We need to find better ways to remember them.

When in '96 I was sent

في 1996 أُرسلت

by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to the North Caucasus,

I knew some of the risks.

كنت أدرك وجود بعض المخاطر.

Five colleagues had been killed,

فقد قُتل خمسة من زملائي،

three had been seriously injured,

seven had already been taken hostage.

So we were careful.

We were using armored vehicles, decoy cars,

changing patterns of travel, changing homes,

Yet on a cold winter night of January '98, it was my turn.

When I entered my flat in Vladikavkaz with a guard,

we were surrounded by armed men.

They took the guard, they put him on the floor,

I was handcuffed, blindfolded, and forced to kneel,

When it happens to you,

there is no time for thinking, no time for praying.

My brain went on automatic,

rewinding quickly the life I'd just left behind.

It took me long minutes to figure out

I was kept in an underground cellar,

I had no towel, no soap, no toilet paper,

We are breaking my nerves very slowly.

Isolation and darkness are particularly difficult to describe.

How do you describe nothing?

There are no words for the depths of loneliness I reached

In the darkness, sometimes I played imaginary games of checkers.

It's a constant internal debate; there is no one to arbitrate.

Once a guard came to me, very aggressively, and he told me,

"Today you're going to kneel and beg for your food."

I wasn't in a good mood, so I insulted him.

I insulted his mother, I insulted his ancestors.

The consequence was moderate: he threw the food into my waste.

The day after he came back with the same demand.

He got the same answer,

Four days later, the body was full of pain.

I didn't know hunger hurt so much when you have so little.

So when the guards came down,

I begged for my food.

There are many questions I could not understand,

The length of the interrogation was the duration of the tape:

15 songs, 45 minutes.

I would always long for the last song.

On one day, one night in that cellar, I don't know what it was,

I heard a child crying above my head,

a boy, maybe two or three years old.

So when Ruslan came the day after,

I kept talking about NGOs supplying medicines to local clinics

Ruslan was the most brutal man I ever met.

He did not touch me anymore.

He did not ask any other questions.

I was no longer just a commodity.

Two days after, I was transferred to another place.

There, a guard came to me, very close -- it was quite unusual --

It was so painful. It was like a blade in the belly.

It took me weeks of internal thinking to try to reconcile

the good reasons we had to assist that family

Yet we do this because one life matters.

Sometimes that's the only difference you make --

one individual, one family, a small group of individuals --

Many young humanitarian workers

Humanitarian aid workers know the risk they are taking

yet our life, our job, is becoming increasingly life-threatening,

Do you know that since the millennium,

2013 broke new records:

155 colleagues killed,

So many broken lives.

Until the beginning of the civil war in Somalia in the late '80s,

حتى بداية الحرب الأهلية في الصومال في أواخر الثمانينيات،

humanitarian aid workers were sometimes victims

كان عمال الإغاثة الانسانية أحيانا مايقعون ضحايا

of what we call collateral damages,

لما يعرف باسم الأضرار الثانوية،

but by and large we were not the target of these attacks.

ولكن في الأغلب الأعم، لم نكن المستهدفين من تلك الهجمات.

This has changed.

ولكن هذا الأمر تغير.

24 colleagues were killed.

قتل 24 من الزملاء.

Gone are the days when a U.N. blue flag or a Red Cross

لقد مضت الأيام التي كانت فيها راية الأمم المتحدة الزرقاء أو علامة الصليب الأحمر

would automatically protect us.

يمكن أن تحمينا بصورة تلقائية

Criminal groups and some political groups

فالعصابات الإجرامية وبعض الجماعات السياسية

have cross-fertilized over the last 20 years,

تبادلت الخبرات خلال العشرين عاما الماضية،

and they've created these sort of hybrids

وكونت تلك الأنماط الجديدة

with whom we have no way of communicating.

التي ليس لدينا سبيل للتواصل معها،

Humanitarian principles are tested, questioned, and often ignored,

حيث تُختبر المبادئ الانسانية، وتتعرض للتشكيك، ثم غالبا ما يتم تجاهلها،

but perhaps more importantly, we have abandoned the search for justice.

ولكن، لعل الأمر الاكثر أهمية هو أننا، تخلينا عن السعي لتحقيق العدالة.

There seems to be no consequence whatsoever

فيبدو أنه ليس هناك أي عواقب

for attacks against humanitarian aid workers.

للهجمات التي ترتكب ضد عمال الإغاثة الانسانية.

After my release, I was told not to seek any form of justice.

بعد إطلاق سراحي، أَُبلغت بأن لا أسعى للحصول على أي نوع من العدالة.

It won't do you any good, that's what I was told.

قيل لي إن هذا لن يفيدك على الإطلاق.

Plus, you're going to put in danger the life of other colleagues.

فضلا عن ذلك، فأنت ستعرض حياة الزملاء الآخرين للخطر

It took me years to see the sentencing

استغرق الأمر عدة سنوات لأرى حكما

of three people associated with my kidnapping,

يصدر على ثلاثة ضالعين في عملية إختطافي،

but this was the exception.

ولكن كان هذا هو الإستثناء.

