I want to start to show just a few pictures to you,

강연을 시작하기 전에

and after I'll speak.

I must speak to you a little bit of my history,

제 개인사에 대해 말씀을 좀 드려야 할 것 같아요.

because we'll be speaking on this

제 강연 중에 개인사를 통해

during my speech here.

얘기할 것이 있기 때문이에요.

I was born in 1944 in Brazil,

저는 1944년에 브라질에서 태어났습니다.

in the times that Brazil was not yet a market economy.

아직 브라질이 시장 경제 체제가 아닐 때였지요.

I was born on a farm,

저는 농장에서 태어났고,

a farm that was more than 50 percent rainforest [still].

50% 이상이 열대 우림 지대였고,

A marvelous place.

대단히 멋진 곳이었입니다.

I lived with incredible birds, incredible animals,

놀라운 새들과, 동물들과 함께 살았지요.

I swam in our small rivers with our caimans.

작은 강에서 악어와 함께 헤엄치곤 했어요.

It was about 35 families that lived on this farm,

이 농장에서 약 35 가정이 함께 살면서

and everything that we produced on this farm, we consumed.

이곳에서 생산한 것을 소비했지요

Very few things went to the market.

아주 조금만 시장에 나갔어요.

Once a year, the only thing that went to the market

일 년에 한 번, 시장에 내놓았던 것은

was the cattle that we produced,

단지 우리가 키우던 가축들이었어요.

and we made trips of about 45 days

도축장에 가기 위해서

to reach the slaughterhouse,

45일간 동안

bringing thousands of head of cattle,

수천 마리의 가축 떼를 이끌고 갔다가

and about 20 days traveling back

20일이 걸려서

to reach our farm again.

다시 농장으로 돌아왔지요.

When I was 15 years old,

제가 열다섯 살이었을 때,

it was necessary for me to leave this place

이 곳을 떠나

and go to a town a little bit bigger -- much bigger --

좀 더 큰, 아니 아주 큰 마을로 가서

where I did the second part of secondary school.

고등학교 과정을 배워야 했습니다.

There I learned different things.

그곳에서는 다른 것들을 배웠어요.

Brazil was starting to urbanize, industrialize,

브라질은 막 도시화, 산업화돼가기 시작했습니다.

and I knew the politics. I became a little bit radical,

정치에 대해 알게 되었고, 약간 급진적이 되었죠.

I was a member of leftist parties,

좌파 정당에 가입해서

and I became an activist.

활동가가 되었습니다.

I [went to] university to become an economist.

대학에 가서는 경제학자가 되었어요.

I [did] a master's degree in economics.

경제학으로 석사 학위를 마쳤지요.

And the most important thing in my life

제 인생에서 가장 중요한 일은

also happened in this time.

마찬가지로 이 때 일어났습니다.

I met an incredible girl

저는 놀라운 한 소녀를 만났고,

who became my lifelong best friend,

제 평생의 반려자가 되어

and my associate in everything that I have done till now,

제가 지금까지 하는 모든 일에 동지가 되었습니다.

my wife, Lélia Wanick Salgado.

제 아내, 레리아 와닉 살가도입니다.

Brazil radicalized very strongly.

브라질은 매우 급진적이었습니다.

We fought very hard against the dictatorship,

독재에 격렬히 항거했고,

in a moment it was necessary to us:

당시 그것은 반드시 필요한 것이었습니다.:

Either go into clandestinity with weapons in hand,

or leave Brazil. We were too young,

where I did a PhD in economics,

We made a lot of trips, financed development,

economic projects in Africa with the World Bank.

And one day photography made a total invasion in my life.

그리고 어느 날 갑자기 사진이 제 인생에 찾아왔습니다.

I became a photographer,

사진 작가가 되었지요.

abandoned everything and became a photographer,

모든 걸 내버리고 사진 작가가 되었어요.

and I started to do the photography

사진을 찍기 시작했고,

that was important for me.

그 일은 저에게 매우 중요했어요.

Many people tell me that you are a photojournalist,

많은 사람들이 저를 사진 기자,

that you are an anthropologist photographer,

아니면 인류학 사진가,

that you are an activist photographer.

혹은 활동 사진 작가라고 부르지만,

But I did much more than that.

