정말 흥미로왔던 것은

One of the interesting things, of course,

악기를 다루는 손과 기술의 조화, 그리고

is the combination of that raw hand on the instrument and technology,

젊은이들에게 귀기울여 보라고 했던 그의 말이었습니다

and what he said about listening to our young people.

Of course, my job is all about listening.

물론, 음악을 듣는 일이 제 직업의 전부구요

And my aim, really, is to teach the world to listen.

저의 목표는 세상 사람들에게 음악듣는 법을 알리는 것입니다

That's my only real aim in life.

그게 제 인생에서 유일한 목표죠

And it sounds quite simple, but actually, it's quite a big, big job.

쉬워 보이지지만, 정말로 대단한 일이에요

Because you know, when you look at a piece of music, for example,

if I just open my little motorbike bag --

가방을 좀 열어볼께요 -- 가지고 온 게 있을거에요

we have here, hopefully,

a piece of music that is full of little black dots on the page.

And, you know, we open it up ...

악보를 펼치고 음악을 읽어 내려가는 겁니다

And I read the music.

So technically, I can actually read this.

엄밀히 따지자면, 전 단지 이 악보를 읽는거죠

I will follow the instructions, the tempo markings, the dynamics.

지시대로 따라 가는거에요, 박자나 강약 표시대로

I will do exactly as I'm told.

악보가 하라는 대로 따를 뿐입니다.

And so therefore, because time is short,

그러니까-- 시간이 별로 없으니까요

if I just played you, literally, the first, maybe, two lines or so --

조금만 연주를 해서 들려 드리는게 이해가 빠르겠네요

It's very straightforward; there's nothing too difficult about the piece.

별로 어렵지 않은 곡인데요

여기보면 꽤 빠른 곡이라고 되어 있네요

But here, I'm being told that the piece of music is very quick.

드럼의 어느 부분를 쳐야 하는지 쓰여있구요

I'm being told where to play on the drum.

I'm being told which part of the stick to use.

스틱의 어느 부분으로 쳐야 하는지도 써 있네요

And I'm being told the dynamic.

강약 표시도 되어 있구요

And I'm also being told that the drum is without snares.

그리고, 드럼은 스네어(울림줄)를 풀어야 한다고 되어 있습니다

Snares on, snares off.

스네어가 있는 상태고, 이제 풀었습니다

So therefore, if I translate this piece of music,

자 그럼, 악보대로 해석을 해보자면 이런 느낌이죠

we have this idea.

And so on.

My career would probably last about five years.

However, what I have to do as a musician

하지만, 음악가라면 악보에 없는 것도 연주할 수 있어야 합니다

is do everything that is not on the music;

everything that there isn't time to learn from a teacher,

수업시간에 배울 수 있는 것도 아니고

or to talk about, even, from a teacher.

말로 표현하거나 선생님이 가르쳐주는 것도 아니죠

But it's the things you notice when you're not actually with your instrument

악기가 없어도 알 수 있는 것들이 있습니다

that, in fact, become so interesting, and that you want to explore

through this tiny, tiny surface of a drum.

흥미로운 것들이요

So there, we experience the translation.

Now we'll experience the interpretation.

Now my career may last a little longer.

But in a way, you know, it's the same if I look at you

and I see a nice, bright young lady with a pink top on.

I see that you're clutching a teddy bear, etc., etc.

테디베어를 꼭 끌어안고 있고, 기타 등등

So I get a basic idea as to what you might be about,

what you might like, what you might do as a profession, etc., etc.

However, that's just the initial idea I may have that we all get

when we actually look and we try to interpret.

But actually it's so unbelievably shallow.

In the same way, I look at the music; I get a basic idea;

똑같아요. 악보를 보고 기본적인거부터 생각합니다

I wonder what technically might be hard, or, you know, what I want to do.

어려운 부분은 뭔지, 어떻게 연주해야 하는지

Just the basic feeling.

이건 단지 기본적인 느낌이죠

However, that is simply not enough.

하지만 그것만으로는 부족합니다

And I think what Herbie said: please listen, listen.

허비행콕씨가 이런 말을 했죠. "제발 들어요, 들어보세요"

We have to listen to ourselves, first of all.

