An underwater art museum, teeming with life | Jason deCaires Taylor

Ten years ago,

10年前

I had my first exhibition here.

I had no idea if it would work or was at all possible,

but with a few small steps and a very steep learning curve,

I made my first sculpture, called "The Lost Correspondent."

Teaming up with a marine biologist and a local dive center,

海洋生物学者 そして 地元のダイビングセンターと連携し

I submerged the work off the coast of Grenada,

ハリケーン・アイバンで 壊滅的被害を受けた―

in an area decimated by Hurricane Ivan.

グレナダの沖合いに 作品を沈めました

And then this incredible thing happened.

そして こんな素晴らしいことが起こりました

It transformed.

作品が生まれ変わったのです

One sculpture became two.

Two quickly became 26.

And before I knew it,

we had the world's first underwater sculpture park.

In 2009, I moved to Mexico and started by casting local fisherman.

This grew to a small community,

to almost an entire movement of people in defense of the sea.

And then finally, to an underwater museum,

Gardening, it seems, is not just for greenhouses.

We've since scaled up the designs:

"Ocean Atlas," in the Bahamas, rising 16 feet up to the surface

to now currently in Lanzarote,

where I'm making an underwater botanical garden,

the first of its kind in the Atlantic Ocean.

Each project, we use materials and designs that help encourage life;

a long-lasting pH-neutral cement provides a stable and permanent platform.

It is textured to allow coral polyps to attach.

We position them down current from natural reefs

so that after spawning, there's areas for them to settle.

The formations are all configured so that they aggregate fish

on a really large scale.

Even this VW Beetle has an internal living habitat

to encourage crustaceans such as lobsters and sea urchins.

So why exhibit my work in the ocean?

さて なぜ作品を海に展示するのでしょう

Because honestly, it's really not easy.

正直なところ これは簡単なことではありません

When you're in the middle of the sea under a hundred-foot crane,

海のど真ん中で 30メートルのクレーンを使って

trying to lower eight tons down to the sea floor,

８トンもの作品を 海底に降ろしていると

you start to wonder whether I shouldn't have taken up watercolor painting instead.

But in the end, the results always blow my mind.

The ocean is the most incredible exhibition space

海は 芸術家にとって 願ってもない―

an artist could ever wish for.

最高の展示場所なんです

You have amazing lighting effects changing by the hour,

刻々と変わる 美しい照明効果のもと

explosions of sand covering the sculptures in a cloud of mystery,

飛び散った砂が 魅惑の雲となり 彫刻を取り巻き

a unique timeless quality

時を超越した その場だけの美が紡がれ

and the procession of inquisitive visitors,

好奇心に満ちた人たちが訪れます

each lending their own special touch to the site.

そのどれもが その場に 特別な色を塗り重ねてゆきます

But over the years,

月日が経つにつれ

I've realized that the greatest thing about what we do,

私は このことがもたらす 素晴らしさに気付きました

the really humbling thing about the work,

is that as soon as we submerge the sculptures,

they're not ours anymore,

because as soon as we sink them,

the sculptures, they belong to the sea.

As new reefs form, a new world literally starts to evolve,

a world that continuously amazes me.

It's a bit of a cliché, but nothing man-made

can ever match the imagination of nature.

Sponges look like veins across the faces.

顔の上の静脈となる海綿動物

Staghorn coral morphs the form.

姿形を一変させるシカツノサンゴ

Fireworms scrawl white lines as they feed.

像の上を這いまわって 白い線を残すウミケムシ

Tunicates explode from the faces.

顔から爆発する被嚢（ひのう）類

Sea urchins crawl across the bodies feeding at night.

夜な夜なエサを食べに はいまわるウニ

Coralline algae applies a kind of purple paint.

紫の絵の具をたらしたかのようなサンゴモ目

The deepest red I've ever seen in my life lives underwater.

海のなかにしかない最高の深紅

Gorgonian fans oscillate with the waves.

ヤギ目のサンゴ虫が織りなす扇子は 波とともに揺れます

Purple sponges breathe water like air.

紫の海綿動物は 水のなかで呼吸し

And grey angelfish glide silently overhead.

