I joined a few months after September 11,

feeling like I think most people in the country did at the time,

filled with a sense of patriotism and retribution

that, coupled with that fact that I wasn't doing anything.

I was 17, just graduated from high school that past summer,

Mishawaka is many good things but cultural hub of the world it is not,

so my only exposure to theater and film

was limited to the plays I did in high school

I was serious enough about acting

that I auditioned for Juilliard when I was a senior in high school,

didn't get in,

لكنني لم أحصل على الدور،

determined college wasn't for me and applied nowhere else,

علمت أن الكلية ليست مناسبة لي لكنني لم أسجل في مكان آخر،

which was a genius move.

I also did that Hail Mary LA acting odyssey

that I always heard stories about,

of actors moving to LA with, like, seven dollars

got in my car, drove home,

Seventeen, Mishawaka ...

parents' house, paying rent, selling vacuums ...

cutting grass at the local 4-H fairgrounds.

This was my world going into September, 2001.

So after the 11th,

and feeling an overwhelming sense of duty,

and just being pissed off in general -- at myself,

my parents, the government;

I joined the Marine Corps and loved it. I loved being a Marine.

It's one of the things I'm most proud of having done in my life.

Firing weapons was cool,

And then, a few years into my service

was very devastating for me.

I have a very clear image of leaving the base hospital on a stretcher

and my entire platoon is waiting outside to see if I was OK.

And then, suddenly, I was a civilian again.

I knew I wanted to give acting another shot,

I thought all civilian problems are small compared to the military.

I mean, what can you really bitch about now, you know?

"It's hot.

I was a Marine,

I knew how to survive.

I'd go to New York and become an actor.

If things didn't work out,

I'd live in Central Park and dumpster-dive behind Panera Bread.

I re-auditioned for Juilliard and this time I was lucky,

أعدت اختبار أداء دور جوليارد وكنت حينها محظوظاً،

I got in.

اذ أنني حصلت على الدور.

But I was surprised by how complex the transition was

ولكنني كنت مندهشاً من التحول من كوني

from military to civilian.

من مشاة البحرية الى مدني.

And I was relatively healthy; I can't imagine going through that process

وكنت حينها في صحة جيدة، اذ لا أستطيع تخيل نفسي

on top of a mental or physical injury.

وأنا أعاني من اصابة عقلية أو بدنية.

But regardless, it was difficult.

لكن وبغض النظر، كان الأمر صعباً.

In part, because I was in acting school --

والجزء الأهم و هو انني كنت في مدرسة التمثيل --

I couldn't justify going to voice and speech class,

اذ لا أستطيع تبرير الذهاب الى حصص التدريب الخاصة بالصوت والالقاء،

throwing imaginary balls of energy at the back of the room,

وأنا أتخيل رمي كرات وهمية الى مؤخرة الغرفة،

doing acting exercises where I gave birth to myself --

وأقوم بتمارين التمثيل وأنا أتلوى من الألم.

while my friends were serving without me overseas.

ويخدم أصدقائي بلدهم خارج البلاد من دوني.

But also, because I didn't know how to apply the things

ولأنني لم أستطع أيضاً تطبيق ما تعلمته

I learned in the military to a civilian context.

في الجيش على الصعيد المدني.

I mean that both practically and emotionally.

وأعني سواء من الناحية العملية أو العاطفية.

Practically, I had to get a job.

عملياً كان علي ايجاد عمل.

And I was an Infantry Marine,

وكنت من مشاة البحرية،

where you're shooting machine guns and firing mortars.

حيث تقوم بإطلاق العيارات النارية وإطلاق قذائف الهاون.

There's not a lot of places you can put those skills in the civilian world.

ولا وجود للكثير من الاماكن حيث يمكنك تطبيق مثل هذا النوع من المهارات.

Emotionally, I struggled to find meaning.

عانيت عاطفياً لإيجاد هدف ومعنى لحياتي.

In the military, everything has meaning.

Everything you do is either steeped in tradition

كان لكل شيء تفعله اما معنى تقليدي

or has a practical purpose.

