We're holding hands,

She was there because my grandmother had cancer surgery that day.

Finally, the doors opened,

and she said,

"She's gone.

"돌아가셨어."

She's gone."

"할머니가 돌아가셨단다."

She started sobbing and immediately said,

엄마는 흐느끼기 시작했고 곧이어 말했습니다.

"We must make arrangements.

"여행 일정을 잡아야 해.

Your grandmother's dying wish was to be buried back home in Korea."

너희 할머니가 고향인 한국 땅에 묻어달라는 유언을 남기셨단다."

I was barely 12 years old, and when the shock wore off,

그때 전 겨우 열두 살이었고, 충격이 가시자

my mother's words were ringing in my ears.

엄마의 말이 귓가에 웅웅거렸어요.

My grandmother wanted to be buried back home.

제 할머니가 고향 땅에 묻히고 싶어하셨다니요.

We had moved from Korea to Argentina six years prior,

저희 가족은 6년 전에 한국에서 아르헨티나로 이민을 왔고

without knowing any Spanish, or how we were going to make a living.

스페인어를 할 줄도 모르고, 생계를 꾸릴 방법도 모르는 상황이었죠.

And upon arrival, we were immigrants who had lost everything,

도착하기가 무섭게, 우린 모든 것을 잃은 이민자가 되어 있었어요.

so we had to work really hard to rebuild our lives.

삶을 원래대로 돌려놓기 위해서는 아주 열심히 일해야만 했습니다.

So it hadn't occurred to me that after all these years,

그래서인지 그렇게 몇 년을 지낸 뒤로는

back home was still in Korea.

한국을 고향으로 느껴본 적이 없었어요.

It made me ponder where I would want to be buried someday,

그일로 전 곰곰히 생각해보게 되었습니다.

먼 훗날 나는 어디에 묻히고 싶어할지 어디가 나에게 고향처럼 느껴질지를요.

where home was for me,

and the answer was not obvious.

답은 단번에 떠오르지 않았습니다.

And this really bothered me.

그 점이 정말 괴로웠죠.

So this episode launched a lifelong quest for my identity.

바로 이 사건으로 저의 정체성을 찾기 위한 여정이 시작되었습니다.

I was born in Korea -- the land of kimchi;

저는 한국에서 태어났습니다. 김치의 땅이죠.

raised in Argentina,

그리고 아르헨티나에서 자랐죠.

where I ate so much steak that I'm probably 80 percent cow by now;

그곳에서 스테이크를 너무 많이 먹어서 아마 제 몸의 80%가 소고기일 걸요.

and I was educated in the US,

그리고 전 미국에서 교육받았습니다.

where I became addicted to peanut butter.

미국에서 전 땅콩버터 중독자가 됐죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

During my childhood, I felt very much Argentinian,

어린 시절, 전 제 스스로를 꽤나 아르헨티나인 같다고 느꼈습니다.

but my looks betrayed me at times.

하지만 제 외모가 번번이 절 배신했죠.

I remember on the first day of middle school,

아직도 기억나네요. 중학교에 간 첫 날,

my Spanish literature teacher came into the room.

스페인어 문학 선생님이 교실에 들어오셔서

She scanned all of my classmates,

학생들을 훑어보시더니

and she said,

이렇게 말하시더군요.

"You -- you have to get a tutor,

"너, 넌 개인교사가 필요하겠구나.

otherwise, you won't pass this class."

그렇지 않으면, 수업을 따라갈 수 없을 거야."

But by then I was fluent in Spanish already,

하지만 전 그때 이미 스페인어를 유창하게 말할 수 있었어요.

so it felt as though I could be either Korean or Argentinian,

그때 전 제가 한국인도 될 수 있고, 아르헨티나인도 될 수 있지만

but not both.

둘 다는 될 수 없다고 느꼈습니다.

It felt like a zero-sum game,

마치 제로섬 게임처럼 느껴졌죠.

where I had to give up my old identity

새로운 정체성을 얻기 위해서는

to be able to gain or earn a new one.

제 고유의 정체성을 버려야 했으니까요.

So when I was 18, I decided to go to Korea,

그래서 열여덟 살이 되었을 때, 한국에 가기로 마음먹었습니다.

hoping that finally I could find a place to call home.

고향이라고 부를 수 있는 곳을 찾고 싶었죠.

But there people asked me,

하지만 한국에서 저는 이런 질문들을 받았습니다.

"Why do you speak Korean with a Spanish accent?"

"왜 한국어를 스페인 억양으로 말하세요?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And, "You must be Japanese because of your big eyes

"큰 눈이랑 바디랭귀지로 보아하니

and your foreign body language."

일본인이시군요."

And so it turns out that I was too Korean to be Argentinian,

결국 전 아르헨티나인이 되기엔 너무 한국적이고

but too Argentinian to be Korean.

한국인이 되기엔 너무 아르헨티나인 같았던 거죠.

And this was a pivotal realization to me.

이건 제게 뼈아픈 자각이었습니다.