グレーエンジェルフィッシュは 静かに頭上をすべりゆきます

And the amazing response we've had to these works

私たちの作品への素晴らしい反響を見て

tells me that we've managed to plug into something really primal,

私は 根本的な何かに つながることができたと感じます

because it seems that these images translate across the world,

これらは 世界中で通用するものだと 思うからです

and that's made me focus on my responsibility as an artist

and about what I'm trying to achieve.

I'm standing here today on this boat in the middle of the ocean,

and this couldn't be a better place

to talk about the really, really important effect of my work.

Because as we all know,

our reefs are dying, and our oceans are in trouble.

So here's the thing:

And I think this is for a reason,

or at least I hope it is.

What I really hope is that people are beginning to understand

that when we think of the environment and the destruction of nature,

that we need to start thinking about our oceans, too.

Since building these sites, we've seen some phenomenal

and unexpected results.

Besides creating over 800 square meters of new habitats and living reef,

visitors to the marine park in Cancun now divide half their time

between the museum and the natural reefs,

providing significant rest for natural, overstressed areas.

Visitors to "Ocean Atlas" in the Bahamas highlighted a leak

from a nearby oil refinery.

The subsequent international media forced the local government

その後の国際メディアの圧力で 地元政府は

to pledge 10 million dollars in coastal cleanups.

The sculpture park in Grenada was instrumental

in the government designating a spot -- a marine-protected area.

Entrance fees to the park now help fund park rangers

to manage tourism and fishing quotas.

The site was actually listed as a "Wonder of the World"

by National Geographic.

紹介されるに至りました

So why are we all here today in this room?

さて 私たちが今日ここに集まった理由―

What do we all have in common?

共通の思いがあるはずです

I think we all share a fear

私たちが共に懸念するのは

that we don't protect our oceans enough.

海を守るための取り組みが 不十分なことです

And one way of thinking about this

べつの言い方をすれば

is that we don't regard our oceans as sacred,

私たちが海を神聖なものと みなしていないのです

and we should.

今こそ必要なことなのに

When we see incredible places --

素晴らしい場所を見たとき―

like the Himalayas or the La Sagrada Família,

例えば ヒマラヤ山脈 サグラダ・ファミリア

or the Mona Lisa, even --

モナリザでも―

when we see these incredible places and things,

素晴らしい場所やものを見たとき

we understand their importance.

私たちはその重要性を理解します

We call them sacred,

神聖であると称え

and we do our best to cherish them, to protect them

心から大事に思い 保護し

and to keep them safe.

厳重に守ろうとします

But in order to do that,

でも その前提として

we are the ones that have to assign that value;

皆でそうした価値を認めることが必要です

otherwise, it will be desecrated

そうしなければ

by someone who doesn't understand that value.

価値を理解しない人に 冒涜されてしまいます

So I want to finish up tonight by talking about sacred things.

ですから 今夜は 神聖なものについて語り 締めくくりたいと思います

When we were naming the site in Cancun,

カンクンの展示場所を名づけるにあたり

we named it a museum for a very important and simple reason:

私たちは とても重要かつシンプルな理由で 「美術館」という名前にしました

museums are places of preservation,

美術館は保護され―

of conservation and of education.

保全され また教育がされる場所だからです

They're places where we keep objects of great value to us,

美術館は 私たちにとって 偉大な価値あるものを保存し

where we simply treasure them for them being themselves.

ありのままを楽しむための場所です

If someone was to throw an egg at the Sistine Chapel,

誰かがシスティーナ礼拝堂に 卵を投げつけようものなら

we'd all go crazy.

大騒ぎになるでしょう

If someone wanted to build a seven-star hotel

また 誰かがグランド・キャニオンの麓に

at the bottom of the Grand Canyon,

７つ星ホテルを建てると言えば

then we would laugh them out of Arizona.

笑い飛ばし アリゾナから追い出すでしょう

Yet every day we dredge, pollute and overfish our oceans.

でも 私たちは日々 海底を掘り起こし 海を汚染し 資源の乱獲をしています

And I think it's easier for us to do that,

なぜ そうなってしまうかというと

because when we see the ocean,

海を見ても 私たちの行動が引き起こす惨事が

we don't see the havoc we're wreaking.