You can't smoke in the field

لا يمكنك التدخين في الميدان

because you don't want to give away your position.

You don't touch your face -- you have to maintain

ولا يمكنك لمس وجهك -- ووجب عليك الحفاظ على

a personal level of health and hygiene.

You face this way when "Colors" plays,

out of respect for people who went before you.

Walk this way, talk this way because of this.

Your uniform is maintained to the inch.

How diligently you followed those rules spoke volumes

Your rank said something about your history

and the respect you had earned.

In the civilian world there's no rank.

ليست هناك رتبة في العالم المدني.

Here you're just another body,

اذ أنك لست سوى جسد آخر،

and I felt like I constantly had to prove my worth all over again.

واحسست وكأنه كان علي اثبات جدارتي من جديد.

And the respect civilians were giving me while I was in uniform

كل الاحترام الذي قدم لي من المدنيين بينما كنت ارتدي الزي

didn't exist when I was out of it.

لم يعد موجوداً حين خلعته.

There didn't seem to be a ...

ولم يكن هنالك نوع من الإحساس ...

a sense of community,

بالانتماء للمجتمع،

whereas in the military, I felt this sense of community.

بينما احسست بمفهوم الانتماء للمجتمع في الجيش.

How often in the civilian world

كم مرة في العالم المدني هذا

are you put in a life-or-death situation with your closest friends

تم وضعك في وقف حياة او موت وانت مع اصدقائك

and they constantly demonstrate that they're not going to abandon you?

واظهروا لك وبكل ثبات انهم لن يقوموا بالتخلي عنك؟

And meanwhile, at acting school ...

وفي الوقت نفسه، في مدرسة التمثيل ...

(Laughter)

I was really, for the first time,

اكتشفت ولأول مرة،

discovering playwrights and characters and plays

ان كتاب المسرح والشخصيات والمسرحيات

that had nothing to do with the military,

ليس لهم أي علاقة بالجيش.

but were somehow describing my military experience

ولكنهم قاموا بترجمة تجربتي في الجيش

in a way that before to me was indescribable.

بأسلوب لا يوصف بالنسبة لي.

And I felt myself becoming less aggressive

وشعرت انني أصبحت أقل عدوانية

as I was able to put words to feelings for the first time

واصبحت قادراً على ترجمة الكلمات لأحاسيس وللمرة الأولى

and realizing what a valuable tool that was.

وايقنت حينها كم انها أداة قيمة.

And when I was reflecting on my time in the military,

وحين كنت اعكس واقع تجربي في الجيش،

I wasn't first thinking on the stereotypical drills

and discipline and pain of it;

والانضباط والآلام.

but rather, the small, intimate human moments,

بل فكرت في اللحظات الحميمية الإنسانية الصغيرة،

moments of great feeling:

friends going AWOL because they missed their families,

يصرخ الأصدقاء لكونهم اشتاقوا الى عائلاتهم،

friends getting divorced,

أصدقاء على وشك الطلاق،

grieving together, celebrating together,

يحزنون معاً، يحتفلون معاً،

all within the backdrop of the military.

وكل ذلك في ظل الجيش.

I saw my friends battling these circumstances,

رأيت أصدقائي وهم يواجهون تلك الصعوبات،

and I watched the anxiety it produced in them and me,

ورأيت القلق والجزع الذي تسببت به تلك الصعوبات لهم ولي،

not being able to express our feelings about it.

وعدم قدرتنا على التعبير عن مشاعرنا حول الموضوع.

The military and theater communities are actually very similar.

ان مجتمعات الجيش والمسرح متشابهة جداً.

You have a group of people trying to accomplish a mission

اذ لديك مجموعة من الأشخاص في محاولة لتحقيق هدف ما

greater than themselves; it's not about you.

هدف أعظم من أنفسهم؛ ولا يتعلق بك فقط وحدك.

You have a role, you have to know your role within that team.

لديك دور، وعليك أن تعرف دورك في الفريق.

