We're going to share a lot of secrets today, you and I,

For me, the time I remember best

is when that stranger was a student of mine.

He came up to me after class that night

and his words confirmed what I already knew:

"I am so sorry, professor.

I wasn't a person to him until I was his professor.

This concept, called objectification,

is the foundation of sexism,

and we see it reinforced through every aspect of our lives.

We see it in the government

that refuses to punish men

for raping women.

We see it in advertisements.

اونو توی آگهی‌ها می‌بینیم.

How many of you have seen an advertisement

چند نفر شما اون آگهی رو دیدین

that uses a woman's breast to sell an entirely unrelated product?

که از سینه‌ی خانم‌ها برای فروش یه چیز بی‌ربط استفاده می‌کنه؟

Or movie after movie after movie

یا فیلم‌ها یکی بعد از دیگری

that portrays women as only love interests?

که زن‌ها رو فقط به عنوان معشوقه‌ی بالقوه نشون میدن؟

These examples might seem inconsequential and harmless,

این نمونه‌ها ممکنه بی‌ربط یا بی‌ضرر به نظر بیان.

but they're insidious,

ولی اونا خیلی موزیانه،

slowly building into a culture that refuses to see women as people.

به آرومی تو فرهنگ‌هایی که زن‌ها رو جزیی از مردم به حساب نمیارن جا می‌افتن.

We see this in the school that sends home a 10-year-old girl

ما اینو تو مدرسه‌ای می‌بینیم که یه دختر ۱۰ ساله رو فرستاد خونه

because her clothes were a distraction to boys trying to learn,

چونکه لباسش حواس پسرهایی که می‌خواستن یاد بگیرن رو پرت می‌کرد،

or the government that refuses to punish men for raping women

یا دولت‌هایی که از مجازات مردانی که به خانم‌ها تجاوز می‌کنن خودداری می‌کنن

over and over,

or the woman who is killed

because she asked a man to stop grinding on her on the dance floor.

Media plays a large role in perpetuating the objectification of women.

Let's consider the classic romantic comedy.

بذارین یه کمدی رمانتیک کلاسیک رو در نظر بگیریم.

We're typically introduced to two kinds of women in these movies,

ما معمولا با دو دسته خانم تو این نوع فیلم‌ها مواجه می‌شیم،

two kinds of desirable women, anyway.

دو دسته خانم خواستنی به هر حال.

The first is the sexy bombshell.

اولیش یه بمب سکسیه.

This is the unbelievably gorgeous woman with the perfect body.

یه خانمی که به طرز خارق‌العاده‌ای جذاب و خوش هیکله.

Our leading man has no trouble identifying her

هنرپیشه اصلی مرد ما مشکلی در شناسایی

and even less trouble having sex with her.

و حتی خوابیدن با اون خانم نداره.

The second is our leading lady,

دومیش هنرپیشه‌ی اصلی خانم ماست،

the beautiful but demure woman our leading man falls in love with

خانم زیبا و با وقاری که هنرپیشه اصلی مردمون عاشقش می‌شه

despite not noticing her at first

با اینکه اولش متوجه اون نشد

or not liking her if he did.

یا اگر هم شد ازش خوشش نیومد.

The first is the slut.

She is to be consumed and forgotten.

اون باید مصرف بشه و فراموش شه.

She is much too available.

اون زیادی در دسترسه.

The second is desirable but modest,

دومیه خواستنیه ولی با حیاست،

and therefore worthy of our leading man's future babies.

و برای همین لایق بچه‌های آینده‌ی مرد قصه‌ی ماست.

Marriage material.

کالای زناشویی.

We're actually told that women have two roles,

به ما گفتن که خانم‌ها دو تا نقش دارن،

but these two roles have a difficult time existing within the same woman.

ولی این دو تا نقش به سختی می‌تونه هم‌زمان تو یه خانم وجود داشته باشه.

On the rare occasion that I share with a new acquaintance

تو موقعیت‌های خیلی خاصی که به یه آشنای جدید می‌گم که

that I study sex,

من روابط جنسی رو مطالعه می‌کنم،

if they don't end the conversation right then,

اگه همون موقع بحث رو تموم نکنن،

they're usually pretty intrigued.

