Hans, Ingeborg, Matti, Natalya,

هانس،انگئوبورگ،متی،ناتالیا،

Nancy, Sheryl, Usman, Zarema,

نانسی،شریل،عثمان،زارما

and the list is longer.

لیست طولانی تر از این است.

For many, their existence, their humanity,

برای بسیاری از افراد، موجودیت و انسانیت آنها

has been reduced to statistics,

coldly recorded as "security incidents."

For me, they were colleagues

belonging to that community of humanitarian aid workers

that tried to bring a bit of comfort

to the victims of the wars in Chechnya in the '90s.

They were nurses, logisticians, shelter experts,

And for this service, they were murdered,

their families torn apart,

No one was ever sentenced for these crimes.

I cannot forget them.

They live in me somehow,

آنها هر لحظه به نوعی با من هستند

their memories giving me meaning every day.

و یاد آنها به لحظات زندگی ام معنی می بخشد.

But they are also haunting the dark street of my mind.

اما در عین حال مدام در کوچه تاریک خاطراتم قدم می زنند.

As humanitarian aid workers,

آنها به عنوان امدادگران انجمن‌های بشردوستانه

they made the choice to be at the side of the victim,

تصمیم گرفتند در کنار قربانیان باشند

to provide some assistance, some comfort, some protection,

تا به آنها یاری رسانده و امنیت و آرامش برایشان ایجاد کنند،

but when they needed protection themselves,

اما وقتی خودشون نیاز به محافظت داشتن

it wasn't there.

When you see the headlines of your newspaper these days

این روزها وقتی به تیتر روزنامه ها

with the war in Iraq or in Syria --

درباره جنگ عراق یا سوریه نگاه می کنیم

aid worker abducted, hostage executed --

امدادگران ربوده میشوند، گروگانها کشته میشوند--

but who were they?

اما اینها چه کسانی هستند؟

Why were they there?

چرا اونجا بودند؟

What motivated them?

انگیزه‌شون چی بوده؟

How did we become so indifferent to these crimes?

چرا اینقدر نسبت به این جنایات بی تفاوت شده ایم؟

This is why I am here today with you.

امروز برای همین اینجام.

We need to find better ways to remember them.

باید راهی بهتر برای زنده کردن یاد آنها بیابیم.

We also need to explain the key values to which they dedicated their lives.

به علاوه باید به تشریح ارزشهایی که آنها جانشان را برایش دادند، بپردازیم.

We also need to demand justice.

و برای آنها دادخواهی کنیم.

When in '96 I was sent

وقتی سال ۱۹۹۶

by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to the North Caucasus,

از طرف کمسیون ارشد حمایت از پناهندگان به شمال قفقاز اعزام شدم

I knew some of the risks.

با بعضی از خطرات آشنا بودم.

Five colleagues had been killed,

پنج نفر از همکاران قبلا کشته شده بودن

three had been seriously injured,

سه نفر به شدت مجروح شده بودن

seven had already been taken hostage.

هفت نفر هم گروگان گرفته شده بودن.

So we were careful.

برای همین محتاط بودیم.

We were using armored vehicles, decoy cars,

برای همین از وسایل نقلیه مسلح ، ماشین های گشت

changing patterns of travel, changing homes,

تغییر مسیر حرکت و محل اقامت

all sorts of security measures.

و همه نوع اقدامات امنیتی بهره می بردیم.

Yet on a cold winter night of January '98, it was my turn.

با این وجود یکی از شبهای زمستانی ژانویه سال ۹۸، نوبت من شد.

When I entered my flat in Vladikavkaz with a guard,

وقتی همراه محافظم به آپارتمانم در ولادی‌قفقاز وارد شدم

we were surrounded by armed men.

یه سری افراد مسلح ما رو محاصره کردن.

They took the guard, they put him on the floor,

محافظ را گرفتند و روی زمین خواباندند

they beat him up in front of me,

جلوی چشمام زدنش

tied him, dragged him away.

بستنش و کشیدن بردن.

I was handcuffed, blindfolded, and forced to kneel,

دستها و چشمهام بسته بودن و روی زانو نشسته بودم

as the silencer of a gun pressed against my neck.

