Currently, most refugees live in the cities

لە ئێستادا، زۆرینەی پەنابەران لە شارەکان نیشتەجێبن

rather than in the refugee camps.

وەک لەوەی لە خێوەتگەی پەنابەراندا نیشتەجێ بن.

We represent over 60 percent

لە سەرووی ٦٠ لە سەدا مەزەندەیان دەکەین

of the number of refugees globally.

With the majority of refugees living in urban areas,

there is a strong need for a paradigm shift and new thinking.

پێویستیەکی هەنوکەیی بۆ گۆڕینی ڕیشەیی و تێڕوانینی تازە هەیە.

Rather than wasting money on building walls,

لە بڕی ئەوەی پارە بۆ دروست کردنی باڵەخانەکان بە فێڕۆ بدرێت،

it would be better to spend on programs

باشتر دەبێ ئەگەر لە بەرنامەکانی یارمەتیدانی پەنابەران سەرف بکرێت

to help refugees to help themselves.

سەرف بکرێت بۆ ئەوەی یارمەتی خۆیان بدەن.

We always have to leave behind all our possessions.

ئێمە هەمیشە هەموو سەروەت و سامانمان لە دوای خۆمان جێ دەهێلین.

But not our skills and knowledge.

جگە لە لێهاتووی و زانیاریەکانمان.

If allowed to live a productive life,

ئەگەر ڕێگە بدرێت ژیانێکی بە بەرهەم بژیت،

refugees can help themselves

پەنابەران دەتوانن یارمەتی خۆیان بدەن

and contribute to the development of their host country.

وهەروەها لە بەرەو پێشبردنی وڵاتی خانەخوێ ڕۆڵیان هەبێت.

I was born in the city called Bukavu,

من لە شارێک بە ناوی بوکاڤو لەدایکبووم،

South Kivu,

لە باشووری کیڤو،

in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

لە کۆماری دیموکراسی کۆنگۆ.

I am the fifth-born in a family of 12 children.

من پێنجەم منداڵی خێزانێکی دوانزە منداڵیم.

My father, a mechanic by profession,

باوکم، پیشەی فیتەر بوو،

worked very hard to send me to school.

بە هەموو توانای خۆی کاری دەکرد بۆ ئەوەی من بنێرێتە قوتابخانە.

Just like other young people,

وەک گشت گەنجانی هاوتەمەنم،

I had a lot of plans and dreams.

منیش خەون و پیلانم زۆر هەبوون.

I wanted to complete my studies,

دەمویست خوێندن تەواو بکەم،

get a nice job,

کارێکی باشم دەست کەوێت،

marry and have my own children

هاوسەرگیری بکەم و منداڵی خۆشم هەبێت

and support my family.

و پاڵپشتی خێزانەکەشم بکەم.

But this didn't happen.

بەڵام ئەمە ڕووی نەدا.

War in my homeland forced me to flee to Uganda in 2008,

نۆ ساڵ لەمەوبەر، لە ساڵی ٢٠٠٨ شەڕ لە وڵاتەکەم

nine years ago.

ناچاری کردم بۆ ئۆگاندا هەڵبێم .

My family joined a steady exodus of refugees

خێزانەکەم لە کامپالای پایتەختی ئۆگەندا پەیوەندیان بە

who settled in Uganda's capital, Kampala.

کەمپێکی نیشتەجێبوونی پەنابەرانەوە کرد و تێیدا جێگیر بوون.

In my country,

پێشتر لە وڵاتەکەم،

I lived already in the city,

من لە شاردا دەژیام،

and we felt Kampala was much better than a refugee camp.

هەستمان کرد کامپالا لە خێوەتگەی پەنابەران باشترە.

Refugees in the cities

پەنابەران لە شارەکاندا

have always been denied international assistance,

لە یارمەتی نێودەوڵەتى بێبەری کرابوون،

even after their recognition by UNHCR in 1997.

تەنانەت دوای ناسینیشیان لەلایەن ڕێکخراوی UNHCR لە ساڵی ۱۹۹۷دا.

In addition to the poverty problem we were confronted with

سەڕەڕای کێشەکانی هەژاری، ئێمە

as the local urban poor,

وەک هەژارێکی شارنشین،

we were facing challenges due to our refugee status,

ڕووبەڕووی کۆمەڵێک بەربەست بەهۆی دۆخی پەنابەریمان دەبووینەوە،

such as a language barrier.

وەک بەربەستی زمان.

In Congo, the official language is French.

لە کۆنگۆ، زمانی ڕەسمی فەڕەنسییە.

But in Uganda, it is English.

بەڵام لە ئۆگاندا، ئینگلیزییە.

We didn't have access to education and health.

لە خوێندن و تەندروستی باش بێ بەش بووین.

We were exposed to harassment,

ئێمە توشی هەراسان کردن،

exploitation, intimidation and discrimination.

چەوساندنەوە، هەڕەشکردن و جیاکاری دەکراینەوە.