"Oh. Tell me more."

So I do.

"I'm really interested in studying the sexual behaviors

At this point I get a different kind of response.

Do pregnant people even have sex?

Have you thought about studying sexual desire

or orgasms?

That would be interesting, and sexy."

Tell me. What are the first words that come to mind

بهم بگین اولین کلماتی که به ذهن‌تون می‌رسه وقتی

when you picture a pregnant woman?

یه زن باردار رو تصور می‌کنین چی هستن؟

I asked this question in a survey of over 500 adults,

من این سوال رو تو یه نظرسنجی بین بیش از ۵۰۰ نفر بالغ پرسیدم.

and most responded with "belly" or "round"

و بیشترشون گفتن «شکم» یا «گرد»

and "cute."

و «با نمک.»

This didn't surprise me too much.

What else do we label as cute?

دیگه به چی می‌گیم بانمک؟

Babies. Puppies. Kittens.

بچه‌ها، عروسک‌ها، بچه‌گربه‌ها.

The elderly. Right?

سالمندان. درسته؟

When we label an adult as cute, though,

we take away a lot of their intelligence,

their complexity.

We reduce them to childlike qualities.

I also asked heterosexual men

to imagine a woman that they're partnered with is pregnant,

and then asked women to imagine that they are pregnant,

and then tell me the first words that come to mind

و اولین کلمه‌ای که به ذهنشون می‌رسه

when they imagine having sex.

Most of the responses were negative.

"Gross."

"Awkward."

"Not sexy." "Odd."

"Uncomfortable."

"How?"

"Not worth the trouble." "Not worth the risk."

That last one really stuck with me.

آخریش همیشه تو ذهنم موند.

We might think that because we divorce pregnant women and moms from sexuality,

ما شاید فکر می‌کنیم که با جدا کردن زنان باردار و مادران از تمایلات جنسی،

we are removing the constraints of sexual objectification.

داریم محدودیت‌های شیئ‌گرایی جنسی رو برمی‌داریم.

They experience less sexism. Right?

اونا کمتر تبعیض جنسی رو تجربه می‌کنن. بله؟

Not exactly.

نه دقیقا.

What happens instead is a different kind of objectification.

اتفاقی که می‌افته یه نوع دیگه‌ای از شیئ‌گراییه.

In my efforts to explain this to others,

one conversation led to the Venus of Willendorf,

یکی از گفتگوها به ونوسِ ویلندورف رسید،

a Paleolithic figurine scholars assumed was a goddess of love and beauty,

hence the name Venus.

This theory was later revised, though,

when scholars noted the sculptor's obvious focus

on the figurine's reproductive features:

I think this transition speaks more

about the scholars who have interpreted her purpose

than the actual purpose of the figurine herself.

When a woman becomes pregnant,

she leaves the realm of men's sexual desire

از قلمرو امیال جسی مرد خارج می‌شه

and slides into her reproductive and child-rearing role.

و وارد نقش تولید مثلی و پرورش کودکش می‌شه.

In doing so, she also becomes

همچنین در این فرآیند اون تبدیل به

the property of the community,

دارایی اجتماع می‌شه،

considered very important but only because she's pregnant. Right?

خیلی مهم در نظر گرفته می‌شه ولی فقط چون بارداره. درسته؟

I've taken to calling this the Willendorf effect,

من اسم این رو می‌ذارم اثر ویلندورف،

and once again we see it reinforced in many aspects of her life.

و یه بار دیگه می‌بینیم که این تو جنبه‌های مختلف زندگی اون تقویت شده.

Has anyone here ever been visibly pregnant?

اینجا کسی به صورت مریی باردار شده؟

Yeah. Lots of you, right?

So how many of you ever had a stranger touch your belly during pregnancy,

maybe without even asking your permission first?

شاید حتی بدون این‌که اول ازتون اجازه بگیره؟

Or told what you can and cannot eat

by somebody who is not your doctor, your medical care provider?

Or asked private questions about your birth plan?

And then told why those choices are all wrong?

