The moon goddess, Ix Chel, patiently watched a spider at work.

خواوەندی مانگ، ئیشێل، سەیری جاڵجاڵۆکەیەکی دەکرد لە کار.

She could make use of it skills, she thought.

دەیتوانی سوود لە تواناکانی وەربگرێت، وای بیرکردەوە.

Through careful observation and imitation, she soon became a skilled weaver.

لە ڕێگەی تێبینی ورد و سەیرکردنەوە، ئەو بوو بە جادووگەرێکی بەتوانا.

The sun god, Kinich Ahau, was impressed with her work,

خواوەندی خۆر، کینیش ئاو، بە کارەکانی سەرسام بوو،

and admired her from afar.

و لە دوورەوە ڕێزی لێ دەنا.

But the goddess’ grandfather was very possessive

بەڵام باپیرەی خواوەندەکە زۆر پارێزەرانە بوو

and would not let the sun god anywhere near his beloved granddaughter.

و نەیدەهێشت خواوەندی خۆر لە کچەزاکەی نزیک بێتەوە.

To get past the grandfather, the sun god disguised himself

تا لە باپیرە ڕزگاری تێپەڕێت، خواوەندی خۆر خۆی گۆڕی

as a hummingbird.

بۆ باڵندەی گیزەکەر.

As he took a drink of tobacco flower honey,

کاتێک هەنگونی گوڵی تۆباکۆی خواردەوە،

the moon goddess spotted him and asked her grandfather

خواوەندی مانگ بینی و داوای لە باپیرەی کرد

to capture the bird for her.

باڵندەکە بگرێت بۆی.

The grandfather shot the disguised sun god with a blow dart, stunning him.

باپیرەکە خواوەندی خۆری بە تیرێکی خێرا خستەخوارەوە، گێژی کرد.

Ix Chel nursed the wounded bird back to health,

ئیشێل باڵندە بریندارەکەی ئاگالێبوو تا چاک بووەوە،

and soon, he was able to spread his wings and fly again.

و دواتر، دەیتوانی باڵەکانی بکاتەوە و بفڕێت.

He transformed back into the sun god and invited the moon goddess

خۆی گۆڕیەوە بۆ خواوەندی خۆر و بانگهێشتی خواوەندی مانگی کرد

to escape with him.

تا لەگەڵی ڕابکات.

The two rowed away in a canoe,

هەردووکیان بە بەلەمێک ڕۆیشتن،

but the grandfather called upon the powerful storm god

بەڵام باپیرەکە بانگی خواوەندی زریانی کرد

to help him stop them.

تا یارمەتی بدات ڕایانبگرێت.

Sensing danger, the moon goddess jumped from the canoe into the water below

هەستی بە مەترسی کرد، خواوەندی مانگ خۆی خستە ناو ئاوەکەوە

and transformed into a crab.

و خۆی گۆڕی بۆ قرژاڵ.

But the storm god had already thrown a lightning bolt,

بەڵام خواوەندی زریان بروسکەیەکی هاوێشت،

which hit the crab and pierced her through her heart, killing her.

لە قرژاڵەکەی دا و دڵی بڕی، ئەوی کوشت.

Hundreds and hundreds of dragonflies gathered,

سەدان و سەدان پوشکە بە قنگ کۆبوونەوە،

buzzing songs and fluttering their transparent wings.

گۆرانیان دەوت و باڵە ڕۆشنەکانیان ڕادەچڵەکاند.

They formed a thick, magical cloud over the moon goddess’ body.

هەورێکی تەنکی، جادووییان بەسەر لاشەی خواوەندی مانگ دروست کرد.

For thirteen days the dragonflies cut, cleaned, and hollowed thirteen logs.

بۆ ١٣ ڕۆژ پوشکە بە قنگەکان قەدی ١٣ درەختیان بڕی، خاوێن کردەوە، ناوپۆشیان کرد.

On the thirteenth night, the logs burst open,

لە شەوی ١٣ەمدا قەدی درەختەکە کرایەوە،

and the moon goddess emerged— alive and more brilliant than ever.

و خواوەندی مانگ دروس بوو -- زیندوو و لە هەموو کاتێک زیرەکتر.

The sun god wasted no time in proposing marriage.

خواوەندی خۆر کاتی بەفیڕۆ نەدا و داوای هاوسەرگیری لێکرد.

The moon goddess happily agreed.

خواوەندی مانگ بەخۆشحاڵییەوە ڕازی بوو.

Side-by-side, they were ready to light up the sky with their powerful rays.

پێکەوە، ئامادەبوون ئاسمان ڕووناک بکەنەوە بە تیشکەکانیان.

Unfortunately, the story doesn’t end there.

بەداخەوە، چیڕۆکەکە لێرە بە کۆتا نایەت.

The sun god’s brother visited often.

برای خواوەندی خۆر زوو زوو سەردانی دەکرد.

