How Syria's architecture laid the foundation for brutal war | Marwa Al-Sabouni

Hi. My name is Marwa, and I'm an architect.

سلام. اسم من مروه است و آرشیتکت هستم.

I was born and raised in Homs,

در شهر حُمص به دنیا اومدم و بزرگ شدم،

a city in the central western part of Syria,

شهری در مرکز غربیِ سوریه،

and I've always lived here.

و من همیشه همینجا زندگی کرده ام.

After six years of war,

بعد از شش سال جنگ،

Homs is now a half-destroyed city.

حُمص الان یه شهرِ نیمه ویرانه.

My family and I were lucky; our place is still standing.

من و خانواده م خیلی خوش شانس بودیم که خونمون هنوز سر جاشه.

Although for two years, we were like prisoners at home.

اگر چه برای دو سال مثل زندانیا توی خونه حبس بودیم.

Outside there were demonstrations and battles and bombings and snipers.

اون بیرون پُر از تظاهرات و درگیری و بمبارون و تک تیرانداز بود.

My husband and I used to run an architecture studio

من و همسرم یه استودیوی معماری داشتیم

in the old town main square.

تو میدان اصلیِ محله قدیمیِ شهر.

It's gone, as is most of the old town itself.

الان دیگه اون هم، مثل بقیه محله ی قدیمیِ شهر از بین رفته.

Half of the city's other neighborhoods

نیمی از بقیه ی محله های شهر هم،

are now rubble.

الان خرابه ان.

Since the ceasefire in late 2015,

از زمان آتش بس اواخر سال ۲۰۱۵،

large parts of Homs have been more or less quiet.

بیشتر جاهای شهر کم و بیش آرومن.

The economy is completely broken, and people are still fighting.

اقتصاد کاملا از بین رفته و مردم هنوز در حال جنگن.

The merchants who had stalls in the old city market

کاسبهایی که حُجره ای در بازار قدیمیِ شهر داشتن

now trade out of sheds on the streets.

الان زیر یه سایبون وسط خیابون کاسبی میکنن.

Under our apartment, there is a carpenter,

زیر آپارتمان ما یه نجاری هست،

sweetshops, a butcher, a printing house, workshops, among many more.

شیرینی فروشی و یه قصابی و یه چاپ خونه، کارگاه ها و الی آخر.

I have started teaching part-time,

من شروع کرده ام به تدریس پاره وقت.

and with my husband, who juggles several jobs,

و با شوهرم که چند تا شغل با هم داره،

we've opened a small bookshop.

یه کتاب فروشیِ کوچیک باز کردیم.

Other people do all sorts of jobs to get by.

بقیه ی مردم هم، همه جور کار برای گذران زندگی می کنن.

When I look at my destroyed city, of course, I ask myself:

البته، وقتی به شهر نابود شده‌ام نگاه می کنم، از خودم می پرسم:

What has led to this senseless war?

چی منجر به این جنگ بی معنی شد؟

Syria was largely a place of tolerance,

در بیشتر سوریه مردم همدیگر رو تحمل می‌کردند،

historically accustomed to variety,

در طول تاریخ به تنوع عادت کرده بودند،

accommodating a wide range of beliefs, origins, customs,

با طیف وسیعی از اعتقادات، نژادها و هویت‌ها و رسم و رسوم،

goods, food.

و غذاها و کالاها وفق پیدا کرده بودند.

How did my country --

چگونه کشورم --

a country with communities living harmoniously together

کشوری که در اون همه، در هماهنگی با هم زندگی می کردند،

and comfortable in discussing their differences --

و در آرامش اختلافاتشون رو حل می کردن --

how did it degenerate into civil war, violence, displacement

چگونه این کشور، رو به انحطاطِ جنگ داخلی و خشونت و آوارگی

and unprecedented sectarian hatred?

و یک تنفر بی سابقه ی قومی گذاشت؟

There were many reasons that had led to the war --

عوامل زیادی منجر به این جنگ شد --

social, political and economic.

اجتماعی، سیاسی و اقتصادی.

They all have played their role.

هر کدام نقش خودشون رو بازی کردن.