Every team has a leader or director;

كل فريق له قائد أو مخرج؛

sometimes they're smart, sometimes they're not.

You're forced to be intimate with complete strangers

in a short amount of time;

I thought, how great would it be to create a space

where you answer a question about pop culture,

The point is more, how great would it be to have theater presented

through characters that were accessible without being condescending.

So we started this nonprofit called Arts in the Armed Forces,

where we tried to do that,

tried to join these two seemingly dissimilar communities.

We pick a play or select monologues from contemporary American plays

It's a powerful thing,

getting in a room with complete strangers

and reminding ourselves of our humanity,

and that self-expression is just as valuable a tool

as a rifle on your shoulder.

And for an organization like the military,

I'm always reminded that acting is many things.

on a street where the lights have all been shot out

في شارع محطم الأنوار

by people who'd rather do what they do in this city in the dark.

And half a block away from janitor man,

there's a group of good-for-nothings who don't know no better,

And I see janitor man mumble something in drunk language and turn pale,

I can hear his stomach trying to hurl its way out his Dickies.

So I swoop down, like, mad-fast

But then ...

وعندها ...

one out of the three good-for-nothings gets it to the head -- pow!

تلقى واحد من الثلاثة العديمي المنفعة الضربة في رأسه -- طاخ!

And number two swings blindly into the dark cape before him,

ولوح الثاني بيده بصورة عمياء تجاه الرداء الذي أمامه،

but before his fist hits anything,

ولكن قبل ضرب يده لأي شيء،

I grab a trash can lid and --

أخذت بغطاء سلة المهملات --

right in the gut!

وضربته في معدته!

And number one comes back with the jump kick,

وجاء الأول برفصه هوائية،

but I know judo karate, too, so I'm like --

لكنني اعرف الجودو والكاراتيه، أيضاً، وقمت حينها --

But before I can do any more damage,

ولكن وقبل أن أقوم بالمزيد من الأضرار،

suddenly we all hear a "click-click."

سمع جميعنا فجأة "طق-طق".

And suddenly everything gets quiet.

وأصبح فجأة كل شيء هادئا.

And the one good-for-nothing left standing

وبقي ما تبقى من عديمي المنفعة واقفاً

grips a handgun and aims it straight up,

أمسك بمسدس ووجهه الي،

like he's holding Jesus hostage,

وكأنه يمسك باليسوع رهينة،

like he's threatening maybe to blow a hole in the moon.

ويهدد وكأنه سيحدث ثقباً في القمر.

And the good-for-nothing who got it to the head,

وعديم المنفعة والذي تلقى الضربة في رأسه،

who tried to jump-kick me,

والذي حاول أن يرفصني،

and the other good-for-nothing who got it in the gut,

وعديم المنفعة الآخر والذي تلقى الضربة في معدته،

is both scrambling back away from the dark figure before 'em.

هرولا الى الوراء بعيدا هرباً من فارس الظلام الواقف امامهم.

And the drunk man, the janitor man,

وعامل النظافة، السكير،

is huddled in a corner, praying to Saint Anthony

قابع في الزاوية، راجياً القديس أنتوني

'cause that's the only one he could remember.

لأنه الشخص الوحيد الذي يستطيع تذكره.

And there's me:

eyes glowing white,

And he lowers his arm.

And he points it at me

ووجه المسدس الي

and gives the moon a break.

وترك القمر بحاله.

And he aims it right between my pointy ears,

ووجه المسدس الى ما بين اذني المدببتين،

like goal posts and he's special teams.

كفريق استثنائي أمام قائمي المرمى.

And janitor man is still calling Saint Anthony,

ومازال عامل النظافة يناجي القديس أنتوني،

but he ain't pickin' up.

ولكنه لا يرد عليه.

And for a second,

ولمرة ثانية،

it seems like ...

بدى الأمر وكأنه ...

maybe I'm gonna lose.

من الممكن لي أن أخسر.

And he's on the floor

into whatever toxic waste, chemical sludge shithole they crawled out of.

And it's just me and janitor man.