Sensing he was also in love with Ix Chel, the sun god grew jealous,

هەستی کرد ئەویش ئیشێلی خۆشدەوێ، خواوەندی خۆر زۆر بەخیل بوو،

and began to mistreat her.

و دەستی بە خراپ مامەڵەکردن لەگەڵی.

One day, Ix Chel was sitting on the riverbank,

ڕۆژێکیان، ئیشێل لەسەر لێواری ڕووبارێک دانیشتبوو،

furious at her husband.

لە مێردەکەی توڕە بوو.

A huge bird came gliding down

باڵندەییەکی گەورە هاتە لای

and offered to take her to the high mountain peaks.

و پێی وت دەیبات بۆ لوتکەی چیا بەرزەکان.

To get away from the cruel sun god, she agreed.

بۆ دوورکەوتنەوە لە خواوەندی خۆری دلڕەق، ئەو ڕازی بوو.

There, she met the king of the vultures.

لەوێ، چاوی بە پاشای داڵەکان کەوت.

The vulture king was kind and fun-loving—

پاشای داڵەکان کەسێکی باش و ڕووخۆش بوو --

a much better partner than the violent sun god.

هاوبەشێکی باشتر لە خواوەندی خۆری توندوتیژ.

The moon goddess made a new home with him in the mountains.

خواوەندی مانگ خانووێکی نوێی دروست کرد لەگەڵی لە چیاکان.

When the sun god heard, he was distraught.

کە خواوەندی خۆر زانی، زۆر دڵتەنگ بوو.

He hid inside a deer carcass until a hungry vulture came swooping down,

ئەو لە لاشەی ئاسکێک خۆی حەشاردا تا داڵێکی برسی هاتە خوارەوە،

then hopped onto its back and rode to the mountain kingdom

دوای چووە سەر پشتی و بەرەو شانشینی چیا ڕۆیشت

where the moon goddess now lived with the vulture king.

کە خواوەندی مانگ ئێستا لەگەڵ پاشای داڵەکان لێی دەژیێت.

He begged her to come home with him, apologizing for how he had treated her.

لێی پاڕاییەوە بگەڕێتەوە ماڵەوە لەگەڵی، داوای لێبوردنی لێکرد خراپ مامەڵەی کردووە.

The kind and forgiving goddess took pity on him and agreed to go back.

خواوەندە باش و لێبوردەکە بەزەی پێدا هاتەوە و ڕازی بوو لەگەڵی بگەڕێتەوە.

But Kinich Ahau soon began to show his true nature again.

بەڵام کینیش ئاو دووبارە ڕووی ڕاستەقینەی خۆی نیشانداوە.

He struck her, scarring her face and dimming her bright rays.

ئەو لێیدا، ڕوخساری بریندار کرد و تیشکە ناوازەکەی کز بوو.

Ix Chel flew off into the dark.

ئی شێل فڕی بۆ تاریکایی.

From then on, she vowed to appear only at night.

لەوێ بەدواووە، سوێندی خوارد تەنها شەو خۆی دەربخات.

She befriended the stars, and combined her pale blue rays with their light

هاوڕێیەتی ئەستێرەکانی کرد، و تیشکە شینەکانی لەگەڵ ڕووناکی ئەوانی تێکەڵ کرد

to guide night travelers to safety.

تا گەڕۆکی شەو ئاڕاستە بکات بەرەو سەلامەتی.

She used her healing gift,

بەهرەی چاککردنەوەی بەکارهێنا،

which she had once used on the wounded sun god,

کە جارێک خواوەندی خۆری پێ چاککردەوە،

to cure people who were ill.

خەڵکی چاکبکاتەوە کە نەخۆش بوو .

Today, Ix Chel is so widely known

ئەمڕۆ، ئی شێل زۆر ناسراوە

that she’s become a symbol of Maya culture.

بووە بە هێماییەک بۆ کلتوری مایا.

But archeological evidence suggests that for the ancient Maya

بەڵام بەڵگەی شوێنەواری ئەوە دەردەخەن لە داستانی مایای کۆن

Ix Chel and the moon goddess were separate deities.

ئی شێل و خواوەندی مانگ دوو کەسی جیا بوون.

In the retellings of Maya people and the records of anthropologists,

لە گێڕانەوەی خەڵکی مایا و تۆمارەکانی مێژووناسان،

the two have merged so that Ix Chel’s story extends

ئەم دووانەیە بوون بە یەک تا چیڕۆکی ئی شێل

beyond the limits of the historical record.

زیاتر بڵاوببێتەوە لە تۆمارە مێژووییەکاندا.

Her story, like all myths, isn’t just one story:

چیڕۆکی ئەو، وەک هەموو ئەفسانەکان، تەنها یەک چیڕۆک نییە:

the variations, ancient and modern, speak to what people value,

جیاوازییەکان، کۆن و مۆدێرن، ئەوە دەڵێن کە خەڵکی بەهایان بۆ داناوە،

and how they see themselves in their mythological heroes.
