I joined a few months after September 11,

9/11 테러가 일어나고 몇 달 뒤에 입대 했습니다.

feeling like I think most people in the country did at the time,

filled with a sense of patriotism and retribution

애국심과 복수심에 가득 찼고

and the desire to do something --

다들 무언가 하기를 원했지만

that, coupled with that fact that I wasn't doing anything.

몇몇의 이유로 저는 아무 것도 하지 않았습니다.

I was 17, just graduated from high school that past summer,

저는 당시 17살로 여름이 지나 고등학교를 막 졸업했고

living in the back room of my parents' house paying rent,

in the small town I was raised in in Northern Indiana,

called Mishawaka.

I can spell that later for people who are interested --

Mishawaka is many good things but cultural hub of the world it is not,

so my only exposure to theater and film

그래서 제가 고등학교때 봤었던 연극과 영화라고는

was limited to the plays I did in high school

고등학교때 제가 출연했었던 연극들과

and Blockbuster Video, may she rest in peace.

이제는 망한 "블락버스터 비디오샵" 이었습니다. 천국에선 평화롭기를!

I was serious enough about acting

저는 연기에 꽤나 진지했기에

that I auditioned for Juilliard when I was a senior in high school,

고등학교 3학년 때 줄리어드 대학에 지원했습니다.

didn't get in,

그리고 떨어져버렸습니다.

determined college wasn't for me and applied nowhere else,

그 후, 대학은 나에게 맞지 않는다는 생각에 아무 곳도 지원하지 않았습니다.

which was a genius move.

지금 보면 참으로 현명한 선택이었네요.

I also did that Hail Mary LA acting odyssey

저는 또한 소위 "LA: 연기원정대" 에도 도전했었는데요.

that I always heard stories about,

배우들이 LA에 찾아가 7달러를 받고 연기를 시작해

of actors moving to LA with, like, seven dollars

좀 더 좋은 일을 찾고 나중에는 성공한다는

and finding work and successful careers.

여러분이나 제가 많이 들어왔던 이야기 말이죠.

I got as far as Amarillo, Texas, before my car broke down.

저는 그 때 텍사스의 아마릴로에서 차가 고장이 나서

I spent all my money repairing it,

차 수리하는데 돈을 다 썼었지만

finally made it to Santa Monica --

결국 산타 모니카에 도착할 수 있었습니다.

not even LA --

LA도 아니고요.

stayed for 48 hours wandering the beach, basically,

거기서 전 48시간 동안 해변가만 돌아다니다

got in my car, drove home,

차를 타고 집으로 돌아왔습니다.

thus ending my acting career, so --

그렇게 제 연기 인생은 끝이 났습니다.

(Laughter)

Seventeen, Mishawaka ...

나이 17살에 미샤와카에서

parents' house, paying rent, selling vacuums ...

부모님 집에 월세를 내며 청소기 판매나

telemarketing,

텔레마케팅을 했죠.

cutting grass at the local 4-H fairgrounds.

지역 4-H 야영장 잔디깎이도 했고요.

This was my world going into September, 2001.

이것이 2001년 9월의 저의 상태였습니다.

So after the 11th,

9/11 사태를 겪은 후

and feeling an overwhelming sense of duty,

나라를 지키는 의무에 대한 과한 믿음과

and just being pissed off in general -- at myself,

전체적으로 화가 났었습니다.

my parents, the government;

제 자신에게, 부모님께, 정부에게요.

not having confidence, not having a respectable job,

자신감이 없고 번듯한 직장이 없다는 것과

my shitty mini-fridge that I just drove to California and back --

캘리포니아까지 몰고 갔던 조그만 내 똥차에 대한 분노였죠.

I joined the Marine Corps and loved it. I loved being a Marine.

그래서 해병대에 입대했고 좋았습니다. 해병대원이 되는 게 좋았어요.

It's one of the things I'm most proud of having done in my life.

제 인생에 했던 가장 자랑스러운 일이었죠.

총을 쏘는 건 너무나 멋진 일이었고

Firing weapons was cool,

폭탄을 유도시켜 폭파시키는 일도 좋았습니다.

driving and detonating expensive things was great.

But I found I loved the Marine Corps the most

하지만 그 중에 해병대가 가장 좋았던 점은

for the thing I was looking for the least when I joined,

제가 자원했을 때 가장 기대하지 않았던 것이었습니다.

which was the people:

바로 사람들이었죠.

these weird dudes -- a motley crew of characters

미국 방방곡곡에서 모인

from a cross section of the United States --

오합지졸 제 동료들과

that on the surface I had nothing in common with.

