Now, when I was a young man -- 40 years ago,

음, 40년 전 제가 젊었을 때,

the country was very, very poor

with lots and lots and lots of people living in poverty.

We decided to do something about it,

but we didn't begin with a welfare program

or a poverty reduction program.

But we began with a family-planning program,

following a very successful

매우 성공적인 모자보건사업과

maternal child health activity,

sets of activities.

So basically, no one would accept family planning

자, 기본적으로 자기 자녀의 생존률이 극히 낮다면,

if their children didn't survive.

누가 가족계획을 받아들이겠는가요.

So the first step: get to the children, get to the mothers,

그래서 첫번째 단계는 바로 아이들과 아이 엄마들에게

and then follow up with family planning.

다가선 다음 가족계획을 진행하는 것이었죠.

Not just child mortality alone, you need also family planning.

유아 사망률만이 아니라, 가족계획이 함께 필요한 거죠.

Now let me take you back

이제 우리가 왜 그것을

as to why we needed to do it.

필요로 하는지 보여드리겠습니다.

In my country, that was the case in 1974.

이건 1974년 태국의 상황인데요.

Seven children per family --

가구당 일곱 명의 아이들이 있었습니다.

tremendous growth at 3.3 percent.

(인구증가는) 3.3%의 엄청난 증가율을 보였죠.

There was just no future.

미래가 없었습니다.

We needed to reduce the population growth rate.

인구증가율을 억제할 필요가 있었습니다.

So we said, "Let's do it."

그래서 우리는 "해 보자"라고 했죠.

The women said, "We agree. We'll use pills,

여성들은, "동의합니다. 피임약을 먹도록 할게요.

but we need a doctor to prescribe the pills,"

하지만 약을 처방해줄 의사가 필요해요." 라고 말했습니다.

and we had very, very few doctors.

하지만 우리는 의사가 매우 부족한 상황이죠.

We didn't take no as an answer;

그래도 우리는 부정적인 답을 취하지 않았습니다.

we took no as a question.

의구심을 품지도 않았고요.

We went to the nurses and the midwives, who were also women,

우리는 여성 간호사와 산파들에게 피임약을

and did a fantastic job

사용하는 방법을 설명해주는

at explaining how to use the pill.

멋진 일을 해냈죠.

That was wonderful,

꽤 괜찮았어요.

but it covered only 20 percent of the country.

하지만 전체 인구의 20%만이 혜택을 받을 수 있었습니다.

What do we do for the other 80 percent --

남은 80%는 어떻게 해야만 할까요.

leave them alone and say, "Well, they're not medical personnel."

내버려두고, "뭐, 그 사람들은 의료인이 아니니까" 라고 말할건가요?

No, we decided to do a bit more.

아니죠. 우리는 좀 더 해보기로 결심했습니다.

So we went to the ordinary people that you saw.

그래서 여러분이 봤던 평범한 사람들에게 다가갔죠.

Actually, below that yellow sign --

사실 저 노란색 표지판 아래는

I wish they hadn't wiped that,

그것을 지우지 않기를 바랬는데요,

because there was "Coca-Cola" there.

"코카콜라"가 거기 있었기 때문이죠.

We were so much bigger than Coca-Cola in those days.

그 당시에는 우리가 코카콜라 표지판보다 훨씬 더 컸습니다.

And no difference,

별 차이도 없었죠.

the people they chose were the people we chose.

그들이 선택한 사람들이 우리가 선택한 사람들이었죠.

They were well-known in the community,

그들은 지역사회에서 잘 알려져 있었고,

they knew that customers were always right,

고객은 언제나 옳다는 것을 알고 있었죠.

and they were terrific, and they practiced their family planning themselves.

그리고 그들은 대단했습니다. 스스로 가족계획을 실천하고 있었죠.

So they could supply pills and condoms

그래서 그들은 전국의 모든 마을에

throughout the country, in every village of the country.

피임약과 콘돔을 지급할 수 있었습니다.

So there we are. We went to the people

who were seen as the cause of the problem

to be the solution.

다가갔습니다.

Wherever there were people --

태국에는 사람들이 있는 곳 어디서나

and you can see boats with the women, selling things --

배를 타고 물건을 파는 여성들을 볼 수 있습니다.

here's the floating market

이것은 바나나, 게

selling bananas and crabs

그리고 피임약을 판매하고 있는

and also contraceptives --

떠 있는 시장입니다.

wherever you find people,

태국에서는 사람이 있는 곳이면

you'll find contraceptives in Thailand.

