On September 10, the morning of my seventh birthday,

And my father smiled and said,

"Well, you know what that means, don't you?"

And I said, "Yeah, that I'm going to have a party

and a cake and get a lot of presents?"

And my dad said, "Well, yes.

But more importantly,

하지만 더 중요한 게 있단다. 7살이 되었다는 건 네가 이제 이성의 나이가 되었다는 거야,

being seven means that you've reached the age of reason,

and you're now capable of committing any and all sins against God and man."

이젠 하느님 아버지와 다른 사람들에게 죄를 지을 수 있는 나이가 되었다는 뜻이기도 하지"

(Laughter)

Now, I had heard this phrase, "age of reason," before.

"이성의 나이"이라는걸 들어본 적은 있습니다.

Sister Mary Kevin had been bandying it about

my second-grade class at school.

2학년 때 얘기를 해주신 적이 있으셨죠. 하지만, 수녀님이 얘기하실 땐,

But when she said it,

the phrase seemed all caught up in the excitement of preparations

그 말은 성찬식이나 신앙고백 준비에 대한 흥분으로

for our first communion and our first confession,

묻혀져 버렸습니다,

하지만 사람들은 다 알죠, 그건 모두 흰색 드레스와 베일을 쓰는 일뿐이라는 걸요,

and everybody knew that was really all about the white dress

and the white veil.

And anyway, I hadn't really paid all that much attention

to that phrase, "age of reason."

So, I said, "Yeah, yeah, age of reason. What does that mean again?"

And my dad said, "Well, we believe, in the Catholic Church,

that God knows that little kids don't know the difference between right and wrong,

하느님 아버지는 어린아이들이 옳고 그른 것을 판단할 줄 모른다는 걸 아셔.

but when you're seven, you're old enough to know better.

하지만 7살이 지나면 그걸 알게 되는 거란다.€

그래서 너도 이제 자라고, 이성의 나이가 되었다는 거야

So, you've grown up and reached the age of reason,

and now God will start keeping notes on you,

그러니깐 지금부터 하느님은 너에 대한 영원한 기록을 하실 거란 말이지"

and begin your permanent record."

(Laughter)

And I said, "Oh ...

그래서 제가 "오, 잠깐만. 그럼 여태까지,

Wait a minute.

You mean all that time, up till today,

내가 착했을 때에도 하느님은 모르고 계셨다는 거야?"

all that time I was so good, God didn't notice it?"

And my mom said, "Well, I noticed it."

그러자 어머니가 "난 알고 있었지"라고 하셨죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And I thought, "How could I not have known this before?

제가 생각하길, "어떻게 이 사실을 여태 모르고 있었을까?

How could it not have sunk in when they'd been telling me?

사람들이 얘길 했는데도 난 제대로 인지하지 못했을까?

착한 일을 했는데 인정도 못 받는다는 걸.

All that being good and no real credit for it.

And worst of all, how could I not have realized

제일 끔찍한 건, 어째서 내가 지금까지 그것에 대해 전혀 몰랐으며

this very important information

드디어 알게 됬을 땐 전혀 아무짝에도 소용없게 되어버렷다는 것이었죠.

until the very day that it was basically useless to me?"

So I said, "Well, Mom and Dad, what about Santa Claus?

그래서 제가 물었습니다, "그럼 엄마, 아빠. 산타할아버진?"

I mean, Santa Claus knows if you're naughty or nice, right?"

그니깐, 산타할아버지는 내가 착했는지 나빴는지 아시잖아?"

And my dad said, "Yeah, but, honey,

그러자 아버지가 말씀하시길, "그래, 하지만 얘야,

I think that's technically just between Thanksgiving and Christmas."

그건 부활절과 크리스마스 사이에만 그렇단다"

And my mother said, "Oh, Bob, stop it. Let's just tell her. I mean, she's seven.

어머니는 "오, 여보, 그만. 그냥 우리 얘기합시다.

얘도 7살인데. 쥴리야, 산타 할아버진 없단다." 하셨습니다.