I had failed to find that place in the world to call home.

이 세상에서 고향이라고 부를 만한 곳을 찾는 데 실패했으니까요.

But how many Japanese-looking Koreans who speak with a Spanish accent --

하지만 일본인처럼 보이고 스페인 억양으로 말하는 한국인,

or even more specific, Argentinian accent --

아니, 정확히 말하면 아르헨티나 억양으로 말하는 한국인이

do you think are out there?

얼마나 될까요?

Perhaps this could be an advantage.

어쩌면 강점이 될 수도 있었을 겁니다.

It was easy for me to stand out,

하룻밤 자고 나면 새로운 기술이 나올 만큼

which couldn't hurt in a world that was rapidly changing,

빠르게 변하는 요즘 세상에서

where skills could become obsolete overnight.

쉽게 두드러져 보일 수 있었으니까요.

So I stopped looking for that 100 percent commonality

그래서 전 저와 100% 똑같은 사람들을 찾는 일을

with the people that I met.

그만뒀습니다.

Instead, I realized that oftentimes, I was the only overlap

대신 제가 깨닫게 된 것은

너무나 다른 두 집단 사이에 제가 걸쳐져 있을 뿐이라는 거였습니다.

between groups of people that were usually in conflict with each other.

So with this realization in mind,

이 깨달음을 간직한 채

I decided to embrace all of the different versions of myself --

저의 다양한 모습을 모두 포용하기로 마음먹었어요.

even allow myself to reinvent myself at times.

때로는 다른 모습을 보이는 것도 괜찮다고 여겼어요.

So for example, in high school,

예를 들어, 고등학교에서

I have to confess I was a mega-nerd.

저는 완전 '범생이'였어요.

I had no sense of fashion -- thick glasses, simple hairstyle --

패션 감각도 없었고, 두꺼운 안경에, 평범한 헤어스타일이었죠.

you can get the idea.

어땠는지 상상이 되시죠?

I think, actually, I only had friends because I shared my homework.

제게 친구가 있었던 유일한 이유는 숙제를 보여줬기 때문인 것 같아요.

That's the truth.

그게 진실입니다.

But once at university,

하지만, 대학에서

I was able to find a new identity for myself,

전 새로운 정체성을 스스로 발견했습니다.

and the nerd became a popular girl.

그리고 '범생이'는 '인기 많은 여자애'가 됐죠.

But it was MIT,

하지만 제가 다닌 MIT에서는 인기는 딱히 믿을만한 게 못 되죠.

so I don't know if I can take too much credit for that.

As they say over there,

MIT 학생들 사이에서는

"The odds are good,

"이상한 애가 좋은 애지만

but the goods are odd."

좋은 애는 이상하다"는 말이 있거든요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I switched majors so many times that my advisors joked

제가 전공을 너무 많이 바꾼 탓에

지도교수님들은 제가 '아무학과' 학위를 따게 생겼다고 농담을 하실 정도였어요.

that I should get a degree in "random studies."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I told this to my kids.

전 이걸 제 아이들에게 말해줬습니다.

And then over the years, I have gained a lot of different identities.

그리고 시간이 지나면서, 저는 다양한 정체성을 갖게 됐습니다.

I started as an inventor, entrepreneur, social innovator.

발명가, 기업가, 사회혁신가를 시작으로

Then I became an investor,

투자자가 되기도 했고

a woman in tech,

기술 분야의 여성에

a teacher.

선생님까지 되었습니다.

And most recently, I became a mom,

그리고 최근에는 엄마가 되었죠.

or as my toddler says repeatedly,

제 아이는 밤이나 낮이나

"Mom!" day and night.

"엄마!"하고 끊임없이 부른답니다.

Even my accent was so confused --

제 억양은 정말 헷갈리고

its origin was so obscure,

어디 억양인지도 정말 모호해서

that my friends called it, "Rebecanese."

제 친구들은 "레베카어"라고 불러요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But reinventing yourself can be very hard.

하지만 자신의 다른 모습을 드러내는 건 어려울 수 있습니다.

You can face a lot of resistance at times.

때로는 그 과정에서 많은 저항들을 마주하기도 하죠.

When I was nearly done with my PhD,

박사과정을 거의 마칠 즈음에

I got bitten by that entrepreneurial bug.

저는 '기업가병'에 걸렸습니다.

I was in Silicon Valley,

당시 실리콘 밸리에 있었는데

and so writing a thesis in the basement didn't seem as interesting

지하실에 처박혀 논문을 쓰는 일보다

as starting my own company.

저만의 회사를 만들고 싶어졌습니다.

So I went to my very traditional Korean parents,

그래서 전 매우 전통적인 한국인인 제 부모님에게 가서,

who are here today,

오늘 여기 오셨는데요.

with the task of letting them know

박사학위 과정을 그만둘 작정이라고 말하려 했어요.

that I was going to drop out from my PhD program.

