I spent three years talking to girls ages 15 to 20

I should probably say right up top that despite the hype,

But it wasn't always that boys didn't want to.

Girls expressed a sense of shame around their genitals.

Women's feelings about their genitals

Yet, Debby Herbenick, a researcher at Indiana University,

The rising pubic hair removal reminded me of the 1920s,

when women first started regularly shaving their armpits and their legs.

That's when flapper dresses came into style,

There's a way that I think that this too is a sign.

The shaving trend has sparked another rise in labiaplasty.

The labiaplasty trend has become so worrisome

That's the idea that sex has political, as well as personal implications,

Intimate justice asks us to consider

Who is entitled to enjoy it?

Who is the primary beneficiary?

And how does each partner define "good enough"?

Honestly, I think those questions are tricky and sometimes traumatic

but when we're talking about girls,

I just kept coming back to the idea that their early sexual experience

What if just for a second

Again, not because intercourse isn't a big deal --

talking about those intimate acts in a different way --

the way we mostly have changed

in the way that we talk about women in the public realm.

Consider a survey of 300 randomly chosen girls

انظروا في هذه الدراسة لإستطلاعية لـِ 300 فتاة تم اختيارهن عشوائيًا

from a Dutch and an American university,

من جامعتين هولندية وأمريكية، جامعتين متشابهتين

two similar universities,

talking about their early experience of sex.

يتحدثن عن تجاربهن الجنسية في سن مبكرة.

The Dutch girls embodied everything we say we want from our girls.

جسّدت الفتيات الهولنديات كل شيء قلناه ونريده من فتياتنا.

They had fewer negative consequences,

كان لديهن عواقب سلبية قليلة

like disease, pregnancy, regret --

مثل الأمراض والحمل والندم --

more positive outcomes

كان لديهن نتائج إيجابية أكثر

like being able to communicate with their partner,

مثل القدرة على التواصل مع شركائهن الذين قلن أنهن يعرفن جيدًا

who they said they knew very well;

preparing for the experience responsibly;

يُحضّرن من أجل التجربة بسمؤولية، ويمتعن أنفسهن.

enjoying themselves.

What was their secret?

The Dutch girls said that their doctors, teachers and parents

قالت الفتيات الهولنديات بأن أطبائهن ومعلميهن وأولياء أمورهن

talked to them candidly,

تحدثوا إليهن بصراحة منذ سن مبكرة

from an early age,

about sex, pleasure and the importance of mutual trust.

What's more,

while American parents weren't necessarily less comfortable talking about sex,

بينما لم يكن أولياء الأمور الأمريكيين بالضرورة اقل راحة في الحديث عن الجنس

we tend to frame those conversations

entirely in terms or risk and danger,

whereas Dutch parents talk about balancing responsibility and joy.

I have to tell you,

كأم بنفسي، ينبغي أن أقول لكم

as a parent myself,

that hit me hard,

because I know,

had I not delved into that research,

I would have talked to my own child about contraception,

about disease protection,

about consent because I'm a modern parent,

وحول الموافقة لأنني امرأة معاصرة، وأعتقدتُ بأن الأمر تم بشكل جيد.

and I would have thought ...

job well done.

Now I know that's not enough.

أعلمُ الآن أن ذلك ليس كافيًا.

I also know what I hope for for our girls.

وأعلمُ أيضًا ما أتمناه لفتياتنا.

I want them to see sexuality as a source of self-knowledge,

أريدُ منهن رؤية الجنس كمصدر للمعرفة الذاتية

creativity and communication,

والإبداع والتواصل رغم المخاطر المحتملة.

despite its potential risks.

I want them to be able to revel in their bodies' sensuality

أريدُ منهن أن يكن قادرات للإستمتاع بإحساس أجسادهن دون الخضوع إليه.

without being reduced to it.

I want them to be able to ask for what they want in bed,

أريدُ منهن أي يكن قادرات لطلب ما يرغبن في السرير والحصول عليه.

and to get it.

I want them to be safe from unwanted pregnancy,

أريدُ منهن أن يكن في مأمن من حملٍ غير مرغوب فيه ومرض وقسوة

disease,

cruelty,

dehumanization,

ومعاملة لا انسانية وعنف.

violence.

If they are assaulted,

إذا تم الإعتداء عليهن،

I want them to have recourse from their schools,

أريدُ منهن الحصول على ملاذ في مدارسهن

their employers,

من اصحاب أعمالهن، ومن المحاكم.

the courts.

It's a lot to ask,

يوجد الكثير لطلبه

but it's not too much.

لكنه ليس كثيرًا جدًا.

As parents, teachers, advocates and activists,

كأولياء أمور ومعلمين ومؤيديين ونشطاء

we have raised a generation of girls to have a voice,

قد أنشأنا جيلًا من الفتيات اللواتي لهن مكانة وصوت

to expect egalitarian treatment in the home,

لتوقع المساواة و المعاملة بالمثل في البيت، وفي المدرسة وفي مكان العمل.

in the classroom,

in the workplace.

Now it's time to demand that intimate justice

حان الوقت لطلب تلك العدالة الحميمة في الحياة الشخصية كذلك.

in their personal lives as well.