저는 아무런 공감대가 없어 보였습니다.

And over time,

하지만 시간이 지날수록

all the political and personal bravado

저를 군대로 이끌었던

that led me to the military dissolved,

정치적 그리고 개인적 허세들은 사라져버렸고

and for me, the Marine Corps became synonymous with my friends.

해병대란 내 친구라는 말과 똑같은 뜻이 되어버렸습니다.

And then, a few years into my service

군에 입대한지 몇 년이 흐르고

and months away from deploying to Iraq,

이라크로 파병가기 전 몇 개월이 남았을 때

I dislocated my sternum in a mountain-biking accident,

산악 자전거를 타다 저의 흉골이 부서졌고

and had to be medically separated.

부상으로 인해 파병을 가지 못하게 되었습니다.

Those never in the military may find this hard to understand,

군대에 있어보지 않으신 분들은 이해하실 수 없겠지만

but being told I wasn't getting deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan

아프가니스탄이나 이라크로 파병갈 수 없다는 소식은

저에게 너무나 절망적이었습니다.

was very devastating for me.

I have a very clear image of leaving the base hospital on a stretcher

아직도 제 머리 속엔 침대에 실려 병원을 떠나던 저와

and my entire platoon is waiting outside to see if I was OK.

저를 밖에서 걱정하며 기다리던 동료들의 모습이 선명합니다.

And then, suddenly, I was a civilian again.

그리고 갑자기 저는 민간인이 되었습니다.

I knew I wanted to give acting another shot,

전 제가 다시 연기를 하고 싶다는 걸 잘 알고 있었습니다.

because -- again, this is me --

왜냐면 제 생각으로는

I thought all civilian problems are small compared to the military.

사회에서 겪는 문제는 군대에 비하면 아무 것도 아닌 일이었으니까요.

I mean, what can you really bitch about now, you know?

평소에 사람들이 짜증내는 것들을 생각해보세요.

"It's hot.

"너무 더워요.

Someone should turn on the air conditioner."

누가 에어컨 좀 켜주세요."

"This coffee line is too long."

"커피 타려는데 줄이 너무 길어요." 뭐 이런 것들이잖아요.

I was a Marine,

저는 해병이었습니다.

I knew how to survive.

저는 생존하는 법을 알고 있었습니다.

I'd go to New York and become an actor.

저는 뉴욕에 가서 배우가 되려 했습니다.

일이 잘 안풀리면

If things didn't work out,

I'd live in Central Park and dumpster-dive behind Panera Bread.

센트럴 파크에 살면서 빵집 쓰레기통이나 찾아보면 된다고 생각했습니다.

(Laughter)

I re-auditioned for Juilliard and this time I was lucky,

줄리어드에 다시 지원 했고 이번에는 운이 좋았습니다.

합격해버렸습니다.

I got in.

하지만 저는군인에서 민간인이 되는

But I was surprised by how complex the transition was

과정의 복잡함에 놀라버렸습니다.

from military to civilian.

And I was relatively healthy; I can't imagine going through that process

저는 괜찮았지만, 정신적이나 육체적으로 큰 상처 받은 군인들이

on top of a mental or physical injury.

이 상황을 대처한다는 것은 상상할 수도 없었습니다.

But regardless, it was difficult.

하지만, 어쨌든 저에게도 어려운 일이었습니다.

In part, because I was in acting school --

제가 연기 학교에서 하는 일들을 받아들이기 힘들었어요.

I couldn't justify going to voice and speech class,

발성과 말하기 수업을 듣거나

throwing imaginary balls of energy at the back of the room,

방 뒤에서 상상의 에너지 공을 던지거나

doing acting exercises where I gave birth to myself --

애 낳는 연기를 하거나...

(Laughter)

while my friends were serving without me overseas.

제 친구들은 나라 밖에서 나라를 위해 헌신하고 있었다고요.

But also, because I didn't know how to apply the things

다른 이유로는, 제가 군대에서 배운 것들을

I learned in the military to a civilian context.

민간에 적용하는 방법을 몰랐습니다.

I mean that both practically and emotionally.

감정적으로나 현실적으로나 느낄 수 있었습니다.

현실적으로는, 취업을 해야 했습니다.

Practically, I had to get a job.

