I decided when I was asked to do this

that what I really wanted to talk about was my friend, Richard Feynman.

I was one of the fortunate few that really did get to know him

and enjoyed his presence.

And I'm going to tell you about the Richard Feynman that I knew.

I'm sure there are people here who could tell you

여기 계신 분들 중에서도

리처드 파인만에 대해 아는 분들이 틀림없이 계시겠지만,

about the Richard Feynman they knew,

and it would probably be a different Richard Feynman.

어쩌면 제가 아는 리처드 파인만과는 다를지도 모릅니다.

리처드 파인만은 굉장히 복잡한 사람이었습니다.

Richard Feynman was a very complex man.

He was a man of many, many parts.

아주 많은 단면을 가진 사람이었죠.

He was, of course, foremost, a very, very, very great scientist.

물론, 무엇보다도 그는

매우, 매우, 매우 뛰어난 과학자였죠.

그는 배우였습니다. 그가 연기하는 걸 보셨죠.

He was an actor. You saw him act.

I also had the good fortune to be in those lectures,

저는 그의 강의에 참석하는 행운도 누렸습니다.

up in the balcony.

2층 발코니석에서 말이죠.

They were fantastic.

정말 환상적이었어요.

그는 철학자였습니다.

He was a philosopher.

He was a drum player.

드럼연주자이기도 했고,

He was a teacher par excellence.

훌륭한 선생님이었습니다.

Richard Feynman was also a showman,

리처드 파인만은 쇼맨의 기질도 있었습니다.

쇼맨쉽이 대단했죠.

an enormous showman.

그는 건방지고, 불친절했습니다 --

He was brash, irreverent.

He was full of macho, a kind of macho one-upmanship.

그는 굉장히 남자다웠습니다.

일종의 남성 우월의식 같은 게 있었죠.

He loved intellectual battle.

그는 두뇌싸움을 좋아했습니다.

He had a gargantuan ego.

자존심이 대단한 사람이었죠.

But the man had, somehow,

하지만 남자들은 뭔가

a lot of room at the bottom.

자존심을 많이 내세우는 편이죠.

자존심을 많이 내세운다고

And what I mean by that is a lot of room, in my case --

말한 의미는-- 저의 경우에는 --

다른 사람들은 어떨지 모르지만 --

I can't speak for anybody else, but in my case --

저의 경우에도

a lot of room for another big ego.

자존심이 센 편이거든요.

Well, not as big as his,

그 친구 만큼은 아니었지만

but fairly big.

꽤 셉니다.

전 파인만과 있으면 늘 기분이 좋았습니다.

I always felt good with Dick Feynman.

It was always fun to be with him.

그와 함께 있으면 늘 즐거웠어요.

He always made me feel smart.

그는 늘 제가 똑똑한 듯이 느끼게 만들었습니다.

자기가 영리한 것 같은 느낌이 들게 만드는 사람이 어딨겠어요?

How can somebody like that make you feel smart?

왠지 그는 그런 느낌이 들게 했습니다.

Somehow he did.

He made me feel smart. He made me feel he was smart.

내가 영리한 듯 느끼게 만들었고, 그가 영리하다고 느끼게 만들었습니다.

He made me feel we were both smart,

우리 둘다 똑똑하다고 느끼게 만들었죠.

and the two of us could solve any problem whatever.

그래서 우리 둘이서 어떤 문제라도 풀어 낼 수 있었습니다.

사실, 우리는 함께 물리학을 공부하기도 했습니다.

And in fact, we did sometimes do physics together.

함께 논문을 낸 적은 전혀 없지만,

We never published a paper together,

재밌는 일이 많았죠.

but we did have a lot of fun.

그는 이기는 걸 좋아했습니다.

He loved to win,

win these little macho games we would sometimes play.

가끔씩 간단한 마초게임을 하기도 했죠.

And he didn't only play them with me, but with all sorts of people.

저 뿐만 아니고, 다른 여러 사람들과도 게임을 하곤 했습니다.

He would almost always win.

대개는 그가 이겼죠.

But when he didn't win, when he lost,

하지만 이기지 못했을 때, 자기가 졌을 때도,

he would laugh and seem to have just as much fun

as if he had won.

즐거워 했습니다.

I remember once he told me a story

그가 저에게 해 준 얘기가 기억나네요.

about a joke the students played on him.

학생들이 자기를 골탕먹인 일에 대한 얘기인데요.

