Ten years ago,

10년 전에

I had my first exhibition here.

I had no idea if it would work or was at all possible,

but with a few small steps and a very steep learning curve,

I made my first sculpture, called "The Lost Correspondent."

Teaming up with a marine biologist and a local dive center,

I submerged the work off the coast of Grenada,

in an area decimated by Hurricane Ivan.

And then this incredible thing happened.

It transformed.

One sculpture became two.

Two quickly became 26.

And before I knew it,

we had the world's first underwater sculpture park.

In 2009, I moved to Mexico and started by casting local fisherman.

This grew to a small community,

to almost an entire movement of people in defense of the sea.

Gardening, it seems, is not just for greenhouses.

We've since scaled up the designs:

Each project, we use materials and designs that help encourage life;

a long-lasting pH-neutral cement provides a stable and permanent platform.

It is textured to allow coral polyps to attach.

We position them down current from natural reefs

so that after spawning, there's areas for them to settle.

산란 후에 정착할 곳이 있을 수 있도록 말이죠.

The formations are all configured so that they aggregate fish

조각상들은 모두 많은 물고기를 모여들게 할 수 있도록

on a really large scale.

Even this VW Beetle has an internal living habitat

이 폭스바겐 비틀까지도 안에 바닷가재나 성게같은 갑각류가

to encourage crustaceans such as lobsters and sea urchins.

살 수 있는 서식지가 마련되어 있습니다.

So why exhibit my work in the ocean?

그럼 저는 왜 작품을 바닷속에 전시할까요?

Because honestly, it's really not easy.

솔직히 말하면, 이게 쉽지 않습니다.

When you're in the middle of the sea under a hundred-foot crane,

8톤짜리를 해저에 내려놓으려고

trying to lower eight tons down to the sea floor,

바닷속에서 30m 짜리 기중기 아래에 있노라면

you start to wonder whether I shouldn't have taken up watercolor painting instead.

수채화나 그릴 걸 하는 생각이 들기 시작합니다.

But in the end, the results always blow my mind.

하지만 끝에 가서 얻는 결과들은 저를 짜릿하게 합니다.

The ocean is the most incredible exhibition space

바다는 예술가가 바랄 수 있는

an artist could ever wish for.

최고의 전시장입니다.

You have amazing lighting effects changing by the hour,

멋진 조명은 시시각각 바뀌고

explosions of sand covering the sculptures in a cloud of mystery,

모래는 폭발하면서 조각상을 모래 구름으로 신비롭게 덮습니다.

a unique timeless quality

유일무이하면서도 영원할 모습이죠.

and the procession of inquisitive visitors,

그리고 줄지은 호기심 많은 방문객들은

each lending their own special touch to the site.

모두 박물관에 특별한 손길을 더해 줍니다.

But over the years,

하지만 시간이 지나면서

I've realized that the greatest thing about what we do,

우리가 하는 일 중 가장 훌륭한 건,

the really humbling thing about the work,

이 작품에서 가장 영광스러운 건

is that as soon as we submerge the sculptures,

조각상을 바닷속으로 가라앉히는 순간부터 조각상은 더 이상

they're not ours anymore,

because as soon as we sink them,

the sculptures, they belong to the sea.

As new reefs form, a new world literally starts to evolve,

새로운 암초가 형성되면서 정말 새로운 세상이 만들어집니다.

a world that continuously amazes me.

그 세상은 저를 끊임없이 놀라게 하죠.

It's a bit of a cliché, but nothing man-made

진부한 말이겠지만 사람이 만든 그 어떤 것도

can ever match the imagination of nature.

자연의 상상력을 이길 수 없습니다.

Sponges look like veins across the faces.

해면은 얼굴의 핏줄같고

Staghorn coral morphs the form.

사슴뿔산호는 형태를 변형시킵니다.

Fireworms scrawl white lines as they feed.

유충은 먹이를 먹으면서 하얗게 낙서를 합니다.

Tunicates explode from the faces.

멍게는 얼굴에서 터지고

Sea urchins crawl across the bodies feeding at night.

성게는 밤에 먹이를 먹으면서 몸 위를 기어다닙니다.

Coralline algae applies a kind of purple paint.

산호말과는 보라색 물감을 더해주죠.

The deepest red I've ever seen in my life lives underwater.

제가 본 중에 가장 짙은 빨간색이 바닷속에 있더군요.

Gorgonian fans oscillate with the waves.

부채모양 산호는 파도에 넘실거리고

Purple sponges breathe water like air.

보라색 해면은 물을 공기처럼 들이마십니다.

And grey angelfish glide silently overhead.

회색 열대어는 그 위를 조용히 미끄러지듯 지나갑니다.

And the amazing response we've had to these works

그리고 우리가 이 조각상들로 얻은 놀라운 반응들은

tells me that we've managed to plug into something really primal,

우리가 뭔가 원시적인 것과 연결되게 만들었다는 걸 알려줍니다.

because it seems that these images translate across the world,

전세계 어느 곳이나 이 이미지를 이해할 수 있는 것 같으니까요.

and that's made me focus on my responsibility as an artist

그리고 이것은 예술가로서의 책임과 제가 이루려고 하는 목적에

and about what I'm trying to achieve.

