How Syria's architecture laid the foundation for brutal war | Marwa Al-Sabouni

Hi. My name is Marwa, and I'm an architect.

I was born and raised in Homs,

a city in the central western part of Syria,

and I've always lived here.

저는 늘 이곳에 살았습니다.

After six years of war,

6년간의 전쟁으로

Homs is now a half-destroyed city.

홈스는 도시 절반이 파괴되었습니다.

My family and I were lucky; our place is still standing.

저와 제 가족은 다행히도 아직은 살고 있는 곳이 괜찮습니다.

Although for two years, we were like prisoners at home.

비록 지난 2년 동안 집에 죄수처럼 갇혀 있었지만 말이죠.

Outside there were demonstrations and battles and bombings and snipers.

밖에서는 시위, 전투, 폭격, 총격이 일어났습니다.

My husband and I used to run an architecture studio

저와 제 남편은 구도심 광장에서

in the old town main square.

건축 스튜디오를 운영했습니다.

It's gone, as is most of the old town itself.

사무실은 옛 도심지와 함께 사라졌습니다.

Half of the city's other neighborhoods

도시의 남은 절반은 지금 폐허가 되었습니다.

are now rubble.

Since the ceasefire in late 2015,

2015년 후반에 정전된 이래로

large parts of Homs have been more or less quiet.

홈스 대부분이 다소 조용해졌습니다.

The economy is completely broken, and people are still fighting.

경제는 완전히 무너졌고 사람들은 아직도 싸우고 있습니다.

The merchants who had stalls in the old city market

구도심에서 가게를 운영하던 상인들은

now trade out of sheds on the streets.

Under our apartment, there is a carpenter,

저희 아파트 아래에는 목수

sweetshops, a butcher, a printing house, workshops, among many more.

제과점, 정육점, 인쇄소, 작업장 등이 있습니다.

I have started teaching part-time,

저는 시간제 교사를 시작했고

and with my husband, who juggles several jobs,

여러 일을 하는 제 남편과 함께 작은 서점을 열었습니다.

we've opened a small bookshop.

Other people do all sorts of jobs to get by.

사람들은 온갖 일을 하며 그럭저럭 살아가고 있습니다.

When I look at my destroyed city, of course, I ask myself:

파괴된 도시를 보면 이런 생각이 듭니다.

What has led to this senseless war?

왜 이런 무분별한 전쟁이 일어났을까?

Syria was largely a place of tolerance,

시리아는 대체로 관용적인 곳이었습니다.

historically accustomed to variety,

역사적으로 다양성에 익숙해

accommodating a wide range of beliefs, origins, customs,

다양한 종교, 출신, 관습

goods, food.

물건, 음식을 받아들였습니다.

How did my country --

어떻게 우리나라가

a country with communities living harmoniously together

다양한 공동첵가 조화롭게 살고

and comfortable in discussing their differences --

서로의 차이를 편하게 논의하던 나라에서

how did it degenerate into civil war, violence, displacement

어떻게 타락하여 내전, 폭력, 난민

and unprecedented sectarian hatred?

그리고 전례 없는 파벌싸움까지 일어났을까요?

There were many reasons that had led to the war --

전쟁이 일어난 이유는 여러가지가 있습니다.

social, political and economic.

사회, 정치 그리고 경제적 상황입니다.

They all have played their role.

이들 모두가 영향을 미쳤습니다.

But I believe there is one key reason that has been overlooked

하지만 저는 우리가 간과하고 있는 중요한 이유가 있다고 믿습니다.

and which is important to analyze,

이것을 분석하는 것은 중요합니다.

because from it will largely depend

왜냐하면 그래야만 이런 일이

whether we can make sure that this doesn't happen again.

다시 일어나지 않게 할 수 있기 때문입니다.

And that reason is architecture.

그 이유는 바로 건축입니다.