But I believe there is one key reason that has been overlooked

ولی من بر این باورم که یک دلیل کلیدی از قلم افتاده

and which is important to analyze,

که خیلی هم تحلیلش مهمه،

because from it will largely depend

چرا که به شدت تاثیر میذاره،

whether we can make sure that this doesn't happen again.

تا اینکه مطمئن بشیم دوباره این اتفاق نیفته.

And that reason is architecture.

و اون دلیل، معماریه.

Architecture in my country has played an important role

معماری در کشور من نقش مهمی داشته

in creating, directing and amplifying conflict between warring factions,

در خلق و هدایت و تشدید درگیریهای بین احزاب این جنگ،

and this is probably true for other countries as well.

و احتمالا در مورد کشورهای دیکه هم صدق میکنه.

There is a sure correspondence between the architecture of a place

ارتباط غیر قابل انکاری بین معماری یک محل

and the character of the community that has settled there.

و شخصیت اجتماعی که در ان محل سکنی گزیده وجود داره.

Architecture plays a key role in whether a community crumbles

معماری نقش عمده ای در فروپاشی یک جامعه،

or comes together.

و یا اتصال آن با هم دارد.

Syrian society has long lived the coexistence

جامعه ی سوریه مدتها با همزیستی

of different traditions and backgrounds.

آداب و سنن مختلف زندگی کرده.

Syrians have experienced the prosperity of open trade

سوری ها تجربه ی برکت تجارت آزاد

and sustainable communities.

و جوامع پایدار را دارند.

They have enjoyed the true meaning of belonging to a place,

آنها معنای واقعی متعلق بودن به یک مکان را با لذت لمس کرده اند،

and that was reflected in their built environment,

و تمام اینها در فضای ساخت و سازشان نمایان بود،

in the mosques and churches built back-to-back,

در مساجد و کلیساهایی که پشت به پشت بنا شده بودند،

in the interwoven souks and public venues,

در بازارهای تو در تو و اماکن عمومی،

and the proportions and sizes based on principles of humanity and harmony.

و تمام ابعاد و اندازه ها بر اساس قوانین انسانیت و توازن بود.

This architecture of mixity can still be read in the remains.

هنور هم این معماری تلفیقی در خرابه ها قابل رویت است.

The old Islamic city in Syria was built over a multilayered past,

شهر قدیمی اسلامی در سوریه بر گذشته ای چند لایه بنا شده بود،

integrating with it and embracing its spirit.

و با آن یکی شده بود و روحش را

So did its communities.

همراه با جوامعش، در آغوش کشیده بود.

People lived and worked with each other

مردم با هم کار و زندگی می کردند

in a place that gave them a sense of belonging

در جایی که احساس میکردن بهش تعلق دارن

and made them feel at home.

جایی که مثل خانه بود.

They shared a remarkably unified existence.

همگی یک وجود واحد رو با هم تقسیم کرده بودن.

But over the last century,

ولی در طول قرن اخیر،

gradually this delicate balance of these places has been interfered with;

رفته رفته این تعادل ظریف دستکاری شد؛

first, by the urban planners of the colonial period,

اول توسط طراحان شهریِ دوران استعمار،

when the French went enthusiastically about,

زمانی که فرانسوی ها، مشتاقانه می گشتند و

transforming what they saw as the un-modern Syrian cities.

هر آنچه به قول خودشان یک شهرِ نا-مدرنِ سوریه بود را متحول می کردند.

They blew up city streets and relocated monuments.

خیابان های شهر را منفجر و مجسمه ها را جا به جا می کردند.

They called them improvements,

اسمش را گذاشته بودند پیشرفت،

and they were the beginning of a long, slow unraveling.

و آنها آغاز یک ازهم گسیختگیِ آهسته و طولانی بودند.

The traditional urbanism and architecture of our cities

شهرسازی سنتی و معماریِ شهرهای ما

assured identity and belonging not by separation,

هویت و تعلق را نه با جدا سازی،

but by intertwining.

بلکه با بافت درهمش تآمین می کرد.

But over time, the ancient became worthless, and the new, coveted.

ولی در طول زمان، دیرینگی بی ارزش و نوگرایی باب میل شد.

