Cardiopad eight years ago,

Arthur Zang ဟာ Cardiopad ကို သူ့ရဲ တက္ကသိုလ် နောက်ဆုံးနှစ်မှာ

in his final year at university.

လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ ရှစ်နှစ်က စလုပ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

But he failed to persuade any conventional sources

ဒါပေမဲ့ သူ့ရဲ့ ပရောဂျက် အောင်မြင်ဖို့ ရင်းနှီးမြှပ်နှံမှုပေးဖို့

to give him investment to get the project off the ground.

အစဉ်အလာ အရင်းအမြစ်တွေကို ဖျောင်းဖျဖို့ ပျက်ကွက်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

He posted the idea on Facebook,

သူ့ရဲ့ စိတ်ကူးကို Facebook မှာတင်တော့

where a Cameroonian government official saw it

အဲဒီမှာ ကင်မရွန်း အစိုးရ အာဏာပိုင်တစ်ဦး တွေ့သွားကာ

and managed to secure a government grant for him.

သူ့အတွက် အစိုးရ ထောက်ပံ့ကြေးရဖို့ သေချာအောင် စီမံပေးခဲ့တယ်။

He's now developing not only the Cardiopad,

အခု သူဟာ Cardiopad သာမကပဲ အခြား မိုဘိုင်း ဆေးပညာဆိုင်ရာ

but other mobile medical devices to treat different conditions.

ကိရိယာတွေကိုလည်း အခြေအနေ အမျိုးမျိုးမှာ ကုသဖို့ တီထွင်ဖန်တီးနေပါတယ်။

And he isn't alone,

ပြီးတော့ သူတစ်ဦးတည်း မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

because there are many other inspiring and enterprising designers

အကြောင်းက အခြားများစွာသော ထက်မြက် ပြီး ကြံရည်ဖန်ရည်ရှိတဲ့ ဒီဇိုင်နာတွေဟာလည်း

who are also pursuing extraordinary projects of their own.

သူတို့ကိုယ်ပိုင် ထူးခြားတဲ့ ပရောဂျက် တွေကို လိုက်စားသူတွေ ရှိပါတယ်။

And I'm going to finish by looking at just a few of them.

ဒါတွေထဲက တစ်ချို့ကိုပဲ ကြည့်လိုက်ရင်း ကျွန်မ အဆုံးသတ်ပါတော့မယ်။

One is Peek Vision.

တစ်ခုက Peek Vision ပါ။

This is a group of doctors and designers in Kenya,

ဒါဟာ ကင်ညာက ဆရာဝန်တွေနဲ့ ဒီဇိုင်နာတွေရဲ့ အဖွဲ့တစ်ဖွဲ့ပါ၊

who've developed an Internet of Things technology of their own,

သူတို့ကိုယ်ပိုင် Internet of Things နည်းပညာကို သယ်လို့ရတဲ့ မျက်စိ

as a portable eye examination kit.

စစ်ဆေးရေး ကိရိယာ တစ်စုံအဖြစ် ထွင်ထားသူတွေပါ။

Then there's Gabriel Maher,

ပြီးတော့ Gabriel Maher ပါ၊

who is developing a new design language

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ပြောင်းလဲနေတဲ့ ကျား၊ မ

to enable us to articulate the subtleties of our changing gender identities,

လက္ခဏာတွေရဲ့ သိမ်မွေ့မှုတွေကို အစဉ်အလာ သမားရိုးကျတွေ လက်ကိုင်မပြုပဲ

without recourse to traditional stereotypes.

ပီပီသသ ဆိုနိုင်ဖို့ ဒီဇိုင်း ဘာသာ စကားသစ်ကို တီထွင်နေသူပါ။

All of these designers and many more are pursuing their dreams,

အဲဒီ ဒီဇိုင်နာအားလုံးနဲ့ များစွာတို့ဟာ သူတို့ အိပ်မက်တွေနောက် လိုက်နေတာပါ၊

by the making the most of their newfound freedom,

အသစ်တွေ့ရှိတဲ့ လွတ်လပ်မှုရဲ့ အများစုကို ဖန်တီးရင်း၊

with the discipline of professional designers

ဝါရင့် ဒီဇိုင်နာတွေရဲ့ ကျင့်ဝတ်နဲ့

and the resourcefulness of rebels and renegades.

ပုန်ကန်သူတွေ၊ သွေဖည်သူတွေရဲ့ ဝမ်းစာပြည့်မှုနဲ့ပါ။

And we all stand to benefit.
