[were] fighting.

So there was no job, no food.

That's the camp that we have in now

HA: We are doing C-sections and different operations

DM: Every morning we have about 400 patients,

maybe more or less.

But sometimes we are only five doctors

and 16 nurses,

and we are physically getting exhausted to see all of them.

But we take the severe ones,

അപ്പോള്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ രോഗം കൂടിയവരെ നോക്കിയിട്ട്

and we reschedule the other ones the next day.

മറ്റുള്ളവരെ പിറ്റേന്ന് നോക്കും

It is very tough.

And as you can see, it's the women who are carrying the children;

it's the women who come into the hospitals;

That's their house.

And we have a school. This is our bright --

we opened [in the] last two years [an] elementary school

and the majority are women and girls.

PM: And the doctors have some very big rules

PM : ഈ ഡോക്ടര്‍മാര്‍ക്ക് ചില നിബന്ധനകള്‍ ഉണ്ട്

about who can get treated at the clinic.

ആരെയൊക്കെ ചികിത്സിക്കണം എന്നതിനെപറ്റി

Would you explain the rules for admission?

അതിനെ പറ്റി ഒന്ന് വിശധീകരിക്കാമോ ?

HA: The people who are coming to us,

HA :ഞങ്ങളുടെ അടുത്ത് വരുന്ന ആള്‍ക്കാരെ,

we are welcoming.

ഞങ്ങള്‍ സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നു.

We are sharing with them

whatever we have.

But there are only two rules.

First rule:

there is no clan distinguished and political division

in Somali society.

[Whomever] makes those things we throw out.

അങ്ങിനെ ഒന്നിനെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നവരെ ഞങ്ങള്‍ പുറത്താക്കുന്നു.

The second:

രണ്ടാമതായി :

no man can beat his wife.

ആരും ഭാര്യയെ തല്ലാന്‍ പാടില്ല

If he beat,

ആരെങ്കിലും ഭാര്യയെ തല്ലിയാല്‍,

we will put [him] in jail,

ഞങ്ങള്‍ അവനെ പൂട്ടിയിടും,

and we will call the eldest people.

Until they identify this case,

we'll never release him.

That's our two rules.

The other thing that I have realized,

that the woman is the most strong person

Because the last 20 years,

the Somali woman has stood up.

We can reconcile.

DM: As my mother said, we are the future hope,

and the men are only killing in Somalia.

So we came up with these two rules.

അതുകൊണ്ടാണ് ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഈ രണ്ടു നിബന്ധനകള്‍ വെച്ചത് .

In a camp with 90,000 people,

90000 പേരുള്ള ഒരു താവളത്തില്‍,

you have to come up with some rules or there is going to be some fights.

So there is no clan division,

and no man can beat his wife.

And we have a little storage room

where we converted a jail.

So if you beat your wife, you're going to be there.

So empowering the women and giving the opportunity --

we are there for them. They are not alone for this.

PM: You're running a medical clinic.

PM : നിങ്ങള്‍ ആശുപത്രി നടത്തുന്നതിനെ പറ്റി ?

It brought much, much needed medical care

to people who wouldn't get it.

You're also running a civil society.

നിങ്ങള്‍ അച്ചടക്കമുള്ള ഒരു സമൂഹം തന്നെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു.

You've created your own rules,

നിങ്ങള്‍ സ്വന്തം നിയമങ്ങള്‍ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു

in which women and children

സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്കും കുട്ടികള്‍ക്കും

are getting a different sense of security.

സുരക്ഷിതത്വം ലഭിക്കുന്നതരത്തില്‍.

Talk to me about your decision, Dr. Abdi,

and your decision, Dr. Mohamed,

to work together --

for you to become a doctor

and to work with your mother in these circumstances.

HA: My age --

HA : എന്‍റെ കാലത്തില്‍

because I was born in 1947 --

ഞാന്‍ ജനിച്ചത്‌ 1947 ഇല്‍ ആണ്

we were having, at that time,

അന്ന് ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്

government, law and order.

സര്‍കാരും, നിയമവും, ചിട്ടയുമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

But one day, I went to the hospital --

അന്ന് ഒരിക്കല്‍ ഞാന്‍ ആശുപത്രിയില്‍ പോയപ്പോള്‍

my mother was sick --

എന്‍റെ അമ്മക്ക് സുഖമില്ലായിരുന്നു

and I saw the hospital, how they [were] treating the doctors,

അന്ന് ആ ആശുപത്രിയില്‍ ഞാന്‍ കണ്ടു, എങ്ങിനെ ഡോക്ടര്മാര് രോഗികളെ നോക്കുന്നുവെന്നു,

how they [are] committed

അവര്‍ എത്ര കര്‍മ്മനിഷ്ടരാണെന്നു

to help the sick people.

ചികിത്സിക്കുന്നതില്‍.

I admired them,

എനിക്ക് ഒത്തിരി ബഹുമാനം തോന്നി,

and I decided to become a doctor.

അങ്ങിനെ ഞാനും ഡോക്ടര്‍ ആകുവാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.

My mother died, unfortunately,

നിര്‍ഭാഗ്യവശാല്‍ എന്‍റെ അമ്മ മരിച്ചുപോയി,

when I was 12 years [old].