The harmony of the built environment and social environment

توازن فضاهای ساخت و ساز و اماکن اجتماعی

got trampled over by elements of modernity --

زیر عناصر مدرنیته لگدمال شدند--

brutal, unfinished concrete blocks,

بلوکهای ناتمام و وحشتناکِ بتونی،

neglect, aesthetic devastation,

غفلت، و انهدام زیبایی،

divisive urbanism that zoned communities by class, creed or affluence.

یک شهرنشینیِ تکه تکه که اجتماع را بر اساس طبقه، قوم یا دارایی منطقه بندی کرده.

And the same was happening to the community.

اتفاقی که برای جامعه هم افتاد.

As the shape of the built environment changed,

همین که شکل محیط ساخت و ساز تغییر کرد،

so the lifestyles and sense of belonging of the communities

روش زندگی مردم و و حس تعلق خاطرشان به جامعه نیز

also started changing.

شروع به تغییر کرد.

From a register of togetherness, of belonging,

از یک ثباتِ باهم بودن، تعلق،

architecture became a way of differentiation,

معماری تبدیل به یک جدا کننده شد،

and communities started drifting apart

و جوامع فاصله گرفتند

from the very fabric that used to unite them,

درست از همان بافتی که متحدشان کرده بود،

and from the soul of the place that used to represent their common existence.

و از روحِ همان محلی که نماینده وجود مشترکشان بود.

While many reasons had led to the Syrian war,

در حالی که عوامل زیادی منجر به جنگ سوریه شدند،

we shouldn't underestimate the way in which,

این مسیر نباید دست کم گرفته شود،

by contributing to the loss of identity and self-respect,

که با دامن زدن به هویت و عزت نفس از دست رفته،

urban zoning and misguided, inhumane architecture

منطقه بندی شهری و معماریِ غیر-انسانی و گمراه

have nurtured sectarian divisions and hatred.

چگونه نفرت و بخش بندیِ قبیله ای را گسترش داد.

Over time, the united city has morphed into a city center

در گذر زمان، آن شهر متحد مبدل به یک مرکز شهر شد

with ghettos along its circumference.

با خرابه نشین هایی دورتا دورش

And in turn, the coherent communities became distinct social groups,

و از آن طرف، جوامع اصیل شدند گروههای اجتماعی متمایز،

alienated from each other and alienated from the place.

غریبه با هم و غریبه با محل.

From my point of view,

از دید من،

losing the sense of belonging to a place

از دست دادن حس تعلق خاطر به یک مکان

and a sense of sharing it with someone else

و حس تقسیم کردنش با دیگری

has made it a lot easier to destroy.

کار را برای تخریب خیلی راحت تر کرد.

The clear example can be seen in the informal housing system,

مثال خیلی واضحش رو میتونیم در سیستم خانه سازی غیر رسمی ببینیم،

which used to host, before the war, over 40 percent of the population.

که قبل از جنگ، چهل درصد جمعیت رو پوشش می داد.

Yes, prior to the war, almost half of the Syrian population

درسته، قبل از جنگ، تقریبا نیمی از جمعیت سوریه

lived in slums,

در زاغه ها زندگی می کردند،

peripheral areas without proper infrastructure,

محله هایی پراکنده بدون زیر ساخت های لازم،

made of endless rows of bare block boxes

ساخته شده از ردیف بی پایانی از بلوکهای لخت

containing people,

که مردم رو توخودشون جا می دادن،

people who mostly belonged to the same group,

مردمی که بیشتر متعلق به یک گروه بودن،

whether based on religion, class, origin or all of the above.

چه بر اساس مذهب، طبقه اجتماعی، اصالت یا همه اینها.

This ghettoized urbanism proved to be a tangible precursor of war.

این شهر نشینی خرابه ای، ثابت شد که عامل محسوسی در ایجاد جنگ بود.

Conflict is much easier between pre-categorized areas --

درگیری خیلی راحت تر شکل میگیره، بین مناطقی که از قبل دسته بندی شدن--

where the "others" live.

جایی که "دیگران" زندگی می‌کنند.

The ties that used to bind the city together --

رشته هایی که شهر رو متصل به هم نگه میداشت--

whether they were social, through coherent building,

چه اجتماعی، در یک ساختمان،

or economic, through trade in the souk,

یا اقتصادی، از طریق معاملات بازار،

or religious, through the coexistent presence --

یا مذهبی، از طریق همزیستی شان--

were all lost in the misguided and visionless modernization

همه در مدرن سازی بی هدف و گمراهِ

of the built environment.