저를 집중하게 만들었습니다.

I'm standing here today on this boat in the middle of the ocean,

저는 오늘 이 바다 한가운데에 있는 보트 위에 서있습니다.

and this couldn't be a better place

제가 하는 일이 가져오는

to talk about the really, really important effect of my work.

정말 중요한 효과에 대해 말하기 더없이 완벽한 곳이죠.

Because as we all know,

왜냐하면 우리 모두

our reefs are dying, and our oceans are in trouble.

산호초가 죽어가고 있고 바다가 위험에 처해있다는 걸 아니까요.

So here's the thing:

사실 제 작품 중에

the most used, searched and shared image

여태껏 제일 많이 사용되고 검색되고 공유된

of all my work thus far is this.

이미지는 이겁니다.

And I think this is for a reason,

제가 생각엔 이유가 있는 것 같습니다.

or at least I hope it is.

적어도 이유가 있기를 바랍니다.

What I really hope is that people are beginning to understand

제가 바라는 건 사람들이 환경과 자연 파괴에 대해 생각할 때

that when we think of the environment and the destruction of nature,

바다에 대해서도 떠올리기 시작해야 한다는 걸

that we need to start thinking about our oceans, too.

이해하기 시작하는 것입니다.

Since building these sites, we've seen some phenomenal

박물관들을 지으면서 우리는 경이롭고 예상하지 못했던

and unexpected results.

결과물을 보아왔습니다.

Besides creating over 800 square meters of new habitats and living reef,

800제곱미터가 넘는 새 서식지와 살아있는 암초가 만들어진 것 외에도

visitors to the marine park in Cancun now divide half their time

칸쿤의 해양 공원 방문객들은 시간을 반으로 쪼개서

between the museum and the natural reefs,

박물관과 자연 암초에서 보내면서

providing significant rest for natural, overstressed areas.

스트레스를 과도하게 받는 자연이 많은 휴식을 취하게 해 줍니다.

Visitors to "Ocean Atlas" in the Bahamas highlighted a leak

바하마스의 "바다의 아틀라스"를 방문한 사람들은

from a nearby oil refinery.

인근의 정유공장에서 일어난 기름유출을 강조했습니다.

The subsequent international media forced the local government

전세계 언론들은 뒤따라 지방정부가 해안을 청소하는 데

to pledge 10 million dollars in coastal cleanups.

천만 달러를 쓰겠다고 약속하게 만들었습니다.

The sculpture park in Grenada was instrumental

그레나다에 있는 조각상 공원은

in the government designating a spot -- a marine-protected area.

정부가 해양보호구역을 설정하는 데 중요한 역할을 했습니다.

Entrance fees to the park now help fund park rangers

공원 입장료는 이제 공원 관리자가 관광객과 어획 할당량을 관리하는

to manage tourism and fishing quotas.

자금으로 쓰입니다.

The site was actually listed as a "Wonder of the World"

이 곳은 내셔널 지오그래픽의 "세계의 불가사의"에

by National Geographic.

이름을 올렸습니다.

So why are we all here today in this room?

그럼 우린 오늘 왜 다들 여기 모여있을까요?

What do we all have in common?

우리의 공통점은 무엇일까요?

I think we all share a fear

제 생각엔 우리 모두 바다를

that we don't protect our oceans enough.

충분히 보호하지 않고 있다는 두려움이 있는 것 같습니다.

And one way of thinking about this

이렇게 생각하는 이유 중 하나는

is that we don't regard our oceans as sacred,

우리가 바다를 신성하게 생각해야 하는데도

and we should.

그렇지 않기 때문입니다.

When we see incredible places --

우리는 히말라야나

like the Himalayas or the La Sagrada Família,

사그라다 파밀리아 대성당이나 아니면 심지어 모나리자같은

or the Mona Lisa, even --

when we see these incredible places and things,

위대한 장소나 물건을 보게되면

we understand their importance.

그 중요성을 이해하고

We call them sacred,

그것들을 신성하다고 말합니다.

and we do our best to cherish them, to protect them

그리고 소중히 간직하고 안전하게 보호하기 위해서

and to keep them safe.

최선을 다합니다.

But in order to do that,

하지만 그러기 위해선

we are the ones that have to assign that value;

우리가 그것들에 가치를 부여해야 합니다.

otherwise, it will be desecrated

그렇게 하지 않으면

by someone who doesn't understand that value.

그 가치를 이해하지 못하는 사람의 손에 훼손됩니다.

So I want to finish up tonight by talking about sacred things.

그래서 저는 신성한 것들에 대한 이야기로 오늘밤을 마무리짓고 싶습니다.

When we were naming the site in Cancun,

칸쿤에 있는 이 장소에 이름을 붙일 때

we named it a museum for a very important and simple reason:

아주 중요하고도 간단한 이유 때문에 박물관이라고 이름지었습니다.

museums are places of preservation,

박물관은 보존과 보호와

of conservation and of education.

교육을 위한 곳입니다.

They're places where we keep objects of great value to us,

우리에게 커다란 가치가 있는 물건들을 두는 곳이자

where we simply treasure them for them being themselves.