어디서나 피임약을 찾을 수 있죠.

And then we decided, why not get to religion

그런 다음 우리는 종교에 다가가기로 결심했습니다.

because in the Philippines,

필리핀에서는 카톨릭교의

the Catholic Church was pretty strong,

세가 강하지만, 태국 사람들은

and Thai people were Buddhist.

불교 신자들이기 때문입니다.

We went to them and they said, "Look, could you help us?"

우리가 사람들에게 다가가면, 그들은 "이봐요, 우릴 도와줄 수 있나요?" 라고 말합니다.

I'm there -- the one in blue, not the yellow --

for the monk to sprinkle holy water

on pills and condoms

for the sanctity of the family.

And this picture was sent throughout the country.

그리고 이 사진은 전국에 배포가 되었습니다.

So some of the monks in the villages were doing the same thing themselves.

그래서 마을에 있는 몇몇 스님들도 같은 일을 했죠.

And the women were saying, "No wonder we have no side-effects.

그리고 여성들은 "부작용이 없는 것이 당연해요.

It's been blessed."

축복받은 것들이잖아요." 라고 말했죠.

That was their perception.

그것이 그들의 인식이었죠.

And then we went to teachers.

그리고 나서 우리는 교사들에게 다가갔습니다.

You need everybody to be involved

누가 됐든지 간에 우리 사회를

in trying to provide whatever it is

좀 더 나은 곳으로 만들기 위해

that make humanity a better place.

애쓰는 사람이면 누구든 필요했죠.

So we went to the teachers.

그래서 우리는 교사에게로 갔죠.

Over a quarter of a million were taught about family planning

25만명 이상의 교사들이 새 알파벳과 연관된 가족계획에 대해서

with a new alphabet -- A, B for birth, C for condom,

교육을 받았습니다. 출산(Birth)의 B와, 콘돔(Condom)의 C,

I for IUD, V for vasectomy.

자궁내 피임기구(IUD)의 I, 정관 절제 수술(Vasectomy)의 V와 같은 것이죠.

And then we had a snakes and ladders game, where you throw dice.

그리고 주사위를 던지는 '뱀과 사다리 게임'도 도입했습니다.

If you land on anything pro-family planning, you move ahead.

"어머니가 매일 밤 피임약을 먹는다." 와 같은 어떤 친가족 계획의

Like, "Mother takes the pill every night.

영역에 도착하면, 앞으로 나아가는 것이죠.

Very good, mother. Move ahead.

아주 좋아요, 어머니, 앞으로 가세요.

Uncle buys a condom. Very good, uncle. Move ahead.

"삼촌이 콘돔을 샀어요." 하면, 아주 좋습니다, 삼촌, 앞으로 가세요.

Uncle gets drunk, doesn't use condom. Come back, start again."

"삼촌이 술에 취해 콘돔을 사지 않았어요." 그러면 돌아와서 다시 시작하세요. 이런 거죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Again, education, class entertainment.

다시 말하면, 교육과 수업 오락입니다.

And the kids were doing it in school too.

아이들도 학교에서 그렇게 했죠.

We had relay races with condoms,

콘돔으로 이어 달리기를 했고,

we had children's condom-blowing championship.

아이들이 참여하는 콘돔 불기 대회도 열었습니다.

And before long,

그리고 곧,

the condom was know as the girl's best friend.

콘돔은 여자 아이들의 가장 좋은 친구로 인식되었죠.

In Thailand, for poor people, diamonds don't make it --

태국의 빈곤층에게는 다이아몬드가 아무런 의미가 없습니다.

so the condom is the girl's best friend.

콘돔이 여성들의 가장 친한 친구인것이죠.

We introduced our first microcredit program in 1975,

1975년, 우리는 마이크로크레딧 프로그램을 도입했는데요.

and the women who organized it said,

그 프로그램을 설립한 여성들은 이렇게 말했죠.

"We only want to lend

"가족계획을 실천하는

to women who practice family planning.

여성에게만 대출할 계획입니다.

If you're pregnant, take care of your pregnancy.

혹시 지금 임신중이라면, 몸 관리를 잘하세요.