همون موقعه صداخفه‌کن اسلحه را گذاشت پشت گردنم

When it happens to you,

در این شرایط

there is no time for thinking, no time for praying.

فرصتی برای فکر کردن یا دعا کردن ندارید.

My brain went on automatic,

ذهنم به شکل خودکار

rewinding quickly the life I'd just left behind.

تمام لحظات زندگی ام رو جلوی چشمام آورد.

It took me long minutes to figure out

چند دقیقه ای طول کشید تا اینکه فهمیدم

that those masked men there were not there to kill me,

اون افراد نقاب دار برای کشتن من نیامدن

but that someone, somewhere, had ordered my kidnapping.

اونها از یه جایی دستور دزدیدن منو داشتن.

Then a process of dehumanization started that day.

بعد همان روز پروسه غیرانسانی شروع شد.

I was no more than just a commodity.

من براشون حکم یه شی را داشتم.

I normally don't talk about this,

معمولا درباره این موضوع حرف نمیزنم

but I'd like to share a bit with you some of those 317 days of captivity.

اما می خوام کمی از تجربه اون ۳۱۷ روز اسارتم بگم.

I was kept in an underground cellar,

در یک سرداب زیرزمینی نگه داری میشدم

total darkness,

تاریکی مطلق،

for 23 hours and 45 minutes every day,

هر روز،۲۳ ساعت و ۴۵ دقیقه اونجا بودم.

and then the guards would come, normally two.

بعدش معمولا دو نگهبان می آمدند

They would bring a big piece of bread,

a bowl of soup, and a candle.

That candle would burn for 15 minutes,

15 minutes of precious light,

and then they would take it away, and I returned to darkness.

I was chained by a metal cable to my bed.

I could do only four small steps.

I always dreamt of the fifth one.

And no TV, no radio, no newspaper, no one to talk to.

I had no towel, no soap, no toilet paper,

نه حوله ای، نه صابونی و نه دستمال توالتی.

just two metal buckets open, one for water, for one waste.

اونجا فقط دو تا سطل فلزی در باز بود، یکی برای آب، یکی هم برای فضولات.

Can you imagine that mock execution can be a pastime for guards

این نوع تحقیرها برای نگهبانها حکم سرگرمی داشت.

when they are sadistic or when they are just bored or drunk?

خصوصا وقتی طرف دچار دیگرآزاری بود یا وقتی حوصله‌اش سررفته بود یا مست بود.

We are breaking my nerves very slowly.

اعصابم ذره ذره خرد می شد.

Isolation and darkness are particularly difficult to describe.

توصیف تنهایی و تاریکی کار خیلی دشواری است

How do you describe nothing?

مگر میشه "هیچ " را توصیف کرد؟

There are no words for the depths of loneliness I reached

هیچ کلمه ای برای توصیف عمق تنهایی ام،

in that very thin border between sanity and madness.

در آن مرز باریک میان هشیاری و دیوانگی پیدا نمی کنم.

In the darkness, sometimes I played imaginary games of checkers.

گاهی در آن تاریکی تو خیالم چکرز بازی می کردم

I would start with the black,

با مهره سیاه شروع می کردم

play with the white,

بعدش با سفید

back to the black trying to trick the other side.

دوباره مهره مشکی و سعی می کردم سفیدها رو ببرم.

I don't play checkers anymore.

دیگه چکرز بازی نمی کنم.

I was tormented by the thoughts of my family and my colleague, the guard, Edik.

فکرم مدام با یادآوری خانواده و همکاران و محاظفم، ادیک، عذابم می داد.

I didn't know what had happened to him.

نمی دونستم چه بلایی سرش اومده.

I was trying not to think,

برای اینکه از دست فکر کردن خلاص بشم

I tried to fill up my time

سعی می کردم وقتم رو

by doing all sorts of physical exercise on the spot.

با نرمش در اون چند قدم پر کنم.

I tried to pray, I tried all sorts of memorization games.

خودم رو با دعا و انواع بازی های فکری مشغول می کردم.

But darkness also creates images and thoughts that are not normal.