그 물건들을 존재 자체만으로도 소중히 여기는 곳이죠.

If someone was to throw an egg at the Sistine Chapel,

누군가가 시스티나 성당에 달걀을 던진다면

we'd all go crazy.

우리는 모두 흥분할 겁니다.

If someone wanted to build a seven-star hotel

누군가 그랜드 캐니언 아래에 7성급 호텔을 짓고 싶어 한다면

at the bottom of the Grand Canyon,

then we would laugh them out of Arizona.

비웃으면서 아리조나 주에서 쫓아내겠죠.

Yet every day we dredge, pollute and overfish our oceans.

그런데도 우리는 매일 바다를 준설하고 물고기를 남획하고 오염시킵니다.

And I think it's easier for us to do that,

제 생각엔 우리가 비교적 쉽게 이럴 수 있는 이유는

because when we see the ocean,

우리가 바다를 볼 때

we don't see the havoc we're wreaking.

우리가 끼치는 피해를 직접 보지 않기 때문인 것 같습니다.

Because for most people,

왜냐하면 대부분의 사람들에게

the ocean is like this.

바다는 이렇거든요.

And it's really hard

평탄하고 거대한 무언가를

to think of something that's just so plain and so enormous, as fragile.

연약하다고 생각하는 건 매우 어렵습니다.

It's simply too massive, too vast, too endless.

바다는 매우 거대하고 넓고 끝이 없습니다.

And what do you see here?

여러분은 뭐가 보이세요?

I think most people actually look past to the horizon.

대부분의 사람들이 지평선 너머를 보는 것 같습니다.

So I think there's a real danger

바로 그게 정말 위험한 겁니다.

that we never really see the sea,

우리는 바다를 제대로 보지 않습니다.

and if we don't really see it,

바다를 제대로 보지 않으면

if it doesn't have its own iconography,

바다만의 상징적 모습이 있지 않으면

if we miss its majesty,

then there's a big danger that we take it for granted.

Cancun is famous for spring break,

tequila and foam parties.

And its waters are where frat boys can ride around on Jet Skis

바다에서 남학생들이 제트 스키와

and banana boats.

바나나 보트를 탑니다.

But because of our work there, there's now a little corner of Cancun

하지만 우리가 칸쿤에서 한 일 덕분에 이제 칸쿤에는 존재만으로도 소중한

that is simply precious for being itself.

아주 작은 부분이 존재합니다.

And we don't want to stop in Grenada,

in Cancun or the Bahamas.

Just last month, I installed these Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

바로 저번달에 저는 "요한계시록의 네 기사"를

in the Thames River,

in central London, right in front of the Houses of Parliament,

국회의사당 바로 앞에 설치했습니다.

putting a stark message about climate change

변화를 가져올 수 있는 힘을 가진 사람들 앞에

in front of the people that have the power to help change things.

기후변화에 대한 메시지를 적나라하게 전해주었죠.

Because for me, this is just the beginning of the mission.

왜냐하면 저한테 이건 제 임무의 시작이거든요.

We want to team up with other inventors,

우리는 바다의 더 나은 미래를 위해

creators, philanthropists, educators, biologists,

다른 투자자들과 조각가, 자선가, 교육자 그리고 생물학자와

to see better futures for our oceans.

같이 일하고 싶습니다.

And we want to see beyond sculpture,

우리는 조각상 너머를, 심지어 예술 너머를 보고 싶습니다.

beyond art, even.

Say you're a 14-year-old kid from the city,

여러분이 바다를 한 번도 본 적 없는

and you've never seen the ocean.

도시에 사는 14살 아이라고 해봅시다.

And instead of getting taken to the natural history museum

여러분을 자연사 박물관이나 수족관에 데려가기 보다는

or an aquarium,

you get taken out to the ocean,

바다로, 물 속에 있는 노아의 방주로 데려간다고 생각해보세요.

to an underwater Noah's Ark,

which you can access through a dry-glass viewing tunnel,

유리터널 속에 들어가서 육지의 야생동물이

where you can see all the wildlife of the land

바닷속의 야생동물에 의해

be colonized by the wildlife of the ocean.

정복당하는 걸 보게된다면

Clearly, it would blow your mind.

여러분은 분명 충격받을 겁니다.

So let's think big and let's think deep.

그럼 좀 더 크게, 깊게 생각해 봅시다.

Who knows where our imagination and willpower can lead us?

우리의 상상력과 의지가 우릴 어디로 데려갈 지 어떻게 아나요?

I hope that by bringing our art into the ocean,

바다에 예술을 가져오는 것이

that not only do we take advantage of amazing creativity

놀라운 상상력과 배경의 시각적 효과를

and visual impact of the setting,

활용하는 것 뿐만 아니라

but that we are also giving something back,

무언가를 환원하는 것이기도 하기를 바랍니다.

and by encouraging new environments to thrive,

그리고 새로운 환경이 번성하는 걸 돕고,

and in some way opening up a new -- or maybe it's a really old way

of seeing the seas:

as delicate, precious places,

worthy of our protection.

Our oceans are sacred.
