In mythological ancient Greece,

soaring above Crete on wings made from wax and feathers,

Icarus, the son of Daedalus, defied the laws of both man and nature.

Ignoring the warnings of his father, he rose higher and higher.

To witnesses on the ground, he looked like a god,

and as he peered down from above, he felt like one, too.

But, in mythological ancient Greece,

the line that separated god from man was absolute

and the punishment for mortals who attempted to cross it was severe.

Such was the case for Icarus and Daedalus.

イカロスとダイダロスの場合も そうだったのです

Years before Icarus was born,

イカロスが生まれる何年も前

his father Daedalus was highly regarded as a genius inventor,

彼の父 ダイダロスは 天才発明家として

craftsman,

職人として

and sculptor in his homeland of Athens.

また彫刻家として 故郷アテネで名を馳せていました

He invented carpentry and all the tools used for it.

彼は大工という職を創案し そのための道具を発明しました

He designed the first bathhouse

彼は最初の公衆浴場や

and the first dance floor.

舞踏場を設計しました

He made sculptures so lifelike that Hercules mistook them for actual men.

Though skilled and celebrated, Daedalus was egotistical and jealous.

ダイダロスは腕利きで 高名ながらも 傲慢で嫉妬深くもありました

Worried that his nephew was a more skillful craftsman,

Daedalus murdered him.

ダイダロスは彼を殺しました

As punishment, Daedalus was banished from Athens and made his way to Crete.

罰として アテネから追放されたダイダロスは クレタ島に向かいました

Preceded by his storied reputation,

それまでの評判のおかげで

Daedalus was welcomed with open arms by Crete's King Minos.

ダイダロスはクレタの王ミノスに 心から歓迎されました

There, acting as the palace technical advisor,

Daedalus continued to push the boundaries.

For the king's children,

he made mechanically animated toys that seemed alive.

He invented the ship's sail and mast, which gave humans control over the wind.

With every creation, Daedalus challenged human limitations

that had so far kept mortals separate from gods,

until finally, he broke right through.

King Minos's wife, Pasiphaë, had been cursed by the god Poseidon

ミノス王の妻 パーシパエーは 神ポセイドンの呪いで

to fall in love with the king's prized bull.

Under this spell, she asked Daedalus to help her seduce it.

呪いにかかった彼女は 牡牛の気を引くため ダイダロスに助けを請いました

With characteristic audacity, he agreed.

大胆な性格の彼は 引き受けました

Daedalus constructed a hollow wooden cow

ダイダロスは木を使って 中が空洞の牝牛を作りました

so realistic that it fooled the bull.

本物そっくりの出来だったので 相手の牡牛は騙されました

With Pasiphaë hiding inside Daedalus's creation,

ダイダロスの作品の内部に潜んだ パーシパエーは

she conceived and gave birth to the half-human half-bull minotaur.

妊娠して 半人半牛の ミノタウロスを産みました

This, of course, enraged the king

当然これに ミノス王は激怒し

who blamed Daedalus for enabling such a horrible perversion of natural law.

自然の理から こんなにもひどく逸脱した ダイダロスの非を責めました

As punishment, Daedalus was forced to construct an inescapable labyrinth

罰としてダイダロスは 脱出不能の迷宮の建造を命じられました

beneath the palace for the minotaur.

宮殿の地下にミノタウロスを 閉じ込めておくためです

When it was finished, Minos then imprisoned Daedalus

それが終わると ミノス王は ダイダロスと

and his only son Icarus

彼の一人息子 イカロスを 牢に入れました

within the top of the tallest tower on the island

牢は島にある最も高い塔の てっぺんでした

where they were to remain for the rest of their lives.

そこで彼らは残りの生涯を 過ごすことになったのです

But Daedalus was still a genius inventor.

でもダイダロスは それでも 天才発明家でした

While observing the birds that circled his prison,

the means for escape became clear.

He and Icarus would fly away from their prison

牢から飛び立てばよいのです

as only birds or gods could do.

Using feathers from the flocks that perched on the tower,

塔に止まる鳥の群れから集めた羽と

and the wax from candles,

ろうそくのロウを使って

Daedalus constructed two pairs of giant wings.

ダイダロスは大きな翼を ２組 作りました

As he strapped the wings to his son Icarus,

息子イカロスに その羽を背負わせるとき

he gave a warning:

ダイダロスはこう警告しました

flying too near the ocean would dampen the wings

飛ぶときに 海に近づきすぎると 翼が湿ってしまって

and make them too heavy to use.

重くて使い物にならなくなるだろう

Flying too near the sun,

太陽に近づきすぎると

the heat would melt the wax and the wings would disintegrate.

熱がロウを溶かして 翼はバラバラになってしまうだろう

In either case, they surely would die.

どちらの場合も 死んでしまう

Therefore, the key to their escape would be in keeping to the middle.

だから うまく逃げるためには 中間を飛び続けることが大事だ

With the instructions clear, both men leapt from the tower.

指示をはっきり伝えたところで ２人とも塔から飛び立ちました

They were the first mortals ever to fly.

彼らは空を飛んだ 初めての人間でした

While Daedalus stayed carefully to the midway course,

ダイダロスは慎重に 中間の航路を保ちましたが

Icarus was overwhelmed with the ecstasy of flight

イカロスは飛ぶことの快感に 我を忘れてしまい

and overcome with the feeling of divine power that came with it.

神の力を得たとの思いに 取りつかれてしまいました

Daedalus could only watch in horror as Icarus ascended higher and higher,

イカロスがどんどん高く上昇していくのを ダイダロスは恐怖の眼差しで見るよりほかなく

powerless to change his son's dire fate.

息子の悲惨な運命を変える力は 彼にはなかったのです

When the heat from the sun melted the wax on his wings,

イカロスの翼のロウを 太陽の熱が溶かし

Icarus fell from the sky.

彼は墜落しました

Just as Daedalus had many times ignored

ダイダロスが 人間でありながら

the consequences of defying the natural laws of mortal men

身の程をわきまえず 自然の理を侵すとどうなるかを

in the service of his ego,

何度も何度も無視したのと まさに同じように

Icarus was also carried away by his own hubris.

イカロスもまた自身の傲慢さにより 命を奪われたのです

In the end,

しまいには２人とも

both men paid for their departure from the path of moderation dearly,

節度ある生き方から逸脱したことの 高い対価を払う結果となったわけです

Icarus with his life

イカロスは命をもって

and Daedalus with his regret.

そしてダイダロスは後悔をもって