저는 그 이상을 했습니다.

I put photography as my life.

I lived totally inside photography

doing long term projects,

and I want to show you just a few pictures

사진을 몇 장 더 보여드리려고 하는데요,

of -- again, you'll see inside the social projects,

제가 직접 그 안으로 들어가 촬영한

that I went to, I published many books

사회 프로젝트입니다.

on these photographs,

이 사진들로 여러 책을 펴냈지만,

but I'll just show you a few ones now.

그 중 일부만 보여드리겠습니다.

In the '90s, from 1994 to 2000,

90년대, 1994년부터 2000년 까지

I photographed a story called Migrations.

"이민"이라는 주제로 사진을 촬영했고

It became a book. It became a show.

그게 책으로도 나오고, 공연도 했습니다.

But during the time that I was photographing this,

I lived through a very hard moment in my life, mostly in Rwanda.

저는 제 인생에서 아주 힘든 시간을 보냈습니다. 대부분 르완다에서 였어요.

I saw in Rwanda total brutality.

거기서 끔찍한 잔인함을 보았습니다.

I saw deaths by thousands per day.

매일 수천 명의 죽음을 목도해야 했지요.

I lost my faith in our species.

저는 인류에 대한 신뢰를 잃어버렸습니다.

I didn't believe that it was possible for us to live any longer,

저는 우리가 더 살아갈 수 있다고 믿을 수 없었어요.

and I started to be attacked by my own Staphylococcus.

게다다 포도상구균에 감염되어 고생했지요.

I started to have infection everywhere.

모든 곳에 감염되었지요.

When I made love with my wife, I had no sperm that came out of me;

아내와 사랑을 나눌 때, 정액이 나오는게 아니라

I had blood.

피가 나왔어요.

I went to see a friend's doctor in Paris,

파리에 있는 친구의 의사를 만나서

told him that I was completely sick.

큰 병에 걸린 것 같다고 말했지요.

He made a long examination, and told me, "Sebastian,

긴 검사 끝에 그는,

you are not sick, your prostate is perfect.

"세바스챤, 당신은 아픈게 아니야. 전립선에는 아무 문제가 없어.

What happened is, you saw so many deaths that you are dying.

죽음을 너무 많이 목격한게 문제야.

You must stop. Stop.

그만 둬야해. 그만.

You must stop because on the contrary, you will be dead."

그만 두지 않으면, 당신이 죽고 말거야."

And I made the decision to stop.

그래서 하던 일을 중단하기로 결정했어요.

I was really upset with photography,

사진, 그리고 세상 모든 것에

with everything in the world,

크게 실망하고

and I made the decision to go back to where I was born.

고향으로 돌아가기로 결심했습니다.

It was a big coincidence.

큰 우연이었죠.

It was the moment that my parents became very old.

부모님들이 연로해지실 무렵이었어요.

I have seven sisters. I'm one of the only men in my family,

일곱 누이가 있고, 제가 형제 중에 유일한 남자에요.

and they made together the decision

그리고 누이들이

to transfer this land to Léila and myself.

저희 부부에게 토지를 넘겨주기로 마음 먹었지요.

When we received this land, this land was as dead as I was.

이 땅을 받았을 당시, 땅도 저처럼 죽어가고 있었어요.

When I was a kid, it was more than 50 percent rainforest.

제가 아이었을 때만해도 절반이 열대 우림이었지만,

When we received the land,

땅을 물려받고 나서 보니

it was less than half a percent rainforest,

열대 우림 지역은 전체 면적의

as in all my region.

0.5%도 안되더군요.

To build development, Brazilian development,

브라질식 개발을 하기 위해,

we destroyed a lot of our forest.

많은 숲을 파괴했습니다.

As you did here in the United States,

여기 미국에서 그랬던 것처럼,

or you did in India, everywhere in this planet.

아니면 인도에서, 지구 위 어디에서나처럼 말이지요.

To build our development,

개발을 하기 위해

we come to a huge contradiction

주변의 모든 것을 파괴해야 하는

that we destroy around us everything.

모순에 처하게 되었습니다.

This farm that had thousands of head of cattle

수천 마리의 가축이 있었지만

had just a few hundreds,

이제는 몇 백 마리밖에 남지 않았습니다.

and we didn't know how to deal with these.

