We're holding hands,

My siblings and I were waiting for my mother to come back

She was there because my grandmother had cancer surgery that day.

Finally, the doors opened,

and she said,

She started sobbing and immediately said,

"We must make arrangements.

Your grandmother's dying wish was to be buried back home in Korea."

おばあちゃんは 最期まで祖国 韓国の墓に入りたいと言っていたわ」

I was barely 12 years old, and when the shock wore off,

私はまだ12歳で ショックが収まった頃

my mother's words were ringing in my ears.

母の言葉が 耳に鳴り響いていました

My grandmother wanted to be buried back home.

祖母は 祖国の墓に 入ることを望んだのだ

We had moved from Korea to Argentina six years prior,

私達が 韓国からアルゼンチンに 引っ越したのは その６年前のことでした

without knowing any Spanish, or how we were going to make a living.

スペイン語も全く話せず 生計を立てる方法も知らずに

And upon arrival, we were immigrants who had lost everything,

到着するとすぐ 私達は全てを失った 移民となったので

so we had to work really hard to rebuild our lives.

生活を立て直すために 本当に 必死で働かねばなりませんでした

So it hadn't occurred to me that after all these years,

そうやって 何年か過ごした後だったので

back home was still in Korea.

私の祖国が まだ韓国のままだとは 感じられなかったのです

It made me ponder where I would want to be buried someday,

そこで将来 私はどこの墓に入りたいか 考えてみました

where home was for me,

私にとっての祖国はどこなのか

and the answer was not obvious.

その答えはすぐには分からず

And this really bothered me.

思い悩みました

So this episode launched a lifelong quest for my identity.

これがアイデンティティを探す 私の生涯にわたる旅の始まりでした

I was born in Korea -- the land of kimchi;

私はキムチの国 韓国で生まれ

raised in Argentina,

アルゼンチンで育ちました

where I ate so much steak that I'm probably 80 percent cow by now;

そこで ステーキをたくさん食べたので 今 私の身体の80％は きっと牛です

and I was educated in the US,

そして アメリカで教育を受け

where I became addicted to peanut butter.

そこでは ピーナツバターに はまりました

(Laughter)

During my childhood, I felt very much Argentinian,

子供の頃 自分は アルゼンチン人だと 強く感じていました

but my looks betrayed me at times.

しかし時々 外見のせいで そうでないことに気づきました

I remember on the first day of middle school,

中学校に入学した 初日のことを覚えています

my Spanish literature teacher came into the room.

スペイン文学の先生が 部屋に入ってきて

She scanned all of my classmates,

クラスの生徒を見回し

and she said,

言いました

"You -- you have to get a tutor,

「あなた―あなたには 家庭教師が必要ね

otherwise, you won't pass this class."

そうしないと 落ちこぼれてしまうわ」

But by then I was fluent in Spanish already,

しかし その頃には 既にスペイン語を流暢に話せていました

so it felt as though I could be either Korean or Argentinian,

その時思いました 自分は韓国人か アルゼンチン人のどちらかにはなれるけれど

but not both.

その両方にはなれないのだと―

It felt like a zero-sum game,

それはまるで ゼロサムゲームのようで

where I had to give up my old identity

新しいアイデンティティを 手に入れるには

to be able to gain or earn a new one.

古いアイデンティティを捨てる 必要があると感じました

So when I was 18, I decided to go to Korea,

18歳の頃 韓国に行くことを決めました

hoping that finally I could find a place to call home.

ようやく 祖国と呼べる場所を 見つけられると期待したのです

But there people asked me,

しかし そこで訊かれたのはこれです

"Why do you speak Korean with a Spanish accent?"

「なぜスペイン語訛りの 韓国語を話すの？」

(Laughter)

（笑）

And, "You must be Japanese because of your big eyes

また「目が大きくて 外国人のようなボディランゲージをするから

and your foreign body language."

日本人に違いない」と

And so it turns out that I was too Korean to be Argentinian,

つまり私は アルゼンチン人にしては 韓国人らし過ぎるし

but too Argentinian to be Korean.