ساختمانها گم شدن.

Allow me an aside.

اجازه بدین موضوعی رو بگم.

When I read about heterogeneous urbanism in other parts of the world,

وقتی در مورد شهر نشینی ناهمگون در جاهای دیگه ی دنیا می خونم،

involving ethnic neighborhoods in British cities

مثل محله های نژادی و قومی در شهرهای بریتانیا

or around Paris or Brussels,

یا اطراف پاریس و بروکسل،

I recognize the beginning of the kind of instability

متوجه آغاز یک نوع بی ثباتی میشم

we have witnessed so disastrously here in Syria.

از همونی که در سوریه به طرز مصیبت باری شاهدش بودیم.

We have severely destroyed cities,

ما بد جوری شهرها رو نابود کردیم،

such as Homs, Aleppo, Daraa and many others,

مثل حُمص، حلب، دَرعا و شهرهای دیگه،

and almost half of the population of the country is now displaced.

و تقریبا نیمی از جمعیت کشور بی خانمان شدن.

Hopefully, the war will end,

امیدوارم که جنگ به پایان برسد،

and the question that, as an architect, I have to ask, is:

و سوالی که منِ آرشیتکت، باید بپرسم، اینه:

How do we rebuild?

چگونه باز سازی کنیم؟

What are the principles that we should adopt

قواعدی که این بار باید ازشون پیروی کنیم

in order to avoid repeating the same mistakes?

که جلوی تکرار همان اشتباه را بگیریم چیا هستن؟

From my point of view, the main focus should be on creating places

از دید من، تمرکز اصلی باید روی ایجاد اماکنی باشه

that make their people feel they belong.

که به مردمش حس تعلق بده

Architecture and planning need to recapture

معماری و طراحی باید

some of the traditional values that did just that,

بعضی از ارزشهای سنتی رو باز پس بگیرن،

creating the conditions for coexistence and peace,

شرایطی به وجود بیارن برای همزیستی و صلح،

values of beauty that don't exhibit ostentation,

ارزشهای زیباییی که به جای تظاهر،

but rather, approachability and ease,

دسترسی و سادگی رو به نمایش بگذاره،

moral values that promote generosity and acceptance,

ارزشهای اخلاقیی که مشوق پذیرش و سخاوت باشه،

architecture that is for everyone to enjoy, not just for the elite,

معماریی که برای لذت همگان هست، نه گلچینی از آدمها،

just as used to be in the shadowed alleys of the old Islamic city,

همانطور که در کوچه های تاریکِ شهر اسلامی بود،

mixed designs that encourage a sense of community.

طراحیِ ترکیبی باشه که حس اجتماعی رو ترغیب کنه.

There is a neighborhood here in Homs that's called Baba Amr

در حُمص محله ای هست به نام "بابا اَمر"

that has been fully destroyed.

که کامل تخریب شده.

Almost two years ago, I introduced this design

تقریبا دو سال پیش من طرحی رو ارائه کردم

into a UN-Habitat competition for rebuilding it.

به مسابقه خانه سازی UN برای بازسازی این محله.

The idea was to create an urban fabric inspired by a tree,

ایده من ایجاد یک بافت شهری بود، که از یک درخت الهام گرفته بود،

capable of growing and spreading organically,

قادر به رشد و گسترش طبیعی،

echoing the traditional bridge hanging over the old alleys,

با انعکاسی از پلهایی سنتی که روی کوچه های قدیمی معلق بودند،

and incorporating apartments, private courtyards, shops,

و آپارتمانها رو در بر داشتند، حیاطهای خصوصی، مغازه ها،

workshops, places for parking and playing and leisure,

کارگاه ها، پارکینگ‌ها، مکان‌های بازی و تفریح،

trees and shaded areas.

و درختها و فضاهای با سایه‌بان.

It's far from perfect, obviously.

عالی نیست، مشخصا.

I drew it during the few hours of electricity we get.

این طرح رو در چند ساعتی که برق داریم، کشیدم.

And there are many possible ways to express belonging and community

راههای زیادی برای بیان تعلق و اجتماع

through architecture.

در معماری هست.