우리는 어떻게 해야할지 몰랐습니다.

And Léila came up with an incredible idea, a crazy idea.

그런데 레일라가 놀랍고도 말도 안되는 아이디어를 생각해 냈지요.

She said, why don't you put back the rainforest that was here before?

이전처럼 열대 우림을 되돌려보자고 하더군요.

You say that you were born in paradise.

마치 천국에서 태어났으니

Let's build the paradise again.

다시 천국을 만들자는 얘기같았죠.

And I went to see a good friend

숲을 조성하는 기술을 가진

that was engineering forests

한 친구를 만나

to prepare a project for us,

프로젝트를 준비하고, 시작했어요.

and we started. We started to plant, and this

우리는 나무를 심기 시작했습니다.

first year we lost a lot of trees, second year less,

첫 해에는 수많은 나무를 잃었어요. 둘째 해가 되니 좀 나아졌죠.

and slowly, slowly this dead land started to be born again.

그리고 점차 죽은 땅이 되살아나기 시작했습니다.

We started to plant hundreds of thousands of trees,

우리는 수십만 그루의 나무를 심기 시작했어요.

only local species, only native species,

오직 토종으로만 심었지요.

where we built an ecosystem identical to the one that was destroyed,

파괴되었던 것과 같은 환경을 구축하자

and the life started to come back in an incredible way.

매우 놀랍게도 생명이 되돌아왔습니다.

It was necessary for us to transform our land

이제, 우리 땅을 국립공원으로

into a national park.

바꿀 필요가 있었습니다.

We transformed. We gave this land back to nature.

우리는 바꾸었습니다. 이 땅을 자연에게 돌려줬지요.

It became a national park.

그곳은 이제 국립공원이 되었습니다.

We created an institution called Instituto Terra,

"땅 연구소"라 불리는 연구소를 세워

and we built a big environmental project to raise money everywhere.

큰 환경 프로젝트를 시작했고 여러 곳으로부터 지원을 받기 시작했습니다.

Here in Los Angeles, in the Bay Area in San Francisco,

여기 LA에서, 또 샌프란시스코의 베이에어리아에서 말이죠.

it became tax deductible in the United States.

미국내 세금 감면 혜택 후원금 자격도 얻었습니다.

We raised money in Spain, in Italy, a lot in Brazil.

또 스페인과 이태리, 브라질에서도 많은 지원을 받았지요.

We worked with a lot of companies in Brazil

이 프로젝트에 돈을 투자하는

that put money into this project, the government.

많은 브라질 기업들과 브라질 정부와도 함께 일했습니다.

And the life started to come, and I had a big wish

일상이 돌아오기 시작했고,

to come back to photography, to photograph again.

사진을 다시 시작하고 싶어졌습니다.

And this time, my wish was not to photograph anymore

하지만 이제는 더 이상 인생 내내 찍어왔던

just one animal that I had photographed all my life: us.

단 하나의 동물 - 사람 - 을 찍고 싶지 않았어요.

I wished to photograph the other animals,

다른 동물들과

to photograph the landscapes,

자연의 모습,

to photograph us, but us from the beginning,

사람, 그러나 최초의 모습으로 돌아가

the time we lived in equilibrium with nature.

자연과 균형을 이루며 사는 모습을 사진에 담고 싶었어요.

And I went. I started in the beginning of 2004,

그 길로 떠났어요. 2004년 초에 시작해서

and I finished at the end of 2011.

2011년 말에 끝냈습니다.

We created an incredible amount of pictures,

엄청난 양의 사진을 찍었고,

and the result -- Lélia did the design of all my books,

그 결과물로 아내가 디자인한 책을 내고

the design of all my shows. She is the creator of the shows.

전시회를 열었어요. 아내가 전시회를 주관했지요.

And what we want with these pictures

우리는 이 사진들로

is to create a discussion about what we have that is pristine on the planet

이 지구 위 최초에 무엇이 있었고,

and what we must hold on this planet

무엇을 지켜야 하는지에 대한 논의가 시작되기를 원했습니다.

if we want to live, to have some equilibrium in our life.

우리가 생존하기 위해서는 삶에 균형이 필요합니다.

