Sounds cool, doesn't it?

Some people may have no idea what that means.

ဒါက ဘာကိုဆိုလိုတာကို လူတစ်ချို့ မသိလောက်ဘူး။

But I'm sure you've all heard about Cecil the lion.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ခြင်္သေ့ Cecil ကိုတော့ အားလုံး ကြားဖူးလောက်တာ သေချာတယ်။

He roars no more.

သူ မဟိန်းတော့ပါဘူး။

On the second of July, 2015,

၂၀၁၅ ဇူလိုင် ၂ ရက်မှာ

his life was cut short when he was killed by a trophy hunter.

ဆုရ မုဆိုးတစ်ယောက်က သတ်လိုက်တဲ့အခါ သူ့အသက် တိုခဲ့ရတယ်။

They say that you can become attached to the animals you study.

သင် လေ့လာတဲ့ တိရိစ္ဆာန်တွေကို တွယ်တာလာနိုင်တယ်လို့ ဆိုကြတယ်။

That was the case for me with Cecil the lion,

ဒါက ခြင်္သေ့ Cecil နဲ့ ကျွန်မရဲ့ အဖြစ်ပါ၊

having known him and studied him for three years

သုံးနှစ်တာ Hwange National Park မှာ

in Hwange National Park.

သူ့ကို သိကျွမ်း၊ လေ့လာရင်းပါ။

I was heartbroken at his death.

သူသေသွားတာ ကျွန်မ အသည်းကွဲခဲ့တယ်။

But the good thing to come out of this tragedy

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒီအဖြစ်ဆိုကနေ ထွက်လာတဲ့ ကောင်းတဲ့အရာက

is the attention that the story brought

ဒီအဖြစ်က ခြိမ်းခြောက်ခံနေရတဲ့ တောရိုင်းတွေရဲ့

towards the plight of threatened wild animals.

အတိဒုက္ခဆီကို ယူဆောင်သွားတဲ့ အာရုံစိုက်မှုပါ။

After Cecil's death,

Cecil သေဆုံးပြီးနောက်မှာ

I began to ask myself these questions:

ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် ဒီမေးခွန်းတွေ စမေးခဲ့တယ်။

What if the community that lived next to Cecil the lion

ခြင်္သေ့ Cecil နဲ့ ကပ်လျက်နေတဲ့ ရပ်ရွာက သူ့ကို ကာကွယ်ရာမှာ

was involved in protecting him?

ပါဝင်ခဲ့တယ်ဆိုရင်ရော။

What if I had met Cecil when I was 10 years old, instead of 29?

ကျွန်မရဲ့ အသက် ၂၉ နှစ် အစား ၁၀ နှစ်တုန်းက Cecil နဲ့ တွေ့ဆုံခဲရင်ရော။

Could I or my classmates have changed his fate?

ကျွန်မ (သို့) အတန်းဖော်တွေက သူ့ကြမ္မာကို ပြောင်းနိုင်မလား။

Many people are working to stop lions from disappearing,

ခြင်္သေ့တွေ ပျောက်ကွယ်သွားမှာ တားဆီးဖို့ လူအများအပြား လုပ်ဆောင်နေကြတယ်။

but very few of these people are native to these countries

or from the communities most affected.

But the communities that live with the lions

are the ones best positioned to help lions the most.

ခြင်္သေ့တွေကိုအများဆုံး ကူညီဖို့ အကောင်းဆုံး နေရာယူထားသူတွေပါ။

Local people should be at the forefront

ဒေသခံတွေဟာ သူတို့ရဲ့ တောရိုင်း တိရိစ္ဆာန်တွေ

of the solutions to the challenges facing their wildlife.

ရင်ဆိုင်နေရတဲ့ စိန်ခေါ်မှုတွေရဲ့ ဖြေရှင်းမှုတွေမှာ ရှေ့တန်းမှာ ရှိသင့်တယ်။

Sometimes, change can only come

တစ်ခါတစ်လေမှာ ပြောင်းလဲမှုက

when the people most affected and impacted take charge.

Local communities play an important role

ခြင်္သေ့တွေနဲ့ အခြား တောရိုင်းတိရိစ္ဆာန်တွေကို

in fighting poaching and illegal wildlife trade,

အဓိက ခြိမ်းခြောက်နေတဲ့ ခိုးဖမ်းတာနဲ့ တရားမဝင် တောရိုင်း

which are major threats affecting lions and other wildlife.

ရောင်းဝယ်မှု တိုက်ဖျက်ရေးမှာ ဒေသတွင်း ရပ်ရွာတွေက အရေးပါတဲ့ အခန်းက ပါဝင်ပါတယ်။

Being a black African woman in the sciences,

သိပ္ပံပညာရပ်တွေမှာ လူမည်း အမျိုးသမီးဖြစ်နေတော့

the people I meet are always curious to know

ဆုံတွေ့တဲ့လူတွေ အမြဲတမ်း သိချင်တာက

if I've always wanted to be a conservationist,

ကျွန်မက သဘာဝတန်းကျင် မြတ်နိုးသူ အမြဲ ဖြစ်ချင်ခဲ့တာလားတဲ့

because they don't meet a lot of conservationists

who look like me.