I think it was for his birthday --

학생들이 그를 -- 그 친구 생일이었을거에요.

they took him for lunch

학생들이 그와 점심먹으러 갔는데요.

to a sandwich place in Pasadena.

패사디나에 있는 샌드위치가게로

그를 데리고 갔습니다.

It may still exist; I don't know.

그 가게 아직 있을지도 모르겠네요.

Celebrity sandwiches was their thing.

그 가게는 유명인 샌드위치를 팔았습니다.

You could get a Marilyn Monroe sandwich.

거기 가면 마릴린먼로 샌드위치도 먹을 수 있어요.

You could get a Humphrey Bogart sandwich.

험프리 보가트 샌드위치도 있죠.

The students went there in advance,

학생들은 미리 그 가게에 가서는

and arranged that they'd all order Feynman sandwiches.

다들 파인만 샌드위치를 주문하기로 미리 입을 맞춰두었죠.

차례로 가게에 들어와서 파인만 샌드위치를 주문하는 거였죠.

One after another, they came in and ordered Feynman sandwiches.

파인만은 이 일화를 좋아했습니다.

Feynman loved this story.

He told me this story, and he was really happy and laughing.

제게 이 얘기를 해주면서 정말 행복해하면서 웃었죠.

When he finished the story, I said to him,

그의 얘기를 다 듣고, 저는 이런 말을 했습니다.

"Dick, I wonder what would be the difference

"딕. 파인만 샌드위치와

서스킨드 샌드위치는 어떻게 다를지 궁금해"

between a Feynman sandwich and a Susskind sandwich."

And without skipping a beat at all,

그는 아주 단호하게 이렇게 말했죠

he said, "Well, they'd be about the same.

"음, 어쩌면 비슷할지도 몰라.

다른 점이라고는 서스킨드 샌드위치는 햄이 더 많이 들어있겠지."

The only difference is a Susskind sandwich would have a lot more ham."

햄은 삼류배우라는 의미에요.

"Ham" as in bad actor.

(웃음)

(Laughter)

Well, I happened to have been very quick that day,

그 날 만큼은 저도 재빨리 받아쳐서 이렇게 말했죠.

"그래. 하지만 발로니는 훨씬 적을거야" (주:발로니 baloney: 볼로냐 소세지. 속어로 '헛소리'라는 뜻. 삼류배우에 응수의 의미로 비꼬는 말)

and I said, "Yeah, but a lot less baloney."

(Laughter)

그런데 사실은,

The truth of the matter

is that a Feynman sandwich had a load of ham,

파인만 샌드위치는

햄이 엄청 많았습니다.

but absolutely no baloney.

발로니는 전혀 들어있지 않았죠.

What Feynman hated worse than anything else

파인만이 그 무엇보다도 가장 싫어했던건

지적 가식이었습니다 --

was intellectual pretense --

허위,

phoniness,

false sophistication, jargon.

거짓된 교양, 전문용어 같은 것들이었죠.

80년대의 어느날이 기억나네요.

I remember sometime during the mid-'80s,

80년대 중반이었죠.

Dick and I and Sidney Coleman would meet a couple of times

딕과 저, 그리고 시드니 콜먼,

그렇게 셋이 두어번 만난 적이 있었습니다.

up in San Francisco -- at some very rich guy's house --

샌프란시스코 북부의 어느 부자집에서 있었던

up in San Francisco for dinner.

만찬모임에서 만났었죠.

그리고 그 부자집에 초대받은 마지막 날에

And the last time the rich guy invited us,

he also invited a couple of philosophers.

두어명의 철학자들도 초대받아 왔었죠.

These guys were philosophers of mind.

그 사람들은 심리철학자였습니다.

Their specialty was the philosophy of consciousness.

의식철학 분야의 전문가들이었죠.

And they were full of all kinds of jargon.

그들은 갖가지 전문용어를 많이 사용했습니다.

지금 생각나는 단어들은 --

I'm trying to remember the words --

"monism," "dualism," categories all over the place.

"일원론", "이중성", 여러가지 용어들이었죠.

저는 그것들이 무슨 의미인지 몰랐습니다. 딕도 몰랐고

I didn't know what those meant, neither did Dick or Sydney, for that matter.

시드니도 몰랐습니다.

그럼 우리가 무슨 얘기를 나눴겠어요?

And what did we talk about?

Well, what do you talk about when you talk about minds?

심리에 대해서 대화를 나눈다면 여러분은 무슨 얘기를 했을까요?