우리는 우리 자신의 소리부터 들어야 합니다. 다른 무엇보다도요

If I play, for example, holding the stick --

where literally I do not let go of the stick --

you'll experience quite a lot of shock coming up through the arm.

And you feel really quite -- believe it or not --

detached from the instrument and from the stick,

even though I'm actually holding the stick quite tightly.

By holding it tightly, I feel strangely more detached.

If I just simply let go

만약 살짝 풀어서 잡고, 손이나 팔이 가는대로 그냥 받쳐주듯이 치면요

and allow my hand, my arm, to be more of a support system,

suddenly --

갑자기-- 힘을 덜 들이고도 더욱 역동적으로 변합니다. 훨씬 더요

I have more dynamic with less effort.

Much more --

(Drum sound)

and I just feel, at last, one with the stick

그래서 결국, 스틱이나 드럼과 하나가 된듯이 느껴집니다

and one with the drum.

And I'm doing far, far less.

점점 더 힘도 덜 들게되구요

So in the same way that I need time with this instrument,

I need time with people in order to interpret them.

사람들의 내면을 이해하기 위해서는 시간이 필요해요

Not just translate them, but interpret them.

단지 상대를 해석하는 것이아니라, 이해하기 위해서요

If, for example, I play just a few bars of a piece of music

예를들어서, 몇 소절만 연주해 볼께요

for which I think of myself as a technician --

연주의 기술적인 면만 생각한다면요

that is, someone who is basically a percussion player --

And so on, if I think of myself as a musician --

There is a little bit of a difference there that is worth just --

And I remember when I was 12 years old,

and I started playing timpani and percussion,

and my teacher said,

"Well, how are we going to do this? You know, music is about listening."

And I said, "Yes, I agree with that, so what's the problem?"

제가 대답했죠. "네 그래요. 그런데 뭔가 문제죠?"

And he said, "Well, how are you going to hear this?

선생님 말씀이, "이 소리는 어떻게 들을거지? 저 소리는 어떻게 듣니"

How are you going to hear that?"

And I said, "Well, how do you hear it?"

"그럼 선생님은 어떻게 듣는데요?"

He said, "Well, I think I hear it through here."

"여기를 통해서 듣는거지"

And I said, "Well, I think I do too, but I also hear it through my hands,

전 대답했습니다. "음, 저도 그래요. 그런데 저는 손을 통해서도 듣고

through my arms, cheekbones, my scalp,

팔이나, 광대뼈, 머리, 배, 가슴, 다리 같은 곳으로도 듣거든요"

my tummy, my chest, my legs and so on."

And so we began our lessons every single time

그리고, 수업은 늘 드럼을 조율하는 것으로 시작했는데요

tuning drums, in particular, the kettle drums, or timpani

특히 케틀드럼이나 팀파니같은 악기들의

to such a narrow pitch interval, so something like --

아주 미세한 음정을 조율하는거죠, 예를들면 --

that of a difference.

Then gradually:

And it's amazing that when you do open your body up,

and open your hand up to allow the vibration to come through,

that in fact the tiny, tiny difference --

정말로 아주 미세한 음정의 차이가

can be felt with just the tiniest part of your finger, there.

And so what we would do is that I would put my hands

on the wall of the music room,

and together, we would "listen" to the sounds of the instruments,

and really try to connect with those sounds

far, far more broadly than simply depending on the ear.

Because of course, the ear is subject to all sorts of things.

The room we happen to be in, the amplification,

the quality of the instrument, the type of sticks --

Same amount of weight, but different sound colors.

And that's basically what we are; we're just human beings,

but we all have our own little sound colors, as it were,

똑같은 사람이지만 우리는 각자의 음색을 갖습니다.

that make up these extraordinary personalities and characters

독특한 개성, 성격, 취미,

그 외에 모든 것이 다르죠

and interests and things.

And as I grew older, I then auditioned

그리고, 좀 더 나이가 든 후에, 런던에 있는 왕립음악원에 오디션을 보러 갔습니다

for the Royal Academy of Music in London,

and they said, "Well, no, we won't accept you, because we haven't a clue,

거기서 이런말을 했어요. "당신을 입학시킬 수 없습니다.

you know, of the future of a so-called 'deaf musician.'"