Julie, there is no Santa Claus."

(Laughter)

Now, this was actually not that upsetting to me.

사실 이건 그렇게 화나는 일은 아니었습니다.

My parents had this whole elaborate story about Santa Claus:

how they had talked to Santa Claus himself and agreed

that instead of Santa delivering our presents

over the night of Christmas Eve,

보통 다른 가족들이 다들 그렇듯

like he did for every other family who got to open their surprises

크리스마스 아침이 되자마자 선물을 뜯는 방법 대신

first thing Christmas morning,

our family would give Santa more time.

우리 가족은 산타에게 좀더 시간을 주기로 산타할아버지와 합의했다고 했어요.

Santa would come to our house while we were at nine o'clock high mass

산타는 우리 크리스마스 날 오전 9시 미사가 있는 시간에 집에 들리는 거죠.

on Christmas morning, but only if all of us kids did not make a fuss.

우리 형제들이 말썽을 피우지 않는다면 말이에요.

Which made me very suspicious.

그게 항상 수상했어요.

It was pretty obvious that it was really our parents giving us the presents.

부모님께서 선물을 주시고 있는 게 아주 분명했습니다.

I mean, my dad had a very distinctive wrapping style,

말하자면, 우리 아버지만의 특별한 선물포장 방법이 있었고,

and my mother's handwriting was so close to Santa's.

우리 엄마는 산타할아버지와 아주 비슷한 글씨체를 가지고 있었다니까요.

(Laughter)

Plus, why would Santa save time by having to loop back

거기다가, 산타 할아버지가 왜 우리 집까지 다시 오겠어요

to our house after he'd gone to everybody else's?

다른 사람들 집에 다 들르고 난 후에 말이죠?

There was only one obvious conclusion to reach from this mountain of evidence:

이런 정보를 모두 종합해서 볼 때 결론은 단 한 가지 밖엔 없죠:

our family was too strange and weird for even Santa Claus to come visit,

우리 가족은 너무 이상해서

산타 할아버지마저도 방문하고 싶지 않을 거란 것이었어요.

and my poor parents were trying to protect us from the embarrassment,

그리고 불쌍한 우리 부모님도 저희를 보호하고 싶으셨겠죠,

this humiliation of rejection by Santa, who was jolly --

항상 좋으신 산타 할아버지에게까지 굴욕을 당하니까요.

but let's face it, he was also very judgmental.

하지만, 잘 보면, 산타 할아버지도 진짜 비판적이었던 거 같아요.

So to find out that there was no Santa Claus at all

그래서 산타 할아버지가 없다는 걸 알아낸 것도 사실은 다행이었죠.

was actually sort of a relief.

I left the kitchen not really in shock about Santa,

전 부엌을 나왔습니다. 산타 할아버지에 대한 충격보단

but rather, I was just dumbfounded

그냥 제 자신이 아주 바보같이 느껴지더라고요.

about how I could have missed this whole age of reason thing.

이성의 나이에 대해 아무것도 모르고 있었다니...

It was too late for me, but maybe I could help someone else,

저한테는 이미 늦었지만, 아마도 제가 누군가는 도와줄 수 있지 않을까 생각했죠,

someone who could use the information.

누군가 이 정보를 사용할 수 있는 사람.

They had to fit two criteria:

두 가지의 기준에 꼭 맞는 사람:

they had to be old enough to be able to understand

그 누군가는 이해할 정도의 나이여야하고

the whole concept of the age of reason, and not yet seven.

그래야 이성의 나이를 알아먹을 수 있을 테니깐, 그리고 아직은 7살이 아닌 사람.

The answer was clear: my brother Bill. He was six.

답은 아주 확실하더군요; 저의 6살짜리 남동생 빌이요.

Well, I finally found Bill

그래서 집에서 한 블록 떨어진 곳 학교 운동장에서 빌을 찾았습니다

about a block away from our house at this public school playground.

토요일이었고요

It was a Saturday, and he was all by himself,

빌은 혼자 벽에다가 공을 차며 놀고 있었습니다

just kicking a ball against the side of a wall.