و بعدش بهتون گفته شده همه‌ی اون تصمیمات اشتباه هستن؟

Yeah, me too.

آره، منم همین‌طور.

Or had a server refuse to bring you a glass of wine?

یا یه خدمتگذار که از آوردن یه لیوان شراب براتون خودداری کرده باشه؟

This one might give you pause, I know, but stay with me.

این شاید باعث شه درنگ کنید، می‌دونم، ولی با من باشید.

This is a huge secret.

این یه راز بزرگه.

It is actually safe to drink in moderation during pregnancy.

نوشیدن مشروب به اندازه‌ی اعتدال در زمان بارداری ایمنه.

Many of us don't know this

خیلی از ماها این رو نمی‌دونیم

because doctors don't trust pregnant women with this secret --

برای اینکه پزشک‌ها به خانم‌های باردار برای گفتن این راز اعتماد ندارن --

especially if she's less educated or a woman of color.

What this tells us is,

this Willendorf effect, it's also classist and racist.

It's present when the government reminds women

with every new anti-choice bill

لایحه‌ی ضد انتخاب یاد خانم‌ها می‌ندازن

that the contents of her uterus are not her own,

or when an ob-gyn says,

"While it's safe to have sex during pregnancy,

sometimes you never know.

Better safe than sorry, right?"

She's denied basic privacy and bodily autonomy

اون از حریم اولیه‌ی خصوصی و استقلال جسمی محروم می‌شه

under the guise of "be a good mother."

زیر پوشش «مادر خوبی باش.»

We don't trust her to make her own decisions.

ما بهش اعتماد نداریم که خودش تصمیم بگیره.

She's cute, remember?

اون بانمکه، یادتونه؟

When we tell women

وقتی ما به زنان می‌گیم

that sexual pleasure -- excuse me.

که لذت جنسی -- ببخشید.

When we tell women that sex isn't worth the risk during pregnancy,

وقتی به خانم‌ها می‌گیم که رابطه‌ی جنسی در زمان بارداری ارزش خطر کردن نداره،

what we're telling her is that her sexual pleasure doesn't matter.

چیزی که داریم می‌گیم اینه که لذت جنسیش مهم نیست.

So what we are telling her is that she in fact doesn't matter,

پس چیزی که بهش می‌گیم اینه که خودش مهم نیست.

even though the needs of her fetus are not at odds with her own needs.

حتی اگر نیازهای جنین در تضاد با نیازهای خودش نباشن.

So medical providers,

پس تامین‌کنندگان خدمات بهداشتی و درمانی،

such as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists

مثل دانشکده‌ی زنان و زایمان آمریکا

have the opportunity to educate about the safety of sex during pregnancy.

فرصت دارند تا درباره ایمن بودن رابطه‌ی جنسی در زمان بارداری آموزش دهند.

So what do the experts say?

خوب متخصصین چی می‌گن؟

ACOG actually has no public official statement

کنگره زنان و زایمان آمریکا بیانیه‌ی رسمی عمومی

about the safety of sex during pregnancy.

درباره ایمن بودن رابطه‌ی جنسی زمان بارداری نداره.

Guidance from the Mayo Clinic is generally positive

راهنمای کلینیک مایو بطور کلی مفیده

but presented with a caveat:

ولی یه اخطار داره:

"Although most women can safely have sex throughout pregnancy,

«اگرچه بیشتر زنان زمان بارداری می‌توانند رابطه‌ی جنسی داشته باشند،

sometimes it's best to be cautious."

گاهی بهتر است مراقب بود.»

Some women don't want to have sex during pregnancy,

بعضی خانم‌ها نمی‌خوان در زمان بارداری رابطه‌ی جنسی داشته باشن،

and that's OK.

و این مشکلی نداره.

Some women do want to have sex during pregnancy,

بعضی‌ها می‌خوان در زمان بارداری رابطه‌ی جنسی داشته باشن،

and that's OK, too.

اینم مشکلی نداره.

What needs to stop is society telling women

چیزی که باید متوقف شه اینه که جامعه به زنان بگه که

what they can and cannot do with their bodies.