韓国人にしては アルゼンチン人らし過ぎるのです

And this was a pivotal realization to me.

私にとって これは かなり重要な発見でした

I had failed to find that place in the world to call home.

世界で 祖国と呼べる場所を 見つけることは出来ませんでした

But how many Japanese-looking Koreans who speak with a Spanish accent --

しかし 日本人のような外見の韓国人が スペイン語のアクセントで―

or even more specific, Argentinian accent --

より具体的には アルゼンチンのアクセントで

do you think are out there?

韓国語を話す人がどれくらいいると 思いますか？

Perhaps this could be an advantage.

おそらくこれは 私の武器になるでしょう

It was easy for me to stand out,

私は目立ちやすかったのです

which couldn't hurt in a world that was rapidly changing,

自分のスキルが 一夜にして 時代遅れとなることもある

where skills could become obsolete overnight.

目まぐるしく変わる世界において それは長所になります

So I stopped looking for that 100 percent commonality

だから私は 出会った人に 100％の共通項をさがすのをやめました

with the people that I met.

Instead, I realized that oftentimes, I was the only overlap

その代わりに 頻繁に 争っているグループの間で

between groups of people that were usually in conflict with each other.

私が唯一の共通項になることが よくあると気付きました

So with this realization in mind,

そのことを頭におきながら

I decided to embrace all of the different versions of myself --

私は自分の中の異なる部分を 全て愛そうと決めました

even allow myself to reinvent myself at times.

時には 新しい自分になっていくのに 身を任せました

So for example, in high school,

I have to confess I was a mega-nerd.

実は大のガリ勉でした

I had no sense of fashion -- thick glasses, simple hairstyle --

ファッションセンスのかけらもなく 分厚い眼鏡に地味な髪形で

you can get the idea.

容易に想像できると思います

I think, actually, I only had friends because I shared my homework.

私に友達がいたのはきっと 宿題を見せてあげていたからでしょう

That's the truth.

実はそうなんです

But once at university,

しかし かつて大学で

I was able to find a new identity for myself,

自分の新しいアイデンティティを 見つけることができました

and the nerd became a popular girl.

ガリ勉の子が クラスの人気者になったのです

But it was MIT,

ただ MITでの出来事なので

so I don't know if I can take too much credit for that.

そんなに凄いことでは ないかもしれません

As they say over there,

MITの学生は言っていました

"The odds are good,

「付き合える可能性は高くても

but the goods are odd."

相手は変な奴ばかり」

(Laughter)

I switched majors so many times that my advisors joked

専攻を何度も変えたので アドバイザーは冗談で

that I should get a degree in "random studies."

私は「ランダム研究」で 学位を取るべきだと言いました

(Laughter)

（笑）

I told this to my kids.

子供達にも この話をしています

And then over the years, I have gained a lot of different identities.

数年が経ち 私はたくさんの 異なるアイデンティティを見つけました

I started as an inventor, entrepreneur, social innovator.

発明家、起業家、社会革新者に始まり

Then I became an investor,

その後 投資家となり

a woman in tech,

テクノロジー分野の女性

a teacher.

And most recently, I became a mom,

or as my toddler says repeatedly,

"Mom!" day and night.

Even my accent was so confused --

its origin was so obscure,

that my friends called it, "Rebecanese."

But reinventing yourself can be very hard.

You can face a lot of resistance at times.

When I was nearly done with my PhD,

I got bitten by that entrepreneurial bug.

I was in Silicon Valley,

and so writing a thesis in the basement didn't seem as interesting

as starting my own company.

つまらないと思ってしまったので

So I went to my very traditional Korean parents,

私は保守的な韓国人の両親に 会いに行きました

who are here today,

２人は今日この場に来ています

with the task of letting them know

that I was going to drop out from my PhD program.

博士課程を中退すると 伝えなければなりませんでした

You see, my siblings and I are the first generation to go to university,

私達兄妹は 家族で初めて 大学に進学した世代でしたので

so for a family of immigrants, this was kind of a big deal.