I ran up to him and said, "Bill!

전 달려가서 말했죠 "빌!

I just realized that the age of reason starts when you turn seven,

이성의 나이가 네가 7살이 되자마자 시작이 된데.

and then you're capable of committing any and all sins

그럼 그때부턴 넌 죄를 짓게 된데"

against God and man."

그런데 빌은 "그래서?" 제가 다시 말해줬습니다

And Bill said, "So?"

And I said, "So, you're six.

"그니깐 너 6살이잖아. 앞으로 1년 동안은 네가 하고 싶은 거 맘대로 해둬.

You have a whole year to do anything you want to and God won't notice it."

그래도 하느님이 모르실 거래" 빌이 또 대답했습니다 "그래서?"

And he said, "So?"

And I said, "So? So everything!"

"그래서라니. 모든 게 가능하다고!" 그리고 저는 뛰기 시작했습니다. 너무 빌에게 화가 나더군요.

And I turned to run. I was so angry with him.

But when I got to the top of the steps,

계단 가장 위에 다다랐을 때, 돌아서서 빌에게 소리쳤습니다

I turned around dramatically and said,

"그리고 있잖아, 빌, 산타 할아버지 같은 건 없어"

"Oh, by the way, Bill -- there is no Santa Claus."

Now, I didn't know it at the time,

그때는 몰랐는데,

but I really wasn't turning seven on September 10th.

제가 9월 10일에 7살이 되는 게 아니었더라고요.

For my 13th birthday,

저의 13살 생일 때, 친구들을 불러 파자마 파티를 할 계획이었거든요,

I planned a slumber party with all of my girlfriends,

but a couple of weeks beforehand my mother took me aside and said,

근데 생일 2주 전에 엄마가 절 따로 불러서는 말씀하시길,

"I need to speak to you privately.

"너랑 할 얘기가 있다.

September 10th is not your birthday. It's October 10th."

9월 10일은 너 생일이 아니란다. 너 생일은 10월 10일이야" 그래서 전 "뭐라고?"

And I said, "What?"

(Laughter)

And she said ...

(웃음)

엄마가 말씀하길 "그니깐. .유치원 들어갈 수 있는 날짜가 9월 15일에서 잘리더구나"

(Laughter)

"Listen. The cut-off date to start kindergarten was September 15th."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

"So I told them that your birthday was September 10th,

"그래서, 내가 유치원에 너 생일이 9월 10일이라 했어,

and then I wasn't sure

그리고 네가 혹시나 주위에 다 얘기하고 다닐까 봐,

that you weren't just going to go blab it all over the place,

so I started to tell you your birthday was September 10th.

너한테도 너 생일이 9월 10일이라고 해둔 거야.

But, Julie, you were so ready to start school, honey. You were so ready."

하지만 쥴리야, 넌 학교를 일찍 시작할 준비가 충분히 되어 있었단다. 정말 준비가 되어있었다고."

I thought about it, and when I was four,

제가 4살 때를 생각해 봤습니다,

I was already the oldest of four children,

and my mother even had another child to come,

so what I think she -- understandably -- really meant

Then she said, "Don't worry, Julie.

Every year on October 10th,

when it was your birthday but you didn't realize it,

I made sure that you ate a piece of cake that day."

Which was comforting, but troubling.

My mother had been celebrating my birthday with me, without me.

What was so upsetting about this new piece of information

이 이야기가 너무 화가 났던 건요

was not that I had to change the date of my slumber party

제가 친구들과 함께 계획한 파자마 파티의 날짜를

with all of my girlfriends.

바꿔야 하는 것이 아니라,

What was most upsetting was that this meant I was not a Virgo.

진짜 화가 났던 건 저의 별자리가 이젠 더는 처녀자리가 아니라는 거였어요.

I had a huge Virgo poster in my bedroom.

제 방에는 아주 큰 처녀자리 포스터도 붙어 있었고요,

And I read my horoscope every single day,

매일 운세도 읽으며 완전 내 얘기야 라고 생각했단 말이죠.

and it was so totally me.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And this meant that I was a Libra?