見えないからだと思うのです

Because for most people,

皆さんの多くにとって

the ocean is like this.

海と言えば こうでしょう

And it's really hard

こんなに穏やかで

to think of something that's just so plain and so enormous, as fragile.

こんなに大きなものが もろいなんて考えられないでしょう

It's simply too massive, too vast, too endless.

ただただ大きくて 広くて 終わりがないのですから

And what do you see here?

ここから何が見えるのか？

I think most people actually look past to the horizon.

実際 遥か彼方の水平線しか 見えていないでしょう

So I think there's a real danger

ここに危険がひそんでいます

that we never really see the sea,

海が目に入っていないのです

and if we don't really see it,

海をしっかり見なければ

if it doesn't have its own iconography,

海に まなざしが向けられなければ

if we miss its majesty,

その偉大さが見逃されてしまったら

then there's a big danger that we take it for granted.

あって当然のものとされてしまう 大きな危険があります

Cancun is famous for spring break,

カンクンは 大学生の春休みの旅行先

tequila and foam parties.

テキーラや泡パーティーで有名です

And its waters are where frat boys can ride around on Jet Skis

大学の人気者たちが ジェットスキーや バナナボートを乗り回す姿が

and banana boats.

よく似合う海です

But because of our work there, there's now a little corner of Cancun

私たちは そんなカンクンの海に 作品を沈めて

that is simply precious for being itself.

小さいけれど貴重な 展示コーナーを作りました

And we don't want to stop in Grenada,

私たちは グレナダやカンクン

in Cancun or the Bahamas.

バハマで終わりにはしたくありません

Just last month, I installed these Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

つい先月 私はこれら 『ヨハネの黙示録の四騎士』の像を

in the Thames River,

テムズ川に展示しました

in central London, right in front of the Houses of Parliament,

ロンドン中央部 国会議事堂の真ん前に像を据え

putting a stark message about climate change

気候変動に関する ストレートなメッセージを

in front of the people that have the power to help change things.

物事を変える力を持っている人たちに向け 発信しているのです

Because for me, this is just the beginning of the mission.

私にとって これは始まりに過ぎません

We want to team up with other inventors,

ほかの発明家やクリエーター

creators, philanthropists, educators, biologists,

慈善家や教育者 生物学者と 手に手をとって

to see better futures for our oceans.

私たちの海に より良い未来を つくりたいのです

And we want to see beyond sculpture,

彫刻やアートの その先にあるものを

beyond art, even.

目指したいのです

Say you're a 14-year-old kid from the city,

街で生まれ いまだ海を見たことのない―

and you've never seen the ocean.

14歳の子に 海を語るのに

And instead of getting taken to the natural history museum

自然歴史博物館や水族館に

or an aquarium,

連れていくのではなく

you get taken out to the ocean,

実際に海に連れ出し

to an underwater Noah's Ark,

水中のノアの方舟という

which you can access through a dry-glass viewing tunnel,

ガラスのトンネルを通して

where you can see all the wildlife of the land

地上の野生生物が 海の野生生物の

be colonized by the wildlife of the ocean.

コロニーとなるのを見てもらうのです

Clearly, it would blow your mind.

必ず度肝を抜かれます

So let's think big and let's think deep.

ですから 大きく そして深く考えましょう

Who knows where our imagination and willpower can lead us?

創造力と意思があれば 成し遂げられるはずです

I hope that by bringing our art into the ocean,

私が切に願うのは アートを海に持ち込むことで

that not only do we take advantage of amazing creativity

その素晴らしい創造性や その場の視覚的インパクトを

and visual impact of the setting,

利用するだけではなく

but that we are also giving something back,

私たちが海に何かをお返しすることです

and by encouraging new environments to thrive,

それは新しい環境を育むことかもしれないし

and in some way opening up a new -- or maybe it's a really old way

海に対する新たな見方 もしくは非常に古い見方を

of seeing the seas:

提供することかもしれません

as delicate, precious places,

海が繊細で 貴重な場所であり

worthy of our protection.

保護に値するという見方です

Our oceans are sacred.
