Kristen Ashburn: Heartrending pictures of AIDS

When I first arrived in beautiful Zimbabwe,

it was difficult to understand that 35 percent of the population

It really wasn't until I was invited to the homes of people

For instance, this is Herbert with his grandmother.

When I first met him, he was sitting on his grandmother's lap.

He has been orphaned, as both of his parents died of AIDS,

and his grandmother took care of him until he too died of AIDS.

He liked to sit on her lap

허버트는 할머니 무릎에 앉는 걸 좋아했어요.

because he said that it was painful for him to lie in his own bed.

왜냐하면 허버트 스스로 침대에 누워있는게 아프다고 했거든요.

When she got up to make tea, she placed him in my own lap

할머니가 차를 끓이기 위해 일어나면서 제 무릎에 그를 넘겨주었어요.

and I had never felt a child that was that emaciated.

저는 한 아이가 이렇게 쇠약할 수 있다는 것을 처음 느꼈습니다.

Before I left, I actually asked him if I could get him something.

저는 그 집을 떠나기 전에, 필요한 것은 없는지 허버트에게 물어보았어요.

I thought he would ask for a toy, or candy,

저는 아이가 인형이나 사탕 같은 것을 부탁할 줄 알았습니다.

and he asked me for slippers,

그런데 아이는 슬리퍼를 부탁했습니다.

because he said that his feet were cold.

아이의 발이 차다고 하더군요.

This is Joyce who's -- in this picture -- 21.

이 사진은 21살 조이스 모습입니다.

Single mother, HIV positive.

미혼모였고, 에이즈 양성이었지요.

I photographed her before and after

저는 그녀의 모습을 사진으로 담았습니다.

the birth of her beautiful baby girl, Issa.

정말 예쁜 아이, 이사가 태어나기 전과 후의 모습을요.

And I was last week walking on Lafayette Street in Manhattan

지난 주에 제가 맨해튼에 있는 라파에트가를 걷고 있을 때,

and got a call from a woman who I didn't know,

모르는 한 여성으로부터 전화를 한 통 받았습니다.

but she called to tell me that Joyce had passed away

조이스가 죽었다고 말해주더군요.

at the age of 23.

그녀는 23살이었어요.

Joyce's mother is now taking care of her daughter,

이제 조이스의 어머니가 그녀의 딸(이사)를 돌봐주고 있습니다.

like so many other Zimbabwean children

짐바브웨의 다른 많은 아이들처럼요.

who've been orphaned by the epidemic.

모두 에이즈 때문에 고아가 된 아이들이죠.

So a few of the stories.

이게 제가 전하는 몇 가지 이야기에요

With every picture,

하지만 모든 사진들에

there are individuals who have full lives

개개인의 인생 이야기가 담겨있어요.

and stories that deserve to be told.

들을 만한 가치가 충분한 이야기들이죠.

All these pictures are from Zimbabwe.

이 모든 사진들은 짐바브웨서 찍었어요.

Chris Anderson: Kirsten, will you just take one minute,

크리스: 크리스틴, 어떻게 아프리카에 가게 되었는지

just to tell your own story of how you got to Africa?

간단히 얘기해 줄 수 있나요?

Kirsten Ashburn: Mmm, gosh.

음..

CA: Just --

크리스: 간단히면 돼요.

KA: Actually, I was working at the time, doing production

사실 그 당시 저는 다른 일을 하고 있었습니다.

for a fashion photographer.

패션 사진 작가로요.

And I was constantly reading the New York Times,

그러면서 꾸준히 뉴욕타임즈를 읽고 있었죠.

and stunned by the statistics, the numbers.

그런데 (에이즈에 관한) 각종 통계를 보고 너무 놀랐습니다.

It was just frightening.

너무도 충격적이었죠.

So I quit my job

그래서 일을 그만두었어요.

and decided that that's the subject that I wanted to tackle.

하고 싶은 일을 하자고 결심했죠.

And I first actually went to Botswana, where I spent a month --

처음엔 보츠와나에 가서 한 달을 보냈어요.

this is in December 2000 --

이 때가 2000년 11월이었구요.

then went to Zimbabwe for a month and a half,

그리고 짐바브웨에서 한 달 반 정도를 보냈습니다.

and then went back again this March 2002

그리곤 2002년 3월에 짐바브웨로 다시 갔어요.

for another month and a half in Zimbabwe.

역시 한 달 반 정도 그곳에 있었습니다.