If you're not pregnant, you can take a loan out from us."

지금 임신중이 아니라면, 저희에게 대출받을 수 있습니다."

And that was run by them.

그 프로그램은 여성들에 의해 운영됩니다.

And after 35/36 years,

그리고 35~36년이 지난 오늘까지

it's still going on.

계속 운영되고 있습니다.

It's a part of the Village Development Bank;

그것은 마을 개발 은행의 한 부문인데요.

it's not a real bank, but it's a fund -- microcredit.

실제 은행은 아니지만, 펀드 같은 것이죠. 마이크로크레딧입니다.

And we didn't need a big organization to run it --

그리고 운영하는데 큰 조직이 필요하지 않습니다.

it was run by the villagers themselves.

마을 사람들 스스로가 운영을 하죠.

And you probably hardly see a Thai man there,

거기 가면 태국 남자는 아마 보기 힘들 것입니다.

it's always women, women, women, women.

언제나 여성, 여성, 여성들만 있죠.

And then we thought we'd help America,

그리고 나서, 우리가 미국을 도울 수 있지 않을까 생각했습니다.

because America's been helping everyone,

미국은 누가 원하든 원하지 않든 모든 사람들을

whether they want help or not.

도와주고 있잖아요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And this is on the Fourth of July.

그리고 이날은 7월 4일 (독립기념일) 이었죠.

We decided to provide vasectomy to all men,

우리는 모든 남성들에게 정관절제수술을 제공하기로 결정했습니다.

but in particular, American men to the front of the queue,

하지만 특히나, 대사관저까지 닿아 있는

right up to the Ambassador's residence

줄의 앞쪽에 서있는

during his vin d'honneur.

미국 남성들에게요.

And the hotel gave us the ballroom for it --

그리고 호텔측에서 연회장을 제공해주었습니다.

very appropriate room.

아주 적당한 방이죠. (주: Ballroom의 이름 때문)

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And since it was near lunch time,

점심시간이 되었을 때.

they said, "All right, we'll give you some lunch.

"좋습니다, 이제 식사를 드릴건데요

Of course, it must be American cola.

물론, 미국 콜라랑요.

You get two brands, Coke and Pepsi.

두 개의 브랜드가 있죠, 코카콜라나 펩시.

And then the food is either hamburger or hotdog."

음식은 햄버거나 핫도그 중 고르세요." 라고 했죠.

And I thought a hotdog will be more symbolic.

그리고 제 생각에 핫도그가 보다 상징적인 것 같네요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And here is this, then, young man called Willy Bohm

그리고 여기 USAID(미국 국제 개발처)에서 일하는

who worked for the USAID.

윌리 봄이라는 청년이 있었는데요.

Obviously, he's had his vasectomy

윌리는 핫도그를 절반 정도 먹었기 때문에,

because his hotdog is half eaten, and he was very happy.

분명히 정관절제를 한 거죠. 아주 만족스러워 하더군요.

It made a lot of news in America, and it angered some people also.

미국에서는 이게 많은 뉴스를 만들어냈고 여러 사람을 분노하게도 만들었죠.

I said, "Don't worry. Come over and I'll do the whole lot of you."

제가 그랬죠. "걱정하지 말고, 오시면 여러분 모두에게 해드릴게요." 라고.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And what happened?

그리고 무슨 일이 일어났을까요?

In all this thing,

이 모든 걸 하면서,

from seven children to 1.5 children,

7명의 자녀가 1.5명으로 줄었고,

population growth rate of 3.3 to 0.5.

인구성장률은 3.3%에서 0.5%로 떨어졌죠.

You could call it the Coca-Cola approach if you like --

여러분이 괜찮다면 코카콜라 접근 방식으로 부를 수 있겠네요.

it was exactly the same thing.

정확히 일치하거든요.

I'm not sure whether Coca-Cola followed us, or we followed Coca-Cola,

코카콜라가 우리를 따라한건지 아니면 그 반대인지 잘 모르겠습니다만,

but we're good friends.

어쨌든 우린 좋은 친구죠.

And so that's the case of everyone joining in.

그리고 그것은 모두가 동참했던 일이고요.

We didn't have a strong government. We didn't have lots of doctors.

강력한 정부도 없었고 의사의 수도 많지 않았지만,

But it's everybody's job

사람들의 태도와 행동을 바꿀 수 있다는

who can change attitude and behavior.

