Some people may have no idea what that means.

But I'm sure you've all heard about Cecil the lion.

his life was cut short when he was killed by a trophy hunter.

They say that you can become attached to the animals you study.

사람들은 자신이 연구하는 동물에 애착을 가지게 된다고들 합니다.

That was the case for me with Cecil the lion,

제 경우에는 그 애착이 대상이 바로 사자 세실이었죠.

having known him and studied him for three years

3년 동안 그를 알고 지내면서 연구를 했거든요.

in Hwange National Park.

I was heartbroken at his death.

그의 죽음은 제 마음을 아프게 했습니다.

But the good thing to come out of this tragedy

is the attention that the story brought

towards the plight of threatened wild animals.

After Cecil's death,

I began to ask myself these questions:

저는 스스로에게 이런 질문을 던졌죠.

What if the community that lived next to Cecil the lion

만약 사자 세실의 주변에 살던 지역 공동체에서

was involved in protecting him?

그를 보호했더라면 어땠을까?

What if I had met Cecil when I was 10 years old, instead of 29?

내가 29살이 아닌 10살 때 세실을 만났더라면 어땠을까?

Could I or my classmates have changed his fate?

나 또는 내 친구들이 그의 운명을 바꿔놓을 수 있었을까?

Many people are working to stop lions from disappearing,

많은 사람들이 사자가 사라지는 것을 멈추기 위해서 일하고 있지만

but very few of these people are native to these countries

이러한 멸종의 영향을 가장 크게 받고 있는 국가나 공동체 출신들은

or from the communities most affected.

그들 중 극소수뿐입니다.

But the communities that live with the lions

are the ones best positioned to help lions the most.

Local people should be at the forefront

of the solutions to the challenges facing their wildlife.

Sometimes, change can only come

when the people most affected and impacted take charge.

Local communities play an important role

in fighting poaching and illegal wildlife trade,

Being a black African woman in the sciences,

the people I meet are always curious to know

if I've always wanted to be a conservationist,

환경 보호 활동가가 되고 싶어 했는지 궁금해 했죠.

because they don't meet a lot of conservationists

저와 같은 외모를 가진 환경 보호 활동가를

who look like me.

만나보지 못했으니까요.

When I was growing up,

제가 자라는 동안

I didn't even know that wildlife conservation was a career.

저는 야생 동물 보호라는 것이 직업이라는 것조차 몰랐습니다.

The first time I saw a wild animal in my home country

제가 제 고향에서 야생 동물을 처음으로 목격한 것은

was when I was 25 years old,

25살 때였는데요.

even though lions and African wild dogs

비록 사자와 아프리카 야생 들개가

lived just a few miles away from my home.

저희 집에서 몇 마일 떨어진 곳에 살고 있었는데도 말이죠.

This is quite common in Zimbabwe,

이건 짐바브웨에서 꽤 흔한 일입니다.

as many people are not exposed to wildlife,

비록 그것이 우리나라 유산의 일부이지만

even though it's part of our heritage.

많은 사람들이 야생 동물을 직접 접해보지 못하거든요.

When I was growing up,

제가 자라는 동안

I didn't even know that lions lived in my backyard.

저는 사자가 뒤뜰에 살고 있다는 것조차 몰랐습니다.

When I stepped into Savé Valley Conservancy

10년 전 추운 겨울 아침

on a cold winter morning 10 years ago

제 석사학위 연구 프로젝트인 아프리카 야생 들개 연구를 위해

to study African wild dogs for my master's research project,

사베 밸리 환경보호국에 발을 들였을 때

I was mesmerized by the beauty and the tranquility that surrounded me.

저는 제 주변의 아름다움과 고요함에 매료되었습니다.

I felt like I had found my passion and my purpose in life.

저는 제 인생의 열정과 목적을 찾은 것 같은 느낌이 들었습니다.

I made a commitment that day

저는 그날 결심을 했습니다.

that I was going to dedicate my life to protecting animals.