移民の家族にとって これは 大きな事件でした

You can imagine how this conversation was going to go.

この会話がどんな結果になるか 想像できると思います

But fortunately, I had a secret weapon with me,

しかし幸いにも 私には 秘密の切り札がありました

which was a chart that had the average income of all of the graduates

from Stanford PhD programs,

and then the average income of all the dropouts

スタンフォード大の修士課程を

from Stanford graduate programs.

(Laughter)

I must tell you -- this chart was definitely skewed

by the founders of Google.

But my mom looked at the chart,

しかし母は 表を見て

and she said,

"Oh, for you -- follow your passion."

「まあ 自分のために 情熱を追いかけなさい」

(Laughter)

Hi, Mom.

ママ どうも

Now, today my identity quest is no longer to find my tribe.

今 私のアイデンティティ探しの旅は もう同じ仲間を探すことではありません

It's more about allowing myself

自分自身の変化の可能性を受け入れ

to embrace all of the possible permutations of myself

自分の外にある多様性を 探すのではなく

and cultivating diversity within me

自分自身の中にある 多様性を探すことに変わりました

and not just around me.

My boys now are three years and five months old today,

現在私には ３歳と 生後５か月の息子がいます

and they were already born with three nationalities

彼らは生まれながらに ３つの国籍を持ち

and four languages.

４つの言語に囲まれています

I should mention now that my husband is actually from Denmark --

私の夫はデンマーク出身だからと お伝えするべきですね

just in case I don't have enough culture shocks in my life,

私の人生にカルチャーショックという 非日常がなくならないように

I decided to marry a Danish guy.

デンマーク人男性と 結婚することにしました

In fact, I think my kids will be the first Vikings

きっと 私の子供たちは

who will have a hard time growing a beard when they become older.

大人になっても 髭が生えずに苦労する 初のバイキングになるでしょう

(Laughter)

（笑）

Yeah, we'll have to work on that.

ええ 将来 大変でしょうね

But I really hope that they will find that their multiplicity

しかし 私は彼らの多様性が 人生において

is going to open and create a lot of doors for them in their lives,

たくさんの可能性を 引き出してくれると信じています

and that they can use this as a way to find commonality

そして現在 急速にグローバル化する世界で

in a world that's increasingly global today.

共通項を見つけるのに 役立ててもらえると思います

I hope that instead of feeling anxious and worried

ある１つの箱に収まらないとか

that they don't fit in that one box

自らのアイデンティティが 合わなくなる日が来るのではと

or that their identity will become irrelevant someday,

不安や心配を感じるのではなく

that they can feel free to experiment

ためらわず 自分を試し

and to take control of their personal narrative and identity.

自身の物語やアイデンティティを 自分でつかんでほしいです

I also hope that they will use their unique combination

そして 彼らの 独特に入り混じった

of values and languages and cultures and skills

価値観、言語、文化、能力を使って

to help create a world

アイデンティティが

where identities are no longer used to alienate what looks different,

自身と異なるものを 遠ざけるのではなく 人々を繋げるものとなる世界を

but rather, to bring together people.

作っていってほしいと思います

And most importantly, I really hope that they find tremendous joy

そして最も大事なことですが 彼らには 未知の領域を旅する中で

in going through these uncharted territories,

大きな喜びを見つけてほしい と思います

because I know I have.

私もそうだったからです

Now, as for my grandmother,

さて 私の祖母についてですが

her last wish was also her last lesson to me.

彼女の最期の願いは 私への最期の教えでもありました

It turns out that it was never about going back to Korea

実は 祖母は韓国に帰って

and being buried there.

そこで埋葬されたいと 願ったのではなく

It was about resting next to her son,

自分の息子の隣で 永眠したいと願っていたのでした

who had died long before she moved to Argentina.

その息子は 祖母がアルゼンチンに 移住するずっと前に亡くなりました

What mattered to her was not the ocean

祖母にとって大事だったのは

that divided her past and new world;

彼女の過去と新しい世界とを 隔てた海ではなく

it was about finding common ground.

世界に接点を見いだすこと だったのです