There's one obvious thing to talk about:

단 한가지, 이것만큼은 틀림없이 얘기할 겁니다 --

Can a machine become a mind?

기계도 마음을 가질수 있을까요?

Can you build a machine

사람처럼 생각하고

that thinks like a human being that is conscious?

사람같이 생각하는 기계를

만들 수 있을까요?

We sat around and talked about this -- we of course never resolved it.

우리는 둘러앉아서 이런 주제로 얘기를 나눴습니다. 물론 해답은 못 찾았죠.

But the trouble with the philosophers

하지만 그 철학자들의 문제점은

is that they were philosophizing

과학적으로 생각해야 하는 것조차도

when they should have been science-ophizing.

심각하게 철학적이었다는 것이었습니다.

그것은 순전히 과학의 문제였는데도 말이죠.

It's a scientific question, after all.

And this was a very, very dangerous thing to do

딕 파인만 앞에서 그런 행동을 하는 건

정말 정말 위험한 것이었습니다.

around Dick Feynman.

(Laughter)

Feynman let them have it -- both barrels, right between the eyes.

파인만은 따끔하게 일침을 가했고, 그들을 한 방 먹였습니다.

It was brutal; it was funny -- ooh, it was funny.

좀 심했지만, 재밌었죠. 정말 유쾌했어요.

But it was really brutal.

그런데 정말로 좀 심했었죠.

He really popped their balloon.

그들의 흥겨운 기분을 완전히 망쳐놓았습니다.

그런데 놀라운 건 말이죠 --

But the amazing thing was -- Feynman had to leave a little early;

파인만은 먼저 자리를 떠났는데요.

he wasn't feeling too well, so he left a little bit early.

기분이 좋지 않아서 먼저 자리를 떠났고,

And Sidney and I were left there with the two philosophers.

시드니와 저는 그 두명의 철학자들과 남겨져 있었습니다.

And the amazing thing is these guys were flying.

놀랍게도 그 둘은 완전히 들떠 있었습니다.

They were so happy.

무척 행복해하고 있었어요.

위대한 인물을 만나서

They had met the great man;

they had been instructed by the great man;

그 위대한 인물로부터 가르침을 받았고,

they had an enormous amount of fun

그런 인물에게서 망신을 당했다며

having their faces shoved in the mud ...

무척이나 즐거워하고 있었습니다.

뭔가 특별한 경험이었죠.

And it was something special.

I realized there was something just extraordinary about Feynman,

저는 그 때 파인만에게는 뭔가 남다른 면이 있다는 걸 깨달았습니다.

그런 행동을 했을 때 조차도 말이죠.

even when he did what he did.

Dick -- he was my friend; I did call him Dick --

딕은 제 친구였습니다. 전 그를 딕이라고 불렀죠.

Dick and I had a little bit of a rapport.

딕과 저는 약간은 친밀한 관계였습니다.

그와 저 사이에는 특별한 관계를 유지하고 있었죠.

I think it may have been a special rapport that he and I had.

We liked each other; we liked the same kind of things.

우리는 서로를 좋아했고, 취향도 같았습니다.

I also like the intellectual macho games.

저도 마초게임으로 두뇌싸움 하는 걸 즐겼죠.

Sometimes I would win, mostly he would win,

but we both enjoyed them.

And Dick became convinced at some point

딕은 우리가 성격면에서도

that he and I had some kind of similarity of personality.

어느 정도 유사한 면이 있다고 믿고 있었죠.

저는 그렇게 생각하지 않았습니다.

I don't think he was right.

I think the only point of similarity between us

제 생각에 비슷한 면이라고는 단지

자기 자랑하는 걸 좋아한다는 것 밖에 없었습니다.

is we both like to talk about ourselves.

But he was convinced of this.

그래도 그는 그렇게 믿었습니다.

그는 호기심이 많았습니다.

And the man was incredibly curious.

믿기 어려울 만큼 호기심이 많았어요.

And he wanted to understand what it was and why it was

그는 이게 무엇인지. 왜 그런지 알고 싶어했습니다.

왜 이런 흥미로운 관계를 갖는지를 말이죠.

that there was this funny connection.

And one day, we were walking.

어느 날 우리가 산책할 때 였습니다.

We were in France, in Les Houches.

프랑스의 라 주쉬 였죠.

We were up in the mountains, 1976.

1976년 이었고, 산을 오르고 있었습니다.

산을 오르던 중에, 파인만이 제게 말했습니다.

And Feynman said to me, "Leonardo ..."

"레오나르도."