Architecture in my country has played an important role

건축은 우리나라에서 파벌간의 다툼을 일으켜

in creating, directing and amplifying conflict between warring factions,

진행지키고 증폭하는데 중요한 역활을 했습니다.

and this is probably true for other countries as well.

그리고 이것은 다른 나라도 마찬가지일 것입니다.

There is a sure correspondence between the architecture of a place

한 지역의 건축물과 그곳에 사는 공동체의 특징 간에는

and the character of the community that has settled there.

확실한 상관관계가 있습니다.

Architecture plays a key role in whether a community crumbles

건축물은 공동체가 붕괴되거나 합쳐지는 데에

or comes together.

중요한 역할을 합니다.

Syrian society has long lived the coexistence

오랫동안 시리아는 전통과 배경이 다른

of different traditions and backgrounds.

사람들이 함께 살아 왔습니다.

Syrians have experienced the prosperity of open trade

시리아인들은 자유 무역과 지속 가능한 지역사회의

and sustainable communities.

번영을 경험해 왔습니다.

They have enjoyed the true meaning of belonging to a place,

사람들은 진정한 의미로 지역 구성원의 삶을 살았고

and that was reflected in their built environment,

그리고 그런 삶은 건축 환경에 반영이 되었습니다.

in the mosques and churches built back-to-back,

이슬람교 사원과 교회가

in the interwoven souks and public venues,

번잡한 시장과 공공장소에 맞닿아 있고

and the proportions and sizes based on principles of humanity and harmony.

그 비율과 크기는 인간미와 조화로움을 고려해서 결정되었죠.

This architecture of mixity can still be read in the remains.

이런 건축물의 융합은 잔해에서도 아직까지 볼 수 있습니다.

The old Islamic city in Syria was built over a multilayered past,

시리아의 고대 이슬람 도시는 오랜 역사를 통해 지어졌고

integrating with it and embracing its spirit.

그 역사를 통합하고 그 정신을 받아들였습니다.

So did its communities.

지역사회도 마찬가지 입니다.

People lived and worked with each other

사람들은 함께 일하고 살아왔습니다.

in a place that gave them a sense of belonging

그들이 소속감을 느끼고

and made them feel at home.

안락함을 느끼는 장소에서 말이죠.

They shared a remarkably unified existence.

사람들은 놀랍도록 하나되어 살아갔습니다.

But over the last century,

하지만 과거 수세기 동안

gradually this delicate balance of these places has been interfered with;

이 섬세한 균형은 점차 무너지기 시작했습니다.

first, by the urban planners of the colonial period,

강점기 시절의 도시 개발이 그 시작이었습니다.

when the French went enthusiastically about,

프랑스인들이 열광하며

transforming what they saw as the un-modern Syrian cities.

현대적이지 않다는 이유로 시리아 도시를 바꾸려 했고

They blew up city streets and relocated monuments.

도시의 거리를 부수고 기념물을 옮겼습니다.

They called them improvements,

그들은 이를 개선이라고 했지만

and they were the beginning of a long, slow unraveling.

도시는 오랫동안 서서히 해체되기 시작했습니다.

The traditional urbanism and architecture of our cities

우리의 전통적인 도시계획과 건축물은

assured identity and belonging not by separation,

분단이 아니라 결합으로서

정체성과 소속감을 확고히 해왔습니다.

but by intertwining.

But over time, the ancient became worthless, and the new, coveted.

하지만 시간이 갈수록 옛 것보다 새로움이 요구됐습니다.

The harmony of the built environment and social environment

건축환경과 사회환경의 조화는

got trampled over by elements of modernity --

근대화의 요소들에 짓밟혔습니다.

brutal, unfinished concrete blocks,

거칠고 세련미 없는 콘크리트 블록들

neglect, aesthetic devastation,

방치, 미적 황폐화

divisive urbanism that zoned communities by class, creed or affluence.