근데 이제부턴 제가 천칭자리라고요?

So, I took the bus downtown to get the new Libra poster.

그래서 시내에 천칭자리 포스터를 사러 갔습니다

The Virgo poster is a picture of a beautiful woman with long hair,

처녀자리는 긴 머리의 아름다운 여자가 있는 그림이었지만,

sort of lounging by some water,

물 옆에 누워있는 그림이었죠,

but the Libra poster is just a huge scale.

하지만, 천칭자리는 그냥 아주 큰 천칭 그림 딸랑 하나였습니다.

This was around the time that I started filling out physically,

이때부터 몸도 불어나기 시작했던 거 같아요

and I was filling out a lot more than a lot of the other girls,

다른 여자친구들보다 훨씬 많이요,

and frankly, the whole idea that my astrological sign was a scale

그리고 사실, 저의 별자리가 천칭이라는 게

just seemed ominous and depressing.

우울했습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But I got the new Libra poster,

하지만 전 새 천칭자리 포스터를 샀습니다

and I started to read my new Libra horoscope,

그리고 그날부턴 천칭자리 운세를 읽기 시작했습니다,

and I was astonished to find that it was also totally me.

그런데요 그것도 정말 모두 제 얘기더라고요.

(Laughter)

It wasn't until years later, looking back

그리고 나중에 생각해보게 됬죠

on this whole age-of-reason, change-of-birthday thing,

"이성의 나이"랑 변경된 생일날짜 일을 같이 놓고 생각했을 때,

that it dawned on me:

제가 7살이 된다고 생각했던 날에 7살이 되는게 아니라

I wasn't turning seven when I thought I turned seven.

하느님이 나를 주의깊게 보기 시작하기 전까지 맘대로 행동할 수 있는 기간이

I had a whole other month

to do anything I wanted to before God started keeping tabs on me.

한 달이나 남아있었다는 거죠.

Oh, life can be so cruel.

오, 삶이란 잔인하더군요.

One day, two Mormon missionaries came to my door.

어느 날, 두 명의 모르몬 교회 선교사가 저희 집에 왔습니다.

Now, I just live off a main thoroughfare in Los Angeles,

전 로스 엔젤레스로 들어가는 통로에 가까이 살았는데요

and my block is -- well, it's a natural beginning

저의 동네는 -- 시작점이였던 거죠

for people who are peddling things door to door.

집을 돌아다니며 물건을 파는 사람들에게는요.

Sometimes I get little old ladies from the Seventh Day Adventist Church

가끔은 제7일안식교에서 온 노인 두 분이 와서

showing me these cartoon pictures of heaven.

천국에 대한 만화를 보여주기도 했습니다.

And sometimes I get teenagers who promise me

그리고 어떤 날은, 청소년들이 와서는 불량모임에 들지 않고

that they won't join a gang and just start robbing people,

남의 물건을 훔치지 않을테니

if I only buy some magazine subscriptions from them.

그들로부터 잡지를 구독해야 한다고도 했습니다.

So normally, I just ignore the doorbell, but on this day, I answered.

그러니깐 당연시 제가 초인종을 무시하게 되죠, 하지만 이날은 대답했습니다.

And there stood two boys, each about 19, in white, starched short-sleeved shirts,

2명의 19살쯤 되어 보이는 남자아이들이 서 있었습니다.

잘 다려진 흰색 반소매셔츠에, 이름표를 달고 있었는데

and they had little name tags

that identified them as official representatives

이들의 복장에서 명확하게 알 수 있었죠.

이들이 예수 그리스도 후기 성도 교회의 사절단 이라는 걸요.

of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,

and they said they had a message for me, from God.

그들은 제게 하느님으로부터의 메시지가 있다고 하더군요.

I said, "A message for me? From God?" And they said, "Yes."

저는 "나에게 온 메시지라고? 하느님으로부터?" 그 둘은 "네"라고 대답했습니다.