You see, my siblings and I are the first generation to go to university,

음, 제 형제자매와 저는 가족 중에서 처음으로 대학에 간 세대였는데요.

so for a family of immigrants, this was kind of a big deal.

이민자 가족에게 이건 중요한 문제였어요.

You can imagine how this conversation was going to go.

대화가 어떻게 이어졌을지 충분히 예상하시겠죠?

But fortunately, I had a secret weapon with me,

하지만 다행히도 제게는 비장의 무기가 있었죠.

which was a chart that had the average income of all of the graduates

바로 스탠포드 대학 박사 졸업자들의

from Stanford PhD programs,

평균 임금과

and then the average income of all the dropouts

박사과정을 중퇴한 사람들의

from Stanford graduate programs.

평균 임금을 비교한 자료였어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I must tell you -- this chart was definitely skewed

제 생각에 이 자료는 분명히 구글 설립자들에 의해

by the founders of Google.

조작된 것이 틀림없어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But my mom looked at the chart,

어쨌든 엄마는 그 자료를 보시곤 이렇게 말씀하셨어요.

and she said,

"Oh, for you -- follow your passion."

"그래 널 위해, 네 가슴이 시키는 일을 하렴."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Hi, Mom.

엄마, 안녕.

Now, today my identity quest is no longer to find my tribe.

이제 저의 정체성을 찾는 여정은 제 '동족'을 찾는 일이 아닙니다.

It's more about allowing myself

오히려 제가 가진 여러가지 모습을 스스로 받아들이는 것에 가깝고

to embrace all of the possible permutations of myself

and cultivating diversity within me

제 주변뿐만 아니라 제 안의 다양성을 키우는 거예요.

and not just around me.

My boys now are three years and five months old today,

저는 3살, 그리고 5개월 된 아들이 있는데요.

and they were already born with three nationalities

이미 3개의 국적과 4개의 모국어를 가지고 있습니다.

and four languages.

I should mention now that my husband is actually from Denmark --

사실, 제 남편은 덴마크 사람이고요.

just in case I don't have enough culture shocks in my life,

살면서 문화 충격 받는 일을 방지하려고

I decided to marry a Danish guy.

덴마크 남자와 결혼하기로 결정했어요.

In fact, I think my kids will be the first Vikings

사실, 제 생각에 제 아이들이 커서

who will have a hard time growing a beard when they become older.

수염 기르는 데 어려움을 겪는 최초의 바이킹이 될 거 같아요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Yeah, we'll have to work on that.

뭐, 앞으로 고민해봐야죠.

But I really hope that they will find that their multiplicity

하지만 제가 진짜 바라는 건 아이들이 자신의 다양성을 찾고

is going to open and create a lot of doors for them in their lives,

인생의 여러가지 가능성을 활짝 열어놓고

and that they can use this as a way to find commonality

세계화 요구가 늘어나는 세상에서 공통분모를 찾는 데에

in a world that's increasingly global today.

이 다양성을 쓸 수 있으면 좋겠습니다.

I hope that instead of feeling anxious and worried

아이들이 어떤 틀에 들어맞지 않고

that they don't fit in that one box

때때로 자기의 정체성이 받아들여지지 않는다고 해도

or that their identity will become irrelevant someday,

불안해하거나 걱정하지 않았으면 좋겠습니다.

that they can feel free to experiment

자유롭게 실험해 보고

and to take control of their personal narrative and identity.

자기만의 이야기와 정체성을 만들어나가면 좋겠어요.

I also hope that they will use their unique combination

또, 아이들에게 바라는 것은

가치관, 언어, 문화, 재능의 독특한 조합을 통해서

of values and languages and cultures and skills

to help create a world

다른 세상을 만들면 좋겠어요.

where identities are no longer used to alienate what looks different,

겉모습이 다르다고 해서 사람들을 소외시키지 않고

but rather, to bring together people.

사람들의 연대를 이끌어내는 세상이요.

And most importantly, I really hope that they find tremendous joy

그리고 가장 중요한 건, 제 아이들이 미지의 땅을 마음껏 누비면서

in going through these uncharted territories,

엄청난 기쁨을 찾게 되기를 바랍니다.

because I know I have.

왜냐면 저도 그랬거든요.

Now, as for my grandmother,

자, 다시 할머니 얘기로 돌아가 보면

her last wish was also her last lesson to me.

할머니의 마지막 소원은 제겐 마지막 깨달음이기도 했습니다.

It turns out that it was never about going back to Korea

단순히 한국에 돌아가서

그 땅에 묻히는 게 전부가 아니라는 것을 알게 되었어요.

and being buried there.

It was about resting next to her son,

할머니가 아르헨티나로 오기 오래 전에 죽은

who had died long before she moved to Argentina.

아들 옆에 묻히고 싶으셨던 거였죠.

What mattered to her was not the ocean

할머니에게 중요한 것은

과거의 삶과 새로운 세상을 구분짓는 바다가 아니었습니다.

that divided her past and new world;

중요한 것은 공통분모를 찾는 것이었습니다.

it was about finding common ground.
