We're holding hands,

हम हाथ थाम कर

staring at the door.

दरवाजे की तरफ देख रहे थे|

My siblings and I were waiting for my mother to come back

मेरे भाई -बहन और मैं अपनी माँ की प्रतीक्षा

कर रहे थे अस्पताल से बाहर आने के की|

from the hospital.

She was there because my grandmother had cancer surgery that day.

वो वहां थी क्योंकि मेरी दादी का उस दिन कैंसर का आपरेशन होना था|

Finally, the doors opened,

अन्ततः, दरवाजा खुला,

and she said,

और उसने कहा,

"She's gone.

वो गयी|

She's gone."

"वो अब इस दुनिया में नहीं है|

She started sobbing and immediately said,

वो सुबकने लगीं और तुरंत बोली,

"We must make arrangements.

"हमने व्यवस्थाएं कर लीं हैं,

Your grandmother's dying wish was to be buried back home in Korea."

तुम्हारी दादी माँ की अंतिम इच्छा थी कि उन्हें उनकी जन्मभूमि

कोरिया में ही दफनाया जाय

I was barely 12 years old, and when the shock wore off,

मैं उस समय केवल १२ साल की थी और जब शोक कम हुआ

my mother's words were ringing in my ears.

मेरी माँ के शब्द मेरे कानों में गूंज रहे थे|

My grandmother wanted to be buried back home.

मेरी दादी की इच्छा थी की उसे जन्मभूमि में ही दफनाया जाय|

We had moved from Korea to Argentina six years prior,

हम कोरिया से अर्जेंटाइना छः वर्ष पहले ही आये थे,

without knowing any Spanish, or how we were going to make a living.

हमें स्पेनिश भी बोलनी नहीं आती थी

नहीं मालूम था की हम अपना जीवनयापन कैसे करेंगे|

And upon arrival, we were immigrants who had lost everything,

और पहुँचने पर, हम प्रवासी थे जिनका सब कुछ खो चुका है|

so we had to work really hard to rebuild our lives.

हमें अपना जीवन फिर से शुरू करने के लिए बहुत कठिन परिश्रम करना था|

So it hadn't occurred to me that after all these years,

इतना मैंने इन सालों में कभी नहीं किया था,

back home was still in Korea.

हमारा घर कोरिया में ही था|

It made me ponder where I would want to be buried someday,

ये प्रश्न मुझे कुरेद रहा था कि किसी दिन मैं खुद को कहाँ दफनवाना पसंद करुँगी

where home was for me,

मेरा घर कहाँ था,

and the answer was not obvious.

और उत्तर इतना आसान नहीं था|

And this really bothered me.

ये प्रश्न मुझे वाकई बहुत परेशान कर रहा था

So this episode launched a lifelong quest for my identity.

इस विचार के आते ही

मेरी पहचान का संकट जीवन भर के लिए खड़ा हो गया|

I was born in Korea -- the land of kimchi;

मैं किमची की भमि - कोरिया में पैदा हुई:

raised in Argentina,

अर्जेंटाइना में बड़ी हुई,

where I ate so much steak that I'm probably 80 percent cow by now;

जहाँ मैंने इतना गाय का मांस खाया है की अब मैं ८० प्रतिशत गाय बन गयी हूँ|

and I was educated in the US,

और मेरी शिक्षा अमेरिका में हुई,

where I became addicted to peanut butter.

जहाँ मुझे मूंगफली के मक्खन की लत पड़ गयी है

(Laughter)

During my childhood, I felt very much Argentinian,

बचपन में मैं स्वयं को बहुत अर्जेंटीनियन महसूस करती थी,

but my looks betrayed me at times.

लेकिन कई बार मेरी शक्ल ने मेरा साथ नहीं दिया|

I remember on the first day of middle school,

मिडिल स्कूल की कक्षा का वह पहला दिन मुझे याद है

my Spanish literature teacher came into the room.

जब मेरी स्पेनिश शिक्षिका कक्षा में आयी

She scanned all of my classmates,

तो उनसे कक्षा के सभी विद्यार्थियों को देखते

and she said,

हुए कहा,

"You -- you have to get a tutor,

" तुम्हें -- एक एक निजी शिक्षिका तो चाहिए ही,

otherwise, you won't pass this class."

नहीं तो तुम लोग इस कक्षा में पास ही नहीं होगे।"

But by then I was fluent in Spanish already,

तब तक मैं अच्छी स्पेनिश सीख गयी थी

so it felt as though I could be either Korean or Argentinian,

तो महसूस हुआ कि मैं कोरियन या अर्जेन्टीनियन, दोनों में से कोई एक हो सकती हूँ,

but not both.