And I was an Infantry Marine,

해병대 보병 출신으로 배웠던

where you're shooting machine guns and firing mortars.

기관총과 포탄을 쐈던 경험은

There's not a lot of places you can put those skills in the civilian world.

사회에서 쓸 만한 곳이 별로 없더라고요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Emotionally, I struggled to find meaning.

감정적으로는, 의미를 찾는다는 게 너무나 힘들더군요.

In the military, everything has meaning.

군대에서는 모든 것에 의미가 있습니다.

군대에서 하는 모든 것은 전통적으로 하는 것

Everything you do is either steeped in tradition

or has a practical purpose.

혹은 현실적으로 필요한 것들이었습니다.

You can't smoke in the field

전장에선 담배를 피울 수 없습니다.

적들이 나의 위치를 알 수 있으니까요.

because you don't want to give away your position.

얼굴을 만져서도 안 됩니다.

You don't touch your face -- you have to maintain

개인적 위생과 건강을 유지해야 하기 때문이죠.

a personal level of health and hygiene.

You face this way when "Colors" plays,

"Colors" (묵념의 노래)가 연주될 때는 이 쪽을 바라봅니다.

out of respect for people who went before you.

싸우다 순국한 군인들을 추모하기 위해서죠.

Walk this way, talk this way because of this.

걷거나 말하는 방법에도 이유가 존재합니다.

Your uniform is maintained to the inch.

유니폼은 반드시 깔끔하게 유지해야 합니다.

How diligently you followed those rules spoke volumes

성실히 규율을 따르는 정도가

about the kind of Marine you were.

그 사람이 어떤 해병인지를 말해줍니다.

Your rank said something about your history

계급은 그 사람이 걸어온 길을

and the respect you had earned.

받고 있는 존경을 나타냅니다.

In the civilian world there's no rank.

하지만 사회에는 그런 계급이 없습니다.

Here you're just another body,

그저 일반인 중 한 명일뿐이죠.

and I felt like I constantly had to prove my worth all over again.

저는 저를 끊임없이 증명해야 한다는 감정이 들었습니다.

And the respect civilians were giving me while I was in uniform

제복을 입을 떄 받았던 시민들의 존경은

didn't exist when I was out of it.

군대에서 벗어난 순간 사라졌습니다.

There didn't seem to be a ...

공동체에 속해있다는 느낌을

a sense of community,

찾을 수 없는 것 같았습니다.

whereas in the military, I felt this sense of community.

군대에서는 느낄 수 있었는데 말이죠.

How often in the civilian world

사회에서는 얼마나 자주

are you put in a life-or-death situation with your closest friends

친한 친구들과 삶과 죽음의 기로에 서거나

and they constantly demonstrate that they're not going to abandon you?

그들이 나를 버리지 않을 것이라는 믿음을 가질 기회가 있을까요?

And meanwhile, at acting school ...

그러는 와중에, 연기 학교에서는

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I was really, for the first time,

제 인생 처음으로

discovering playwrights and characters and plays

군대와는 아무런 관련이 없지만

that had nothing to do with the military,

생각하지 못했던 방법으로

but were somehow describing my military experience

제가 군에서 느꼈던 경험을 묘사하는

in a way that before to me was indescribable.

극작가, 극중 인물, 연극들을 발견할 수 있었습니다.

And I felt myself becoming less aggressive

저는 처음으로 저의 감정을 글로 옮길 수 있었고

as I was able to put words to feelings for the first time

창작이 얼마나 가치있는지를 깨달았습니다.

and realizing what a valuable tool that was.

그리고 내 안의 공격성이 서서히 가라앉음을 느꼈습니다.

And when I was reflecting on my time in the military,

제가 군대에서의 제 생활을 돌이켜 볼 때

I wasn't first thinking on the stereotypical drills

저는 누구나 생각하는 훈련 혹은 규율

and discipline and pain of it;

그 안의 고통에 대해서 생각하지 않습니다.

but rather, the small, intimate human moments,

그 대신 저는, 작고 사적인 인간적인 순간

moments of great feeling:

커다란 감정이 가득했던 순간을 기억합니다.

friends going AWOL because they missed their families,

가족이 그리워 무단으로 이탈한 친구들

이혼을 맞게 된 친구들

friends getting divorced,

grieving together, celebrating together,

같이 슬퍼하고, 같이 기뻐했던 순간들

all within the backdrop of the military.

군대라는 사회에서 일어났던 모든 일들이요.