'청각장애를 가진 음악가'의 미래를 보장할 수가 없어요"

And I just couldn't quite accept that.

And so therefore, I said to them, "Well, look, if you refuse --

if you refuse me through those reasons,

as opposed to the ability to perform

and to understand and love the art of creating sound --

then we have to think very, very hard about the people you do actually accept."

And as a result, once we got over a little hurdle,

and having to audition twice,

they accepted me.

And not only that,

what had happened was that it changed the whole role of the music institutions

입학규정이 완전히 바뀌게 되었죠

throughout the United Kingdom.

Under no circumstances were they to refuse

어떠한 이유로도 입학지원을 거절할 수 없도록 규정이 바뀐 거에요

any application whatsoever

on the basis of whether someone had no arms, no legs --

설령 팔과 다리가 없는 불구의 상태라 하더라도

they could still perhaps play a wind instrument if it was supported on a stand.

악기를 스탠드에 올려놓고 입으로 불어서 연주할 수 있으니까요.

어떤 신체조건이라도 이를 이유로 입학을 거부할 수 없고

No circumstances at all were used to refuse any entry.

And every single entry had to be listened to, experienced,

모든 지원자의 연주를 반드시 직접 듣고, 느낀 후에

and then, based on the musical ability,

음악적 재능에 근거해서 입학여부를 판단해야 합니다

then that person could either enter or not.

And so therefore, this in turn meant

그 결과로, 대단히 흥미로운 재능을 가진 많은 학생들이

that there was an extremely interesting bunch of students

여러 음악학교에 들어갈 수 있게 되었습니다

who arrived in these various music institutions,

and I have to say, many of them now in the professional orchestras

그리고, 이제는 그 학생들의 대다수가

전 세계에서 오케스트라 단원으로 활약하고 있구요

throughout the world.

The interesting thing about this as well, though --

하지만, 가장 흥미로운 점은 말이죠

is quite simply that not only were people connected with sound --

흥미로운 점은 모든 사람들이 음악과 교감하고 있다는 것입니다

which is basically all of us --

음악은 우리의 일상을 치유해주는 치료제와 같다는 점을 잘 알고 있죠

we well know that music really is our daily medicine.

I say "music," but actually I mean "sound."

음악이라고 표현했지만, 사실은 소리 자체가 그렇습니다

Because some of the extraordinary things I've experienced as a musician --

왜냐하면, 음악가로서 저는 특별한 일들을 경험했는데요

15살짜리 아이가 있다고 치죠

when you may have a 15-year-old lad

who has got the most incredible challenges,

엄청난 장애를 가지고 있는 아이에요

who may not be able to control his movements,

자기 몸도 제대로 가누지 못하고

who may be deaf, who may be blind, etc., etc. --

소리도 못 듣고, 볼 수도 없고, 등등

suddenly, if that young lad sits close to this instrument,

어느 날, 그 아이가 이 악기에 가까이 앉습니다

and perhaps even lies underneath the marimba,

혹은 어쩌면 이 마림바 밑에 누울 수도 있겠네요

and you play something that's so incredibly organ-like, almost --

그리고 그때 당신은 오르간을 치듯이 연주를 합니다

I don't really have the right sticks, perhaps --

적당한 스틱이 없긴하지만, 어쩌면 --

but something like this -- let me change --

이런 느낌이요-- 바꿔잡아야 겠네요

Something that's so unbelievably simple --

너무도 단순하지만

but he would be experiencing something that I wouldn't be,

because I'm on top of the sound.

왜냐면 전 소리를 위에서 듣고 있고

I have the sound coming this way.

이 방향으로 들려오는 소리죠

He would have the sound coming through the resonators.

그 아이는 이 공명기를 통해서 전해지는 소리를 듣게 되죠

If there were no resonators on here, we would have:

만약 공명기가 없다면, 이렇게 들리겠죠

So he would have a fullness of sound

그래서 그는 더 풍부한 소리를 느끼게 됩니다.

that those of you in the front few rows wouldn't experience,

those of you in the back few rows wouldn't experience, either.

