Having brain cancer was really, as you can imagine,

shocking news for me.

I knew nothing about cancer.

がんのことは何も知りませんでした

In Western cultures, when you have cancer,

it's as if you disappear in a way.

Your life as a complex human being is replaced by medical data:

複雑な人間としての自分自身は消え 医療データが全てになります

Your images, your exams, your lab values,

a list of medicines.

処方薬などに埋もれてしまうのです

And everyone changes as well.

周りの皆の態度も変わります

You suddenly become a disease on legs.

突然 人というより病気そのものとして 接し始めます

Doctors start speaking a language which you don't understand.

医者はあなたにはわからない 専門用語で喋り出し

They start pointing their fingers

あちこち指さし始めます

at your body and your images.

あなたの体やスキャン画像など 様々です

People start changing as well

家族友人も変わり始めます

because they start dealing with the disease,

病気のことばかりに気が行き

instead of with the human being.

人としてのあなたを 忘れてしまいます

They say, "What did the doctor say?"

出会いがしらに 「先生は何て言ったの？」

before even saying, "Hello."

挨拶もなしに こんな感じになります

And in the meanwhile,

その間 本人は

you're left with questions to which nobody gives an answer.

誰も答えられない疑問に さいなまれます

These are the "Can I?" questions:

「～はできるのか？」という疑問です

Can I work while I have cancer?

「がんでも働いていいのか？」

Can I study? Can I make love? Can I be creative?

「勉強は？」「セックスは？」 「新しいことを考えてもいいのか？」

And you wonder, "What have I done to deserve this?"

「こんな目に遭うなんて 私が何をしたというのか？」

You wonder, "Can I change something about my lifestyle?"

「生活習慣を変えても いいのだろうか？」

You wonder, "Can I do something?

「何かできることはないだろうか？

Are there any other options?"

他に選択肢は？」 こういった疑問ですね

And, obviously, doctors are the good guys in all these scenarios,

そして当然 このシナリオ下では 医者は患者の味方です

because they are very professional and dedicated to curing you.

医療のプロであり 一生懸命 あなたを治そうとしているのですから

But they also are very used to having to deal with patients,

しかし同時に医者は非常に沢山の 患者に接してきたため 慣れが生じ

so I'd say that they sometimes lose the idea that this is torture for you

and that you become, literally, a patient --

"patient" means "the one who waits."

Things are changing, but classically,

状況は変わりつつありますが 従来の慣わしでは

they tend to not engage you in any way to learn about your condition,

to get your friends and family engaged,

家族友人も関わらせてもらえず

or showing you ways in which you can change your lifestyle

治療の過程で起こりうる リスクを最小化するための

to minimize the risks of what you're going through.

生活習慣の変え方を 教えてもらえたりもしません

But instead, you're forced there to wait

では何をするかというと ひたすら待つしかない

in the hands of a series of very professional strangers.

高度な専門家だけど赤の他人からなるチームに 運命を握られているわけです

While I was in the hospital,

私の時は

I asked for a printed-out picture of my cancer

病院で自分のがんの画像を 印刷してもらい

and I spoke with it.

がんに話しかけました―

It was really hard to obtain,

手に入れるのは大変でしたよ

because it's not common practice to ask for a picture of your own cancer.

患者は普通 がんの写真が欲しいなど 言ったりしませんから―

I talked to it and I said,

"Okay, cancer, you're not all there is to me.

There's more to me.

私という人間はもっと複雑なんだ

A cure, whichever it is, will have to deal with the whole of me."

And so, the next day, I left the hospital against medical advice.

I was determined to change my relationship with the cancer

and I was determined to learn more about my cancer

また このがんについて もっと調べたうえでないと

before doing anything as drastic as a surgery.

手術のような大掛かりな治療は 受けないぞと心に決めていました

I'm an artist, I use several forms of open-source technologies

私はアーティストです 仕事の一環で オープンソース技術や

and open information in my practice.

一般公開情報などを 組み合わせて利用しています

So my best bet was to get it all out there, get the information out there,

私が考えた最善のがん対策は 全てを公開し さらけ出し

and use it so that it could be accessed by anyone.

So I created a website, which is called La Cura,

『La Cura』という ウェブサイトを作り

on which I put my medical data, online.

I actually had to hack it

実はハッキングで手に入れたデータです

and that's a thing which we can talk about in another speech.

I chose this word, La Cura --

「La Cura」という言葉を選んだのは―

La Cura in Italian means "the cure" --

イタリア語で「治療法」 という意味ですが―

because in many different cultures,

「治療法」という言葉の意味は

the word "cure" can mean many different things.

文化によって変わるものだからです

In our Western cultures,

西洋では

it means eradicating or reversing a disease,

病気を駆逐したり 患部を回復させるという意味ですが

but in different cultures,

他の文化では

for example, a culture from Asia,

例えばアジアのある地域や

from the Mediterranean, from Latin countries, from Africa,

地中海地域、ラテン系の国や アフリカなどでは

it can mean many more things.

もっと沢山の意味を持っていたりします

Of course, I was interested in the opinions of doctors

もちろん 医者の意見は 聞くつもりでしたよ

and healthcare providers,

医療機関などにもね

but I was also interested in the cure of the artist, of the poet,

しかし他にも アーティストや詩人や

of the designer,

デザイナーが提案する治療法や

of, who knows, the musicians.

