Every year, about 1,000 new words are added to the Oxford English Dictionary.

Where do they come from,

ئەو وشانە لە کوێوە هاتوون،

and how do they make it into our everyday lives?

With over 170,000 words currently in use in the English language,

ئێستا زیاترە ١٧٠٠٠٠ وشە لە زمانی ئینگلیزی بەکار دێن،

it might seem we already have plenty.

وادەردەکەوێت پێش ئێستا وشەمان زۆر هەبێت.

Yet, as our world changes,

هەروەکو ئەوەی چۆن جیهانەکەمان دەگۆڕێت،

new ideas and inventions spring forth,

ئاواش بیرۆکە و داهێنانە نوێیەکان دەردەکەون،

and science progresses,

و زانستیش پێش دەکەوێت،

our existing words leave gaps in what we want to express

ئەو وشانەی ئێستا کەوا دەمانەوێت دەریانببڕین کەلێن بەجێدەهێڵن

and we fill those gaps in several ingenious,

و ئێمەش ئەو کەلێنانە بەڕیگەی بلیمەتانە،

practical,

و کرداریانە،

and occasionally peculiar ways.

هەندێک جاریش بە ڕێگە تایبەتەکان پڕیان دەکەینەوە.

One way is to absorb a word from another language.

ڕێگەیەک ورگرتنی وشەیە لە زمانێکی دیکە.

English has borrowed so many words over its history

بەدرێژای مێژوو زمانی ئینگلیزی وشەی لە زمانەکانی دیکە وەرگرتووە

that nearly half of its vocabulary comes directly from other languages.

کەوا نزیکە نیوەی وشەگەری ئینگلیزی ڕاستەوخۆ لە زمانەکانی دیکەوە وەرگیراون.

Sometimes, this is simply because the thing the word describes

هەندیک کات، ئەم سادەیە چونکە ئەو شتەی وشەکە وەسفی دەکات

was borrowed itself.

خودی خۆی وەگیراوە.

Rome and France brought legal and religious concepts,

ڕۆم و فرەنسیەکان چەمکەکانی یاسا و ئاینیان،

like altar and jury, to Medieval England,

وەکو گۆڕان، دەستەی سوێندخواردن بۆ سەدەکانی ناوەڕاستی ئینگلتەرایان ‌هێناوە،

while trade brought crops and cuisine,

لە کاتێکدا بازرگانی دانەوێڵە و خۆراکی هێناوە،

like Arabic coffee,

وەک قاوەی عەرەبی،

Italian spaghetti,

مەعکەڕۆنی ئیتاڵی،

and Indian curry.

But sometimes, another language has just the right word

بەڵام هەندێک کات زمانێکی دیکە وشە ڕاستەکەی هەیە

for a complex idea or emotion,

بۆ بیرۆکە یاخود هەستێکی ئاڵۆز،

like naïveté

وەکو ساویلکە

machismo,

نێرایەتی

or schadenfreude.

یاخود گاڵتەکردنی بەکەسێکی بێ بەخت.

Scientists also use classical languages to name new concepts.

هەروەها زانایان زمانە کۆنەکانیان بۆ ناونانی چەمکە نوێیەکان بەکارهێناوە.

Clone, for example, was derived from the Ancient Greek word for twig

بۆ نموونە، لەبەرکردنەەوە لە وشەیە لقی یۆنانی کۆنەوە وەگیراوە

to describe creating a new plant from a piece of the old.

تا وەسفی دروستکردنی دارێکی نوێ لە پارچەیەکی کۆن بکات.

And today, the process works both ways,

و لەم ڕۆژگارەدا، پڕۆسەکە بە هەر دوو ڕێگەکە کار دەکات،

with English lending words like software to languages all over the world.

زمانی ئینگلیز وشەگەڵیکی وەکو سۆفت وێری بە هەموو زمانەکانی سەر زەوەی داوە.

Another popular way to fill a vocabulary gap

ڕێگەیەکی دیکەی ناسراو بۆ پڕکردنەوەی کەلێنی وشەگەری

is by combining existing words that each convey part of the new concept.

تێکەڵکردنی وشەکانی ئێستایە کەوا هەر بەشێکی گوازراوەی چەمکە نوێیەکەیە.

This can be done by combining two whole words into a compound word,

دەتواندرێت ئەمە ئەنجام بدرێت بە تێکەڵکردنی دوو وشە بۆ وشەیەکی لێکدراو،

like airport

وەکو فرۆکە خانە

or starfish,

ئەستێرەی دەریا،

or by clipping and blending parts of words together, like spork,

یان بە کورتکردنەوە و ئاوێتەکردنی بەشەکانی وشەکان بەیەکەوە، وەکو جەنگار،

brunch,

نانی بەیانی و نیوەڕۆ بەیەکەوە،

or internet.

یان ئێنتەرنێت.

And unlike borrowings from other languages,

و ئەوانە وەکو وەرگرتنی وشە نییە لە زمانەکانی دیکەوە،

these can often be understood the first time you hear them.

زۆربەی جار لەگەڵ یەکەم بیستنایان لێیان تێدەگەیت.

And sometimes a new word isn't new at all.

و هەندێک کات وشەی نوێ بەهیچ شێوەیەک نوێ نییە.

Obsolete words gain new life by adopting new meanings.

وشە کۆنەکان بەهەڵگرتنەوەی واتا نوێیەکان ژیانێکی نوێ بەدەست دەهێنن.