Now, I was raised in the Pacific Northwest,

여기서 잠깐, 저는 Pacific Northwest에서 자랐습니다.

around a lot of Church of Latter-day Saints people and, you know,

그곳은 예수 그리스도 후기 성도 교인들이 많은 곳이죠,

I've worked with them and even dated them,

but I never really knew the doctrine,

or what they said to people when they were out on a mission,

and I guess I was sort of curious, so I said, "Well, please, come in."

And they looked really happy,

제 생각엔 보통 이렇게 들어오라는 경우가 거의 없는 것 같아요.

because I don't think this happens to them all that often.

(Laughter)

And I sat them down, and I got them glasses of water --

그들을 의자로 안내하고 물을 대접했습니다

Ok, I got it, I got it.

네, 됬어요. 제가 그들에게 물을 대접했습니다

I got them glasses of water.

Don't touch my hair, that's the thing.

머리 만지면 안돼요, 중요하다고요.

(Laughter)

You can't put a video of myself in front of me

내 자신이 나오는 비디오를 내 앞에 틀어놓고

and expect me not to fix my hair.

내게 머리손질을 못하게 할 순 없어요.

Ok.

(Laughter)

오케이. 그들을 의자로 안내하고 물을 대접했습니다.

So I sat them down and I got them glasses of water,

and after niceties, they said,

그 둘이 말했죠 "하느님이 당신을 그의 가슴으로 사랑한다고 믿으십니까?"

"Do you believe that God loves you with all his heart?"

And I thought, "Well, of course I believe in God,

생각하다가, "네, 물론요. 하느님을 믿습니다,

but you know, I don't like that word 'heart,'

하지만, heart(가슴)라는 말은 쓰기가 싫네요

because it anthropomorphizes God,

그건 하느님을 인간화 시키는 거잖아요,

and I don't like the word, 'his,' either, because that sexualizes God."

그리고 "그"라는 단언 또한 좀 불편해요 왜냐면 그건 하느님을 성별화 시키는 거니까요"

But I didn't want to argue semantics with these boys,

하지만 의미에 대해 이 두 친구들과 토론하고 싶지는 않았습니다,

so after a very long, uncomfortable pause, I said,

그래서 아~주 긴 불편한 침묵을 깨고 제가 대답했죠

"Yes, yes, I do. I feel very loved."

"네, 네 믿어요. 사랑 받고 있다고 느낍니다"

And they looked at each other and smiled,

그리고 그 둘은 서로를 쳐다보며 만족한 듯 웃었습니다

like that was the right answer.

마치 그것이 맞는 정답이라는 것처럼요. 그리고 다시 질문하길,

And then they said, "Do you believe

"그럼 당신은 여기 우리 모두가 형제고 자매라고 믿으십니까?"

that we're all brothers and sisters on this planet?"

And I said, "Yes, I do."

And I was so relieved that it was a question I could answer so quickly.

And they told me this story all about this guy named Lehi,

who lived in Jerusalem in 600 BC.

그는 600 BC경에 예루살렘에 살았답니다

Now, apparently in Jerusalem in 600 BC, everyone was completely bad and evil.

듣자하니, 600 BC 경 당시 예루살렘에는

모든 사람이 아주 나쁘고 악했다고 하더군요. 어느 누구도 빠짐없이 모두

Every single one of them: man, woman, child, infant, fetus.

남자, 여자, 아이들, 애기들, 태아까지도 말이에요.

And God came to Lehi and said to him,

하느님이 오셔서 Lehi에서 말씀하시길, "너의 가족을 배에 태워라

"Put your family on a boat and I will lead you out of here."

그리고 내가 너를 이곳에서 나가도록 인도할 것이다" 그리고 하느님이 그들을 인도하셔서

And God did lead them.

He led them to America.

미국으로 데리고 가셨답니다.

I said, "America?

제가 그 친구들에게 말했습니다 "미국? 예루살렘에서 배타고 미국으로? 600 BC에?"

(Laughter)

From Jerusalem to America by boat in 600 BC?"