단절을 초래한 도시계획은 지역사회를 계급, 신앙, 재력으로 분열시켰습니다.

And the same was happening to the community.

그리고 지역사회에도 같은 일이 일어 났습니다.

As the shape of the built environment changed,

건축물의 환경이 달라지면서

so the lifestyles and sense of belonging of the communities

생활방식과 지역사회의 소속감 또한

also started changing.

변하기 시작했습니다.

From a register of togetherness, of belonging,

유대감과 소속감의 상징인 건축물이

architecture became a way of differentiation,

차별의 상징이 되었습니다.

and communities started drifting apart

그리고 지역사회도 분단되기 시작했습니다.

from the very fabric that used to unite them,

이전에는 그들을 하나로 만들어 주고

and from the soul of the place that used to represent their common existence.

공존의 상징이던 장소가 변하면서 말이죠.

While many reasons had led to the Syrian war,

많은 이유들로 인해 시리아 전쟁이 일어났지만

we shouldn't underestimate the way in which,

우리가 간과하지 말아야 할 것은

by contributing to the loss of identity and self-respect,

정체성과 자존감의 상실

urban zoning and misguided, inhumane architecture

도시의 구역화와 잘못된 비인도적 건축물이

have nurtured sectarian divisions and hatred.

파벌 분단과 증오를 키우는 데에 기여했다는 것입니다.

Over time, the united city has morphed into a city center

시간이 흐를수록 하나였던 도시는

도시 중심가와 이를 둘러싼 빈민가로 바뀌었습니다.

with ghettos along its circumference.

And in turn, the coherent communities became distinct social groups,

그 결과로 하나였던 지역사회도 구분된 사회 그룹으로 바뀌었습니다.

alienated from each other and alienated from the place.

개인은 서로를 배척하고 지역끼리도 배척하면서 말이죠.

From my point of view,

제가 보기에는

losing the sense of belonging to a place

지역에 대한 소속감을 잃고

and a sense of sharing it with someone else

타인과 공감하는 마음을 잃어버려

has made it a lot easier to destroy.

도시를 파괴하기가 훨씬 더 쉬웠을 겁니다.

The clear example can be seen in the informal housing system,

확실한 예를 무허가 주거 체계에서 볼 수 있습니다.

which used to host, before the war, over 40 percent of the population.

전쟁전에는 전체 인구의 40% 이상이 이런 주거체계에서 살았습니다.

Yes, prior to the war, almost half of the Syrian population

네. 전쟁 전에는 시리아 인구의 거의 절반이

lived in slums,

빈민가에서 살았습니다.

peripheral areas without proper infrastructure,

주변에 변변찮은 사회기반 시설이 없고

made of endless rows of bare block boxes

끝이 보이지 않는 판자촌에서 사람들이 살고 있었습니다.

containing people,

people who mostly belonged to the same group,

사람들은 대부분 같은 그룹에 속해 있습니다.

whether based on religion, class, origin or all of the above.

종교, 계급, 출신 혹은 그 무엇도 상관없이 말이죠.

This ghettoized urbanism proved to be a tangible precursor of war.

빈민가를 구분하는 도시계획이 전쟁의 발단이 되었습니다.

Conflict is much easier between pre-categorized areas --

미리 구분된 지역간의 갈등은 훨씬 쉽게 일어납니다.

where the "others" live.

"다른 사람들"이 사는 곳인 거죠.

The ties that used to bind the city together --

이 도시를 하나로 묶어주던 것들.

whether they were social, through coherent building,

같은 건물을 통한 사회적인 것이든

or economic, through trade in the souk,

시장에서 장사하는 경제적인 것이든

or religious, through the coexistent presence --

더불어 살던 종교적인 것이든

were all lost in the misguided and visionless modernization

잘못되고 통찰력 없는 건축환경의 현대화로

of the built environment.

모두 잃어버렸습니다.

Allow me an aside.