저를 '레오나르도'라고 부른 이유는

The reason he called me "Leonardo" is because we were in Europe,

그 때 우리가 유럽에 있었고

and he was practicing his French.

그가 불어를 연습하고 있었거든요.

(Laughter)

그가 말했죠. "레오나르도.

And he said, "Leonardo,

자네는 어렸을 때 어머니와 가깝게 지냈나,

were you closer to your mother or your father when you were a kid?"

아니면 아버지와 가깝게 지냈나?"

I said, "Well, my real hero was my father.

제가 말했죠. "글쎄, 아버지가 진정한 영웅이었지.

근면한 분이셨고,

He was a working man,

초등학교 5학년까지 배우셨다네.

had a fifth-grade education.

He was a master mechanic, and he taught me how to use tools.

기계숙련공이어서 내게 공구들을 다루는 법을 가르쳐주셨어.

He taught me all sorts of things about mechanical things.

기계와 관련된 모든 것을 아버지로부터 배웠지.

He even taught me the Pythagorean theorem.

피타고라스 정리도 아버지가 가르쳐 주셨어.

He didn't call it the hypotenuse,

아버지는 '빗변' 이라는 용어를 몰라서

he called it the shortcut distance."

'지름길'이라고 표현하셨지."

And Feynman's eyes just opened up.

그때 파인만이 눈을 크게 뜨고

He went off like a lightbulb.

환한 표정을 지었습니다.

그도 자신의 아버지와

And he said that he had had

basically exactly the same relationship with his father.

완전히 똑같은 사이였다고 하더군요.

완전히 똑같은 사이였다고 하더군요.

In fact, he had been convinced at one time

사실, 그는 훌륭한 물리학자가 되리라는 걸

that to be a good physicist,

단번에 확신했었습니다.

거기에는 아버지와의 관계가

it was very important to have had that kind of relationship

매우 중요한 역할을 했었죠.

with your father.

I apologize for the sexist conversation here,

성차별적인 대화내용이라 죄송합니다만

but this is the way it really happened.

실제로 이런 대화를 나눴습니다.

He said he had been absolutely convinced that this was necessary,

그 친구가 말하길, 자기는 신예 물리학자로 성장해야 겠다는 걸

a necessary part of the growing up of a young physicist.

그때부터 굳게 믿기 시작했다고 하더군요.

Being Dick, he, of course, wanted to check this.

딕 입장에서는 물론 그걸 확인하고 싶었습니다.

드러내놓고 실험해 보고 싶어했죠.

He wanted to go out and do an experiment.

그래서 그는 그렇게 했습니다.

(Laughter)

Well, he did.

그는 한가지 실험을 했는데요.

He went out and did an experiment.

그는 뛰어난 물리학자라고 생각되는 친구들에게 이런 질문을 했습니다.

He asked all his friends that he thought were good physicists,

"자네는 엄마와 아빠 중에서 누구의 영향을 받았나?"

"Was it your mom or your pop that influenced you?"

They were all men,

남자들은 -- 그들 모두 남자였어요 --

and to a man, every single one of them said,

남자들은 모두 하나 같이 이런 대답을 했습니다.

"우리 엄마지."

"My mother."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

There went that theory, down the trash can of history.

결국 그의 이론은 없었던 일이 되어버렸죠.

(Laughter)

But he was very excited that he had finally met somebody

그런데 아버지와의 관계에서 자신과 같은 경험을 했다는

who had the same experience with his father

어떤 사람을 결국 찾아내고는

몹시 반가워 했습니다.

as he had with his father.

And for some time, he was convinced this was the reason we got along so well.

그리고 한 동안 그는 확신하고 있었죠.

우리 사이가 가까웠던 것도 다 그 때문이라고요.

I don't know. Maybe. Who knows?

전 모르겠어요. 그럴 수도 있고. 아무도 모르죠.

But let me tell you a little bit about Feynman the physicist.

그럼, 물리학자로서 파인만에 대해

조금만 얘기해 볼까 합니다.

Feynman's style -- no, "style" is not the right word.

파인만의 스타일은 --

아니요. '스타일'은 적당한 단어가 아니겠네요.

"Style" makes you think of the bow tie he might have worn,

'스타일' 이라고 하면 그가 하고 있던 나비넥타이나

입고 있던 양복을 떠올릴 수도 있겠어요.

or the suit he was wearing.

그 보다는 훨씬 더 심오한 의미입니다만..

It's something much deeper than that,

but I can't think of another word for it.

