When I think about dreams,

وقتی به رؤیا فکر میکنم،

like many of you,

I think about this picture.

این تصویر به ذهنم میاد.

I was eight when I watched Neil Armstrong

هشت سالم بود وقتی نیل آمسترانگ رو دیدم که

step off the Lunar Module onto the surface of the Moon.

از آپولو پیاده شد و قدم روی کره ماه گذاشت.

I had never seen anything like it before,

قبل از اون چنین چیزی ندیده بودم،

and I've never seen anything like it since.

ودیگر هم چنین چیزی ندیدم

We got to the Moon for one simple reason:

انسان برای یک دلیل ساده قدم در ماه گذاشت:

John Kennedy committed us to a deadline.

جان کندی برامون یه ضرب الاجل تعیین کرد.

And in the absence of that deadline,

و اگر اون ضرب الاجل نبود

we would still be dreaming about it.

Leonard Bernstein said two things are necessary for great achievement:

Deadlines and commitments

are the great and fading lessons of Apollo.

And they are what give the word "moonshot" its meaning.

And our world is in desperate need of political leaders

و دنیای ما نیازشدیدی به رهبران سیاسی داره که

willing to set bold deadlines

for the achievement of daring dreams on the scale of Apollo again.

When I think about dreams,

I think about the drag queens of LA and Stonewall

and millions of other people risking everything

to come out when that was really dangerous,

It is a picture that in my wildest dreams I could never have imagined

این تصویری است که در اوج رؤیاهام نمینونستم در ذهنم بسازم

when I was 18

and figuring out that I was gay

و اینکه فهمیدم همجنسگرا هستم

and feeling estranged from my country

و بخاطر آن حس می کردم از کشورم

and my dreams because of it.

I think about this picture of my family

that I never dreamed I could ever have --

and of our children holding this headline

I never dreamed could ever be printed about the Supreme Court ruling.

We need more of the courage of drag queens and astronauts.

But I want to talk about the need for us to dream

حرف من درباره نیاز ما به داشتن رؤیاست

in more than one dimension,

because there was something about Apollo that I didn't know when I was 8,

and something about organizing that the rainbow colors over.

Of the 30 astronauts in the original Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs,

only seven marriages survived.

Those iconic images of the astronauts bouncing on the Moon

obscure the alcoholism and depression on Earth.

Thomas Merton, the Trappist monk,

asked during the time of Apollo,

"What can we gain by sailing to the moon

"با رفتن به ماه چه کار می تونیم بکنیم،

if we are not able to cross the abyss that separates us from ourselves?"

اگر قادر نباشیم از پرتگاه هایی که بین ما و اصل ما فاصله انداخته عبور کنیم؟"

And what can we gain by the right to marry

از حق ازدواج چی عایدمون میشه

if we are not able to cross the acrimony

اگر نتونیم بگذریم ازخشونت

and emotional distance that so often separates us from our love?

و فاصله عاطفی که غالباً ما رو از عشقمون جدا میکنه؟

And not just in marriage.

مسئله فقط ازدواج نیست.

I have seen the most hurtful, destructive,

دیدم که مضرترین و نابودکننده ترین

tragic infighting in LGBT and AIDS

جنگ های داخلی غم انگیز برای حامیان همجنسگرایی و ایدز

and breast cancer and non-profit activism,

و سرطان سینه و فعالیت های خیر خواهانه،

all in the name of love.

Thomas Merton also wrote about wars among saints

and that "there is a pervasive form of contemporary violence

to which the idealist most easily succumbs:

که ایدئالیسم به راحتی تسلیمش میشه یعنی:

activism and overwork.

عمل گرایی و کار زیادی.

The frenzy of our activism neutralizes our work for peace.

جنون ما برای کار زیاد تلاشمون رو برای صلح خنثی میکنه.

It destroys our own inner capacity for peace."

این جنون استعداد درونی مارو برای صلح از بین میبره.

Too often our dreams become these compartmentalized fixations

خیلی وقتا رؤیاهامون تبدیل میشن به تمرکز روی اجزاء خرد

on some future

برای آینده واهی

that destroy our ability to be present for our lives right now.

که زندگی موجود ما رو نابود میکنه.

Our dreams of a better life for some future humanity

رؤیاهامون برای زندگی بهتر برای انسانیت در آینده

or some other humanity in another country

یا برای انسانیت در کشور دیگر

alienate us from the beautiful human beings sitting next to us

ما را با انسان های زیبایی که کنارمون نشستن غریبه مینکه

at this very moment.

درست همین الان.

Well, that's just the price of progress, we say.

خب، میگیم این هزینه پیشرفته.

You can go to the Moon

شما یا میتونید برید ماه

or you can have stability in your family life.

یا در زندگی خانوادگیتون ثبات داشته باشید.

And we can't conceive of dreaming in both dimensions at the same time.