ミュージシャンなんかの意見も 参考にしたかったのです

I was interested in the social cure,

他人との交流を通じた治し方

I was interested in the psychological cure,

心理療法的なものだったり

I was interested in the spiritual cure,

スピリチュアルだったり

I was interested in the emotional cure,

情意面でのアプローチなど

I was interested in any form of cure.

あらゆる形での治療法を 募集したのです

And, it worked.

それでどうなったかというと かなりうまくいきました

The La Cura website went viral.

『La Cura』ウェブサイトは あっという間に広がり

I received lots of media attention from Italy and from abroad

イタリア国内や海外の メディア各方面から注目され

and I quickly received more than 500,000 contacts --

あっという間に50万人以上から 連絡がありました

emails, social networking --

most of them were a suggestion on how to cure my cancer,

ほとんどは私のがんの治療法に ついてでしたが

but more of them were about how to cure myself

もっと多かったのが 一個人全体として自分で自分を

治すためのアドバイスでした

as a full individual.

For example, many thousands of videos,

何千ものビデオが送られてきました

images, pictures, art performances

were produced for La Cura.

『La Cura』に届いたのです

He produced a 3D sculpture of my tumor

and put it on sale on Thingiverse.

Now you can have my cancer, too!

Which is a nice thing, if you think about it,

we can share our cancer.

And this was going on --

こういったやりとりが しばらく続きました

scientists, the traditional medicine experts,

科学者に 東洋医学の専門家に

several researchers, doctors --

何人もの学者や医者達―

all connected with me to give advice.

皆が助言をしようと 連絡してきてくれました

With all this information and support,

たくさんの情報と協力の中

I was able to form a team of several neurosurgeons,

一つのチームが 出来上がったのです

traditional doctors,

脳外科医や 東洋医学の医師

oncologists, and several hundred volunteers

がん専門医が何名か そして 何百人ものボランティア

with whom I was able to discuss

このチームとの間で 寄せられた情報について

the information I was receiving, which is very important.

話し合うことができました 非常に大事なことです

And together, we were able to form a strategy for my own cure

そしてチーム皆で一緒に 私だけの治療戦略を立てました

in many languages, according to many cultures.

And the current strategy spans the whole world

and thousands of years of human history,

which is quite remarkable for me.

[Surgery]

The follow-up MRIs showed, luckily, little to no growth of the cancer.

続くMRIスキャンの結果 幸運にもがんはほとんど成長しておらず

So I was able to take my time and choose.

I chose the doctor I wanted to work with,

担当してもらいたい医師を選び

I chose the hospital I wanted to stay in,

入院したい病院を選び

and in the meanwhile, I was supported by thousands of people,

この間 何千人もの人々が 支えてくれました

none of whom felt pity for me.

私をかわいそうだと思う人は 誰もいませんでした

Everyone felt like they could take an active role

誰もが 私がよくなるために 主体的に何かができると

in helping me to get well,

思って動いてくれました

and this was the most important part of La Cura.

そこが『La Cura』で 最も重要な面でした

What are the outcomes?

結果はというと

I'm fine, as you can see, pretty fine.

ご覧の通り 私はピンピンしてます

I had excellent news

そして素晴らしい朗報があります

after the surgery --

手術の後―

I have -- I had a very low-grade glioma,

私のがんは非常にグレードの低い 神経膠腫でした

which is a "good" kind of cancer which doesn't grow a lot.

がんの中でもいわば良性のもので あまり大きくなりません

I have completely changed my life and my lifestyle.

それから私の人生も生活習慣も すっかり変わりました

Everything I did was thoughtfully designed to get me engaged.

私がしたことをまとめると 手術を受けるほんの数分前までに至る

Up until the very last few minutes of the surgery,

自分の関与の仕方を よく考えてデザインしたということです

which was very intense,

手術はかなり大変でしたよ

a matrix of electrodes was implanted in my brain

脳に電極が幾つも複雑に 埋め込まれました

from this side,

頭のこっち側からです

to be able to build a functional map of what the brain controls.

And right before the operation,

we were able to discuss the functional map of my brain

with the doctor, to understand which risks I was running into

どういうリスクがあるのか 何か避けたいことがあるかどうか

and if there were any I wanted to avoid.

Obviously, there were.

起こったら嫌なことは 当然ありますからね

And this openness was really the fundamental part of La Cura.

この情報の公開性こそが 『La Cura』の中核でした

Thousands of people shared their stories, their experiences.

何千人もの人が 自分の経験談を 共有してくれました

Doctors got to talk with people they don't usually consult

医師は 通常ならがんについての 意見を聞くことのないような人々と

when they think about cancer.

対話する機会があったわけです

I'm a self-founding, continuous state of translation

このプロジェクトは 様々な言語間を絶えず行き来しながら

among many different languages,

自然に成長を続けています

in which science meets emotion

ここは科学と感情が同居し

and conventional research meets traditional research.

現代医学と伝統的医学それぞれの研究が 混ざり合う場所なのです

The most important thing of La Cura

『La Cura』で最も重要視されたのが

was to feel like a part of a really engaged and connected society

一つ一つの要素全ての健全さが 全体の健全さを左右する社会

whose wellness really depends on the wellness of all of its components.

全員が深く関与し繋がりあう社会の 一部であるという実感を得ることでした

This global performance is my open-source cure for cancer.

このプロジェクトの集大成は オープンソースのがん治療法ですが

And from what I feel,

こう感じてもいます

it's a cure for me, but for us all.

私個人に対する治療法が 皆への治療法にもなった と