ولی تاریکی در ذهن تصاویر و افکاری بوجود میاره که عادی نیستن.

One part of your brain wants you to resist, to shout, to cry,

یک بخش از مغزت میخواد مقاومت کنه و فریاد بزنه

and the other part of the brain orders you to shut up

و بخش دیگر مغز دستور میده که "ساکت باش

and just go through it.

و با این شرایط بساز".

It's a constant internal debate; there is no one to arbitrate.

یک مناظره دائمی درونی است. بدون داور و قاضی.

Once a guard came to me, very aggressively, and he told me,

یک بار یکی از نگهبانها با پرخاش آمد و بهم گفت:

"Today you're going to kneel and beg for your food."

" امروز برای غذا باید زانو بزنی و التماس کنی."

I wasn't in a good mood, so I insulted him.

تو شرایط روحی خوبی نبودم. بهش فحش دادم.

I insulted his mother, I insulted his ancestors.

به مادرش و همه کس و کارش فحش دادم.

The consequence was moderate: he threw the food into my waste.

نتیجه خیلی ساده بود: غذا رو ریخت تو سطل فضولات.

The day after he came back with the same demand.

روز بعد دوباره اومد. دوباره همون درخواست.

He got the same answer,

منم همون جواب رو دادم،

which had the same consequence.

جواب کار همون بود.

Four days later, the body was full of pain.

بعد از چهار روز تمام تنم درد می کرد.

I didn't know hunger hurt so much when you have so little.

نمی دونستم گرسنگی، وقتی که غذا اونقدر کمه، چقدر می‌تونه دردناک باشه.

So when the guards came down,

برای همین دفعه بعد که آمد،

I knelt.

زانو زدم.

I begged for my food.

برای غذا التماس کردم.

Submission was the only way for me to make it to another candle.

تسلیم شدن تنها راه رسیدن دوباره به شمع بود.

After my kidnapping,

بعد از دزدیده شدنم،

I was transferred from North Ossetia to Chechnya,

از اوستیای شمالی به چچن منتقل شدم.

three days of slow travel in the trunks of different cars,

سه روز در صندوق عقب چند ماشین در راه بودم،

and upon arrival, I was interrogated

به محض رسیدن، تا ۱۱ روز

for 11 days by a guy called Ruslan.

شخصی به نام روسلان بازجویی ام کرد.

The routine was always the same:

روند کار تقریبا هر روز یک جور بود:

a bit more light, 45 minutes.

کمی نور بیشتر، ۴۵ دقیقه.

He would come down to the cellar,

به زیرزمین می آمد.

he would ask the guards to tie me on the chair,

به نگهبان ها می گفت من را به صندلی ببندند.

and he would turn on the music loud.

و صدای موسیقی را زیاد می کرد.

And then he would yell questions.

بعد با فریاد زدن سوال می کرد.

He would scream. He would beat me.

فریاد می کشید. کتکم میزد.

I'll spare you the details.

وارد جزییاتش نمی شم.

There are many questions I could not understand,

خیلی از سوال ها را نمی فهمیدم.

and there are some questions I did not want to understand.

سوال های دیگری هم بود که اصلا نمی خواستم بفهمم.

The length of the interrogation was the duration of the tape:

مدت زمان بازجویی درست به اندازه نوار بود:

15 songs, 45 minutes.

۱۵ آهنگ، کلا ۴۵ دقیقه.

I would always long for the last song.

همیشه منتظر آهنگ آخری بودم.

On one day, one night in that cellar, I don't know what it was,

نمی دونم یه روز بود یا یه شب

I heard a child crying above my head,

صدای بچه ای رو شنیدم که بالای سرم گریه می کرد.

a boy, maybe two or three years old.

صدای یه پسر بچه دو یا سه ساله.

Footsteps, confusion, people running.

صدای پا می اومد،آدم‌ها می دویدند، خیلی آشفته بود.

So when Ruslan came the day after,

برای همین وقتی روز بعد روسلان آمد

before he put the first question to me,

قبل از اینکه سوال اول را بپرسه،

I asked him, "How is your son today? Is he feeling better?"