And they said, "Yes."

그러자 그 둘은 "네"라고 대답했습니다.

(Laughter)

Then they told me how Lehi and his descendants

Lehi와 그의 자손들이

reproduced and reproduced, and over the course of 600 years,

600년간 그의 자손들을 낳고 또 낳고

there were two great races of them, the Nephites and the Lamanites,

천국으로 올라가시면서 미국에 들려 Nephites를 방문했습니다.

he stopped by America and visited the Nephites.

(Laughter)

And he told them that if they all remained totally, totally good --

그리고 말씀하시 길, 만약 그들이 진짜 진짜 착하게 남는다면 --

한 명도 빠짐없이 모두 --

each and every one of them --

they would win the war against the evil Lamanites.

그들은 악한 Lamanites와의 전쟁에서 승리할 것이라고 했습니다.

But apparently somebody blew it,

하지만 아무래도 누군가는 지키지 못한것 같아요.

because the Lamanites were able to kill all the Nephites.

Lamanites가 Nephites를 죽일수 있었거든요.

All but one guy, this guy named Mormon,

그 중 단 한 사람, 모몬이라는 사람은

who managed to survive by hiding in the woods.

나무속에 숨어 살아남았습니다.

And he made sure this whole story was written down

그리고 그는 이 얘기를 꼭 전달 할 수 있도록

in reformed Egyptian hieroglyphics chiseled onto gold plates,

금판 위에 이집트 상형문자를 새겼지요.

which he then buried near Palmyra, New York.

그리고 뉴욕, Palmyra근처에 묻었습니다.

Well, I was just on the edge of my seat.

I said, "What happened to the Lamanites?"

And they said, "Well, they became our Native Americans, here in the U.S."

And I said, "So, you believe the Native Americans are descended

from a people who were totally evil?"

악했던 자들의 자손이라 믿는 겁니까?"라고 묻자 그 둘은 "네"라고 대답했어요.

And they said, "Yes."

Then they told me how this guy named Joseph Smith

죠셉 스미스라는 남자가

found those buried gold plates right in his backyard,

그의 뒷마당에 묻혀있던 금판을 발견했다고 합니다

and he also found this magic stone back there that he put into his hat

그는 마술의 돌을 찾아서 그의 모자 안에 넣었구요,

그 모자에 얼굴을 넣었더니,

and then buried his face into,

and this allowed him to translate the gold plates

이집트 상형문자로 기록된 금판의 내용을 영어로 해석 할 수 있는 능력이 생겼답니다.

from the reformed Egyptian into English.

Well, at this point I just wanted to give these two boys some advice

about their pitch.

I wanted to say --

정말 "앞으론 이 이야기로 시작하지 말아라."라고 얘기하고 싶었습니다.

"Ok, don't start with this story."

(Laughter)

I mean, even the Scientologists

제 말은, Scientologists조차도 시작하기 전 성격 테스트부터 하잖아요 --

know to start with a personality test before they start --

telling people all about Xenu, the evil intergalactic overlord.

그리고 그 악의 은하계 신, Xenu에 대해 얘길 하지 않습니까.

Then, they said, "Do you believe that God speaks to us

그리고 그 친구들이 제게 물었습니다 "당신은 하느님이 공정한 예언자를 통해

through his righteous prophets?"

우리에게 계시를 주신다고 믿습니까?" 그리고 전 "아니요"라고 대답했죠.

And I said, "No, I don't,"

because I was sort of upset about this Lamanite story

왜냐면 제가 그 Lamanite 이야기에 좀 기분이 안 좋아 있었거든요

그리고 그 이상한 금판 이야기도요, 하지만 진실은

and this crazy gold plate story,

but the truth was, I hadn't really thought this through,

이것에 대해 제대로 생각해 본적이 없으니깐 다시 침착하게 대답했습니다,

so I backpedaled a little and I said,

"Well, what exactly do you mean by 'righteous'?

"어, 공평하시다는 게 무슨 뜻입니까?

And what do you mean by prophets? Like, could the prophets be women?"