എനിക്ക് 12 വയസ്സുള്ളപ്പോള്‍.

Then my father allowed me

പിന്നീട് എന്‍റെ അച്ഛന്‍ എന്നെ അനുവദിച്ചു,

to proceed [with] my hope.

My mother died

in [a] gynecology complication,

സ്ത്രീരോഗസംബന്ധമായ കാരണം കൊണ്ടായിരുന്നു,

so I decided to become

അതിനാല്‍ ഞാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചു

a gynecology specialist.

ഒരു സ്ത്രീരോഗവിദഗ്ധയാവാന്‍.

That's why I became a doctor.

അങ്ങിനെയാണ് ഞാന്‍ ഡോക്ടര്‍ ആയതു.

So Dr. Deqo has to explain.

ഇനി Dr ടികോ പറഞ്ഞു തരണം.

DM: For me, my mother was preparing [me] when I was a child

DM : എന്‍റെ കാര്യത്തില്‍, എന്‍റെ അമ്മ എന്നെ കുഞ്ഞില്ലേ തൈയാര്‍ എടുപിച്ചു ഡോക്ടര്‍ ആകുവാനായി

to become a doctor, but I really didn't want to.

എനിക്ക് വലിയ താല്പര്യം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല.

Maybe I should become an historian,

എനിക്കിഷ്ടം ചരിത്രകാരിയാകുവാനായിരുന്നു,

or maybe a reporter.

അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ഒരു പത്രലേഖിക.

I loved it, but it didn't work.

ഒത്തിരി ഇഷ്ടമായിരുന്നു, പക്ഷെ അതൊന്നും നടന്നില്ല.

When the war broke out -- civil war --

I saw how my mother was helping

and how she really needed the help,

and how the care is essential to the woman

to be a woman doctor in Somalia

and help the women and children.

And I thought, maybe I can be a reporter and doctor gynecologist.

So I went to Russia, and my mother also,

അങ്ങിനെ ഞാനും അമ്മയും റഷ്യയില്‍ പോയി

[during the] time of [the] Soviet Union.

സോവിയറ്റ്‌ ഉനിയനിന്‍റെ കാലത്തില്‍.

So some of our character,

അതിനാല്‍ ഞങ്ങളുടെ സ്വഭാവത്തിന്‍റെ ശകലങ്ങള്‍,

maybe we will come with a strong Soviet background of training.

So that's how I decided [to do] the same.

My sister was different.

She's here. She's also a doctor.

She graduated in Russia also.

And to go back and to work with our mother

അമ്മയുടെ കൂടെ തിരിച്ചു പോയി പണിയെടുക്കാന്‍

is just what we saw in the civil war --

ആയിരുന്നു കലാപകാലത്തില്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചത്‌

when I was 16, and my sister was 11,

എനിക്ക് 16 ഉം, അനിയത്തിക്ക് 11 ഉം വയസ്സായിരുന്നു

when the civil war broke out.

കലാപം തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോള്‍.

So it was the need and the people we saw

അന്ന് ഞങ്ങള്‍ കണ്ട ജനങ്ങളുടെ അവസ്ഥയാണ്

in the early '90s --

അതായത് ആദ്യ 90 കാലഘട്ടത്തില്‍,

that's what made us go back

and work for them.

PM: So what is the biggest challenge

working, mother and daughter,

പണിയെടുക്കുന്ന അമ്മയും മകളും,

in such dangerous

ഇത്രയും അപകടകരമായ

and sometimes scary situations?

ചിലപ്പോള്‍ ഭീതിജനകമായ സാഹചര്യങ്ങളില്‍ ?

HA: Yes, I was working in a tough situation,

HA : അതെ , ഞാന്‍ വളരെയധികം കഷ്ടപെട്ടു,

very dangerous.

And when I saw the people who needed me,

I was staying with them to help,

because I [could] do something for them.

Most people fled abroad.

But I remained with those people,

and I was trying to do something --

I succeeded in my place.

Now my place is 90,000 people

who are respecting each other,

who are not fighting.

But we try to stand on our feet,

to do something, little things, we can for our people.

And I'm thankful for my daughters.

എന്‍റെ മക്കളെ കിട്ടിയതില്‍ ഞാന്‍ സന്തുഷ്ട്ടയാണ്.

When they come to me,

they help me to treat the people,

to help.

They do everything for them.

They have done what I desire to do for them.

PM: What's the best part

PM : എന്താണ് ഏറ്റവും നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ഇഷ്ടപെട്ടത് ?

of working with your mother,

നിങ്ങളുടെ അമ്മയുടെ കൂടെ അധ്വനിക്കുന്നതില്‍ ?

and the most challenging part for you?

നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ഏറ്റവും ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുള്ളതും ?

DM: She's very tough; it's most challenging.

DM : അമ്മ വളരെ കണിശക്കാരിയാണ് , വളരെ പ്രയാസമേറിയ ജോലിയാണ്

She always expects us to do more.

And really when you think [you] cannot do it,

she will push you, and I can do it.

That's the best part.

She shows us, trains us how to do

and how to be better [people]

and how to do long hours in surgery --

300 patients per day,

10, 20 surgeries,

and still you have to manage the camp --

that's how she trains us.