ازش پرسیدم"حال پسرت امروز چطوره؟بهتره؟"

Ruslan was taken by surprise.

خیلی جا خورد.

He was furious that the guards may have leaked some details

عصبی شد. فکر می کرد نگهبان‌ ها دهن لقی کرده اند

about his private life.

و از زندگی خصوصیش به من گفته اند.

I kept talking about NGOs supplying medicines to local clinics

درباره ان‌ جی‌ او هایی که به کلینیک‌ های محلی دارو می‌دهند برایش گفتم

that may help his son to get better.

که ممکن بود بتوانند حال پسرش را بهتر کنند.

And we talked about education, we talked about families.

درباره آموزش و خانواده حرف زدیم.

He talked to me about his children.

او از بچه‌ هایش برایم گفت.

I talked to him about my daughters.

من از دخترم برایش گفتم.

And then he'd talk about guns, about cars, about women,

بعد او درباره اسلحه، درباره اتومبیل و درباره زن حرف زد،

and I had to talk about guns, about cars, about women.

و من هم باید درباره اسلحه و ماشین و زنان حرف می‌ زدم.

And we talked until the last song on the tape.

تا آخرین آهنگ نوار صحبت کردیم.

Ruslan was the most brutal man I ever met.

روسلان بی‌ رحم‌ ترین آدمی بود که در عمرم می‌ دیدم.

He did not touch me anymore.

دیگر کتکم نزد.

He did not ask any other questions.

دیگر سوالی نپرسید.

I was no longer just a commodity.

دیگر در چشمش حکم یک شی را نداشتم.

Two days after, I was transferred to another place.

دو روز بعد من را به جای دیگری بردند.

There, a guard came to me, very close -- it was quite unusual --

آنجا یکی از نگهبان ها به من نزدیک شد خیلی نزدیک--خیلی عجیب بود--

and he said with a very soft voice, he said,

و خیلی آرام گفت:

"I'd like to thank you

می خواهم ازت تشکر کنم

for the assistance your organization provided my family

به خاطر کمک های سازمان شما به خانواده ام

when we were displaced in nearby Dagestan."

وقتی که در داغستان آواره شده بودیم.

What could I possibly reply?

چه جوابی می توانستم بدهم؟

It was so painful. It was like a blade in the belly.

خیلی دردناک بود. مثل چاقویی بود که وارد شکمت بشه.

It took me weeks of internal thinking to try to reconcile

چند هفته طول کشید تا بتوانم در ذهنم هضم کنم

the good reasons we had to assist that family

اهداف مثبتی را که برای کمک به آن خانواده داشتیم از یک طرف

and the soldier of fortune he became.

با مزدوری که او از آب درآمده بود، از طرف دیگر.

He was young, he was shy.

او جوان بود و خجالتی.

I never saw his face.

He probably meant well.

احتمالا قصدش مثبت بوده.

But in those 15 seconds,

he made me question everything we did,

He made me think also how they see us.

Until then, I had assumed that they know why we are there

One cannot assume this.

Well, explaining why we do this is not that easy,

even to our closest relatives.

We are not perfect, we are not superior,

ما نه عالی هستیم و نه فوق العاده،

we are not the world's fire brigade,

we are not superheroes,

ابرقهرمان هم نیستیم،

we don't stop wars,

پایان دهنده جنگ نیستیم،

we know that humanitarian response is not a substitute for political solution.

می دانیم که راهکارهای بشردوستانه جایگزین راه حل های سیاسی نیست.

Yet we do this because one life matters.

ولی این کار را میکنیم، چون حتی یک جان هم ارزش دارد.

Sometimes that's the only difference you make --

گاهی این تنها کاری است که می کنیم--

one individual, one family, a small group of individuals --

یک نفر، یک خانواده، گروه کوچکی از افراد--

and it matters.

و این اهمیت دارد.

When you have a tsunami, an earthquake or a typhoon,

در زمان وقوع سونامی، زمین لرزه و یا طوفان

you see teams of rescuers coming from all over the world,

می بینید که گروه های نجات از سراسر دنیا می آیند،

searching for survivors for weeks.