제 인생을 야생 동물 보호에 바치겠다고요.

I think of my childhood school days in Zimbabwe

저는 짐바브웨에서 학교에 다녔던 어린 시절과

and the other kids I was in school with.

학교 친구들을 떠올립니다.

Perhaps if we had a chance to interact with wildlife,

아마도 야생 동물과 소통할 기회가 있었더라면

more of my classmates would be working alongside me now.

더 많은 제 친구들이 지금 저와 함께 일하고 있을 텐데 말이죠.

Unless the local communities want to protect and coexist with wildlife,

지역 공동체가 야생 동물을 보호하고 공존하기를 원하지 않는다면

all conservation efforts might be in vain.

모든 보호를 위한 노력은 물거품이 될지도 모릅니다.

These are the communities that live with the wild animals

지역 공동체는 동일한 생태계에서

in the same ecosystem

야생 동물과 함께 살고 있으며

and bear the cost of doing so.

그에 대한 대가를 치르고 있습니다.

If they don't have a direct connection

그들이 직접적인 연결고리나

or benefit from the animals,

동물로부터 얻는 혜택이 없다면

they have no reason to want to protect them.

그들은 동물을 보호할 이유가 없을 겁니다.

And if local communities don't protect their wildlife,

만약 지역 공동체가 야생 동물을 보호하지 않는다면

no amount of outside intervention will work.

외부의 개입도 전혀 효과가 없을 것입니다.

So what needs to be done?

그렇다면 무엇을 해야 할까요?

Conservationists must prioritize environmental education

환경 보호 활동가들은 환경 교육을 우선순위로 해야 하고

and help expand the community's skills to conserve their wildlife.

야생 동물을 보호하기 위한 공동체의 기술 확장을 지원해야 하죠.

Schoolchildren and communities must be taken to national parks,

학령기 아동과 공동체 구성원들이 국립공원을 방문하게 해야 합니다.

so they get a chance to connect with the wildlife.

그러면 야생 동물과 접촉할 기회를 얻게 됩니다.

At every effort and every level,

이런 모든 노력과 모든 수준에서

conservation must include the economies of the people

환경 보호 활동은 경제 주체들도 포함시켜야 합니다.

who share the land with the wild animals.

야생 동물이 살고 있는 땅을 소유하고 있는 분들요.

It is also critical that local conservationists

또한 중요한 것은 지역의 환경 보호 활동가들이

be part of every conservation effort,

보호 활동을 위한 노력의 일부가 되어야 한다는 겁니다.

if we are to build trust and really embed conservation into communities.

우리가 신뢰를 구축하고 환경 보호를 공동체 내부에 주입하려고 한다면요.

As local conservationists, we face many hurdles,

지역 기반 환경 보호 활동가로서 저희는 많은 난관에 부딪힙니다.

from outright discrimination to barriers because of cultural norms.

노골적인 차별에서부터 문화적 규범에 의한 장벽까지요.

But I will not give up my efforts

하지만 전 제 노력을 포기하지 않을 겁니다.

to bring indigenous communities to this fight

지역 공동체가 지구의 생존을 위해

for the survival of our planet.

싸우도록 하는 것을 말입니다.

I'm asking you to come and stand together with me.

여러분들께도 동참하셔서 저와 함께 싸우기를 부탁드립니다.

We must actively dismantle the hurdles we have created,

저희는 스스로가 창조한 장애물을 적극적으로 제거해야 합니다.

which are leaving indigenous populations out of conservation efforts.

지역 토착민들이 보호 활동을 하지 않게 내버려 두는 장애물을 제거해야 합니다.

I've dedicated my life to protecting lions.

저는 사자를 보호하는 데 제 인생을 바쳐왔습니다.

And I know my neighbor would, too,

제 이웃들도 그렇게 할 것으로 생각합니다.

if only they knew the animals that lived next door to them.

자신들 곁에 동물들이 함께 살고 있다는 걸 알고 있다면 말이죠.