And I wanted to see us

그래서 저는 우리가

when we used, yes, our instruments in stone.

석기 시대에 살았던 모습을 보기를 원했습니다.

We exist yet. I was last week

아직 남아 있습니다. 지난 주에 저는

at the Brazilian National Indian Foundation,

브라질 국립 인디안 협회에서

and only in the Amazon we have about 110 groups

아마존에서만 아직 현대 문명과

of Indians that are not contacted yet.

아직 접촉을 하지 않은 110개의 부족이 남아있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

We must protect the forest in this sense.

그렇기 때문에 우리는 숲을 지켜야만 합니다.

And with these pictures, I hope that we can create

이 사진들을 가지고, 우리가

information, a system of information.

정보, 정보의 체계를 만들 수 있기를 바랍니다.

We tried to do a new presentation of the planet,

지구를 새롭게 조명하고자 합니다.

and I want to show you now just a few pictures

of this project, please.

This is what we must fight hard

이것이 우리가 반드시 이대로

to hold like it is now.

지키기 위해 노력해야만 하는 것들입니다.

But there is another part that we must together rebuild,

하지만 우리가 함께 재구축 해야만 할 다른 부분들도 있습니다.

to build our societies, our modern family of societies,

우리 사회, 현대화된 가족 사회를 구축해야 합니다.

we are at a point where we cannot go back.

우리는 다시 돌아갈 수 없는 순간에 처해 있습니다.

But we create an incredible contradiction.

하지만 우리는 놀라운 모순을 만들어 냈습니다.

To build all this, we destroy a lot.

이 모든 것을 만들기 위해, 많은 것들을 파괴했습니다.

Our forest in Brazil, that antique forest

브라질에 있는 열대우림, 오래된 숲이,

that was the size of California,

캘리포니아주만한 크기의 숲이

is destroyed today 93 percent.

오늘날 93%나 파괴되었습니다.

Here, on the West Coast, you've destroyed your forest.

여기 서부 해안에서도 숲이 파괴되었지요.

Around here, no? The redwood forests are gone.

여기 주변에도, 그렇지 않나요? 삼나무 숲이 사라졌습니다.

Gone very fast, disappeared.

아주 빠르게, 사라져 버렸습니다.

Coming the other day from Atlanta, here, two days ago,

여기 오기 이틀 전, 아틀란타에서부터

I was flying over deserts

사막을 지나 비행기를 타고 왔습니다.

that we made, we provoked with our own hands.

그 사막은, 우리가 우리 손으로 만든 것이죠.

India has no more trees. Spain has no more trees.

인도에는, 그리고 스페인에는 더 이상 숲이 없습니다.

And we must rebuild these forests.

이 숲들을 다시 살려내야만 합니다.

That is the essence of our life, these forests.

이 숲들이야 말로 우리 삶의 필수 요소입니다.

We need to breathe. The only factory

우리는 숨을 쉬어야 합니다.

capable to transform CO2 into oxygen,

이산화탄소를 산소로 바꿀 수 있는

are the forests.

유일한 공장은 바로 숲입니다.

The only machine capable to capture the carbon

줄이려고 모든 노력을 다하지만

that we are producing, always,

계속 만들어내는 이산화탄소를

even if we reduce them, everything that we do, we produce CO2,

가둬놓을 수 있는 것도

are the trees.

숲 뿐입니다.

I put the question -- three or four weeks ago,

3, 4주 전에 신문기사를 통해

we saw in the newspapers

노르웨이에서 수백만의

millions of fish that die in Norway.

물고기떼가 죽었다는 기사를 보고 의문이 들었습니다.

A lack of oxygen in the water.

수중에 부족한 산소가 문제가 아니었을까.

I put to myself the question, if for a moment,

스스로에게 자문해 보았습니다.

we will not lack oxygen for all animal species,

인간을 포함한 동물들에게 산소가 부족하게 되지 않는다면

ours included -- that would be very complicated for us.

우리에게 매우 복잡한 문제가 될 것입니다.

For the water system, the trees are essential.

물의 순환에 있어서도 숲은 중요합니다.

I'll give you a small example that you'll understand very easily.

쉽게 이해하실 수 있도록 작은 예를 하나 들지요.