و تا هفته ها به دنبال بازماندگان می گردند،

Why? Nobody questions this.

چرا؟ هیچ کس این را نمی پرسد.

Every life matters,

هر جانی ارزش دارد،

or every life should matter.

و یا باید ارزش داشته باشد.

This is the same for us when we help refugees,

برای ما فرقی ندارد، وقتی به پناهجویان کمک می کنیم

people displaced within their country by conflict, or stateless persons,

یا کسانی که به خاطر جنگ در کشور خود آواره شده اند یا آدم های بی کشور،

I know many people,

افراد زیادی را می شناسم

when they are confronted by overwhelming suffering,

که وقتی با دردی خانمان سوز مواجه میشوند

they feel powerless and they stop there.

احساس ناتوانی و بیچارگی می کنند و همانجا متوقف می شوند.

It's a pity, because there are so many ways people can help.

این باعث تاسف است. چون راه های زیادی برای کمک کردن هست.

We don't stop with that feeling.

ما در این شرایط از پا در نمی آییم.

We try to do whatever we can to provide some assistance,

هرکاری از دستمان برآید برای کمک انجام میدهیم.

some protection, some comfort.

کمی حمایت، مقداری آسایش.

We have to.

مجبوریم.

We can't do otherwise.

نمیشه بی تفاوت بود.

It's what makes us feel, I don't know, simply human.

این باعث میشود احساس داشته باشیم، چه می دانم، فقط انسان باشیم.

That's a picture of me the day of my release.

این منم در روز آزادی ام.

Months after my release, I met the then-French prime minister.

چند ماه بعد از آزادی، با نخست وزیر وقت فرانسه دیدار کردم.

The second thing he told me:

دومین چیزی که بهم گفت:

"You were totally irresponsible to go to the North Caucasus.

"رفتنت به شمال قفقاز بی مسئولیتی محض بود،

You don't know how many problems you've created for us."

نمی دونی چقدر دردسر برای ما درست کردی"

It was a short meeting.

ملاقات کوتاهی بود.

(Laughter)

I think helping people in danger is responsible.

به نظر من کمک به افرادی که در خطر هستند یک وظیفه است.

In that war, that nobody seriously wanted to stop,

در جنگی که هیچکس به شکل جدی نمی خواست پایان بگیرد

and we have many of these today,

و امروز هم با انواعش سر و کار داریم

bringing some assistance to people in need and a bit of protection

کمک رسانی به افراد محتاج و حفاظت از آنها

was not just an act of humanity,

فقط یک عمل بشر دوستانه نبود،

it was making a real difference for the people.

بلکه ایجاد یک تغییر حقیقی در زندگی آدمها بود.

Why could he not understand this?

چرا نمی توانست این را بفهمه؟

We have a responsibility to try.

ما وظیفه داریم که تلاش کنیم.

You've heard about that concept: Responsibility to Protect.

حتما این اصطلاح رو شنیدید: حفاظت از دیگران، وظیفه ماست.

Outcomes may depend on various parameters.

ولی نتیجه این عمل به شرایط متعددی بستگی داره،

We may even fail, but there is worse than failing --

ممکنه حتی شکست بخوریم اما از این بدتر هم هست--

it's not even trying when we can.

و آن کاری نکردن در زمانی است که می توانیم.

Well, if you are met this way, if you sign up for this sort of job,

اگر در راه قدم گذاشتید، اگر این کار را انتخاب کردید،

your life is going to be full of joy and sadness,

زندگی تان پر از شادی و غم خواهد بود

because there are a lot of people we cannot help,

چون افراد زیادی هستند که نمی توانیم کمکشان کنیم،

a lot of people we cannot protect, a lot of people we did not save.

نمی توانیم محافظتشان کنیم خیلی ها را نتوانستیم نجات دهیم.

I call them my ghost,

and by having witnessed their suffering from close,

you take a bit of that suffering on yourself.

Many young humanitarian workers

go through their first experience with a lot of bitterness.

اولین تجربشون، تجربه خیلی تلخ است.

They are thrown into situations where they are witness,

but they are powerless to bring any change.

