Most of these deaths are preventable,

and that doesn't just make me sad,

it makes me angry,

and it makes me determined.

Diarrhea and pneumonia

are among the top two killers

and what we can do to prevent these diseases

It's one of the world's oldest inventions:

Washing hands with soap,

a habit we all take for granted,

can reduce diarrhea by half,

can reduce respiratory infections by one third.

Handwashing with soap

can have an impact

on reducing flu, trachoma, SARS,

They don't look so pretty anymore, right?

Pretty yucky, you would agree with me.

Well, statistics are actually showing

आकड़े दिखाते है कि

that four people out of five

पाँच में से चार लोग

don't wash their hands when they come out of the toilet,

शौचालय से बाहर आतें समय अपने हाथ नहीं धोतें है,

globally.

And the same way,

और उसी तरह,

we don't do it when we've got fancy toilets,

ह्म भी नहीं धोते हमारें फ़ैन्सी शौचलय में

running water, and soap available,

it's the same thing in the countries

where child mortality is really high.

बच्चों की मृत्युदर ज़्यादा है।

What is it? Is there no soap?

क्या बात है? क्या साबुन नहीं है?

Actually, soap is available.

असल मे साबुन उप्ल्ब्ध है।

In 90 percent of households in India,

इन्डिया के ९०% घरों में,

94 percent of households in Kenya,

कीन्या के ९४% घरों में

you will find soap.

आपकों साबुन मिलेगा।

Even in countries where soap is the lowest,

उन देशों में भी जहा साबुन की कमी है,

like Ethiopia, we are at 50 percent.

जैसे कि इथिओपिया मे हम ५०% पर है

So why is it?

तो ऐसा क्यू है?

Why aren't people washing their hands?

लोग अपने हाथ क्यू नहीं धो रहे है ?

Why is it that Mayank,

this young boy that I met in India,

एक छोटा बच्चा जिससे मॆ इन्डिया मे मिली थी,

isn't washing his hands?

अपने हाथ नहीं धोता है ?

Well, in Mayank's family,

क्यूकि मयन्क के परिवार में,

soap is used for bathing,

साबुन का उपयोग नहाने के लिये होता है,

soap is used for laundry,

साबुन का उपयोग कपड़े धोने के लिये होता है,

soap is used for washing dishes.

साबुन का उपयोग बर्तन धोने के लिये होता है।

His parents think sometimes

उसके माँ बाप सोचतें है कि

it's a precious commodity,

साबुन एक अनमोल पदार्थ है,

so they'll keep it in a cupboard.

तो साबुन को अल्मारी में बन्द रखतें है।

They'll keep it away from him so he doesn't waste it.

उससे दूर रखतें है ताकि वह उसे बर्बाद नहीं करें

On average, in Mayank's family,

औसत में, मयन्क के परिवार में,

they will use soap for washing hands

हाथों को साबुन से धोया जाता है

once a day

दिन में सिर्फ़ एक बार

at the very best, and sometimes

even once a week for washing hands with soap.

What's the result of that?

Children pick up disease

in the place that's supposed to love them

and protect them the most, in their homes.

Think about where you learned to wash your hands.

Did you learn to wash your hands at home?

I think behavioral scientists will tell you

that it's very difficult to change the habits

However, we all copy what everyone else does,

But it's been happening for centuries:

the solution is exactly the same:

It's about ensuring that they have access

to this bar of soap,

and that they're using it,

और वे उसका उपयोग करते है

because that's the number one way

to actually stop cholera from spreading.

I think this drive for profit

मुझे लगता है कि मुनाफ़े की दौड़

is extremely powerful,

sometimes more powerful than

the most committed charity or government.

Government is doing what they can,

सरकार जो कर सकती है कर रही है।

especially in terms of the pandemics

खासकर महामारी के मामले में

and epidemics such as cholera,

और कोलेरा जैसे व्यापक रोग से,

or Ebola at the moment,

या इस वक्त जैसे इबोला

but with competing priorities.

The budget is not always there.

हर समय बजट नहीं होता।

And when you think about this,

you think about what is required

to make handwashing a daily habit,

it requires sustained funding

to refine this behavior.

In short, those that fight for public health

जो लोग सार्वजनिक स्वास्थ्य के लिये लड़ते है

are actually dependent upon the soap companies

वे असल में साबुन की कंपनियों पर निर्भर है

to keep promoting handwashing with soap.