I saw my friends battling these circumstances,

전 제 친구들이 그러한 환경과 맞서 싸우는 것을 보았고

and I watched the anxiety it produced in them and me,

그 것으로 인해 생긴, 하지만 밖으로 표출할 수는 없었던

not being able to express our feelings about it.

우리들 안에 있는 불안도 보았습니다.

The military and theater communities are actually very similar.

군대와 연극은 알고보면 사회 구조가 매우 비슷합니다.

You have a group of people trying to accomplish a mission

사람들은 자신보다 거대한 무언가를

greater than themselves; it's not about you.

달성하기 위해 노력합니다. 당신 혼자의 문제가 아니죠.

You have a role, you have to know your role within that team.

공동체 안에서 당신에게 주어진 역할을 이해해야 합니다.

Every team has a leader or director;

그리고 모든 팀에는 리더 혹은 감독이 존재합니다.

sometimes they're smart, sometimes they're not.

때때로는 똑똑하지만 아닐 때도 있죠.

You're forced to be intimate with complete strangers

그리고 여러분은 모르는 사람과 친해져야만 하며

in a short amount of time;

그 것은 짧은 시간 내 이루어져야 합니다.

the self-discipline, the self-maintenance.

스스로 엄격하고 스스로 관리해야 합니다.

I thought, how great would it be to create a space

그리고 저는, 보기에는 달라보이는 이 두 사회가 함께 할 수 있는

that combined these two seemingly dissimilar communities,

공간을 만들수 있다면 얼마나 좋을까 라는 생각을 하게 되었습니다.

that brought entertainment to a group of people

사람들에게 즐거움을 가져다주고

that, considering their occupation,

군인이라는 신분상

could handle something a bit more thought-provoking

참석해야만 하는 소위 즐거운 행사와는 달리

than the typical mandatory-fun events

다시 한번 자신을 돌아보게 되는 그런 것 말입니다.

that I remember being "volun-told" to go to in the military --

군에 있을 때, 안 가도 된다고 했지만 결국은 참석해야했던 것이요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

all well-intended but slightly offensive events,

잘 준비됐었지만, 뭔가 꺼림칙했던 행사에 참여했던 기억이 있습니다.

like "Win a Date with a San Diego Chargers Cheerleader,"

예를 들어 "샌디에이고 차져스의 치어리더들과 데이트를" 같은 거요.

where you answer a question about pop culture,

그 곳에서, 만약 당신이 대중문화에 관한 질문을 대답해서 맞춘다면

and if you get it right you win a date,

데이트를 할 수 있는 기회를 얻을 수 있었습니다.

which was a chaperoned walk around the parade deck

하지만 데이트라는 것은 그저 행사장 주위를 같이 걷는 것뿐이었죠.

with this already married, pregnant cheerleader --

게다가 치어리더는 이미 결혼한데다가 임신까지 하신 분이었고요.

(Laughter)

Nothing against cheerleaders, I love cheerleaders.

치어리더에 대한 악감정은 없어요. 전 치어리더를 사랑합니다.

The point is more, how great would it be to have theater presented

요점은, 만약 군대 내에 공연을 할 수 있는 극장이 있어서

through characters that were accessible without being condescending.

주어진 캐릭터를 보여줄 수 있다면 좋을 거라는 거예요.

So we started this nonprofit called Arts in the Armed Forces,

그래서 저희는 "군대 속에 예술" 이라는 비영리 단체를 시작했습니다.

where we tried to do that,

그 단체를 통해, 우리는 보이기엔 달라보이는 두 사회를

tried to join these two seemingly dissimilar communities.

We pick a play or select monologues from contemporary American plays

that are diverse in age and race like a military audience is,

grab a group of incredible theater-trained actors,

그리고 훌륭한 연극배우들을 모아

arm them with incredible material,

엄청난 내용으로 그들을 준비시켰죠.

keep production value as minimal as possible --

연극 제작비는 아낄 수 있을 만큼 아꼈어요.

no sets, no costumes, no lights, just reading it --

세트, 의상, 조명 다 없었습니다. 그저 연기만 했습니다.

to throw all the emphasis on the language

문장의 가치를 강조하기 위해서요.

and to show that theater can be created at any setting.

그리고 극장이 어떤 상황에서든 존재할 수 있다는 걸 보여주기 위해서요.