모두의 책임으로 가능한 일이었죠.

Then AIDS came along and hit Thailand,

그리고 나서 에이즈가 발생하고 태국을 강타했었고요.

and we had to stop doing a lot of good things

우리는 에이즈와 싸우기 위하여 많은 것들을

to fight AIDS.

포기해야만 했죠.

But unfortunately, the government was in denial, denial, denial.

하지만 안타깝게도, 정부는 (지원을) 거절하고, 계속 거절했죠.

So our work wasn't affected.

그래도 우리 일은 그다지 영향받지 않았습니다.

So I thought, "Well, if you can't go to the government, go to the military."

저는 생각했죠. "좋아, 정부로 갈 수 없다면, 군대로 가보자."라고요.

So I went to the military

그래서 저는 군대로 가서 300개의

and asked to borrow 300 radio stations.

무선국을 대여해달라고 요청했습니다.

They have more than the government,

군대는 정부 보다 더 많은 것을 가지고 있고,

and they've got more guns than the government.

정부가 가진 것보다 더 많은 무기를 가지고 있죠.

So I asked them, could they help us

그래서 에이즈와 싸우는데

in our fight against HIV.

우리를 도와달라고 군대에 요청했죠.

And after I gave them statistics,

제가 제시한 통계를 군대에서 본 다음

they said, "Yes. Okay. You can use all the radio stations, television stations."

그들은 "좋습니다. 모든 라디오, TV 방송국을 사용하세요." 라고 했죠.

And that's when we went onto the airwaves.

그것이 우리가 전파를 탄 때입니다.

And then we got a new prime minister soon after that.

그 직후 새로운 수상이 선출되었고요.

And he said, "Mechai, could you come and join?"

수상은 저한테 "메차이, 같이 일해보지 않겠소?" 라고 제안했죠.

He asked me in because he liked my wife a lot.

그가 제 아내를 많이 좋아했었기 때문에 저한테 같이 일해보자 한 거죠.

So I said, "Okay."

그래서 "좋습니다" 라고 수락했습니다.

He became the chairman of the National AIDS Committee

그리고 나서 그는 국제 에이즈 위원회의 의장이 되었고요.

and increased the budget fifty-fold.

그리고 예산을 50배 늘리더군요.

Every ministry, even judges, had to be involved in AIDS education --

모든 각료와 판사들은 에이즈 교육에 참여해야만 했죠.

everyone -- and we said the public, institutions,

모두가요. 그리고 우리는 공공단체,

religious institutions, schools --

종교단체, 학교 등 모두가

everyone was involved.

참여해야 한다고 말했습니다.

And here, every media person

그리고 여기 모든 대중매체에 종사하는 사람들은

had to be trained for HIV.

HIV 훈련을 이수해야만 합니다.

And we gave every station half a minute extra

그리고 우리는 그 사람들이 더 많은 돈을 벌도록

for advertising to earn more money.

모든 방송국에 광고를 위한 여분의 30초를 할애해줬고

So they were happy with that.

그들은 만족해 하더군요.

And then AIDS education in all schools,

그리고 나서 대학에서 시작한 에이즈 교육을

starting from university.

모든 학교로 확대했습니다.

And these are high school kids teaching high school kids.

그리고 이 아이들은 고등학생들을 가르치는 고등학생들입니다.

And the best teachers were the girls, not the boys,

최고의 교사는 남학생들이 아니라 여학생들이죠.

and they were terrific.

여자 아이들은 정말 훌륭했습니다.

And these girls who go around teaching about safe sex and HIV

안전한 섹스와 에이즈에 대해서 알려주고 다니는 이 아이들은

were known as Mother Theresa.

테레사 수녀로 알려져 있죠.

And then we went down one more step.

그리고 나서 우리는 한 단계 가까이 갔죠.

These are primary school kids -- third, fourth grade --

이 아이들은 에이즈 정보와 콘돔을 가지고

going to every household in the village,

태국의 모든 마을의 가정을

every household in the whole of Thailand,

가가호호 방문하는

giving AIDS information and a condom

초등학교 3, 4학년 학생들입니다.

to every household,

이 아이들이 모든 가정에

given by these young kids.

에이즈 정보와 콘돔을 제공합니다.