Every single one of us, depending on where we're sitting,

우리 각자가 어디에 앉아 있느냐에 따라

will experience this sound quite, quite differently.

다른 소리를 경험하게 됩니다. 전혀 달라요

And of course, being the participator of the sound,

물론, 소리를 만드는 사람으로서는

and that is, starting from the idea of what type of sound

I want to produce, for example, this sound:

Can you hear anything?

Exactly -- because I'm not even touching it.

그래도 뭔가 일어나고 있다는 느낌은 들죠

But yet, we get the sensation of something happening.

In the same way that when I see a tree moves,

나무의 흔들림을 보면서

then I imagine that tree making a rustling sound.

바스락거리는 소리를 상상하는 것과 마찬가지에요

Do you see what I mean?

이해되시나요?

Whatever the eye sees, then there's always sound happening.

눈에 보이는 모든 것, 그 곳에는 소리가 있습니다

So there's always, always that huge --

그러니까 언제나, 늘상 그 엄청난 --

I mean, just this kaleidoscope of things to draw from.

말하자면, 만화경을 통해 바라보는 세상과도 같죠

So all of my performances are based on entirely what I experience,

제가 하는 연주들은 모두, 제가 경험했던 것들에서 나옵니다

and not by learning a piece of music,

putting on someone else's interpretation of it,

buying all the CDs possible of that particular piece of music,

and so on and so forth,

because that isn't giving me enough of something that is so raw and so basic,

and something that I can fully experience the journey of.

So it may be that, in certain halls,

and so therefore, my level of soft, gentle playing may have to be --

Do you see what I mean?

So, because of this explosion in access to sound,

especially through the Deaf community,

this has not only affected how music institutions,

how schools for the deaf treat sound, and not just as a means of therapy --

음악을 대하는 방법에 영향을 미쳤습니다. 단지 치료목적이 아니더라도요--

although, of course, being a participator of music,

that definitely is the case as well --

분명히 치료목적도 있다고 할 수 있죠.

but it's meant that acousticians have had to really think

about the types of halls they put together.

There are so few halls in this world

that actually have very good acoustics, dare I say.

음향시설만 잘 되어 있다면, 상상할 수 있는 모든 연주를 할 수 있습니다

But by that I mean, where you can absolutely do anything you imagine.

The tiniest, softest, softest sound to something that is so broad,

너무나 작고, 부드럽고, 은은한 소리도 넓고,

so huge, so incredible.

크고, 놀라운 소리로 퍼져나가죠. 그런데 보통은 뭔가 --

There's always something:

it may sound good up there, may not be so good there;

저 위에서는 듣기 좋지만, 이쪽에서는 별로이고

it may be great there, but terrible up there;

저쪽은 휼룽한데, 저 위는 끔찍한 소리고

maybe terrible over there, but not too bad there, etc., etc.

저쪽은 끔찍하고, 이쪽은 들을만하고, 기타 등등

So to find an actual hall is incredible --

진짜 제대로된 콘서트홀을 찾는 건 기적같은 일이죠.

for which you can play exactly what you imagine,

상상하는 그대로 연주할 수 있는 그런 홀이요

without it being cosmetically enhanced.

장식이 화려할 필요도 없어요

So therefore, acousticians are actually in conversation

그래서, 실제로 음향전문가들은 청각장애자들과 음악가들의

with people who are hearing impaired,

의견을 듣고 고려해야 합니다.

and who are participators of sound.

And this is quite interesting.

그리고 참 재밌는 일도 있는데요

I cannot give you any detail

연주회에서 실제로 일어나는 일들을 지금 자세하게 얘기할 수는 없지만

as far as what is actually happening with those halls,

실제로, 고정관념을 가진 많은 사람들로부터

but it's just the fact that they are going to a group of people

for whom so many years, we've been saying,

"Well, how on earth can they experience music? They're deaf."

"세상에, 저 사람들 소리를 어떻게 듣는거지? 귀머거리잖아."

We go like that, and we imagine that's what deafness is about.

단순히 이렇게 하면, 소리가 안들린다는게 뭔지 상상할 수 있죠

Or we go like that, and we imagine that's what blindness is about.