साबुन से हाथ धोने का संदेश फ़ैलाने के लिये।

We have friends like USAID,

हमारे पास उसैड जैसे मित्र है,

the Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap,

ग्लोबल पब्लिक-प्राइवेट संबन्ध हाथ धोने के लिये

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine,

लन्ड्न स्कूल ओफ़ हाइजीन और त्रोपिकल मेडिसिन,

Plan, WaterAid,

प्लान, वाटर ऐड,

that all believe

जो विश्वास करते है

for a win-win-win partnership.

एक जीत-जीत-जीत साझेदारी में।

Win for the public sector,

because we help them reach their targets.

Win for the private sector,

because we build new generations

of future handwashers.

And most importantly,

win for the most vulnerable.

On October 15,

we will celebrate Global Handwashing Day.

Schools, communities,

our friends in the public sector

and our friends in the private sector —

yes, on that day even our competitors,

we all join hands to celebrate

I think I'm probably one of the only women

in my country with this high degree in health,

with a doctorate in handwashing with soap.

Nine years ago, I decided,

We've reached over 183 million people

हम १८.३ करोड़ लोगों तक पहुच चुकें है

in 16 countries.

जो १६ देशों में है।

My team and I have the ambition

मेरे टीम और मेरी अभिलाशा है

to reach one billion by 2020.

कि साल २०२० तक ह्म १० करोड़ लोगों तक पहुचें।

Over the last four years,

पिछ्लें चार सालों में,

business has grown double digits,

whilst child mortality has reduced

in all the places where soap use has increased.

It may be uncomfortable for some to hear —

कुछ लोगों को यह सुन के अजीब लगा होगा -

business growth and lives saved

व्यापार और इन्सान की जान

somehow equated in the same sentence —

को एक ही पंक्ति में सुनना -

but it is that business growth

परंतु व्यापार की वृध्दि ही

that allows us to keep doing more.

हमें और करनें का मौका देती है।

Without it, and without talking about it,

बिना इसके, और बिना इसके बारें में बात किये,

we cannot achieve the change that we need.

जो बदलाव हमें चाहियें हम वो नहीं पा सकते ।

Last week, my team and I

पिछ्ले हफ्ते मैं और मेरी टीम

spent time visiting mothers

माँताओं से मिलें

that have all experienced the same thing:

जिन सब ने एक ही अनुभव किया है:

the death of a newborn.

एक नवजात शिशु की मौत।

I'm a mom. I can't imagine anything more powerful

मैं एक माँ हूँ। मैं इससे ज़्यादा शक्तिशाली

and more painful.

और दर्द्नाक कुछ कल्पना नहीं कर सकती।

This one is from Myanmar.

ये म्यानमार से हैं।

She had the most beautiful smile,

इसकी मुस्कुराहट बहुत प्यारी थी,

the smile, I think, that life gives you

ऐसी मुस्कुराहट जो आपको ज़िन्दगी देती है

when you've had a second chance.

जब आपको दूसरा मौका मिला हो।

Her son, Myo, is her second one.

इसका बेटा, म्यो, इसका दूसरा बेटा है।

She had a daughter

इसकी एक बेटी थी

who passed away at three weeks,

जो तीन हफ्ते की होकर गुज़र गयी,

and we know that the majority

और ह्म जानते है कि सबसे

of children that actually die

ज़्यादा बच्चों की मौत

die in the first month of their life,

उनके ज़िन्दगी के पहलें महीनें में ही होती है

and we know that if we give a bar of soap

और हम जानते है कि अगर हम एक साबुन की टिकियाँ

to every skilled birth attendant,

हर एक नर्स को दे,

and that if soap is used before touching the babies,

जो बच्चों को छूने से पह्लें साबुन का प्रयोग करें

we can reduce and make a change

हम बद्लाव ला सकते है और

in terms of those numbers.

इन नम्बरों को बदल सकते हैं।

And that's what inspires me,

और यहीं बात मुझे प्रेरणा देती है,

inspires me to continue in this mission,

प्रेरणा कि मै इस रास्ते पर चलूँ,

to know that I can equip her

यह जानना कि मै उसे वो दे सकती हूँ

with what's needed

जो उसे चहियें

so that she can do

ताकि वह दुनिया का सबसे

the most beautiful job in the world:

nurturing her newborn.

अपने नये बच्चें को पालना।

And next time you think of a gift