다른 단어가 떠오르질 않네요.

파인만의 과학적인 스타일은

Feynman's scientific style was always to look for the simplest,

어떤 문제에 대해서 가장 단순하고

가장 기본적인 해법을 찾아내고자 했다는 것입니다.

most elementary solution to a problem that was possible.

If it wasn't possible, you had to use something fancier.

그렇게 할 수 없다면, 복잡한 이론을 쓸 수 밖에 없겠죠.

하지만 의심의 여지 없이,

No doubt, part of this was his great joy and pleasure

사람들에게 훨씬 단순하게 생각하는

in showing people that he could think more simply than they could.

방법을 제시할 때, 그는 무척 즐거워 했습니다.

But he also deeply believed, he truly believed,

그는 단순하게 설명할 수 없다면

that if you couldn't explain something simply,

그걸 이해하지 못한 거라고 굳게 믿고 있었습니다.

you didn't understand it.

In the 1950s, people were trying to figure out

how superfluid helium worked.

There was a theory.

It was due to a Russian mathematical physicist.

러시아의 수학물리학자가 세운 가설이었는데요.

복잡한 가설이었습니다.

It was a complicated theory;

I'll tell you what it was soon enough.

그 가설에 대해서 잠깐 말씀드리자면.

It was a terribly complicated theory,

정말 엄청나게 복잡한 가설이었습니다.

full of very difficult integrals and formulas

굉장히 어려운 적분식과 공식, 수학기호들로

and mathematics and so forth.

가득 채워져 있는 가설이었죠.

And it sort of worked, but it didn't work very well.

적절하기는 했어도, 잘 들어맞는 가설은 아니었습니다.

헬륨원자들이 서로 아주아주 멀리

The only way it worked

is when the helium atoms were very, very far apart.

떨어져 있을 때만 그 가설로 설명할 수 있었죠.

And unfortunately,

헬륨원자들이 굉장히 멀리 떨어져 있어야 하는데

불행하게도 액체헬륨 상태의 헬륨 원자들은

the helium atoms in liquid helium are right on top of each other.

서로 붙어있는 상태입니다.

Feynman decided, as a sort of amateur helium physicist,

that he would try to figure it out.

He had an idea, a very clear idea.

한 가지 아이디어가 있었거든요. 아주 명쾌했어요.

He would try to figure out

what the quantum wave function of this huge number of atoms looked like.

그 엄청난 수의 원자들이 이루는

양자파동을 표현할 수 있는 함수식이었습니다.

He would try to visualize it,

guided by a small number of simple principles.

그 파동을 설명하려고 했었죠.

The small number of simple principles were very, very simple.

The first one was that when helium atoms touch each other,

제일 첫번째는

헬륨 원자는 서로 맞닿으면 밀어내려 한다는 것입니다.

they repel.

The implication of that is that the wave function has to go to zero,

it has to vanish when the helium atoms touch each other.

또 다른 사실은,

The other fact is that in the ground state --

the lowest energy state of a quantum system --

늘 파동함수가 매우 완만한 형태가 되어서

the wave function is always very smooth;

it has the minimum number of wiggles.

So he sat down --

and I imagine he had nothing more

제가 기억하기로는 그가 가진거라고는

than a simple piece of paper and a pencil --

종이 한 장과 연필 한자루 외에는 아무것도 없습니다.

and he tried to write down, and did write down,

그는 종이에 쓰고, 또 썼습니다.

그가 생각할 수 있는 가장 간단한 함수식으로

the simplest function that he could think of,

which had the boundary conditions

원자들이 맞닿을 때 파동함수가 소멸되고

that the wave function vanish when things touch

완만한 형태를 이루는 경계조건을

and is smooth in between.

표현해냈죠.

He wrote down a simple thing -- so simple, in fact,

정말로 굉장히 단순했어요.

that I suspect a really smart high-school student

제 생각에 미적분학을 배우지 않았더라도

꽤 똑똑한 고등학생이라면

who didn't even have calculus

could understand what he wrote down.

그가 쓴 내용을 이해할 수 있었을 겁니다.

The thing was, that simple thing that he wrote down

그가 쓴 내용이 그렇게도 간단했음에도

explained everything that was known at the time about liquid helium,

그 당시에 액체 헬륨에 대해 알고 있던 것들, 그리고 그 이상의

모든 것을 설명할 수 있었습니다.

and then some.

I've always wondered whether the professionals --

전 늘 궁금했습니다.