نمیتونیم در آن واحد این دو رؤیا رو داشته باشیم.

And we don't set the bar much higher than stability

و هیچی چیزی بالاتر از ثبات نیست

when it comes to our emotional life.

وقتی موضوع زندگی عاطفی پیش میاد.

Which is why our technology for talking to one another

به همین خاطره که فناوری ما برای صحیت با همدیگه

has gone vertical,

پیشرفت کرده

our ability to listen and understand one another

ولی توانایی مون برای گوش کردن و درک همدیگه

has gone nowhere.

سراز ناکجا آباد درآورده.

Our access to information is through the roof,

دسترسی ما به اطلاعات سر به فلک کشیده

our access to joy, grounded.

اما دسترسی به لذت خیلی خیلی کمه.

But this idea, that our present and our future are mutually exclusive,

اما این عقیده که حال و آینده ما هر دو مهم هستن

that to fulfill our potential for doing we have to surrender

و برای شکوفایی توانایی های بالقومون باید آنها را

our profound potential for being,

صرف بقای خود بکنیم،

that the number of transistors on a circuit can be doubled and doubled,

و اینکه تعداد ترانزیستورهای یه مدار همچنان میتونن زیاد و زیادتر بشن،

but our capacity for compassion and humanity and serenity and love

اما ظرفیت ما برای شفقت، انسانیت، آرامش وعشق

is somehow limited

is a false and suffocating choice.

همه این ها گزینه های غلط و خفه کننده هستن.

Now, I'm not suggesting

اما در این لحظه نمیخام پیشنهاد

simply the uninspiring idea of more work-life balance.

کلیشه ای تعادل بین کار و زندگی رو بدهم.

What good is it for me to spend more time with my kids at home

چه فایده ای داره وقتی توخونه زمان بیشتری رو با بچه هام بگذرونم

if my mind is always somewhere else while I'm doing it?

ولی فکرم جای دیگه ای باشه؟

I'm not even talking about mindfulness.

حتی منظورم تمرکز حواس هم نیست.

Mindfulness is all of a sudden becoming a tool for improving productivity.

تمرکز حواس یهویی تبدیل به وسیله ای میشه برای افزایش تولید.

Right?

درسته؟

I'm talking about dreaming

دارم درباره رؤیاپردازی حرف میزنم

as boldly in the dimension of our being

رویا پردازی در خور خودمان

as we do about industry and technology.

به همون بزرگی صنعت و تکنولوژی.

I'm talking about an audacious authenticity

دارم درباره هویت گستاخانه حرف میزنم

that allows us to cry with one another,

که بهمون اجاز میده با هم گریه کنیم،

a heroic humility that allows us to remove our masks and be real.

یک فروتنی قهرمانانه که بذاره نقاب از چهرهامون برداریم و خومون باشم.

It is our inability to be with one another,

توانایی این رو نداریم که با هم باشیم،

our fear of crying with one another, that gives rise to so many

میترسیم با هم گریه کنیم که این مسئله منجر میشه به خیلی از

of the problems we are frantically trying to solve in the first place,

from Congressional gridlock to economic inhumanity.

I'm talking about what Jonas Salk called an Epoch B,

a new epoch in which we become as excited about and curious about

and scientific about the development of our humanity

ومشتاق علم و پیشرفت انسانیتمون می شیم،

as we are about the development of our technology.

به همون اندازه که برای پیشرفت فناوری اشتیاق داریم.

We should not shrink from this opportunity

نباید این فرصت رو از دست بدیم

simply because we don't really understand it.

چراکه واقعاً به اهمیتش پی نبردیم.

There was a time when we didn't understand space.

زمانی بود که ما مفهوم فضا رو درک نمیکردیم.

Or because we're more used to technology and activism.

شاید به این علت که بیشتر به فناوری و عمل گرایی متمایل بودیم.

That is the very definition of being stuck in a comfort zone.

این همون معنیه واقعیه چسبیدن به حاشیه امنه.

We are now very comfortable imagining unimaginable technological achievement.

امروز وقتی درباره چیزهای نشدنی در فناوری رؤیا پردازی میکنیم، احساس خوبی داریم.

In 2016, it is the dimension of our being itself

در سال ۲۰۱۶، این امر یکی از ابعاد وجودی ما میشه،

that cries out for its fair share of our imagination.

که در خیال ما به دنبال جایی میگرده که بهش تعلق داره.

Now, we're all here to dream,

ما هممون اومدیم تا رؤیاپردازی کنیم،

but maybe if we're honest about it,

اما صادق که باشیم،

each of us chasing our own dream.

هر کدوم از ما دنبال رؤیاهای خودمونیم.

You know, looking at the name tags to see who can help me with my dream,

میدونید، به اسامی هم نگاه میکنیم تا ببینیم کی میتونه مارو به رؤیاهاون برسونه،

sometimes looking right through one another's humanity.