लेकिन दोनों नहीं|

It felt like a zero-sum game,

कुछ मेरी समझ में नहीं आ रहा था,

where I had to give up my old identity

मैं अपनी पुरानी पहचान को कैसे भुलाउं

to be able to gain or earn a new one.

ताकि मैं एक नयी पहचान पा सकूं|

So when I was 18, I decided to go to Korea,

जब मैं १८ साल की हुई तो मैंने कोरिया जाने का निश्चय किया,

hoping that finally I could find a place to call home.

इस आशा से कि शायद मुझे एक जगह मिले जिसे मैं घर कह सकूँ|

But there people asked me,

लेकिन वहां लोगों ने मुझसे पूछा,

"Why do you speak Korean with a Spanish accent?"

"कि तुम कोरियन स्पेनिश उच्चारण से क्यों बोलती हो?"

And, "You must be Japanese because of your big eyes

और, "तुम्हारी बड़ी आँखों से लगता है तुम जरूर जापानी होगी

and your foreign body language."

और तुम्हारे हाव-भाव भी विदेशी हैं|"

And so it turns out that I was too Korean to be Argentinian,

इससे ये स्पष्ट हुआ कि मैं अर्जेन्टीनिंयन से कोरियन अधिक हूँ

but too Argentinian to be Korean.

या कोरियन से अधिक अर्जेन्टीनियन

And this was a pivotal realization to me.

ये मेरे लिए निर्णात्मक अनुभूति थी|

I had failed to find that place in the world to call home.

मैं विश्व में एक जगह जिसे मैं घर कह सकूँ पाने में असफल हो चुकी थी

But how many Japanese-looking Koreans who speak with a Spanish accent --

लेकिन जापानी लगने वाले कोरियन लोग हैं जो स्पेनिश उच्चारण से बोलते हैं --

or even more specific, Argentinian accent --

या ख़ास तौर से कहूं अर्जेन्टीनियन उच्चारण से--

do you think are out there?

आप क्या सोचते है, कुछ हैं?

Perhaps this could be an advantage.

ये एक तरह से लाभदायक भी हो सकता है|

It was easy for me to stand out,

मेरे लिए इसका सामना करना आसान हो गया,

which couldn't hurt in a world that was rapidly changing,

जो तेजी से बदल रही दुनिया को ज्यादा आघात नहीं पहुंचाता

where skills could become obsolete overnight.

जहाँ पर कुशलताएं रातों रात पुरानी हो जातीं हैं,

So I stopped looking for that 100 percent commonality

तो फिर मैंने शतप्रतिशत सामान्यताएँ ढूंढ़ना बंद कर दिया

with the people that I met.

जिन लोगों से भी मैं मिली|

Instead, I realized that oftentimes, I was the only overlap

बल्कि, कभी मुझे ये आभास हुआ कि मेरा दोहरा व्यक्तित्व है

between groups of people that were usually in conflict with each other.

उन लोगों के समूहों के बीच जो परस्पर प्रतिद्वंदी हैं|

So with this realization in mind,

ये आत्मज्ञान होते ही

I decided to embrace all of the different versions of myself --

मैंने निश्चय किया स्वयं के नितांत नए स्वरुप का --

even allow myself to reinvent myself at times.

यहाँ तक कि स्वयं की स्वीकरोक्ति

So for example, in high school,

उदाहरण के लिए, जैसे हाई स्कूल में,

I have to confess I was a mega-nerd.

मुझे स्वीकारना पड़ा कि मैं एक। .....

I had no sense of fashion -- thick glasses, simple hairstyle --

मझे फैशन की कोई जानकारी नहीं थी -- मोटा सा चश्मा और, सरल केश विन्यास --

you can get the idea.

आप देख सकते हैं|

I think, actually, I only had friends because I shared my homework.

मैं सोचती हूँ कि वास्तव में मेरे दोस्त केवल इसलिए थे

क्योंकि मैं अपना गृहकार्य उनको दिखा देती थी|

That's the truth.

ये सचाई थी|

But once at university,

लेकिन एक बार विश्वविद्यालय में,

I was able to find a new identity for myself,

and the nerd became a popular girl.

और पढ़ाकू लड़की एक लोकप्रिय हो गयी,

But it was MIT,

so I don't know if I can take too much credit for that.