아니면 이렇게 하면, 앞이 안보인다는 뭔지 상상할 수 있어요

우리는 휠체어에 앉아있는 사람을 보면, 걷지 못할 거라고 생각하죠

If we see someone in a wheelchair, we assume they cannot walk.

It may be that they can walk three, four, five steps.

그런데 만약 그 사람이 셋, 넷, 다섯 걸음이라도 걷는다면, 그건 걸을 수 있다는 걸 의미하는 거에요

That, to them, means they can walk.

In a year's time, it could be two extra steps.

일년 정도 지나서, 두 걸음 정도 더 걷게 될 수도 있고

In another year's time, three extra steps.

또 일년이 지나서, 세걸음 더 걸을 수도 있겠죠

Those are hugely important aspects to think about.

그런 것들이 너무나도 중요한 면입니다

So when we do listen to each other,

그러니까 서로의 소리를 들을 때야말로

it's unbelievably important for us

소리를 듣는 능력을 시험해 볼 수 있는 정말 좋은 기회이고

to really test our listening skills,

to really use our bodies as a resonating chamber,

몸 전체를 통해서 들을 수 있어야 합니다. 비판은 접어두고 말이죠

to stop the judgment.

For me, as a musician who deals with 99 percent of new music,

저의 경우에, 다루는 곡의 99%가 신곡이기때문에

it's very easy for me to say,

단순히 이렇게 말해 버립니다. "그래 그 곡 괜찮네. " 혹은

"Oh yes, I like that piece. No, I don't like that piece," and so on.

"아냐, 그 곡은 별로야" 라고요

And I just find that I have to give those pieces of music real time.

그래도, 그런 곡들에도 시간과 관심을 가져야 한다는 생각이 들었습니다

It may be that the chemistry isn't quite right between myself

그 곡이 저 한테는 잘 맞지 않을수도 있겠죠

and that particular piece of music,

but that doesn't mean I have the right to say it's a bad piece of music.

그렇다고 저에게 어떤 음악이 나쁘다고 말할 권리는 없잖아요

And you know, one of the great things about being a musician

하지만 음악가로서 가장 좋은 점 중의 하나는

is that it is so unbelievably fluid.

너무나도 자유롭다는 거에요

So there are no rules, no right, no wrong, this way, that way.

규칙, 옳고 그름, 이 방법, 저 방법.. 정해진 것이 없죠

If I asked you to clap -- maybe I can do this.

만약 "박수 부탁드립니다" 라고 말하면 천둥소리를 만들어내는거에요

I'm assuming we've all experienced thunder.

다들 천둥소리 들어보셨으리라 생각되는데요

Now, I don't mean just the sound;

단순히 소리를 의미하는게 아니라

I mean really listen to that thunder within yourselves.

여러분 속에 있는 천둥소리를 들어보라는 의미입니다

And please try to create that through your clapping.

그럼 박수로 천둥소리를 만들어보세요. 해보세요. 그냥 한번 해보세요

Try, just -- please try.

좋아요. 눈이요. 눈. 눈내리는 소리 들어보셨나요?

The interesting thing here, though, is that I asked a group of kids

exactly the same question.

Now -- great imagination, thank you very much.

However, not one of you got out of your seats to think,

"Right! How can I clap?

OK, maybe:

Maybe I can use my jewelry to create extra sounds.

-- 장신구를 이용해서 다른 소리를 만들 수도 있고

Maybe I can use the other parts of my body to create extra sounds."

우리 몸을 이용해서 또 다른 소리를 만들 수도 있겠지"

Not a single one of you thought about clapping in a slightly different way

여기 어느 누구도 다른 방법의 박수소리를 생각하지 못했어요

other than sitting in your seats there and using two hands.

그대로 자리에 앉아서 두 손을 이용했을 뿐이죠

In the same way, when we listen to music,

음악을 들을 때도 마찬가지입니다

we assume that it's all being fed through here.

모든 소리가 -- 이 곳을 통해서 들어온다고 생각하죠

This is how we experience music.

이것이 음악을 느끼는 방법일까요? 물론 아니죠

Of course, it's not.

We experience thunder, thunder, thunder.

천둥소리를 느끼는 겁니다 -- 천둥, 천둥. 상상해. 상상해. 상상해

Think, think, think.