بعضی وقتا دقیقاً داریم به انسانیت هم نگاه میکنیم.

I can't be bothered with you right now. I have an idea for saving the world.

نمیخوام اذیتتون کنم. برای نجات دنیا یه ایده دارم.

Right?

Years ago, once upon a time, I had this beautiful company

سال ها قبل یه وقتی یه شرکت خیلی خوب داشتم

that created these long journeys for heroic civic engagement.

که برای مشارکت مدنی قهرمانانه سفرهای طولانی تدارک میدیدیم.

And we had this mantra:

واین سرود رو میخواندیم:

"Human. Kind. Be Both."

"انسان باش. مهربان باش. هردوباش."

And we encouraged people to experiment outrageously with kindness.

مردم رو تشویق میکردیم مهربونی را شدیداً تجربه کنن.

Like, "Go help everybody set up their tents."

مثلاً به آنها میگفتیم" برید کمک کنید بقیه چادرشونو بزنن."

And there were a lot of tents.

البته خیلی هم چادر اونجا بود.

"Go buy everybody Popsicles."

یا " برو برای بقیه بستنی یخی بخر."

"Go help people fix their flat tires

یا " برو کمک کن پنچری ماشینشونو بگیرن."

even though you know the dinner line is going to get longer."

با اینکه میدونستن صف شام طولانی تر میشه.

And people really took us up on this,

افراد واقعاً همکاری میکردن،

so much so that if you got a flat tire on the AIDS ride,

اکثر اوقات پنچریهای سفرهای کمک به ایدز اینجوری بود

you had trouble fixing it, because there were so many people there asking you

و از کثرت افراد طالب کمک گرفتن پنچری مشکل می شد

if you needed help.

اگر شما کمک می خواستید.

For a few days, for tens of thousands of people,

در مدت جند روز، برای ده ها هزار نفر،

we created these worlds

دنیاهایی این چنینی خلق کردیم

that everybody said were the way they wish the world could always be.

همه میگفتن همیشه آرزو داشتن دنیا این شکلی باشه.

What if we experimented with creating that kind of world

چی میشد اگه چنین دنیایی رو تجربه میکردیم

these next few days?

همین چند روز آینده؟

And instead of going up to someone and asking them, "What do you do?"

و به جای اینکه بریم از یه نفر بپرسیم، " چه کاره ای؟"

ask them, "So what are your dreams?"

ازش بپرسیم، "چه رؤیاهایی داری؟"

or "What are your broken dreams?"

یا اینکه "چه رؤیاهای نافرجامی داری؟"

You know, "TED." Tend to Each other's Dreams.

شما با TED آشنا هستید. که به رویاهای همه بال و پر میده.

Maybe it's "I want to stay sober"

شاید یه عده بگن "من میخام عاقل باشم."

or "I want to build a tree house with my kid."

یا اینکه "میخام با بچه م یه کلبه درختی بسازم."

You know, instead of going up to the person everybody wants to meet,

به جای رفتن پیش کسی که همه میخان ملاقاتش کنن،

go up to the person who is all alone

برید پیش کسی که خیلی تنهاست

and ask them if they want to grab a cup of coffee.

و ازش بپرسید یه فنجان قهوه میل داره.

I think what we fear most

به نظرم بیشترین ترس ما ازاین است

is that we will be denied the opportunity to fulfill our true potential,

که ما از داشتن فرصت برای محقق کردن پتانسیل هامون محروم شدیم،

that we are born to dream

از اینکه برای رؤیاپردازی به دنیا اومدیم

and we might die without ever having the chance.

و شاید بمیریم و این فرصت رو از دست بدیم.

Imagine living in a world

زندگی در دنیایی رو تصور کنید

where we simply recognize that deep, existential fear in one another

که اون ترس عمیق در وجود هر کسی رو بفهمیم

and love one another boldly because we know

و شدیداً همدیگرو دوست داشته باشیم چون میدونیم که

that to be human is to live with that fear.

انسان بودن یعنی زندگی با وجود اون ترس.

It's time for us to dream in multiple dimensions simultaneously,

وقتش رسیده که همزمان در ابعاد مختلف رؤیاپردازی کنیم،

and somewhere that transcends all of the wondrous things

جایی که فراتر از همه عجایب دنیاست

we can and will and must do

فراتر از همه کارهایی که میتونیم و باید بکنیم

lies the domain of all the unbelievable things we could be.

جایی که حیطه تمامی کارهای غیر قابل باوریه که میتونیم انجامشون بدیم.

It's time we set foot into that dimension

وقتش رسیده که قدم در بعد جدید بذاریم

and came out about the fact that we have dreams there, too.

و به این حقیقت برسیم که ما هم رؤیایی داریم.

If the Moon could dream,

اگر ماه بتونه رؤیاپردازی کنه

I think that would be its dream for us.

من فکر میکنم تو رؤیاش ما رو در سر داره.

It's an honor to be with you.