Humanitarian organizations mostly focused

ڕێکخراوە خێرخوازییەکان بە زۆری تیشکیان دەخستە سەر

on the formal settlement in rural areas,

ئاوارەکانی نیشتەجێی ناوچە گوند نیشینەکان،

and there was nothing in place for us.

و هیچ شتێکیش لە شارەکان بۆ ئێمە بەردەست نەبوو.

But we didn't want handouts.

بەڵام ئێمە هاوکاری و خێرمان نەدەویست.

We wanted to work and support ourselves.

بەڵکو دەمان ویست کار بکەین و خۆمان پشگیری خۆمان بکەین.

I joined my other two colleagues in exile

لە تاڕاوگەدا پەیوەندیم بە دووهاوڕێی ترم کرد و ڕێکخراوێکمان

and set up an organization to support other refugees.

YARID -- Young African Refugees for Integral Development --

یارید -- پەنابەرە ئەفریقییە لاوەکان-- بۆ گەشەپێدانی بنەڕەتی --

began as a conversation within the Congolese community.

وەک گفتۆگۆیەک لە کۆمەڵگەی کۆنگۆلیس دەست بەکار بوو.

We asked the community

ئێمە پرسیارمان لە خەڵک کرد

how they could organize themselves to solve these challenges.

چۆن دەتوانن خۆیان ڕێکبخەن بۆ چارەسەر کردنی ئەم کێشانە.

The YARID programs for support evolve in stages,

بەرنامەی یارید بۆ پاڵپشتی بە چەند قۆناغێک گەشەی کرد،

progressing from soccer community, to English language

پێشکەوتن لە بواری تۆپێ پێ، بەرەو زمانی ئینگلیزی

to sewing livelihoods.

بۆ دابین کردنی ئامرازی پەیداکردنی بژێوی.

The soccer changed the energy

تۆپی پێ وزەی

of unemployed youth

لە گەنجی بێ کار

and connected people from different communities.

و پێک بەستنی خەڵک لە کۆمەڵگەی جیاواز گۆڕی.

The free English classes

وانەی خۆڕایی ئینگلیزی

help empower people to engage with the Ugandan community,

یارمەتی خەڵکیدا تا لەگەڵ خەڵکی ئۆگەندا تێکەڵ ببن،

allowing them to get to know their neighbors and sell wares.

ڕێگەیان خۆش کرد تا دراوسێکانیان بناسن و کەلوپەلەکانیان بفرۆشن.

The vocational training program offers livelihood skills,

بەرنامەی مەشق پێکردنی گەشەپێدانی کارامەیی بژێوی ژیان و

and with them, important opportunities for economic self-reliance.

هەڵ کاری گرنگ بۆ دابین کردنی بژێوی ڕەخساند.

We've seen so many families

ئێمە زۆر خێزانمان بینیوە

become self-sustaining.

کەسی بەهێزیان لێ دروست بوو.

We've seen who no longer needs our help.

زۆرێکیان پێویستیان بە یارمەتی ئێمە نەماوە.

As YARID's programs have expanded,

کاتێ بەرنامەی یارید فراوان بوو،

it has included an increasing range of nationalities --

خەڵکی لە نەتەوەی جیاواز لە ئامێز گرت --

Congolese, Rwandan, Burundian,

کۆنگەلیس، ڕواندان، بوروندیان،

Somalis, Ethiopian, South Sudanese.

سۆمالیس، ینسۆپیان، باشوری سودان.

Today, YARID has supported over 3,000 refugees across Kampala

ئەمڕۆ یارید پاڵپشتی زیاد لە۳۰۰۰ هەزار، خێزانی پەنابەرانی کامپالا دەکات

and continues supporting more.

و بەردەوامیشە لە پاڵپشتی زیاتر.

Refugees want empowerment, not handouts.

پەنابەران دەیانویست ڕێگەیان پێبدرێت، نەک خێریان پێبکرێت.

We know our community better than anyone.

ئێمە کۆمەڵگەی خۆمان لە هەموو کەس باشتر دەناسین.

We understand the challenges and opportunities we face

ئێمە، لە تەنگ و چەڵەمە و بەربەستەکانی بەردەم پەنابەران

to become self-reliant.

بۆ ئەوەی پشت بەخۆیان ببەستن، تێگەیشتبووین.

I know better than anyone

من لە هەموو خەڵک باشتر

that initiatives created by refugees work.

لە دەستپێشخەرییەکانی پەنابەران تێگەیشتم.

They need to be internationally recognized and supported.

ئەم دەست پێشخەریانە پێویستیان بە پشتگیری و پاڵپشتی نێونەتەوەیی هەیە.

Give us the support we deserve,

ئەم پاڵپشتییەمان پێ ببخەشن کە شایستەمانە.

and we will pay you back with interest.

و ئێمەش بە زیادەوە سودتان پێدەگەیەنین.