Listen, listen, listen.

듣고. 듣고. 듣자. 이제 어떻게 천둥소리를 내죠?

Now, what can we do with thunder?

I remember my teacher, when I first started, my very first lesson,

제가 처음 레슨받을때의 선생님이 생각나네요

I was all prepared with sticks, ready to go.

레슨을 위해서 스틱까지 준비해 갔는데요.

And instead of him saying, "OK, Evelyn, please, feet slightly apart,

보통 선생님이라면 이렇게 말했겠죠, " 그래 에버린, 발은 조금 벌리고,

arms at a more or less 90-degree angle, sticks in a more or less V shape,

팔의 각도는 90도 정도로 하고, 스틱은 V자 모양으로 잡고,

keep this amount of space here, etc.

이 정도 공간은 유지하고, 등등

Please keep your back straight, etc., etc., etc." --

등은 곧게 세우고, 등등"

where I was just probably going to end up absolutely rigid, frozen,

이렇게 하면 아마도 몸이 완전히 굳어버려서

and I would not be able to strike the drum

드럼을 칠 수 조차 없을거에요

because I was thinking of so many other things,

자세를 잡기위해 여러가지를 생각해야 할 테니까요.

he said, "Evelyn, take this drum away for seven days,

그런데 그 선생님은 "에버린, 집에 드럼을 가지고 가거라. 그럼 다음주에 보자" 이렇게 말씀하셨죠

and I'll see you next week."

So -- heavens! What was I to do?

세상에.. 어떻게 하라는거지? 스틱도 없이..

I no longer required the sticks.

I wasn't allowed to have these sticks.

왜냐하면 선생님이 스틱사용을 금지시켰거든요

I had to basically look at this particular drum,

처음에는 드럼을 그냥 쳐다 보기만 했습니다

see how it was made,

그러다가, 뭘로 만들어졌나, 이 튀어나온 부분은 뭘까, 이 스네어는 뭔가,

what these little lugs did, what the snares did.

Turned it upside down, experimented with the shell.

뒤집어 보기도 하고, 손을 오므려서 연주해 보기도 하고, 손끝으로도 쳐보고,

Experimented with the head.

(Drum sounds)

Experimented with my body.

온 몸으로도 쳐보고, 장신구로도 쳐보고,

Experimented with jewelry.

Experimented with all sorts of things.

여러가지로 연주를 해보았습니다

And of course, I returned with all sorts of bruises.

아 물론, 그러다보면 멍도 들고 상처가 나기도 했죠

(Laughter)

그래도, 이건 놀라운 경험이었습니다

But nevertheless, it was such an unbelievable experience,

because where on earth are you going to experience that in a piece of music?

악보를 통해서 이런 걸 경험할 수 있을까요?

Where on earth are you going to experience that in a study book?

아니면, 책을 통해서 이런 경험을 할 수 있을까요?

So we never, ever dealt with actual study books.

그때 선생님은 책을 전혀 사용하지 않으셨어요

So for example, one of the things that we learn

예를 들면, 보통은 이런 걸 배우죠

when we are dealing with being a percussion player

음악가가 아니라, 단순히 타악기 연주자가 되기 위한 기본은 --

as opposed to a musician,

is basically, straightforward single-stroke rolls.

가장 쉬운 것은 싱글스트로크롤 주법인데요

Like that, and then we get a little faster --

이런 거죠. 그리고 좀 더 빨리. 그리고 더 빨리. 더 빨리.

and a little faster --

(Drum sounds)

and a little faster, and so on and so forth.

이런 식인데요. 이 악보대로 치려면 어떻게 하죠?

What does this piece require?

Single-stroke rolls.

싱글스트로크 주법이죠. 그럼 왜 전 그런 것들부터 배우지 않았을까요?

So why can't I then do that whilst learning a piece of music?

And that's exactly what he did.

그게 바로 그 선생님의 방식이었어요.

And interestingly, the older I became, and when I became a full-time student

재밌는건, 더 성장한 후에, 이른바 음학원이라는 곳에 들어갔을 때는

at a so-called "music institution," all of that went out of the window.