But compare it with the freestanding, disconnected blocks

ولی اون رو با بلوکهای جدا، جدای تنها مقایسه کنید

proposed by the official project for rebuilding Baba Amr.

که توسط پروژه رسمی برای بازسازی "بابا اَمر" پیشنهاد شد.

Architecture is not the axis around which all human life rotates,

معماری، محوری نیست که تمام زندگی بشریت حولش بچرخد،

but it has the power to suggest and even direct human activity.

ولی قدرت آن را دارد که فعالیتهای بشری را تلقین یا حتی شکل دهد.

In that sense, settlement, identity and social integration

در این راستا اسکان، تلفیق هویت و اجتماع

are all the producer and product of effective urbanism.

همه محصول و سازنده شهرسازی موثر هستن.

The coherent urbanism of the old Islamic city

شهرسازی اصیل و زیبای شهر قدیمی اسلامی

and of many old European towns, for instance,

و یا خیلی از شهرهای قدیمی اروپا برای مثال،

promote integration,

یکپارچگی را تشویق می کنند،

while rows of soulless housing or tower blocks,

در حالی که ردیفهای بی روحِ خانه ها یا برجها،

even when they are luxurious,

حتی وقتی لوکس هستن

tend to promote isolation and "otherness."

موجب ترویج تنهایی و "غریبگی" هستن.

Even simple things

حتی چیزهای ساده

like shaded places or fruit plants or drinking water inside the city

مثل اماکن زیرسایه یا گیاهان میوه دار یا آب آشامیدنیِ داخل شهر

can make a difference in how people feel towards the place,

میتواند تفاوت ایجاد کند در اینکه مردم چه حسی نسبت به محلشان دارند،

and whether they consider it a generous place that gives,

و اینکه آیا آن را محلی با سخاوت می بینند، که می بخشد

a place that's worth keeping, contributing to,

محلی که ارزش نگهداری دارد، ارزش حمایت،

or whether they see it as an alienating place,

یا اینکه جایی می بینند که غریب است،

full of seeds of anger.

پُر از نطفه خشم.

In order for a place to give, its architecture should be giving, too.

برای آنکه محلی بخشنده باشد، معماریش باید بخشنده باشد.

Our built environment matters.

محیط ساخته شده ما مهم است.

The fabric of our cities is reflected in the fabric of our souls.

بافت شهر ما در بافت روحمان، منعکس است.

And whether in the shape of informal concrete slums

و چه به شکل یک زاغه نشین بتُنیِ بی قاعده،

or broken social housing

یا خانه سازیهای اجتماعی خراب شده،

or trampled old towns

یا شهرهای قدیمیِ لگد مال شده،

or forests of skyscrapers,

یا جنگلهایی از آسمان خراش ها،

the contemporary urban archetypes

الگوهای شهرسازی معاصر

that have emerged all across the Middle East

که در تمام خاورمیانه ظهور یافته اند

have been one cause of the alienation and fragmentation of our communities.

یکی از دلایل حس غُربت و از هم گسیختگی جوامع ما بوده اند.

We can learn from this.

می تونیم درس بگیریم.

We can learn how to rebuild in another way,

میتونیم یاد بگیریم از یه راهِ دیگه،

how to create an architecture that doesn't contribute only

که چگونه یک معماری بیافرینیم که فقط در خدمت

to the practical and economic aspects of people's lives,

ابعاد عملی و اقتصادی زندگی مردم نباشد،

but also to their social, spiritual and psychological needs.

بلکه پاسخ گوی نیازهای اجتماعی، معنوی و روانشناختی شان هم باشد.

Those needs were totally overlooked in the Syrian cities before the war.

این نیاز ها قبل از جنگ سوریه کامل نادیده شده بودن.

We need to create again cities that are shared

ما باید دوباره شهرهایی ایجاد کنیم

by the communities that inhabit them.

که ساکنانش، اونو با هم قسمت کنن.

If we do so, people will not feel the need

اگر چنین کنیم، مردم نیاز نخواهند داشت

to seek identities opposed to the other identities all around,

که در پی هویتی متضاد با هویتهای اطرافشون باشن،

because they will all feel at home.

چرا که دیگه همه احساس میکنن تو خونه خودشون هستن.