There was no justice for any of the humanitarian aid workers

فلم يمكن تحقيق العدالة لأي من عمال الإغاثة الإنسانية

killed or abducted in Chechnya between '95 and '99,

الذين قتلوا أو أختطفوا في الشيشان في الفترة ما بين عامي 95 و 99،

and it's the same all over the world.

والأمر نفسه ينطبق في جميع أنحاء العالم.

This is unacceptable.

هذا أمر غير مقبول.

This is inexcusable.

ولا مبرر له.

Attacks on humanitarian aid workers are war crimes in international law.

الهجمات التي يتعرض لها عمال الإغاثة هي جرائم حرب بموجب القانون الدولي.

Those crimes should not go unpunished.

لاينبغي ان تفلت هذه الجرائم من العقاب.

We must end this cycle of impunity.

لابد من كسر دائرة الحصانة هذه.

We must consider that those attacks against humanitarian aid workers

لابد من أن نأخذ في الاعتبار أن تلك الهجمات ضد عمال الإغاثة الإنسانية

are attacks against humanity itself.

هي هجمات ضد الانسانية نفسها.

That makes me furious.

وهذا يجعلني في ثورة من الغضب.

I know I'm very lucky compared to the refugees I work for.

أنا ادرك كم أنا محظوظ، مقارنة باللاجئين الذين أعمل لمساعدتهم.

I don't know what it is to have seen my whole town destroyed.

لا أدري ما الداعي لرؤية مدينتي بأكملها تتعرض للدمار.

I don't know what it is to have seen my relatives shot in front of me.

لا أدري ما الداعي لرؤية اقاربي يطلق عليهم النار أمام عيناي.

I don't know what it is to lose the protection of my country.

لا أدري لماذا أفقد حماية بلدي لي.

I also know that I'm very lucky compared to other hostages.

أنا ادرك أيضا كم أنا محظوظ مقارنة بالرهائن الآخرين.

Four days before my eventful release, four hostages were beheaded

قبل أربعة ايام من إطلاق سراحي، تم قطع رؤوس أربعة من الرهائن

a few miles away from where I was kept in captivity.

على بعد أميال قليلة من المكان الذي احتجزت فيه.

Why them?

لماذا هم؟

Why am I here today?

لماذا أنا هنا اليوم؟

No easy answer.

ليست هناك إجابة سهلة.

I was received with a lot of support that I got from my relatives,

تلقيت الكثير من الدعم من اقاربي،

from colleagues, from friends, from people I didn't know.

من زملائي، ومن أصدقائي، ومن أناس لا أعرفهم .

They have helped me over the years to come out of the darkness.

ساعدوني على مدار السنوات على الخروج من الظلام.

Not everyone was treated with the same attention.

لم يحظ الكثيرون بنفس القدر من الإهتمام.

How many of my colleagues, after a traumatic incident,

كم من زملائي، الذين تعرضوا لتجارب صادمة،

took their own life?

أقدموا على الانتحار؟

I can count nine that I knew personally.

يمكنني أن احصي تسعة عرفتهم شخصيا.

How many of my colleagues went through a difficult divorce

كم من زملائي مروا بتجربة طلاق مؤلمة

after a traumatic experience

بعد تجربة مرعبة

because they could not explain anything anymore to their spouse?

لانهم لم يعودوا قادرين على تفسير أي شيء لأزواجهن أو زوجاتهم ؟

I've lost that count.

لم أعد قادرا على إحصاء عددهم.

There is a price for this type of life.

هناك ثمن باهظ لمثل هذا النوع من الحياة.

In Russia, all war monuments have this beautiful inscription at the top.

في روسيا، نقشت هذه العبارة الجميلة على كافة مواقع النصب التذكاري.

It says, (In Russian)

تقول ( بالروسية)

"No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten."

"لا ننسى أحدا، ولاننسى شيئا."

I do not forget my lost colleagues.

أنا لا انسى من فقدت من الزملاء.

I cannot forget anything.

لا يمكنني أن انسى اي شيء.

I call on you to remember their dedication

وانا أدعوكم لتتذكروا تفانيهم

and demand that humanitarian aid workers around the world

وأن تطالبوا بأن يحظى عمال الإغاثة الإنسانية في أنحاء العالم

be better protected.

بقدر أكبر من الحماية.

We should not let that light of hope they have brought to be switched off.

لاينبغي أن نترك هذا البصيص من الأمل، الذي جلبوه إلى حياتنا، يخبو وينطفئ.

After my ordeal, a lot of colleagues asked me, "But why do you continue?

بعد الكابوس الذي عشته، يسألني الكثيرون من الزملاء، "لماذا تستمر؟

Why do you do this sort of job?

لماذا يجب أن تعود اليه؟"

Why do you have to go back to it?"

لماذا يجب أن تعود اليه؟"

My answer was very simple:

وكان جوابي بسيطا للغاية:

If I had quit,

إذا تخليت عن عملي،

that would have meant my kidnapper had won.

فإن هذا سيعني أن من خطفوني قد كسبوا.

They would have taken my soul

وانهم تمكنوا من امتلاك روحي

and my humanity.

و إنسانيتي.