मैं नहीं जानती कि मैं इसका अधिक श्रेय ले सकती हूँ|

As they say over there,

जैसा वो वहां कहते हैं,

"The odds are good,

" विषमतायें अच्छी होती हैं,

but the goods are odd."

लेकिन अच्छाइयाँ विषम होती हैं|"

I switched majors so many times that my advisors joked

मैंने इतनी बार विषय परिवर्तन किये कि मेरे मार्गदर्शक विनोदपूर्वक कहा करते थे

that I should get a degree in "random studies."

कि मुझे "निरुद्देश्य शास्त्र" में उपाधि अर्जित करनी चाहिए|

(Laughter)

I told this to my kids.

ये बात मैंने अपने बच्चों को बताई|

And then over the years, I have gained a lot of different identities.

और कई वर्षों के बाद मुझे अनेक तरह की पहचानें मिलीं|

I started as an inventor, entrepreneur, social innovator.

मैं एक अविष्कारक से प्रारम्भ कर, उद्द्यमी , सामाजिक नवोन्मेषक।

Then I became an investor,

फिर मैं एक पूंजी निवेशक बन गयी,

a woman in tech,

एक महिला प्रद्योगिकी में,

a teacher.

एक शिक्षिका,

And most recently, I became a mom,

और अभी हाल ही मैं एक माँ बन गयी हूँ,

or as my toddler says repeatedly,

मेरा छोटा बच्चा निरंतर कहता है,

"Mom!" day and night.

"माँ !" दिन और रात|

Even my accent was so confused --

यहां तक कि मेरा उच्चारण इतना भ्रमित करने वाला था --

its origin was so obscure,

की उसकी उतपत्ति अस्पष्ट थी,

that my friends called it, "Rebecanese."

मेरे मित्र इसे "रिबेकानीज" कहते थे|

But reinventing yourself can be very hard.

लेकिन स्वयं को पुनः अविष्कृत काने का कार्य दुष्कर था|

You can face a lot of resistance at times.

आपको बहुत प्रतिरोधों का सामना करना पड़ता है|

When I was nearly done with my PhD,

जब मैं अपनी पी.एच. डी. का काम पूरा करने वाली थी

I got bitten by that entrepreneurial bug.

मैं उद्द्यमिता के फेर में पड़ गई|

I was in Silicon Valley,

मैं सिलिकन वैली जा पहुंची|

and so writing a thesis in the basement didn't seem as interesting

और तहखाने में बैठकर शोध प्रबंध लिखने लगी

as starting my own company.

जैसे अपनी कम्पनी खुद शुरू कर रही हो,

So I went to my very traditional Korean parents,

तो मैं अपने अत्यंत पारम्परिक कोरियन माता-पिता के पास गयी,

who are here today,

जो आज यहां उपस्थित हैं,

with the task of letting them know

उन्हें ये बताने के लिए कि मैं

that I was going to drop out from my PhD program.

पी.एच.डी. उपाधि का कार्यकम त्यागने वाली हूँ|

You see, my siblings and I are the first generation to go to university,

आप देखिये, मेरे भाई बहन और मैं विश्वविद्यालय जाने वालों की प्रथम पीढ़ी थे

so for a family of immigrants, this was kind of a big deal.

एक प्रवासी परिवार के लिए, ये एक बहुत बड़ी बात थी,

You can imagine how this conversation was going to go.

आप कल्पना कर सकते हैं कि कैसा संवाद हमारे बीच होने जा रहा था|

But fortunately, I had a secret weapon with me,

लेकिन सौभाग्य से मेरे पास एक गुप्त हथियार था,

which was a chart that had the average income of all of the graduates

वो था एक चार्ट जिसमें सभी स्नातकों की औसत आय थी

from Stanford PhD programs,

जो स्टैनफोर्ड पी.एच.डी. कार्यकम में थे|

and then the average income of all the dropouts

और फिर कार्यक्रम छोड़ने वालों की औसत आय

I must tell you -- this chart was definitely skewed

by the founders of Google.

But my mom looked at the chart,

लेकिन मेरी माँ ने चार्ट देखा,

and she said,

और कहा,

"Oh, for you -- follow your passion."

" तुम्हें तो अपनी रूचि का काम करना चाहिए|"

Hi, Mom.

माँ !

Now, today my identity quest is no longer to find my tribe.