با بدن‌شون چه کاری می‌تونن و نمی‌تونن انجام بدن.

Pregnant women are not faceless, identity-less vessels of reproduction

زنان باردار ابزار تولید مثلِ فاقد شخصیت و هویت نیستن

who can't stand on their own two feet.

که نتونن روی دو پاشون بایستن.

But the truth is, the real secret is,

حقیقت اینه که، راز واقعی اینه که،

we tell all women that their sexual pleasure doesn't matter.

ما به همه‌ی زنان می‌گیم لذت جنسی‌شون اهمیتی نداره.

We refuse to even acknowledge that women who have sex with women

حتی حاضر نیستیم بپذیریم که زنانی که با زنان دیگه رابطه‌ی جنسی دارن

or women who don't want children even exist.

یا زنانی که بچه نمی‌خوان اصلا وجود دارن.

"Oh, it's just a phase ...

«خیلی خوب، این فقط یه مرحله‌س ...

she just needs the right man to come along."

فقط نیاز به یه مرد مناسب داره تا بیاد سراغش.»

Every time a woman has sex

هر زمان که زنی به‌خاطر لذت

simply because it feels good,

رابطه‌ی جنسی برقرار می‌کنه،

it is revolutionary.

آشوب‌طلبانه‌ به حساب میاد.

She is revolutionary.

اون آشوب‌طلبه.

She is pushing back against society's insistence

او داره پافشاری جامعه رو پس می‌زنه مبنی بر این‌که

that she exist simply for men's pleasure

به‌سادگی به‌خاطر لذت مردان وجود داره

or for reproduction.

A woman who prioritizes her sexual needs is scary,

because a woman who prioritizes her sexual needs prioritizes herself.

That is a woman demanding that she be treated as an equal.

and that is the most terrifying of all

I am the mother of two boys

Even though my boys hear me say regularly

that it's important for men to recognize women as equals

and they see their father modeling this,

we need what happens in the world to reinforce what happens in our home.

This is not a men's problem or a women's problem.

This is everyone's problem,

and we all play a role in dismantling systems of inequality.

For starters, we have got to stop telling women

برای شروع، لازمه به زن‌ها نگیم

what they can and cannot do with their bodies.

که با بدنشون چه کارهایی می‌تونن یا نمی‌تونن بکنن.

This includes not treating pregnant women like community property.

این شامل این قضیه می‌شه که با زنان باردار مثل دارایی اجتماع برخورد نکنیم.

If you don't know her, don't even ask to touch her belly.

اگر شما نمی‌شناسیدش، حتی ازش نخواید که شکمش رو لمس کنید.

You wouldn't anybody else.

شما نکنین، هیچ‌کس نمی‌کنه.

Don't tell her what she can and cannot eat.

بهش نگین چی می‌تونه بخوره و چی نمی‌تونه.

Don't ask her private details about her medical decisions.

در مورد تصمیمات شخصیِ پزشکیش سوال نپرسین.

This also includes understanding

همچنین بفهمین که

that even if you are personally against abortion,

حتی اگه خودتون شخصا مخالف سقط جنین هستین،

you can still fight for a woman's right to choose.

می‌تونین برای حق انتخاب زنان بجنگین.

When it comes to women's equality, the two need not oppose one another.

وقتی پای برابری زنان در میانه، این دو تا در ضدیت هم نیستن.

If you're somebody who has sex with women,

اگه کسی هستین که با زنان رابطه‌ی جنسی دارین،

prioritize her pleasure.

لذت جنسی اونو تو اولیت بذارین.

If you don't know how, ask.

اگه بلد نیستین، بپرسین.

If you have children --

اگه بچه دارین --

have conversations about sex as early as possible,

because kids don't look up s-e-x in the dictionary anymore.

They look it up on the internet.

And when you're having those conversations about sex,

don't center them on reproduction only.

People have sex for many reasons,

some because they want a baby,

but most of us have sex because it feels good.

Admit it.

And regardless of whether you have children or not,

support comprehensive sex education that doesn't shame our teenagers.

Nothing positive comes from shaming teens