그 전문가들, 헬륨물리학에 관한 전문가들이

the real professional helium physicists --

were just a little bit embarrassed by this.

이것에 대해서 조금이라도 당황했을지 말이죠.

They had their super-powerful technique,

그들은 최고의 기술을 가졌음에도

그걸 제대로 활용하지 못했습니다.

and they couldn't do as well.

Incidentally, I'll tell you what that super-powerful technique was.

그건 그렇고, 제가 말한 그 '최고의 기술'이 뭐냐면 말이죠.

바로 파인만 도표 입니다.

It was the technique of Feynman diagrams.

(Laughter)

He did it again in 1968.

1968년에도 같은 일이 있었습니다.

In 1968, in my own university -- I wasn't there at the time --

1968년에 저희 대학에서의 일인데요.

1968년에 전 그 대학에 재직중은 아니었지만

they were exploring the structure of the proton.

사람들이 양성자의 구조에 대해 연구하고 있습니다.

The proton is obviously made of a whole bunch of little particles;

양성자는 작은 미립자들이

뭉쳐져서 만들어집니다.

this was more or less known.

그 정도로만 알고 있었죠.

And the way to analyze it was, of course, Feynman diagrams.

물론 그 것을 분석하는 방법은 파인만 도표였죠.

That's what Feynman diagrams were constructed for --

to understand particles.

The experiments that were going on were very simple:

그리고 아주 간단한 실험을 실시했죠.

단순하게 양성자를 취해서

you simply take the proton,

and you hit it really sharply with an electron.

전자로 그것을 매우 빠르게 때리는 겁니다.

파인만 도표의 내용은 그게 다였습니다.

This was the thing the Feynman diagrams were for.

유일한 문제점은

The only problem was that Feynman diagrams are complicated.

파인만 도표가 복잡했다는 것이었죠.

어려운 적분식으로 구성되어있습니다.

They're difficult integrals.

If you could do all of them, you would have a very precise theory,

그걸 다 풀 수만 있다면, 매우 정확한 이론을 세울 수 있겠죠.

하지만 그럴 수 없었습니다. 너무 복잡했거든요.

but you couldn't -- they were just too complicated.

연구자들은 그걸 해결하고자 했습니다.

People were trying to do them.

하나의 순환도표는 가능합니다. 한개의 순환루프 정도는 괜찮죠.

You could do a one-loop diagram. Don't worry about one loop.

하나, 두개의 순환 -- 세 개의 순환도표까지는 가능할 지도 모르겠네요.

One loop, two loops -- maybe you could do a three-loop diagram,

하지만 그 이상은 어쩔 도리가 없죠.

but beyond that, you couldn't do anything.

파인만은 이렇게 말했습니다. "다 잊어버리고,

Feynman said, "Forget all of that.

Just think of the proton

양성자를 작은 입자들의

as an assemblage, a swarm, of little particles."

집합체라는 것만 생각하라고 --

작은 입자들의 무리라고 말이야"

He called them "partons."

그는 그걸 "파톤(partons)"라고 이름지었습니다.

He said, "Just think of it as a swarm of partons moving real fast."

그가 말하길 "그걸 정말 빠르게 움직이는 파톤의

그것들은 굉장히 빠르게 움직이기 때문에

Because they're moving real fast,

relativity says the internal motions go very slow.

상대성이론에 따라 내부운동은 매우 느립니다.

The electron hits it suddenly --

it's like taking a very sudden snapshot of the proton.

그건 순간적으로 양성자의 사진을 찍는 것과도 같습니다.

무엇을 보게 될까요?

What do you see?

정지해 있는 파톤 입자들을 보게 되죠.

You see a frozen bunch of partons.

They don't move,

그것들은 움직이지 않습니다. 실험이 진행되는 동안

and because they don't move during the course of the experiment,

움직이지 않기 때문에,

you don't have to worry about how they're moving.

그것들이 어떻게 움직일지를 고민할 필요가 없죠.

그들 사이에 작용하는 힘을 고민할 필요가 없습니다.

You don't have to worry about the forces between them.

단지 그걸 정지해 있는

You just get to think of it as a population of frozen partons."

파톤의 집단으로서

생각하기만 하면 됩니다.

This was the key to analyzing these experiments.

이것이 바로 그 실험을 분석하는 실마리였습니다.

Extremely effective.

Somebody said the word "revolution" is a bad word.

I suppose it is, so I won't say "revolution,"

but it certainly evolved very, very deeply our understanding of the proton,

and of particles beyond that.