모든 게 바뀌어 버렸습니다.

We had to study from study books.

책을 가지고만 공부해야 했어요

And constantly, the question, "Well, why? Why? What is this relating to?

늘 그게 의문이었요. 도대체 왜? 이게 무슨 관계가 있지?

I need to play a piece of music."

음악을 연주하고 싶었지만, "다 연주에 도움이 되는거야" 라고 하더군요

"Well, this will help your control."

"Well, how? Why do I need to learn that?

어떻게? 왜 책에 있는 걸 배워야 하지? 난 연주를 통해서 배우고 싶은데..

I need to relate it to a piece of music.

You know, I need to say something.

전 표현하고 싶었어요

Why am I practicing paradiddles?

왜 연타주법을 연습해야 하는거죠?

(Drum sounds)

Is it just literally for control, for hand-stick control?

스틱다루는 기법을 배우는건가요? 왜 그걸 배워야 하죠?

Why am I doing that?

I need to have the reason,

전 이유가 알고 싶었습니다

and the reason has to be by saying something through the music."

우리가 음악을 배우는 이유는 그것을 통해서 대화할 수 있기 때문이죠

And by saying something through music, which basically is sound,

음악, 기본적으로는 소리를 통해서 대화를 하고

we then can reach all sorts of things to all sorts of people.

여러 사람들에게 여러가지를 전달해 줄 수 있습니다

But I don't want to take responsibility of your emotional baggage.

그렇다고 여러분의 감정을 제가 어찌할 수는 없죠

That's up to you, when you walk through a hall,

그건 여러분 각자의 몫이에요.

because that then determines what and how we listen to certain things.

여러분 각자가 음악을 어떻게 들을까를 스스로 정하면 되는거에요

I may feel sorrowful, or happy, or exhilarated, or angry

전 음악을 연주하면서 슬픔, 행복, 즐거움, 분노를 느끼기도 하지만

when I play certain pieces of music,

그렇다고해서 여러분도 저와 똑같은

but I'm not necessarily wanting you to feel exactly the same thing.

감정을 느낄 필요는 없습니다

So please, the next time you go to a concert,

그러니까, 다음에 다른 콘서트에 갔을 때는

just allow your body to open up,

그저 여러분의 몸을 열어두고, 몸이 소리를 따라 울리도록 내버려두세요

allow your body to be this resonating chamber.

Be aware that you're not going to experience the same thing

연주자가 느끼는 것과는 다른 느낌을 받을 수 있다는 것도 알아두시구요

as the performer is.

The performer is in the worst possible position for the actual sound,

사실 연주자의 위치는 실제 소리를 듣기에는 좋은 위치가 아닙니다

because they're hearing the contact of the stick --

연주자들은 스틱과 드럼이 부딪히는 소리만 들릴 뿐이죠

(Drum sound)

on the drum, or the mallet on the bit of wood,

혹은 북채가 나무건반을 때리는 소리나, 활이 줄과 맞닿는 소리, 등등

or the bow on the string, etc.,

or the breath that's creating the sound from wind and brass.

아니면 관악기에 바람을 불어넣을 때의 숨소리만 듣게 되죠

They're experiencing that rawness there.

연주자들은 그런 다듬어지지 않은 소리만을 느낍니다

But yet they're experiencing something so unbelievably pure,

하지만 연주자들이 듣는 것은 놀랍도록 순수한 소리입니다.

which is before the sound is actually happening.

진짜 악기 소리가 만들어 지기 전의 순수한 소리죠.

Please take note of the life of the sound after the actual initial strike,

여러분들은 소리의 삶에 귀 기울여 보세요. 첫 타음을 한 이후,

숨을 불어 넣은 후, 아니면 활을 켠 직후에 만들어지는 소리의 여정을 느껴보는 거에요

or breath, is being pulled.

Just experience the whole journey of that sound

in the same way that I wished I'd experienced the whole journey

저도 똑같이 이 특별한 컨퍼런스에서 여러분들과 함께 여러 음악을 느끼고 싶었지만

of this particular conference, rather than just arriving last night.

어제 밤에 막 도착해서 그럴 수 없었네요.

But I hope maybe we can share one or two things as the day progresses.