잠시 다른 이야기를 하자면

When I read about heterogeneous urbanism in other parts of the world,

세계 여러 도시의 이질적 도시계획에 대한 자료를 보면

involving ethnic neighborhoods in British cities

영국 도시들의 소수민족 지역이나

or around Paris or Brussels,

파리, 브뤼셀을 포함해서 말이죠.

I recognize the beginning of the kind of instability

이런 불안정의 시작을 볼 수 있습니다.

we have witnessed so disastrously here in Syria.

이곳 시리아에서 참담하게 목격한 것과 마찬가지로요.

We have severely destroyed cities,

시리아엔 많은 도시들이 파괴되었습니다.

such as Homs, Aleppo, Daraa and many others,

홈스, 알레포, 다라 그 외 많은 도시들이요.

and almost half of the population of the country is now displaced.

그리고 거의 인구 절반이 난민입니다.

Hopefully, the war will end,

전쟁이 끝나길 바라면서

and the question that, as an architect, I have to ask, is:

건축가로서 저의 질문은 이것입니다.

How do we rebuild?

어떻게 다시 지을 것인가?

What are the principles that we should adopt

어떤 원리를 받아들여야

in order to avoid repeating the same mistakes?

같은 실수를 반복하지 않을 수 있을까?

From my point of view, the main focus should be on creating places

제 생각에 중요한 것은 장소를 만드는 것입니다.

that make their people feel they belong.

사람들이 소속감을 느끼는 장소말이죠.

Architecture and planning need to recapture

전통적으로 그것을 해냈던 일부 가치를

some of the traditional values that did just that,

건축과 도시계획으로 다시 되찾아야 합니다.

creating the conditions for coexistence and peace,

공존과 평화를 위한 조건을 만들고

values of beauty that don't exhibit ostentation,

과시하지 않는 것이 아름답다는 가치를 만드는 것입니다.

but rather, approachability and ease,

하지만 접근성과 편의성보다는

moral values that promote generosity and acceptance,

너그러움과 포용을 추구하는 도덕적 가치관을 가져야 합니다.

architecture that is for everyone to enjoy, not just for the elite,

권력층만을 위한 것이 아니라 모두가 즐길 수 있는 건축이 필요합니다.

just as used to be in the shadowed alleys of the old Islamic city,

옛 이슬람 도시들에서 흔히 볼 수 있던

mixed designs that encourage a sense of community.

공동체를 강조하던 융합 디자인 말이죠.

There is a neighborhood here in Homs that's called Baba Amr

홈스에는 바바 아므르라는

that has been fully destroyed.

완전히 붕괴된 지역이 있습니다.

Almost two years ago, I introduced this design

약 2년 전에 저는 이 디자인을

into a UN-Habitat competition for rebuilding it.

UN 인간주거위원회의 재건축 공모에 제출했습니다.

The idea was to create an urban fabric inspired by a tree,

주제는 나무에 영감을 받은 도시구조 입니다.

capable of growing and spreading organically,

유기적으로 성장하고 뻗어나갈 수 있는 나무처럼

echoing the traditional bridge hanging over the old alleys,

옛 거리에 놓여있던 전통적인 다리를 모방해서

and incorporating apartments, private courtyards, shops,

아파트, 집뜰, 상점을 통합하고

workshops, places for parking and playing and leisure,

공장, 주차장, 놀이와 여가공간을 연결해서

trees and shaded areas.

나무와 그늘진 공간을 표현했죠.

It's far from perfect, obviously.

물론 전혀 완벽하지 않습니다.

I drew it during the few hours of electricity we get.

전기가 들어오는 몇 시간 동안에 이걸 그렸거든요.

And there are many possible ways to express belonging and community

건축을 통해서 소속감과 공동체를 표현할 수 있는

through architecture.

방법은 많습니다.

But compare it with the freestanding, disconnected blocks

하지만 공식적인 바바 아므르 재건축 계획에서 제안된

proposed by the official project for rebuilding Baba Amr.