When I was growing up,

ကျွန်မ ကြီးပြင်းလာစဉ်မှာ

I didn't even know that wildlife conservation was a career.

တောရိုင်းဝန်းကျင် ထိန်းသိမ်းရေးဟာ အလုပ်တစ်ခုလို့တောင် မသိခဲ့ဘူး။

The first time I saw a wild animal in my home country

မွေးရပ်မြေမှာတောရိုင်း တိရိစ္ဆာန် တစ်ကောင်ကို ပထမဆုံး မြင်ဖူးခဲ့တာက

was when I was 25 years old,

အသက် ၂၅ နှစ်မှာပါ၊

even though lions and African wild dogs

ခြင်္သေ့တွေ၊ အာဖရိကန် ခွေးရိုင်းတွေဟာ

lived just a few miles away from my home.

အိမ်နဲ့ဆို မိုင်အနည်းငယ်အတွင်းမှာ နေတာတောင်ပါ။

This is quite common in Zimbabwe,

ဒါက Zimbabwe မှာ ဖြစ်နေကျပါ၊

as many people are not exposed to wildlife,

အတော်များများဟာ တောရိုင်းတွေနဲ့ ထိတွေ့မှု မရှိကြဘူး၊

even though it's part of our heritage.

သူတို့ အမွေအနှစ်ရဲ့ အစိတ်အပိုင်း ဆိုတာတောင်နော်။

When I was growing up,

ကျွန်မ ကြီပြင်းလာစဉ်မှာ

I didn't even know that lions lived in my backyard.

ခြင်္သေ့တွေက ကျွန်မရဲ့အိမ်နောက်ဘက်မှာ နေတာကိုတောင် မသိခဲ့ဘူး။

When I stepped into Savé Valley Conservancy

လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ ၁၀ နှစ်က အေးစက်တဲ့ ဆောင်းမနက်ခင်းတစ်ခုမှာ

on a cold winter morning 10 years ago

ကျွန်မရဲ့ မဟာတန်း သုတေသန ပရောဂျက်အတွက်

to study African wild dogs for my master's research project,

အာဖရီကန် ခွေးရိုင်းတွေကို လေ့လာဖို့ Savé Valley Conservancy ကို ဝင်မိတော့

I was mesmerized by the beauty and the tranquility that surrounded me.

ကျွန်မကို ဝန်းရံနေတဲ့ အလှပအပနဲ့ အေးချမ်းမှုရဲ့ ညှို့ယူခံလိုက်ရတယ်။

I felt like I had found my passion and my purpose in life.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ထက်သန်မှုနဲ့ ဘဝ ရည်ရွယ်ချက်ကို တွေ့လိုက်ပြီးလို့ အထင်ရောက်ခဲ့တယ်။

I made a commitment that day

အဲဒီနေ့မှာ တိရိစ္ဆာန်တွေကို ကာကွယ်ရေးမှာ

that I was going to dedicate my life to protecting animals.

ဘဝကို ရည်စူထားတော့မယ်လို့ စိတ်ပိုင်းဖြတ်လိုက်တယ်။

I think of my childhood school days in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe မှာ ကလေးဘဝ ကျောင်းတက်ရက်တွေနဲ့ ကျောင်းမှာ

and the other kids I was in school with.

အတူရှိခဲ့တဲ့ အခြားကလေးတွေကို တွေးမိသွားတယ်။

Perhaps if we had a chance to interact with wildlife,

ဖြစ်နိုင်တာက သဘာဝ တောရိုင်းနဲ့ ထိတွေ့ခွင့်ရှိရင်

more of my classmates would be working alongside me now.

အခုဆို ပိုများတဲ့ အတန်းဖော်တွေ ကျွန်မနဲ့ တွဲလုပ်နေကြမလားပေါ့။

Unless the local communities want to protect and coexist with wildlife,

ဒေသတွင်း ရပ်ရွာတွေက တောရိုင်းသဘာဝကို ကာကွယ်ပြီး အတူမနေချင်ဘူးဆိုရင်

all conservation efforts might be in vain.

ထိန်းသိမ်း ကြိုးပမ်းမှု အားလုံးဟာ အချည်းနှီးဖြစ်လိမ့်မယ်။

These are the communities that live with the wild animals

ဂေဟစနစ် တစ်ခုတည်းမှာ တောရိုင်း တိရိစ္ဆာန်တွေနဲ့ နေထိုင်တဲ့

in the same ecosystem

ရပ်ရွာတွေရှိပြီး ဒီလိုဖြစ်တာရဲ့

and bear the cost of doing so.

ဆုံးရှုံးမှုကို ခေါင်းခံရတာပါ။

If they don't have a direct connection

တိရိစ္ဆာန်တွေဆီက တိုက်ရိုက် ဆက်သွယ်မှု

or benefit from the animals,

(သို့)အကျိုးကျေးဇူးတစ်ခု သူတို့မှာ မရှိရင်

they have no reason to want to protect them.