그리고 예언자는 또 무엇이구요? 예를 들어, 여자가 예언자가 될 수도 있습니까?"

And they said, "No." And I said, "Why?"

그리고 그 둘은 "아니요"라고 말했고 저는 "왜 안돼냐고" 되물었죠. 그 둘이 말하길

And they said, "Well, it's because God gave women a gift

"왜냐면 하느님은 여성에게 아주 특별한 선물을 주셨고,

that is so spectacular,

it is so wonderful, that the only gift he had left over to give men

was the gift of prophecy."

What is this wonderful gift God gave women, I wondered?

그럼 하느님이 여자에게 주셨다는 선물은 도대체 뭔가요?

아마도 협동잘하고 순응하는 능력일까요?

Maybe their greater ability to cooperate and adapt?

(Laughter)

Women's longer lifespan?

아님 여성의 긴 수명? 그것도 아님 여자가 남자보다

The fact that women tend to be much less violent than men?

폭력적이지 않다는 거? 하지만, 아니었습니다. 그런 선물이 아니었어요.

But no -- it wasn't any of these gifts.

They said, "Well, it's her ability to bear children."

그들은 "생명을 잉태할 수 있는 능력이요"라고 했습니다.

I said, "Oh, come on.

제가 말했죠, "오, 제발. 여자들이 아이를 가지려고

I mean, even if women tried to have a baby every single year

15살부터 45살이 될 때까지 매년 노력한다고해도

from the time they were 15 to the time they were 45,

assuming they didn't die from exhaustion,

(힘들어서 죽지 않는 이상 말이죠)

it still seems like some women would have some time left over

여성들에겐 하나님의 음성을 들을 시간이 남아있지 않겠어요?

to hear the word of God."

라고 하자 그들은 '아니요' 라고 답했어요.

And they said, "No."

(Laughter)

Well, then they didn't look so fresh-faced and cute to me any more,

그리고, 그 두 친구들이 더이상 천진난만하고 귀여워 보이진 않았습니다.

하지만 그 둘은 제게 더 할말이 있었어요

but they had more to say.

They said, "Well, we also believe that if you're a Mormon,

"그리고, 우리는 당신이 모르몬 신자이고

and if you're in good standing with the church,

교회에 헌신적이면, 죽어서도

when you die, you get to go to heaven

천국에 갈 수있고, 영원히 사랑하는 가족과 있을 수 있다고 믿습니다."

and be with your family for all eternity."

And I said, "Oh, dear.

그리고 저는 "오, 이런 --

(Laughter)

That wouldn't be such a good incentive for me."

-- 그건 그리 좋은 보너스 같진 않는데."

(Laughter)

And they said, "Oh.

그리고 계속 말하길 "오 -- 또 우리가 믿는 것은

(Laughter)

Hey! Well, we also believe that when you go to heaven,

당신이 천국에 가면 당신 몸은 본래의 최상의 상태로

you get your body restored to you in its best original state.

돌아가게 됩니다.

Like, if you'd lost a leg, well, you get it back.

말하자면, 당신이 다리를 잃었다면, 다시 가질 수 있는거죠.

Or, if you'd gone blind, you could see."

아님, 당신이 봉사가 되었다면, 다시 볼 수 있다던지"

I said, "Oh. Now, I don't have a uterus,

제가 말했죠 "오 --전 지금 자궁이 없는데요 왜냐면

because I had cancer a few years ago.

몇년전 암이 생겨서. 그럼 제가 천국을 가면

So does this mean that if I went to heaven,

I would get my old uterus back?"

저 예전의 자궁을 돌려받는다는 겁니까?" 그들이 "당연하죠" 했다.

And they said, "Sure."

And I said, "I don't want it back. I'm happy without it." Gosh.

"하지만 난 그거 없이도 행복합니다" 이런.

What if you had a nose job and you liked it?

만약 코 성형을 했는데 새코가 맘에 든다면 어쩔 겁니까?

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Would God force you to get your old nose back?