اما توان ایجاد تغییر ندارند.

They have to learn to accept it

and gradually turn this into positive energy.

It's difficult.

کار سختی است.

Many don't succeed,

but for those who do, there is no other job like this.

You can see the difference you make every day.

Humanitarian aid workers know the risk they are taking

امدادگران خطراتی که به جان می خرند را می شناسند

in conflict areas or in post-conflict environments,

در مناطق درگیر جنگ یا جاهایی که تازه جنگ تمام شده.

yet our life, our job, is becoming increasingly life-threatening,

با این حال، تهدید علیه زندگی و حرفه ما هر روز بیش از قبل می شود.

and the sanctity of our life is fading.

و حرمت کار و زندگی ما کم کم دارد از بین میرود.

Do you know that since the millennium,

the number of attacks on humanitarian aid workers has tripled?

2013 broke new records:

155 colleagues killed,

171 seriously wounded,

134 abducted.

So many broken lives.

Until the beginning of the civil war in Somalia in the late '80s,

تا زمان وقوع جنگ داخلی در سومالی در دهه ۸۰ میلادی،

humanitarian aid workers were sometimes victims

امدادگران گاهی

of what we call collateral damages,

قربانی چیزی می شدند که به آن آسیب های موازی می گوییم.

but by and large we were not the target of these attacks.

This has changed.

24 colleagues were killed.

۲۴ نفر از همکارانم کشته شدند.

Gone are the days when a U.N. blue flag or a Red Cross

گذشت آن زمانی که پرچم آبی سازمان ملل متحد یا صلیب سرخ

would automatically protect us.

به شکل خودبه خود از ما حفاظت می کرد.

Criminal groups and some political groups

گروه های جنایتکار و برخی گروه های سیاسی

have cross-fertilized over the last 20 years,

طی ۲۰ سال گذشته با هم همدست شدند

and they've created these sort of hybrids

و این قبیل موقعیت های دوگانه را پدید آورده اند

with whom we have no way of communicating.

که به هیچ عنوان نمی توانیم با آن ها ارتباط برقرار کنیم.

Humanitarian principles are tested, questioned, and often ignored,

اصول انسان دوستانه مورد آزمایش قرار گرفته، زیر سوال رفته و نا دیده گرفته شده.

but perhaps more importantly, we have abandoned the search for justice.

اما از همه مهمتر ما دیگر به دنبال جست و جوی عدالت نیستیم.

There seems to be no consequence whatsoever

به نظر می رسد

for attacks against humanitarian aid workers.

حمله به فعالان بشردوست، اصلا و ابدا هیچ عواقبی در پی ندارد.

After my release, I was told not to seek any form of justice.

بعد از آزادی، به من گفته شد به هیچ وجه قضیه را پیگیری قضایی نکنم.

It won't do you any good, that's what I was told.

گفتن: فایده ای نخواهد داشت.

Plus, you're going to put in danger the life of other colleagues.

به علاوه اینجوری زندگی همکاران دیگر را هم به خطر می اندازی.

It took me years to see the sentencing

سال ها طول کشید تا صدور حکم

of three people associated with my kidnapping,

برای سه نفر از کسانی که در ربودنم نقش داشتن را ببینم.

but this was the exception.

اما این مورد یک استثنا بود.

There was no justice for any of the humanitarian aid workers

هیچ گونه عدالتی برای امدادگرانی که

killed or abducted in Chechnya between '95 and '99,

بین سالهای ۹۵ تا ۹۹ در چچن کشته یا گروگان گرفته شدند صورت نگرفت.

and it's the same all over the world.

و این در همه جای دنیا مصداق دارد.

This is unacceptable.

این غیر قابل قبول است.

This is inexcusable.

هیچ عذری ندارد.

Attacks on humanitarian aid workers are war crimes in international law.

طبق قوانین بین المللی حمله به فعالان کارهای بشردوستانه جنایت جنگی محسوب میشود.

Those crimes should not go unpunished.

این جنایات نباید بدون پاسخ بماند..

We must end this cycle of impunity.