ولم يبقى سواي وعامل النظافة.

And I pick him up,

ورفعته للأعلى،

and I wipe sweat and cheap perfume off his forehead.

وقمت بمسح العرق والعطر الرخيص عن جبهته.

And he begs me not to hurt him

وتوسل الي ان لا أؤذيه

and I grab him tight by his janitor-man shirt collar,

وأمسكت به من قبة القميص الخاص بعمال النظافة،

and I pull him to my face

وسحبته بالقرب من وجهي

and he's taller than me but the cape helps,

هو أطول مني قامة ولكن ساعدني الرداء،

so he listens when I look him straight in the eyes.

لذا فهو يسمعني عندما أنظر اليه في عينية،

And I say two words to him:

وأقول له كلمتين،

"Go home."

"اذهب للمنزل"

And he does,

وذهب بالفعل،

checking behind his shoulder every 10 feet.

ينظر من خلف كتفيه كل عشرة خطوات.

And I swoosh from building to building on his way there

وهو يهرع بين المباني في طريقه الى المنزل

'cause I know where he lives.

لأنني أعرف مكان سكنه.

And I watch his hands tremble as he pulls out his key chain

وأرى يديه وهي ترتعش بينما يقوم بسحب سلسلة مفاتيح

and opens the door to his building.

ويقوم بفتح باب المبنى التابع لسكنه.

And I'm back in bed

أصبحت في سريري من جديد،

before he even walks in through the front door.

قبل وصوله الى باب المنزل.

And I hear him turn on the faucet

وأسمعه وهو يدير حنفية المياه

and pour himself a glass of warm tap water.

ويسكب لنفسه كوباً من الماء الدافئ.

And he puts the glass back in the sink.

ويضع كوب الشرب في المغسلة.

And I hear his footsteps.

وأسمع خطوات قدميه.

And they get slower as they get to my room.

وهي تتباطأ كلما اقترب الى غرفتي.

And he creaks my door open, like, mad-slow.

وفتح باب غرفتي ببطء شديد.

And he takes a step in,

ودخل اليها بحذر شديد،

which he never does.

على غير عادته.

And he's staring off into nowhere,

وهو يحدق في الفراغ،

his face, the color of sidewalks in summer.

ولون وجهه كلون الأرصفة في فصل الصيف.

And I act like I'm just waking up

وعندها تصرف وكأنني استيقظت للتو

and I say, "Ah, what's up, Pop?"

وقلت "مرحباً، كيف الحال يا أبي؟"

And janitor man says nothing to me.

ولم يقل عامل النظافة شيئا لي.

But I see in the dark,

ولكنني ارى في الظلام،

I see his arms go limp

يداه وهي مرتخيه

and his head turns back, like, towards me.

وادار رأسه الي.

And he lifts it for I can see his face,

ورفع رأسه كي أرى وجهه،

for I could see his eyes.

ولأستطيع رؤية عينيه.

And his cheeks is drippin', but not with sweat.

ووجنتاه تقطران لكن ليس عرقاً.

And he just stands there breathing,

وكان واقفا حينها هناك يتنفس فقط،

like he remembers my eyes glowing white,

وكأنه تذكر عيناي وهي تتوهج غضباً،

like he remembers my bulletproof chest,

وكأنه تذكر صدري الذي لا يخترقه الرصاص،

like he remembers he's my pop.

وكأنه تذكر أنه والدي.

And for a long time I don't say nothin'.

ومكثت صامتاً ولمدة طويلة.

And he turns around, hand on the doorknob.

واستدار، ويده على مقبض الباب.

And he ain't looking my way,

ولم يكن ينظر ناحيتي.

but I hear him mumble two words to me:

ولكنني سمعته وهو يتمتم كلمتين لي:

"I'm sorry."

"أنا آسف."

And I lean over, and I open my window just a crack.

انحنيت قليلاً وقمت بشق النافذة قليلاً.

If you look up high enough,

إذا قمت بالنظر عالياً بما يكفي،

you could see me.

And from where I am --