And no parents objected, because we were trying to save lives,

어떤 부모의 반대도 없었죠. 왜냐면 우리는 생명을 구하기 위해 노력한 거니까요.

and this was a lifesaver.

그 일은 생명을 구하는 일이었습니다.

And we said, "Everyone needs to be involved."

우린 이렇게 말했죠. "모두가 참여해야 합니다." 라고요.

So you have the companies also realizing

기업들이 아픈 직원은 일을 할 수 없다는 것과,

that sick staff don't work, and dead customers don't buy.

죽은 소비자는 물건을 사줄 수 없다는 걸 깨닫게 해야 합니다.

So they all trained.

그래서 그들은 모두 훈련을 받았습니다.

And then we have this Captain Condom,

그리고 우리는 하바드 MBA를 딴

with his Harvard MBA,

캡틴 콘돔에게

going to schools and night spots.

학교와 나이트 클럽에 가게 했죠.

And they loved him. You need a symbol of something.

사람들은 캡틴 콘돔을 아주 좋아했죠. 어떤 상징이 필요한 겁니다.

In every country, every program, you need a symbol,

모든 국가와 모든 프로그램에는 어떤 상징이 필요한 거죠.

and this is probably the best thing he's ever done with his MBA.

그가 MBA 학위를 갖고 한 일 가운데 아마도 최고일 것입니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And then we gave condoms out everywhere on the streets --

그리고 나서 어디가 됐든 우리는 길에서 사람들에게 콘돔을 나눠줬고요.

everywhere, everywhere.

어디에서나요.

In taxis, you get condoms.

택시에서도 콘돔을 받을 수 있었죠.

And also, in traffic,

그리고 길이 막힐 때도

the policemen give you condoms -- our "cops and rubbers" programs.

경찰관이 사람들에게 콘돔을 줬죠. 우리의 "경찰과 고무" 프로그램입니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So, can you imagine New York policemen giving out condoms?

뉴욕 경찰이 콘돔을 나눠주는 것을 상상하실 수 있겠나요?

Of course I can. And they'd enjoy it immensely;

물론 저는 상상이 가능합니다. 아마 엄청 좋아할 겁니다.

I see them standing around right now, everywhere.

경찰관은 어디에든 있잖아요.

Imagine if they had condoms,

그들이 콘돔을 가지고 있다고 생각해보세요.

giving out to all sorts of people.

모든 사람들에게 나눠주면서 말이죠.

And then, new change,

그리고 나서, 좀 새롭게 변화를 줘봤는데요,

we had hair bands, clothing

우리는 머리띠와, 옷,

and the condom for your mobile phone

그리고 장마철 기간중에 핸드폰 사용을 위한

during the rainy season.

콘돔을 만들었습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And these were the condoms that we introduced.

이건 우리가 내 놓은 콘돔들입니다.

One says, "Weapon of mass protection."

하나는 "대량 보호를 위한 무기"라고 적혀 있죠.

We found --

우리는 찾아낸 거죠.

you know -- somebody here was searching for the weapon of mass destruction,

알다시피, 누군가는 대량 살상 무기를 찾고 있었습니다.

but we have found the weapon of mass protection: the condom.

하지만 우리는 대랑 보호 무기인 콘돔을 찾아낸 거죠.

And then it says here, with the American flag,

그리고 여기 미국 국기가 그려진 것에는

"Don't leave home without it."

"거시기(콘돔) 없이 집을 나서지 마세요."라고 적혀있네요.

But I have some to give out afterward.

나눠주고 난 다음에 대해서 말씀 드릴 게 있는데요.

But let me warn you, these are Thai-sized,

미리 알려드리는데요, 이건 태국 사람의 크기 입니다.

so be very careful.

그러니 주의하도록 하세요.

(Laughter)

And so you can see

그리고 여러분은 콘돔으로 많은 것을

that condoms can do so many things.

할 수 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있습니다.

Look at this --

이걸 보시죠.

I gave this to Al Gore and to Bill Senior also.

저는 이것을 앨 고어와 빌 시니어에게 줬습니다.

Stop global warming; use condoms.

"지구 온난화를 막읍시다: 콘돔을 사용하세요."

And then this is the picture I mentioned to you --

이것이 제가 언급했던 그림인데요.

the weapon of mass protection.

"대량 보호를 위한 무기"입니다.

And let the next Olympics save some lives.