You happy people that have a lot of hair on your head,

머리에 숱이 많은 행복한 사람이라면,

if you take a shower, it takes you

샤워를 하고 나서 머리를 말릴 때

two or three hours to dry your hair

헤어드라이어를 쓰지 않으면

if you don't use a dryer machine.

두세 시간이 걸리겠지요.

Me, one minute, it's dry. The same with the trees.

저는 1 분이면 말라요. 숲도 마찬가지입니다.

The trees are the hair of our planet.

숲은 지구의 머리카락과 같습니다.

When you have rain in a place that has no trees,

나무가 없는 곳에 비가 오면

in just a few minutes, the water arrives in the stream,

단 몇 분 만에 하천으로 흘러 들어가

brings soil, destroying our water source,

토사를 침식시키고 수자원을 파괴하고,

destroying the rivers,

강을 파괴합니다.

and no humidity to retain.

그리고 더이상 수분이 남아있지 않지요.

When you have trees, the root system holds the water.

나무들이 있으면 뿌리가 물을 담아두고 있습니다.

All the branches of the trees, the leaves that come down

나무 가지에서 나뭇잎이 떨어져

create a humid area,

촉촉한 땅을 만들고

and they take months and months under the water, go to the rivers,

수분을 몇 달간 간직하고 있다가 지하수가 강으로 흘러가고

and maintain our source, maintain our rivers.

수자원과 강을 유지합니다.

This is the most important thing,

모든 일상 생활에 물이 필요하다는 것을

when we imagine that we need water for every activity in life.

늘 기억하는게 가장 중요한 점입니다.

I want to show you now, to finish,

강연을 마치기 전에

just a few pictures that for me

이 점에 있어 가장 중요한

are very important in that direction.

사진을 몇 장 보여드리도록 하겠습니다.

You remember that I told you,

제가 말씀드린 것을 기억하시나요?

when I received the farm from my parents

제가 부모님으로부터 한 때 낙원이자, 농장이었던

that was my paradise, that was the farm.

이 농장을 물려 받았을 때,

Land completely destroyed, the erosion there, the land had dried.

땅은 완전히 황폐화되고, 침식되고, 말라있었습니다.

But you can see in this picture,

하지만 이 사진을 보시면,

we were starting to construct an educational center

나중에 브라질에서 가장 큰 환경 센터가 된

that became quite a large environmental center in Brazil.

교육 센터를 만들고 있습니다.

But you see a lot of small spots in this picture.

많은 작은 구멍들을 보실 수 있으실텐데,

In each point of those spots, we had planted a tree.

그 구멍마다 나무를 심었습니다.

There are thousands of trees.

수천 그루의 나무를 심었지요.

Now I'll show you the pictures made exactly in the same point

바로 그 자리를 두 달 전에

two months ago.

다시 촬영한 사진을 보여드리지요.

I told you in the beginning that it was necessary

강연 시작 부분에서

for us to plant about 2.5 million trees

200여 종의 250만 그루를

of about 200 different species

환경을 되살리리 위해

in order to rebuild the ecosystem.

심어야 했다고 말씀드렸지요.

And I'll show you the last picture.

마지막 사진을 보여드리겠습니다.

We are with two million trees in the ground now.

이제 2백만 그루의 나무가 있습니다.

We are doing the sequestration

이 숲이 십만 톤의

of about 100,000 tons of carbon with these trees.

탄소를 흡수하고 있습니다.

My friends, it's very easy to do. We did it, no?

여러분, 아주 쉬운 일이에요. 우리가 해냈잖아요, 그렇죠?

By an accident that happened to me,

우연히 일어난 일로,

we went back, we built an ecosystem.

고향으로 되돌아가, 환경을 되살렸습니다.

We here inside the room,

이곳에 계신 우리 모두가

I believe that we have the same concern,

저희가 브라질에서 만든 것과 같은

and the model that we created in Brazil,

환경 모델에 같은 생각을 가지고 있다고 믿습니다.

we can transplant it here.

이곳에도 적용할 수 있습니다.

We can apply it everywhere around the world, no?

세상 어느 곳에나 적용할 수 있습니다. 그렇지요?

And I believe that we can do it together.

우리 모두가 같이 할 수있다고 믿습니다.