It's a powerful thing,

연극의 결과는 엄청났습니다.

getting in a room with complete strangers

모르는 사람들로 가득 찬 방 안에서

and reminding ourselves of our humanity,

우리들은 스스로의 인간성에 대해 다시 한 번 생각했으며

and that self-expression is just as valuable a tool

자기 표현이라는 것은 어깨 위 총만큼

as a rifle on your shoulder.

가치있다는 것을 깨달았죠.

And for an organization like the military,

약어를 많이 쓰는 것에 자부심을 가질만큼 설명을 생략하는

that prides itself on having acronyms for acronyms,

군대같은 집단안에 있는 사람들은

you can get lost in the sauce

그들이 직접 집단의 경험을 설명하려고 할 때

when it comes to explaining a collective experience.

많은 어려움을 겪습니다.

And I can think of no better community

그러므로 그들에게

to arm with a new means of self-expression

표현의 새로운 방법을 알려주는 것은

than those protecting our country.

We've gone all over the United States and the world,

And for the military, it's the exact same.

And in doing this for the past six years,

I'm always reminded that acting is many things.

It's a craft, it's a political act, it's a business, it's --

whatever adjective is most applicable to you.

But it's also a service.

하지만 연기는 또한 일이기도 합니다.

I didn't get to finish mine,

so whenever I get to be of service

to this ultimate service industry, the military, for me, again --

there's not many things better than that.

And I get like, like ... transformational.

by people who'd rather do what they do in this city in the dark.

And half a block away from janitor man,

I can hear his stomach trying to hurl its way out his Dickies.

So I swoop down, like, mad-fast

and I'm like darkness, I'm like, "Swoosh!"

And I throw a batarang at the one naked lightbulb.

one out of the three good-for-nothings gets it to the head -- pow!

세 놈의 쓸데없는 놈중 한 명의 머리를 때려버렸지. "퍽!"

And number two swings blindly into the dark cape before him,

다른 놈은 망토에 가려져서 손을 이리저리 휘둘렀어.

but before his fist hits anything,

하지만 그의 주먹이 뭔가를 치기 전에

I grab a trash can lid and --

난 쓰레기통 뚜껑을 들고

right in the gut!

명치를 날려버렸지!

And number one comes back with the jump kick,

마지막 남은 놈은 나한테 점프킥을 날렸지만

but I know judo karate, too, so I'm like --

나도 가라테나 유도는 알고 있었지. 나는 이렇게 한 방!

But before I can do any more damage,

suddenly we all hear a "click-click."

And suddenly everything gets quiet.

모두가 조용해졌어.

And the one good-for-nothing left standing

혼자 남았던 한 놈이

grips a handgun and aims it straight up,

권총을 들고 나한테 조준하고 있었던거야.

like he's holding Jesus hostage,

마치 예수를 인질로 삼은 것처럼 위풍당당했지.

like he's threatening maybe to blow a hole in the moon.

그 패기는 마치 달에 구멍이라도 낼 듯 싶었어.

And the good-for-nothing who got it to the head,

머리를 맞고 쓰러졌던 놈과

who tried to jump-kick me,

점프킥을 하려다 쓰러진 놈

and the other good-for-nothing who got it in the gut,

명치를 맞았던 나머지 한 놈

그 놈들은 뒤도 안 돌아보고 도망쳤어.

is both scrambling back away from the dark figure before 'em.

And the drunk man, the janitor man,

그리고 그 술 취했던 청소부,

is huddled in a corner, praying to Saint Anthony

그 사람은 모퉁이에 웅크려서 성 안토니한테 기도하더라고.

'cause that's the only one he could remember.

그가 기억하는 성인이 그 사람밖에 없었으니까.

And there's me:

그리고 내가 있었어.

eyes glowing white,

눈은 밝게 빛나고

cape blowing softly in the wind.

망토는 조용히 바람에 휘날리고 있었지.

Bulletproof chest heaving,

And janitor man is still calling Saint Anthony,

And for a second,

산으로 피부를 지져버렸어. "으아아아아!"

And he's on the floor

그는 바닥에 쓰러졌고

and I'm standing over him

그 앞에 난 섰지.

and I got the gun in my hands now

내가 총을 집어들었어.

and I hate guns, I hate holding 'em 'cause I'm Batman.

난 총이 싫어. 잡기조차도 싫지. 난 배트맨이니까.

And, asterisk:

참고로 나 배트맨은

Batman don't like guns 'cause his parents got iced by guns a long time ago.