다음 올림픽이 생명을 살릴 수 있게 하는 거죠.

Why just run around?

왜 그냥 달리시나요? (주: "왜 그냥 하시나요?" 의 남녀관계의 중의적 의미)

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And then finally,

그리고 마지막으로,

in Thailand we're Buddhist, we don't have a God,

태국은 불교 국가라서 신이 없죠.

so instead, we say, "In rubber we trust."

대신에, 우린 "우리는 고무를 믿습니다." (주:우리는 하느님을 믿는다" 의미의 미국 화폐에 새겨진 "In God we trust" 표어 패러디)

(Laughter)

So you can see that we added everything to our endeavor

사람들이 더 나은 삶을 살 수 있도록

to make life better for the people.

우리가 기울인 노력을 보실 수 있는데요.

We had condoms in all the refrigerators in the hotels and the schools,

우리는 호텔과 학교의 모든 냉장고 안에 콘돔을 넣어 놓았고요.

because alcohol impairs judgment.

술이 판단력을 흐릴 수 있으니까요.

And then what happened?

그러면 무슨 일이 일어났을까요?

After all this time, everybody joined in.

시간이 많이 흘러, 모든 사람들이 동참했습니다.

According to the U.N.,

유엔에 따르면,

new cases of HIV

에이즈의 새로운 발병이

declined by 90 percent,

90%까지 감소했고,

and according to the World Bank,

세계은행에 따르면

7.7 million lives were saved.

770만의 생명을 살렸습니다.

Otherwise there wouldn't be many Thais walking around today.

그렇지 않았다면 오늘날 태국에 이렇게 많은 사람들이 돌아다니 못했을 거에요.

So it just showed you, you could do something about it.

그리고 이건 여러분이 뭔가를 할 수 있다는 것을 보여주는 거죠.

90 percent of the funding came from Thailand.

자금의 90%는 태국에서 나오고요.

There was political commitment, some financial commitment,

정치적 노력과 재정적 노력이 있었기에

and everybody joined in the fight.

그리고 모든 사람들이 이 싸움에 동참했기에 가능했죠.

So just don't leave it to the specialists and doctors and nurses.

전문가와 의사, 간호사에게 그 문제를 떠넘기지 않았죠.

We all need to help.

우리 모두 도와야 했습니다.

And then we decided to help people out of poverty,

그리고 나서 우리는 사람들이 가난에서 벗어날 수 있도록 돕기로 했죠.

now that we got AIDS somewhat out of the way --

에이즈는 어느 정도 처리가 되었으니까요.

this time, not with government alone,

이번에는 정부 독자적으로 하는 것이 아니라,

but in cooperation with the business community.

기업 공동체와 협조했습니다.

Because poor people are business people

가난한 사람들은 사업 기술이 부족하고

who lack business skills and access to credit.

Those are the things to be provided by the business community.

그런 것들은 기업 공동체가 제공할 수 있는 것이죠.

We're trying to turn them into barefoot entrepreneurs,

우리는 그들을 맨발의 기업가들, 작은 기업가들로

little business people.

바꾸려고 노력하고 있습니다.

The only way out of poverty is through business enterprise.

So, that was done.

The money goes from the company into the village

And before you can borrow the money, you need to be trained.

And we believe if you want to help the poor,

those who are living in poverty,

so that, when they borrow money, they'll succeed with the business.

And then we have silk, Thai silk.

Now we're making Scottish tartans, as you can see on the left,

to sell to all people of Scottish ancestors.

that you can also get condoms?

콘돔을 구할 수 있다고 상상할 수 있으세요?

You can order your condoms with your with your cappuccino.

And then now, finally in education,

그리고 이제, 마지막으로, 교육 분야인데요.

we want to change the school as being underutilized

충분히 활용되지 않았던 학교라는 공간을 모두를 위한

into a place where it's a lifelong learning center for everyone.

평생학습 센터로 변화시키고자 합니다.

We call this our School-Based Integrated Rural Development.

우리는 이것을 '학교를 기반에 둔 통합 농촌 개발' 이라고 부르죠.

And it's a center, a focal point

그리고 그것이 경제, 사회 개발을 위한

for economic and social development.

관심과 활동의 중심이 되는 겁니다.

Re-do the school,

make it serve the community needs.

And here is a bamboo building --

all of them are bamboo.