अब, आज पहचान पाने की मेरी जिज्ञासा अब अपने कुनबे को पाने की नहीं है|

It's more about allowing myself

ये है स्वयं को पाने की

to embrace all of the possible permutations of myself

ताकि स्वयं की सभी संभावित संभावनाओं को स्पर्श किया जा सके

and cultivating diversity within me

और स्वयं की अन्तर्निहित विविधता को पोषित किया जा सके

and not just around me.

केवल मेरे चारों ओर नहीं|

My boys now are three years and five months old today,

अब मेरे बच्चे ३ साल और ५ महीने के हुए हैं आज,

and they were already born with three nationalities

और जन्म से उनकी ३ राष्टीयतायें हैं

and four languages.

और ४ भाषायें|

I should mention now that my husband is actually from Denmark --

अब मुझे ये बताना चाहिए कि मेरे पति डेनमार्क के हैं --

just in case I don't have enough culture shocks in my life,

मेरे जीवन में समुचित सांस्कृतिक आघातों की कमी न लगे

I decided to marry a Danish guy.

मैंने एक डेनिश व्यक्ति से विवाह करने का निर्णय लिया

In fact, I think my kids will be the first Vikings

वास्तव में मैं सोचती हूँ मेरे बच्चे पहले वाइकिंग्स होंगे

who will have a hard time growing a beard when they become older.

उन्हें कठिनाइयों का सामना करना पड़ेगा जब उनकी दाढ़ी सफ़ेद होने लगेगी|

Yeah, we'll have to work on that.

जी हाँ, हमें उस पर काम करना पड़ेगा|

But I really hope that they will find that their multiplicity

लेकिन मुझे आशा है कि वो अपनी विविधता को ढूँढ निकालेंगे

is going to open and create a lot of doors for them in their lives,

जो उनके जीवन में बहुत से अवसरों के दरवाजे खोल देगी,

and that they can use this as a way to find commonality

और वो इसका उपयोग अपनी सामान्यताएँ प्राप्त करने में करेंगे

in a world that's increasingly global today.

एक ऐसी दुनिया में जो आज क्रमशः वैश्विक होती जा रही है

I hope that instead of feeling anxious and worried

मैं आशा करती हूँ कि उदिग्न और चिन्तित महसूस करने स्थान पर

that they don't fit in that one box

कि वो सभी को एक साथ कैसे करें

or that their identity will become irrelevant someday,

नहीं तो उनकी पहचान एक दिन अनुपयोगी हो जायेगी,

that they can feel free to experiment

वो प्रयोग करने के लिए स्वतंत्र हैं

and to take control of their personal narrative and identity.

और अपनी व्यक्तिगत विस्तृत पहचान को नियंत्रित करने में|

I also hope that they will use their unique combination

मैं ये भी आशा करती हूँ कि वो अपने इस विशेष संयोग का उपयोग करेंगे

of values and languages and cultures and skills

मूल्यों, भाषाओं, संस्कृतियों और क्षमताओं का

to help create a world

एक ऐसे विश्व का सृजन करने में

where identities are no longer used to alienate what looks different,

जहाँ पर पहचानें को भिन्नता से जोड़कर नहीं देखा जाता हो,

but rather, to bring together people.

बल्कि, जो लोगों को परस्पर जोड़ती हो|

And most importantly, I really hope that they find tremendous joy

और सबसे महत्वपूर्ण ये है कि वो इसमें अत्यंत आनंद प्राप्त करेंगे

in going through these uncharted territories,

इन अजनबी स्थानों से गुजरते हुए,

because I know I have.

क्योंकि मुझे पता है जो मेरे पास है,

Now, as for my grandmother,

अब जैसे मेरी दादी को ही लीजिये ,

her last wish was also her last lesson to me.

उनकी आखरी इच्छा भी मेरे लिए उनकी आखरी सीख थी|

It turns out that it was never about going back to Korea

इससे ये स्पष्ट हुआ कि उसका आश्रय कोरिया वापस जाने के बारे में बिलकुल नहीं था

and being buried there.

और वहां दफनाये जाने का|

It was about resting next to her son,

ये अपने पुत्र के निकट विश्राम करने का था|

who had died long before she moved to Argentina.

जिसकी मृत्यु काफी पहले उनके अर्जेंटीना आने के पहले हो गयी थी|

What mattered to her was not the ocean

उनके लिए महासागर मायने नहीं रखता था

that divided her past and new world;

जो उनके अतीत और नए संसार को विभाजित करता था;

it was about finding common ground.

ये एक सामान्य आधार प्राप्त करने के बारे में था|