چرخه مصونیت این جنایات باید پایان یابد

We must consider that those attacks against humanitarian aid workers

باید اینگونه در نظر گرفت که حمله به فعالان کمک های بشر دوستانه

are attacks against humanity itself.

حمله به اصل انسانیت است.

That makes me furious.

این من را برمی آشوبد.

I know I'm very lucky compared to the refugees I work for.

در مقایسه با تمام پناهندگانی که برایشان کار میکنم، من خیلی خوش شانسم

I don't know what it is to have seen my whole town destroyed.

من تصوری از صحنه ویرانی کامل شهرم ندارم،

I don't know what it is to have seen my relatives shot in front of me.

نمی دانم شلیک به اعضای خانواده ام در برابر چشمم، چه حسی دارد،

I don't know what it is to lose the protection of my country.

نمی دانم از دست دادن حمایت از سوی کشورم چیست.

I also know that I'm very lucky compared to other hostages.

این را هم می دانم که در مقایسه با گروگانهای دیگر هم خیلی خوش شانس هستم.

Four days before my eventful release, four hostages were beheaded

چهار روز قبل از آزادی پرماجرای من، چهار نفر از گروگانها گردن زده شدند

a few miles away from where I was kept in captivity.

در چند مایلی جایی که من را نگه می داشتند.

Why them?

چرا آنها؟

Why am I here today?

من امروز چرا اینجا هستم؟

No easy answer.

جواب ساده ای نداره.

I was received with a lot of support that I got from my relatives,

من از طرف خانواده ام حمایت زیادی دریافت کردم.

from colleagues, from friends, from people I didn't know.

از طرف همکاران، دوستانم، و حتی کسانی که نمی شناسم.

They have helped me over the years to come out of the darkness.

در طی این سالها، برای بیرون آمدن از تاریکی، آنها کمکم کردند.

Not everyone was treated with the same attention.

هر کسی این همه توجه و مراقبت را دریافت نمی کند.

How many of my colleagues, after a traumatic incident,

چند نفر از همکارام بعد از حادثه ای دردناک

took their own life?

دست به خودکشی زدند؟

I can count nine that I knew personally.

حداقل نه نفر از آنها را شخصا می شناختم.

How many of my colleagues went through a difficult divorce

چند نفر از آنها بعد از حادثه ای دردناک

after a traumatic experience

طلاق گرفتند؟

because they could not explain anything anymore to their spouse?

چون دیگر نمی توانستند چیزی را به همسرشان توضیح دهند.

I've lost that count.

شمارش از دستم در رفته.

There is a price for this type of life.

این هزینه این نوع زندگی است.

In Russia, all war monuments have this beautiful inscription at the top.

در روسیه بالای تمام نمادهای یاد بود جنگ این جمله زیبا نوشته شده:

که می گوید، ( به زبان روسی )

"No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten."

"هیچ کس فراموش نمی شود، هیچ چیز فراموش نمی شود."

I do not forget my lost colleagues.

من هرگز همکارانی که از دست داده ام را فراموش نمی کنم.

I cannot forget anything.

نمی تونم فراموش کنم.

I call on you to remember their dedication

از شما میخواهم که از خودگذشتگی آنها را به خاطر بسپارید

and demand that humanitarian aid workers around the world

و تلاش کنید تا تمام فعالان در سرتا سر دنیا

be better protected.

بهتر محافظت بشوند.

We should not let that light of hope they have brought to be switched off.

نباید بگذاریم نور امیدی که آنها به ارمغان آوردن، خاموش شود.

After my ordeal, a lot of colleagues asked me, "But why do you continue?

بعد این تجربه تلخ، بسیاری از همکارانم از من پرسیدند "چرا هنوز ادامه میدی؟"

Why do you do this sort of job?

چرا این کار را میکنی؟

Why do you have to go back to it?"

چرا میخواهی برگردی سر کارت؟

My answer was very simple:

جواب من خیلی ساده بود:

If I had quit,

اگر کنار کشیده بودم

that would have meant my kidnapper had won.

این بدین معنی بود که ربایندگانم پیروز شدن

They would have taken my soul

بعنی آن ها روح من

and my humanity.

و انسانیتم را برده بودند.
