Some people may have no idea what that means.

But I'm sure you've all heard about Cecil the lion.

به‌ڵام دڵنیام هه‌مووتان له‌باره‌ی سێسیڵی شێر بیستووتانه‌.

He roars no more.

چیتر نانه‌ڕێنێت.

On the second of July, 2015,

له‌ دووی حوزه‌یرانی 2015،

his life was cut short when he was killed by a trophy hunter.

ژیانی وه‌ستێنرا كاتێك له‌لایه‌ن ڕاوكه‌رێكی سه‌ركه‌وتوو كوژرا.

-ده‌ڵێن ده‌توانیت به‌و گیاندارانه‌ی توێژ ینه‌وه‌یان له‌سه‌ر ده‌كه‌یت ببه‌سترێیه‌وه‌

They say that you can become attached to the animals you study.

That was the case for me with Cecil the lion,

ئه‌وه‌ حاڵی من بوو له‌گه‌ڵ سێسیڵی شێر،

having known him and studied him for three years

ناسیم و توێژینه‌وه‌م له‌سه‌ر كرد بۆ ماوه‌ی سێ ساڵ

in Hwange National Park.

له‌ باخچه‌ی نیشتیمانیی هوانگ.

I was heartbroken at his death.

به‌ مردنی تێکشکام.

But the good thing to come out of this tragedy

به‌ڵام شته‌ باشه‌كه‌ بۆ ده‌رچوون له‌و تراژیدیایه‌

is the attention that the story brought

ئه‌و گرنگی پێدانه‌ بوو كه‌ چیڕۆكه‌كه‌ له‌گه‌ڵ خۆی هێنای

towards the plight of threatened wild animals.

له‌باره‌ی چه‌ڵه‌مه‌ی گیانداره‌ كێوییه‌ هه‌ڕه‌شه‌ لێ كراوه‌كان.

After Cecil's death,

دوای مه‌رگی سێسیڵ،

I began to ask myself these questions:

ده‌ستم كرد به‌ كردنی ئه‌م پرسیارانه‌ له‌ خۆم:

What if the community that lived next to Cecil the lion

ئه‌ی ئه‌گه‌ر ئه‌و كۆمه‌ڵگایه‌ی له‌ نزیك سێسیڵی شێر دەژین

was involved in protecting him?

به‌شداربووایه‌ له‌ پاراستنی ئه‌و؟

What if I had met Cecil when I was 10 years old, instead of 29?

ئه‌ی ئه‌گه‌ر سێسیڵم بینیبا كاتێك 10 ساڵ بووم، له ‌بری 29 ساڵی؟

Could I or my classmates have changed his fate?

ئایا من و هاوپۆله‌كانم ده‌مانتوانی چاره‌نووسی ئه‌ومان بگۆڕیبا؟

Many people are working to stop lions from disappearing,

خه‌ڵكانێكی زۆر ئیش له‌سه‌ر وه‌ستاندنی شێره‌كان ده‌كه‌ن له‌ دیارنه‌مان،

but very few of these people are native to these countries

به‌ڵام ژماره‌یه‌كی كه‌م له‌و خه‌ڵكه‌ دانیشتووی ئه‌و وڵاتانه‌ن

or from the communities most affected.

یاخود له‌و كۆمه‌ڵگە زه‌ره‌رمه‌ندترینه‌كانن.

But the communities that live with the lions

به‌ڵام ئه‌و كۆمه‌ڵگەیانه‌ی كه‌ له‌گه‌ڵ شێره‌كان ده‌ژین

are the ones best positioned to help lions the most.

ئه‌وانه‌ن باشترین پێگه‌یان هه‌یه‌ بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی زۆرترین یارمه‌تی شێره‌كان بده‌ن.

Local people should be at the forefront

خه‌ڵكه‌ خۆماڵییه‌كه‌ پێویسته‌ پێشه‌نگ بن

of the solutions to the challenges facing their wildlife.

له‌ چاره‌سه‌ره‌كان بۆ به‌ره‌نگاییه‌كانی ڕوبه‌ڕووبوونه‌وه‌ی گیانداره‌ كێوییه‌كانیان

Sometimes, change can only come

هه‌ندێك جار، گۆڕان ته‌نیا ئه‌و كاته‌ دێت

when the people most affected and impacted take charge.

كه‌ خه‌ڵكه‌ زه‌رمه‌ندترین و گیر خواردووه‌كه‌ به‌رپرسیارێتی هه‌ڵ ده‌گرن.

Local communities play an important role

كۆمه‌ڵگە ناوخۆییه‌كان ده‌ورێكی گرنگ ده‌گێڕن

in fighting poaching and illegal wildlife trade,

له‌ به‌ره‌نگاربوونه‌وه‌ی ڕاو كردن و بازرگانیی نایاساییی گیانداره‌ كێوییه‌كان،

which are major threats affecting lions and other wildlife.