But for just a second,

And the good-for-nothings become good-for-disappearing

그리고 그 쓸데없는 놈은 사라져버린 놈이 되어버렸어.

into whatever toxic waste, chemical sludge shithole they crawled out of.

그들이 기어나왔던 화학 약품으로 가득찬 맨홀 같은 걸로 들어가버렸지.

And it's just me and janitor man.

나와 청소부가 남았어.

And I pick him up,

그를 일으켜세웠지.

and I wipe sweat and cheap perfume off his forehead.

이마의 땀과 값싼 향수를 닦아줬어.

And he begs me not to hurt him

자길 해치지 말라고 빌더군.

and I grab him tight by his janitor-man shirt collar,

셔츠 멱살을 잡고 일으켜세웠어.

and I pull him to my face

그리고 내 얼굴 앞까지 들어올렸지.

and he's taller than me but the cape helps,

나보다 컸지만, 망토가 내 키를 숨겨줬어.

so he listens when I look him straight in the eyes.

그의 눈을 똑바로 보니까 그제서야 내 말귀를 듣더군.

And I say two words to him:

딱 두 단어만 말했어.

"Go home."

"집에 가."

And he does,

가더군.

checking behind his shoulder every 10 feet.

3걸음마다 뒤를 돌아보면서 말이야.

And I swoosh from building to building on his way there

난 빌딩 사이로 그를 쫓아갔어. 조용히 말이야.

'cause I know where he lives.

어디 사는 지 알고 있었거든.

And I watch his hands tremble as he pulls out his key chain

구멍에 열쇠를 넣어 돌리고 문을 열면서

and opens the door to his building.

그는 손떨림을 멈추질 않더군.

And I'm back in bed

난 내 침대에 누웠어.

before he even walks in through the front door.

그가 집 문을 넘어오기도 전에 말이야.

And I hear him turn on the faucet

물을 트는 소리가 들리더군.

and pour himself a glass of warm tap water.

미지근한 물이 담긴 컵을 자기 몸에 뿌리더군.

And he puts the glass back in the sink.

컵을 다시 싱크대에 놓았어.

And I hear his footsteps.

그의 발자국 소리를 들었지.

And they get slower as they get to my room.

그 소리는 내 방 근처에서 점점 느려졌어.

And he creaks my door open, like, mad-slow.

문을 살포시 열더군. 아주 살포시.

And he takes a step in,

그는 방으로 한 걸음 내딛으려고 했는데

which he never does.

실제로 그러진 못했어.

And he's staring off into nowhere,

그저 멍하니 있더군.

his face, the color of sidewalks in summer.

그의 얼굴은 마치 여름 땡볕에 보이는 보도블럭의 색깔이었어.

And I act like I'm just waking up

난 막 일어난 척 했지.

and I say, "Ah, what's up, Pop?"

"아빠, 다녀오셨어요?"

And janitor man says nothing to me.

청소부는 아무런 말도 하지 않았어.

But I see in the dark,

하지만 어둠 속에서 난 느낄 수 있었어.

I see his arms go limp

그의 팔은 굳었고

and his head turns back, like, towards me.

그는 내게로 고개를 돌렸지.

And he lifts it for I can see his face,

그는 고개를 들었고 난 그의 얼굴을 볼 수 있었어.

for I could see his eyes.

그의 눈을 볼 수 있었어.

And his cheeks is drippin', but not with sweat.

그의 뺨에는 뭔가 흐르는 것 같았지만, 땀은 아니었어.

And he just stands there breathing,

그리고 그는 조용히 서 있었지.

like he remembers my eyes glowing white,

마치 내 눈이 반짝였던 것을 기억하듯.

like he remembers my bulletproof chest,

내 방탄복을 기억하듯.

like he remembers he's my pop.

그가 내 아버지라는 것을 기억하듯.

And for a long time I don't say nothin'.

난 오랫동안 아무런 말도 하지 않았어.

And he turns around, hand on the doorknob.

그는 다시 고개를 돌리고 문고리를 잡았어.

And he ain't looking my way,

내 쪽을 보지 않더군.

but I hear him mumble two words to me:

하지만 난 그가 나에게 속삭인 두 단어를 들었어.

"I'm sorry."

And I lean over, and I open my window just a crack.

난 창에 기대어, 창문을 아주 조금 열었어.

If you look up high enough,

네가 고개를 들어 하늘을 본다면

you could see me.

넌 나를 볼 수 있을거야.

And from where I am --