독립적이고 단절된 지역 구획과 비교해 보세요.

Architecture is not the axis around which all human life rotates,

건축물을 회전축으로 두고 인간의 삶이 그 주위를 겉도는 것이 아니라

but it has the power to suggest and even direct human activity.

건축은 인간의 활동을 제시하고 심지어 직접 개입하는 힘을 가집니다.

In that sense, settlement, identity and social integration

그런 면에서 합치, 정체성, 사회통합

are all the producer and product of effective urbanism.

이 모두가 효과적인 도시계획을 이끄는 동시에 그 결과물이기도 합니다.

The coherent urbanism of the old Islamic city

예를 들어, 옛 이슬람 도시의 일관성있는 도시계획과

and of many old European towns, for instance,

옛 유럽식 마을들의 도시계획은

promote integration,

통합을 이끌어냈습니다.

while rows of soulless housing or tower blocks,

반면에 삭막한 주택과 고층 아파트들은

even when they are luxurious,

화려해 보이기는 하지만

tend to promote isolation and "otherness."

고립과 "나와는 다름"을 조장하기 쉽죠.

Even simple things

오히려 단순한 것

like shaded places or fruit plants or drinking water inside the city

도시 안의 그늘진 공간과 유실수 혹은 식수대 같은 것은

can make a difference in how people feel towards the place,

공간 안에서 사람들로 하여금 다른 감정을 갖게 할 수 있습니다.

and whether they consider it a generous place that gives,

너그러운 공간으로 느끼고

a place that's worth keeping, contributing to,

보존하고, 기여할만한 곳으로 느낄 것인가

or whether they see it as an alienating place,

아니면 낯선 공간, 분노의 씨앗이 가득한 공간으로

full of seeds of anger.

느낄 것인가 하는 거죠.

In order for a place to give, its architecture should be giving, too.

공간이 베풀게 하려면 건축도 베풀어야 합니다.

Our built environment matters.

우리가 만드는 환경이 중요합니다.

The fabric of our cities is reflected in the fabric of our souls.

우리 도시의 구조는 우리 정신세계를 반영합니다.

And whether in the shape of informal concrete slums

그리고 무허가 콘크리트 슬럼가의 모습에서나

or broken social housing

파괴된 공공주택

or trampled old towns

짓밟힌 옛 마을들

or forests of skyscrapers,

고층 빌딩숲

the contemporary urban archetypes

현재의 전형적 도시형태

that have emerged all across the Middle East

중동 전역에 걸쳐서 나타나는 이런 모습들이

have been one cause of the alienation and fragmentation of our communities.

우리 공동체를 소외시키고 분열시키는 원인이 되고 있습니다.

We can learn from this.

우리는 여기에서 교훈을 얻을 수 있습니다.

We can learn how to rebuild in another way,

방법을 달리하여 도시를 다시 건설할 방법을 배울 수 있습니다.

how to create an architecture that doesn't contribute only

사람들 삶의 실질적이고 경제적인 면에서

to the practical and economic aspects of people's lives,

기여할 뿐만 아니라

but also to their social, spiritual and psychological needs.

사회, 종교, 심리적 요구에도 기여하는 건축을 창조하는 방법이죠.

Those needs were totally overlooked in the Syrian cities before the war.

전쟁 전에는 시리아 도시에서 그런 요구들이 완전히 무시되었습니다.

We need to create again cities that are shared

그 안에 살고 있는 공동체들이 함께 공유하는 도시를

by the communities that inhabit them.

다시 재창조해야 합니다.

If we do so, people will not feel the need

그렇게만 한다면

to seek identities opposed to the other identities all around,

사람들은 주위 사람들과 비교해서 자신의 정체성을 찾지 않아도 될 겁니다.

because they will all feel at home.

모두가 집에 있는 듯이 느낄테니까요.