كه‌ هه‌ڕه‌شه‌ی سه‌ره‌كین تووشی شێر و گیانداره‌ كێوییه‌كانی تر ده‌بن.

Being a black African woman in the sciences,

وه‌كو ژنێكی ڕه‌شپیستی ئه‌فریقیایی له‌ بواری زانست،

the people I meet are always curious to know

ئه‌و خه‌ڵكانه‌ی كه‌ چاوم پێیان ده‌كه‌وێت په‌رۆشن بزانن

if I've always wanted to be a conservationist,

گه‌ر هه‌میشه‌ ویستوومه‌ ببمه‌ پارێزکارێك،

because they don't meet a lot of conservationists

چونكه‌ چاویان به‌ پارێزكاری زۆر ناكه‌وێت

who look like me.

كه‌ وه‌كو منن.

When I was growing up,

كاتێك گه‌وره‌ده‌بووم،

I didn't even know that wildlife conservation was a career.

ته‌نانه‌ت نه‌مده‌زانی پاراستنی گیانداری كێویی پیشه‌یه‌كه‌،

The first time I saw a wild animal in my home country

یه‌كه‌م جار كه‌ گیاندارێكی كێویم بینی له‌ وڵاتی خۆم

was when I was 25 years old,

ئه‌و كاته‌ بوو كه‌ ته‌مه‌نم 25 ساڵ بوو،

even though lions and African wild dogs

هه‌ر چه‌نده‌ شێره‌كان و سه‌گه‌ كێوییه‌ ئه‌فریقیاییه‌كان

lived just a few miles away from my home.

ته‌نیا چه‌ند میلێكی كه‌م دوور له‌ ماڵه‌كه‌م ده‌ژیان.

This is quite common in Zimbabwe,

ئه‌مه‌ له‌ زیمبابۆی زۆر باوه‌،

as many people are not exposed to wildlife,

له‌گه‌ڵ ئه‌وه‌ی زۆربه‌ی خه‌ڵك تووشی گیانداری كێویی نابن،

even though it's part of our heritage.

هه‌ر چه‌نده‌ به‌شێكه‌ له‌ كه‌له‌پوورمان.

When I was growing up,

كاتێك بچووك بووم،

I didn't even know that lions lived in my backyard.

ته‌نانه‌ت نه‌مده‌زانی شێره‌كان له‌ پاوانی پشته‌وه‌مان ده‌ژیان.

When I stepped into Savé Valley Conservancy

كاتێك چوومه‌ دۆڵی ساڤێ بۆ پاراستنی سامانه‌ سروشتییه‌كان

on a cold winter morning 10 years ago

له‌ به‌یانییه‌كی ساردی زستان 10 ساڵ پێش ئێستا

to study African wild dogs for my master's research project,

_بۆ توێژینه‌وه‌ له‌سه‌ر سه‌گی كێویی ئه‌فر یقیایی بۆ پڕۆژه‌ی گه‌ڕانی ماسته‌ره‌كه‌م،

I was mesmerized by the beauty and the tranquility that surrounded me.

به‌و جوانیی و ئاسووده‌ییه‌ی كه‌ ده‌وریان دابووم به‌ سەرسام ببووم.

I felt like I had found my passion and my purpose in life.

وا هه‌ستم دەكرد سۆز و مه‌به‌ستم له‌ ژیان دۆزیبۆوه‌.

I made a commitment that day

ئه‌و ڕۆژه‌ به‌ڵێنمدا

that I was going to dedicate my life to protecting animals.

كه‌ ژیانی خۆم بۆ پاراستنی گیانداره‌كان ته‌رخان بكه‌م.

I think of my childhood school days in Zimbabwe

بیر له‌ ڕۆژه‌كانی منداڵیی له‌ قوتابخانه‌ له‌ زیمبابۆی ده‌كه‌مه‌وه‌

and the other kids I was in school with.

و منداڵه‌كانی تر كه‌ له‌ قوتابخانه‌ له‌گه‌ڵیان بووم.

Perhaps if we had a chance to interact with wildlife,

ڕه‌نگه‌ گه‌ر ده‌رفه‌تێكمان هه‌بووایه‌ بۆ تێكه‌ڵ بوون له‌گه‌ڵ گیانداری كێویی،

more of my classmates would be working alongside me now.

زۆرتر له‌ هاوپۆله‌كانم ئێستا له‌گه‌ڵ من كاریان ده‌كرد.

Unless the local communities want to protect and coexist with wildlife,

تاكو كۆمه‌ڵگه‌ ناخۆییه‌كان نه‌یانه‌وێت گیانداری كێویی بپارێزن و له‌گه‌ڵیان بژین،

all conservation efforts might be in vain.

له‌وانه‌یه‌ هه‌موو هه‌وڵه‌كانی پاراستن بێ سوود بن.