သူတို့ကို ကာကွယ်ချင်စရာ အကြောင်းမရှိပါ။

And if local communities don't protect their wildlife,

ဒေသတွင်း ရပ်ရွာတွေက သူတို့ရဲ့ သဘာဝတောရိုင်းကို မကာကွယ်ရင်

no amount of outside intervention will work.

ပြင်ပက စွက်ဖက်မှု ဘယ်လောက်ဖြစ်ဖြစ် အလုပ်ဖြစ်မှာ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

So what needs to be done?

ဒီတော့ ဘာတွေ လုပ်ထားဖို့လိုလဲ။

Conservationists must prioritize environmental education

ထိန်းသိမ်းစောင့်ရှောက်သူတွေဟာ ပတ်ဝန်းကျင် ဆိုင်ရာ ပညာရေးကို ဦးစားပေးပြီး

and help expand the community's skills to conserve their wildlife.

သဘာဝတောရိုင်းကို ထိန်းသိမ်းဖို့ ရပ်ရွာရဲ့ ကျွမ်းကျင်မှုတွေ ကျယ်ပြန့်ဖို့ကူညီရမယ်

Schoolchildren and communities must be taken to national parks,

သဘာဝတောရိုင်းနဲ့ ဆက်သွယ်ဖို့ အခွင့်အလမ်းတစ်ခု ရရှိစေဖို့

so they get a chance to connect with the wildlife.

ကျောင်းသားတွေနဲ့ရပ်ရွာတွေကို အမျိုးသား ဉယျာဉ်တွေဆီ ခေါ်သွားရပါမယ်။

At every effort and every level,

အားထုတ်မှုတိုင်း၊ အဆင့်တိုင်းမှာ

conservation must include the economies of the people

ထိန်းသိမ်းရေးဟာ တောရိုင်း တိရိစ္ဆာန်တွေနဲ့ မြေကိုမျှဝေနေထိုင်တဲ့

who share the land with the wild animals.

လူတွေရဲ့ စီးပွားရေးတွေကို ထည့်သွင်းရမယ်။

It is also critical that local conservationists

ဒေသတွင်း သဘာဝဝန်းကျင် ထိန်းသိမ်းသူတွေဟာ အားထုတ်မှုတိုင်းရဲ့

be part of every conservation effort,

တစ်စိတ်တစ်ပိုင်းဖြစ်ဖို့ကလည်း အရေးကြီးပါတယ်။

if we are to build trust and really embed conservation into communities.

ယုံကြည်မှု တည်ဆောက်ပြီး ထိန်းသိမ်းရေးကို ရပ်ရွာတွေထဲမှာစွဲခိုင်နေအောင် လုပ်ဖို့ပါ။

As local conservationists, we face many hurdles,

ဒေသတွင်း ထိန်းသိမ်းသူတွေအနေနဲ့ အတားအဆီးတွေ ကြုံရပါတယ်၊

from outright discrimination to barriers because of cultural norms.

ဗြောင်ကျတဲ့ ခွဲခြားဆက်ဆံခြင်းကနေ ယဉ်ကျေးမှု စံတွေကြောင့် အတားအဆီးတွေအထိပါ။

But I will not give up my efforts

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကမ္ဘာမြေ ရှင်ကျန်ရေး အတွက် တိုက်ပွဲမှာ

to bring indigenous communities to this fight

ဌာနေရင်း လူစုတွေကို ခေါ်ဖို့ အားထုတ်မှုတွေကို

for the survival of our planet.

ဘယ်တော့မှ လက်လျှော့မှာ မဟုတ်ဘူး။

I'm asking you to come and stand together with me.

သင်တို့ကို လာပြီး ကျွန်မနဲ့အတူ ရပ်တည်ပေးဖို့ တောင်းခံနေတာပါ။

We must actively dismantle the hurdles we have created,

ကျွန်မတို့ ဖန်တီးထားတဲ့ အတားအဆီးတွေကို တက်ကြွစွာ တစ်စစီ ဖျက်သိမ်းရမှာပါ။

which are leaving indigenous populations out of conservation efforts.

ဒါတွေက ထိန်းသိမ်းရေး အားထုတ်မှုတွေကနေ ဌာနေရင်း လူစုတွေကို ချန်ရစ်စေတာပါ။

I've dedicated my life to protecting lions.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ဘဝကို ခြင်္သေ့တွေကို ကာကွယ်ရေးမှာ ရည်စူးထားခဲ့တယ်။

And I know my neighbor would, too,

တိရိစ္ဆာန်တွေဟာ သူတို့နဲ့ ကပ်လျက် နေနေတာကို သိမှသာ

if only they knew the animals that lived next door to them.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ အိမ်နီးနားချင်းတွေ လုပ်မယ်ဆိုတာလည်းသိပါတယ်။
