Currently, most refugees live in the cities

We always have to leave behind all our possessions.

우리는 항상 우리가 소유한 모든 것을 버리고 떠나야만 합니다.

But not our skills and knowledge.

하지만 우리의 기술과 지식은 아니죠.

If allowed to live a productive life,

우리가 생산적인 삶을 살 수 있다면

refugees can help themselves

난민들은 자립할 수 있고

and contribute to the development of their host country.

I was born in the city called Bukavu,

저는 부카부라는 도시에서 태어났습니다.

South Kivu,

콩고민주공화국의

in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

남키부 주에 위치한 도시죠.

I am the fifth-born in a family of 12 children.

저는 12 자녀 중 5번째로 태어났습니다.

My father, a mechanic by profession,

직업이 정비공이었던 아버지는

worked very hard to send me to school.

저를 학교에 보내기 위해 정말 열심히 일하셨습니다.

Just like other young people,

다른 어린 아이들과 마찬가지로

I had a lot of plans and dreams.

많은 꿈과 계획이 있었습니다.

I wanted to complete my studies,

저는 제가 하고 싶은 공부를 마치고

get a nice job,

좋은 직장을 얻고

marry and have my own children

결혼해서 제 아이를 낳고,

and support my family.

제 가족을 부양하고 싶었습니다.

But this didn't happen.

그러나 그렇게 할 수 없었죠.

War in my homeland forced me to flee to Uganda in 2008,

2008년 제 고향에서의 전쟁은 저를 우간다로 도망가게 했죠.

nine years ago.

9년 전 이었습니다.

My family joined a steady exodus of refugees

제 가족들은 우간다의 수도인 캄팔라에서 살던

who settled in Uganda's capital, Kampala.

난민들의 계속된 탈출에 동참하였습니다.

In my country,

우리 나라에서

I lived already in the city,

이미 저는 도시에 살았는데

and we felt Kampala was much better than a refugee camp.

캄팔라가 난민캠프보다 훨씬 더 좋은 곳이라고 느꼈습니다.

Refugees in the cities

도시의 난민들은

have always been denied international assistance,

1997년 UNHCR이 공식 인정한 이후에도

even after their recognition by UNHCR in 1997.

국제 원조 대상에서 항상 제외되어 왔습니다.

In addition to the poverty problem we were confronted with

빈곤 문제 뿐만 아니라, 지역 도시 가난이라는

as the local urban poor,

어려움에 직면하였고

we were facing challenges due to our refugee status,

언어 장벽과 같은 우리의 난민 지위로 인해

such as a language barrier.

어려움을 직면하게 되었습니다.

In Congo, the official language is French.

콩고의 공식 언어는 프랑스어 입니다.

But in Uganda, it is English.

하지만 우간다에서는 영어를 쓰죠.

We didn't have access to education and health.

우리는 교육을 받거나 복지를 누리지 못했습니다.

We were exposed to harassment,

우리는 괴롭힘 당하고

exploitation, intimidation and discrimination.

이용당하고, 위협 받았으며, 차별도 받았습니다.

Humanitarian organizations mostly focused

인도주의 단체들은 대부분

on the formal settlement in rural areas,

시골 지역의 형식적 해결에만 관심을 두었고

and there was nothing in place for us.

우리를 위한 해결책은 없었죠.

But we didn't want handouts.

하지만 우리는 지원을 원하는 것이 아닙니다.

We wanted to work and support ourselves.

우리는 우리 스스로 일하고 자립하기를 원했습니다.

I joined my other two colleagues in exile

저는 두 명의 동료들과 함께 망명하였고

and set up an organization to support other refugees.

다른 피난민들을 지원하기 위한 기구를 설립했습니다.

YARID -- Young African Refugees for Integral Development --

YARID -- 필요한 발전을 위한 젊은 아프리카 피난민 모임이라는 뜻으로

began as a conversation within the Congolese community.

콩고 지역사회 내의 대화로써 시작하였습니다.

We asked the community

우리는 지역사회에게

how they could organize themselves to solve these challenges.

이러한 어려움을 해결하기 위해 스스로를 어떻게 조직할 것인지 물었죠.

The YARID programs for support evolve in stages,

지원을 위한 YARID 프로그램은 단계적으로 진화하고 있으며,

progressing from soccer community, to English language

축구 모임부터 영어와, 생계를 위한 바느질 교육까지

to sewing livelihoods.

발전해나가고 있죠

The soccer changed the energy

축구는 실업 상태의 젊은이들에게

of unemployed youth

에너지를 북돋아주었고

and connected people from different communities.

다른 지역사회의 사람들과 연결시켜주었습니다.

The free English classes

무료 영어 교육은

help empower people to engage with the Ugandan community,

사람들이 그들의 이웃을 알아가고, 각종 물품을 판매하고,

allowing them to get to know their neighbors and sell wares.

우간다 지역사회에 참여할 수 있도록 돕는 역할을 합니다

The vocational training program offers livelihood skills,

직업 교육 프로그램은 생계를 위한 기술을 제공하고,

and with them, important opportunities for economic self-reliance.

이와 더불어, 경제적 자립을 위한 중요한 각종 기회를 제공합니다.

We've seen so many families

우리는 자립을 이뤄낸

become self-sustaining.

정말 많은 가족들을 봐왔습니다.

We've seen who no longer needs our help.

우리의 도움이 더 이상 필요하지 않은 그런 사람들을 말이죠

As YARID's programs have expanded,

YARID 프로그램이 확장됨에 따라

it has included an increasing range of nationalities --

점점 더 많은 국가들에 우리의 손이 뻗어나가고 있습니다

Congolese, Rwandan, Burundian,

콩고, 르완다, 부룬디,

Somalis, Ethiopian, South Sudanese.

소말리아, 에티오피아, 남수단까지 말이죠.

Today, YARID has supported over 3,000 refugees across Kampala

오늘날, YARID는 캄팔라 전역의 3000명 이상의 난민들을 지원하며,

and continues supporting more.

이는 지금도 계속 되고 있죠.

Refugees want empowerment, not handouts.

We know our community better than anyone.

우리는 누구보다 우리의 지역사회를 잘 알고 있습니다.

We understand the challenges and opportunities we face

우리는 자립을 위해 우리가 직면하는 많은 기회와

to become self-reliant.

어려움을 인지하고 있습니다.

I know better than anyone

저는 그 누구보다 잘 알고 있습니다.

that initiatives created by refugees work.

난민들이 생각해낸 계획이 통한다는 것을 말이죠.

They need to be internationally recognized and supported.

그들은 국제적으로 인정받고 지원받아야 합니다.

Give us the support we deserve,

우리가 받아야 마땅할 지원을 해주세요.

and we will pay you back with interest.

그리고 덤을 붙여 돌려 드리겠습니다.