These are the communities that live with the wild animals

ئه‌مانه‌ ئه‌و كۆمه‌ڵگەیانه‌ن كه‌ له‌گه‌ڵ گیانداره‌ كێوییه‌كان ده‌ژین

in the same ecosystem

له‌ هه‌مان سیسته‌می ژینگه‌یی

and bear the cost of doing so.

و بۆ ئه‌نجامدانی ئه‌مه‌ تێچووه‌كه‌ ده‌خاته‌ ئه‌ستۆی خۆی.

If they don't have a direct connection

گه‌ر په‌یوه‌ندییه‌كی ڕاسته‌وخۆیان نه‌بێت

or benefit from the animals,

یاخود سوود له‌ گیانداره‌كان نه‌بینن،

they have no reason to want to protect them.

هیچ هۆكارێكیان نییه‌ بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی بیانه‌وێت پارێزگارییان لێ بكه‌ن.

And if local communities don't protect their wildlife,

و گه‌ر كۆمه‌ڵگه‌ ناوخۆییه‌كان گیانداره‌ كێوییه‌كانیان نه‌پارێزن،

no amount of outside intervention will work.

هیچ بڕێك له‌ ده‌ست تێخستنی ده‌ره‌كیی كار ناكات.

So what needs to be done?

بۆیه‌ پێویسته‌ چی بكرێت؟

Conservationists must prioritize environmental education

پێویسته‌ پارێزكاران په‌روه‌رده‌ی ژینگه‌یی پێشه‌نگ بكه‌ن

and help expand the community's skills to conserve their wildlife.

-و یارمه‌تیی فراوان كردنی تواناكانی كۆمه‌ڵ گه‌ بده‌ن بۆ پاراستنی گیانداره‌ كێوییه‌كان

Schoolchildren and communities must be taken to national parks,

پێویسته‌ قوتابی و كۆمه‌ڵكه‌ ببرێن بۆ باخچه‌ نیشتیمانییه‌كان،

so they get a chance to connect with the wildlife.

بۆیه‌ ده‌رفه‌تێكیان ده‌بێت بۆ په‌یوه‌ندیی كردن له‌گه‌ڵ گیانداری كێویی.

At every effort and every level,

له‌ هه‌ر هه‌وڵ و هه‌ر ئاستێك،

conservation must include the economies of the people

پێویسته‌ پاراستن ئابووریی خه‌ڵكه‌كه‌ بگرێته‌وه‌

who share the land with the wild animals.

كه‌ خاكه‌كه‌ له‌گه‌ڵ گیانداره‌ كێوییه‌كان هاوبه‌شی پێ ده‌كه‌ن.

It is also critical that local conservationists

گرنگیشه‌ پارێزكاره‌ ناوخۆییه‌كان

be part of every conservation effort,

ببنه‌ به‌شێك له‌ هه‌وڵی پاراستن،

if we are to build trust and really embed conservation into communities.

گه‌ر بمانه‌وێت متمانه‌ دروست بكه‌ین و پاراستن له‌تاو كۆمه‌ڵگه‌كان چه‌سپ بكه‌ین.

As local conservationists, we face many hurdles,

وه‌كو پارێزكارانی ناوخۆیی، ئێمه‌ ڕووبه‌ڕووی چه‌ندین كۆسپ ده‌بینه‌وه‌،

from outright discrimination to barriers because of cultural norms.

له‌ جیاكاریی ڕاسته‌وخۆ بۆ سنووره‌كان به‌هۆی پێوه‌ره‌ ڕۆشنبیرییه‌كان.

But I will not give up my efforts

به‌ڵام من واز له‌ هه‌وڵه‌كانم ناهێنم

to bring indigenous communities to this fight

بۆ هێنانی كۆمه‌ڵگه‌ خۆماڵییه‌كان بۆ جه‌نگانی ئه‌مه‌

for the survival of our planet.

بۆ مانه‌وه‌ی هه‌ساره‌كه‌مان.

I'm asking you to come and stand together with me.

من داواتان لێده‌كه‌م بێن و له‌گه‌ڵ من پێكه‌وه‌ بوه‌ستین.

We must actively dismantle the hurdles we have created,

پێویسته‌ ئه‌و كۆسپانه‌ی دروستمان كردوون چالاكانه‌ لایان بەرین،

which are leaving indigenous populations out of conservation efforts.

كه‌ دانیشتووانه‌ خۆماڵییه‌كان به‌ بێ هه‌وڵه‌كانی پاراستن جێ ده‌هێڵن.

I've dedicated my life to protecting lions.

من ژیانی خۆم ته‌رخان كردووه‌ بۆ پاراستنی شێره‌كان.

And I know my neighbor would, too,

و ده‌زانم دراوسێكه‌شم هه‌ر ئه‌وه‌ ده‌كات،

if only they knew the animals that lived next door to them.

گه‌ر ته‌نیا ئه‌و گیاندارانه‌یان بناسیبا كه‌ له‌ ده‌رگای ته‌نیشتیان ده‌ژیان.