하느님이 다시 옛날 코로 돌아가게 할 껀가요?

Then they gave me this Book of Mormon,

그리고, 그들이 모르몬 성경책을 제게 줬습니다.

told me to read this chapter and that chapter,

그리곤, 성경의 이런 저런 장 을 읽으라고 권했어요.

and said they'd come back and check in on me,

그리고, 언제 한번 다시 들린다고도 했고요.

그래서 제가 아마 "서두를 필요는 없어요"라고 했던 것 같습니다.

and I think I said something like, "Please don't hurry,"

아님, "제발 그러지 마세요"라던가 그리고 그들은 집을 나갔습니다.

or maybe just, "Please don't," and they were gone.

Ok, so I initially felt really superior to these boys,

네, 전 제가 이 두 친구보다 정말 한 수 위라고 느끼고

and smug in my more conventional faith.

그냥 제가 배워왔던 믿음에 잘난체하고 있었죠.

But then the more I thought about it, the more I had to be honest with myself.

하지만 더 생각하고, 내 자신에게 솔직할수록

누군가 제 집에 와서 천주교의 신학에 대해 얘기하고

If someone came to my door

and I was hearing Catholic theology and dogma for the very first time,

교리에 대해 처음으로 듣게 된다면 그리고 그 사람이,

and they said, "We believe that God impregnated a very young girl

"우리는 하느님이 아주 젊은 여자를 임신하게 했는데

without the use of intercourse,

성관계가 없이,

and the fact that she was a virgin is maniacally important to us."

그리고 그 여자가 순결했다고 얘길 하죠 --

(Laughter)

"And she had a baby, and that's the son of God,"

-- 그리고 그녀가 아이를 낳았고, 그 아이가 하느님의 아들이었다."

I mean, I would think that's equally ridiculous.

말하자면, 저는 그게 정말 이상하다 여길 것 같아요.

I'm just so used to that story.

전 이야기에 익숙해서 그런지 모르겠지만 말이에요.

(Laughter)

So, I couldn't let myself feel condescending towards these boys.

그러다 보니, 제 자신이 이 두 친구들에게 겸손하게 굴지 못하겠더라구요.

But the question they asked me when they first arrived

하지만 그들이 처음 도착했을 때 물었던 질문은

제 머리 속에서 떠나질 않았어요:

really stuck in my head:

Did I believe that God loved me with all his heart?

하느님인 그의 온 가슴을 다하여 나를 사랑한다는 걸 믿느냐고요?

Because I wasn't exactly sure how I felt about that question.

저도 그 질문에 제가 뭘 느꼈었는지는 잘 모르겠어요.

하지만, 만약 그들이 이렇게 물었다면,

Now, if they had asked me,

"Do you feel that God loves you with all his heart?"

하느님이 그의 온 마음을 다하여 당신을 사랑한다는 걸 느끼십니까?

Well, that would have been much different, I think I would have instantly answered,

그렇다면 많이 달랐을 꺼 같았습니다, 그리고 저도 바로 대답할 수 있었을 꺼 같고요

"네, 네, 전 항상 느낍니다. 제가 상처받고 혼란스러울 때도 그의 사랑을 느낍니다,

"Yes, yes, I feel it all the time.

I feel God's love when I'm hurt and confused,

and I feel consoled and cared for.

제가 힘을 얻고 보호를 받습니다. 저는 하느님의 사랑아래 보호받는 거죠

I take shelter in God's love when I don't understand why tragedy hits,

비극이 나를 치는 그 순간에까지도요,

and I feel God's love when I look with gratitude at all the beauty I see."

그리고 저는 하느님의 사랑을 제가 보는 모든 아름다움에서도 느낍니다."

But since they asked me that question with the word "believe" in it,

하지만 그들이 믿느냐는 단어를 사용했기에

somehow it was all different,

모든 것이 너무나도 달랐지요,

because I wasn't exactly sure if I believed what I so clearly felt.

왜냐면 내가 강하게 느끼는 것을 믿는다는 것이 이상하지 않습니까.