Villain originally meant a peasant farmer, but in a twist of aristocratic snobbery

لە بنەرەتدا وشەی چەپەڵ واتا جوتیار بەڵام لە سەردەمی ئەرستۆکڕاتی لەخۆبایی

came to mean someone not bound by the knightly code of chivalry

واتا ئەوە کەسەی بەڕێسای سوارچاکی جوامێریەوە پەیوەست نییە

and, therefore, a bad person.

و هەورەها واتا کەسێکی خەراپ

A geek went from being a carnival performer

وشەی گیک بە نمایشکاری کەرنڤاڵ

to any strange person

کەسێکی نامۆ

to a specific type of awkward genius.

جۆرێکی تایبەتی بلیمەتی گەمژیی دەگووترا.

And other times, words come to mean their opposite through irony,

و کاتەکانی دیکە، وشەکان واتای دژەکانیان دەدا لەڕێگەی گاڵتەجاری ئەدەبیەوە

metaphor,

خواستە،

or misuse,

یان هەڵەبەکار‌هێنان،

like when sick or wicked are used to describe something literally amazing.

وەکو کاتێک ناخۆشی و بەدی بەکاردێن تاو وەسفی شتێکی سەرنج ڕاکێش بکەن.

But if words can be formed in all these ways,

بەڵام ئەگەر وشەکان بە هەموو ڕێگەکان پێکهاتە بکرێن

why do some become mainstream while others fall out of use

بۆچی هەندێکیان بوون بە وشەی باو و ناسراو لە کاتێکدا هەندێکی دیکەیان چیتر بەکارنایەن

or never catch on in the first place?

یان هەندێک هەر لەسەرتاوە پشتگوێ دەخرێن؟

Sometimes, the answer is simple,

هەندیک کات، وڵامەکە ئاسانە،

as when scientists or companies give an official name to a new discovery

چونکە کاتیک زاناکانە یان خاوەن کۆمپانیاکان ناوێکی فەرمی بە دۆزینەوەی نوێ

or technology.

یان تەکنەلۆجیا دەبەخشن.

And some countries have language academies to make the decisions.

و هەندێک وڵات شارەزای زمانیان هەیە تاوەکو بڕیارەکان بدەن.

But for the most part, official sources like dictionaries

بەڵام زۆربەی کات، سەرچاوە فەرمیەکانی وەکو فەرهەنگەکان

only document current usage.

تەنها ئەو وشانەی ئێستا بەکاردێن تۆماردەکەن.

New words don't originate from above, but from ordinary people

وشە نوێیەکان لە چینی سەرەوە سەرچاوە ناگرێت بەڵکو لە نێوا خەڵکی ئاسایی

spreading words that hit the right combination

وشەکان بڵاوەدەکەنەوە کەوا بەتێکەڵکردنێکی

of useful and catchy.

بەسود و سەرنج ڕاکێش.

Take the word meme,

با وشەی میم وەربگرین،

coined in the 1970s by sociobiologist Richard Dawkins

لە ساڵی ١٩٧٠ لە لایەن زیندەزانی کۆمەڵایەتی ڕیچار دوکینسە داهێندرا

from the Ancient Greek for imitation.

لە وشەی لاسایکردنەوەی یۆنانی کۆنەوە وەریگرت بوو.

He used it to describe how ideas and symbols propagate through a culture

بەکاریهێنا تا وەسفی ئەو بیرۆکە و هێمایانەی لەڕێگەی کلتورەوە بڵاودەبنەوە پێ بکات.

like genes through a population.

وەکو بڵاوبوونەوەی بۆماوەزانی لەڕێگەی دانیشتوانەوە.

With the advent of the Internet,

لەگەل هاتنی ئینتەرنێت

the process became directly observable in how jokes and images

پرۆسەکە ڕاستەوخۆ تێبینیکرا کە چۆن گاڵتەکان و وێنەکان

were popularized at lightning speed.

بەخێرایی ڕووناکی لە لای خەڵک خۆشەویست بوون.

And soon, the word came to refer to a certain kind of image.

و هەر زوو، وشەیەک هات تا ئاماژە بە جۆرێکی دڵنیایی وێنە بکات.

So meme not only describes how words become part of language,

کەواتە میم نەک هەر تەنها وەسفی ئەوە ناکات چۆن وشەکان بوونە بە بەشێک لە زمان،

the word is a meme itself.

وشەکە خودی میمە.

And there's a word for this phenomenon of words that describe themselves:

و وشەیەک بۆ ئەم دیاردەیەیی وشەکان وەسفی خۆیان دەکەن هەیە:

autological.

ئەوەیش هاوشێوەیەیە.

Not all new words are created equal.

هەموو وشە نوێیەکان بە یەکسانی دروست نەکراون،

Some stick around for millennia,

هەندێک بۆ هەزارەها ساڵە لە شوێنی خۆیانن،

some adapt to changing times,

هەندێک لەگەڵ گۆڕانکاریەکانی کات خۆیان گونجاندوە.

and others die off.

و هەدنێک ڕەشکراونەتنەوە.

Some relay information,

هەندێک زانیاری دەگمەنن،

some interpret it,

و هەندێک لێکدانەوەی دەکەن،

but the way these words are created

بەڵام ئەو ڕێگەیەی ئەو وشانەی لێ دروستکراوە

and the journey they take to become part of our speech

و ئەو گەشتەی ئەنجامی دەدان تا ببەنە بەشێک لە ئاخافتنمان

tells us a lot about our world and how we communicate within it.
